I read on MSDN how to manually uninstall the instance of SQL server 2005 express, however i am not sure that it will remove the service. The reason i need to do this is that an application i have installed SQL Server 2005, and also QPulse5 SQL Server. I have two instances and it is giving me compile issues which i believe is related to having both services. I did add/remove programs and reinstalled just SQL Server 2005 and recieved error message saying that the service failed to start. The whole problem of this occured when we ran DCPromo with SQL installed. After we did we relized you could not promote with SQL Server. I understand that it is not recommended running SQL Server on a DC, however we did not have a choice. I am hoping someone here may have a solution for this. If there is any other information you need just let me know. Thanks

Apparently you cannot go backwards. Once 2005 Express is installed, even removing it does not allow you to setup MSDE 2000 again. So there is no "trying it out" option.
Unfortunately, our software does not use 2005 Express. I tried it out, and now have a useless testing workstation that can't have MSDE 2000 installed again.
Any ideas on how to break the chain here are welcome.
I've tried downloading SQL Express 2005 but it will not install properly, stating that it is already installed. I cannot get the SQLExpress Service to start. I keep getting the message (The request failed or the service did not respond in a timely fashion). Can anyone help or point me in the right direction?
I finally bit the bullet and uninstalled all of Sql Server 2005 and installed Sql Server 2005 Express both Advanced and the Toolkit. I can get in and see everything locally and my production Great Plains server just fine through Management console. The one thing I can't do is open an integration package to process our credit cards.
It's a pretty simple integration, but when I go to open it in SQL Server Business Intelligence Development Studio, the only thing it shows installed was Reporting services, not Integration services. When I try to open the project it gives me: "The application for project 'c:pcard...' is not installed. Make sure the application for the project type(.dtproj) is installed." I had a problem earlier with the gui not coming up but was resolved when I applied SS2005 SVP 2. Some items wasn't on the same version. I re-applied svp 2 after I installed SS express and still got the above. If I try and 'add' Integration Services, either thru Express or just regular ss2005, it says it's already installed.
Do I have to modify the registry so that it comes up on Business Intelligence Dev Studio? I can't run the integration if I can't open the project.
I have been receiving the update notice from MS about SQL 2005 Express Service Pack 2. I download it and install. It states successful installs but I get another message requesting the same update. It is Ground Hogs day and Deja Vu all over again.
Question:
Where do I find out if it actually installed?
How do I stop getting the messages from MS to download and install SQL 2005 Express Service Pack 2? I shut the the automatic update but if I turn it on a few days later. I get the same message.
I'm trying to do an unattended install of SQL Express 2005 SP2, and specify that the service runs under the Local Service account. Prior versions of SQL Express worked fine.
With SQL Express 2005 SP2, however, the install fails on XP Pro SP2. It *does* work on Winows 2003 Server.
It fails at the end of the install, saying it can't start the service. If I use "NETWORK SERVICE", it works fine, but that's more privileges than I want the service to have. Is there something else on the command line that I can try to get it to work?
I downloaded Web Matrix. Very nice. My VB experience makes this very intuitive. But I see in order to do dB development, I also need to download MS SQL, which is labeled MSDE in as step 3 in the Web Matrix download operation. As I follow the link forward I see that there are three distinct components:
Sql2kasp3.exe Sql2kdesksp3.exe Sql2ksp3.exe
Are all three of these required?
Also I see there is a beta version of the SQL Server 2005 Express Edition: http://lab.msdn.microsoft.com/express/sql/ here. Would this be a viable alternative.
System.ServiceProcess.TimeoutException: Time out has expired and the operation has not been completed. at System.ServiceProcess.ServiceController.WaitForStatus(ServiceControllerStatus desiredStatus, TimeSpan timeout) at ReportServicesConfigUI.Panels.ServerInformationPanel.StartStopServiceTask(Boolean start)
i get the above error when attepting to install reporting services
On my backup server running Symantec BackupExec 11D, I wanted to install Service Pack 2 for SQL Server 2005 Express. I started performing the update using "Windows Update", but cancelled the upgrade process just before it started to install (right after the downloading/verifying download phase of Windows update).
Now when I try to find the SP2 update using Windows Update, it doesnt show up on the update website. Rebooting the server doesnt help. I manually downloaded the file for SQL 2005 Express SP2 and tried installing it, but it says "the component is already installed" and I have to exit the process.
BackupExec 11D is running fine as of now, and it might not face problems later.. but I am not sure. Is there any way to uninstall SP2 and re-install it again!??

Currently, i am planning to develop a small system for my client by using SQL database. However, i am not sure is it legal to use SQL Express 2005 in this project? I mean setup the SQL Express 2005 in their server then my application will access this database. Is it legal? or Do i need to purchase any license in order to do that? or I need to purchase a SQL Server 2005 Standard or Enterprise version?
How do SQL 2000 service packs play a role in upgrading? That is, can SQL 2000 Standard with no Service Packs(SP) be upgraded to SQL 2005 Standard, or does SQL 2000 Standard have to have a certain service pack(SP).
What about re-applying SQL 2005 service packs when upgrading Express SP1 to Workgroup, etc.?
I am trying to start ms sql server 2005 express as a network user from originally starting as local system. I cannot start the service.
I have given this network user administrator access to sql express from the sql server surface area configuration "Add New Administrator". I have went into the local users/groups and added this network user to the 3 security groups
The server could not load the certificate it needs to initiate an SSL connection. It returned the following error: 0x8009030d. Check certificates to make sure they are valid.
I receive five errors in the event logs/application
EventID: 26014

I don't recall assigning any sql specific certificates. The reason I'm trying to run this as a network user is because an application on a remote windows server requires it.
After starting the service back running as local system as it was before, I went into the SQL Server Management Studio Express and edited the properties for this new network user I wish to run the service as. I gave him full access including checking all grants in securables.
I now see a bit of a difference in the event logs with these errors.
EventID: 17058
initerrlog: Could not open the log file 'c:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL1MSSQLLOGERRORLOG.' Operating system error =5(Access is denied).
I saw a notification when changing the sql server service's logon that the new network user has been granted the log on locally right.
The second and last new error is
EventID: 17053
UpdateUptimeRegKey: Operating system error 5(Access is denied.) encountered.
When i try to view in IE browser I am required to enter credentials. I enter Admin user and password but this does not work - not authorized to view page.
Looked in IIS -> ReportServer$SQLExpress and would have expected to see report here or in Pages folder. It is not there!
We deploy an application that uses SQL Server Express 2005. One of our test engineers tried to use our setup on Windows XP SP 3. But the SQL server installer gave an error - unable to update msxml6r.dll. Is this a bug of the SQL Server installer or do we need to make use of a more recent version of msxml6?
I am continually prompted to download & install this SP by the windows update utility but it always fails to install it. I have XP SP2. No error msg is provided. I do not have ACT! installed. I do have Oracle 10g Expr. Ed installed. Competitive jealousy?
I found this online:
Important notes about the cumulative hotfix package €¢ You must enable the SQL Server Management Object (SMO) extended stored procedures and the SQL Server Distributed Management Object (SQL-DMO) extended stored procedures before you install the cumulative hotfix package.
Where does one enable SMO & SQL-DMO?
I looked in the summary log file in the Hotfix directory and it says that the problem is that SQL Express cant be started. See below.
I went into the SQL Configuration Mgr and tried to start it and it fails to start. No reason given. Now what?

I have been trying to drill down to the cause for this event log message: "The configuration of the AdminConnectionTCP protocol in the SQL instance SQLEXPRESS is not valid." It is reported from the SQLBrowser service as a warning when the service starts. I have tried starting SQLBrowser.exe with -c flag, but the output reveals no errors. I have seen this error on three computers. Two are running SQL 2000, 2005 and Express. One was only running Express, but still this message. I then looked into the log for the SQL Express server itself. It shows this message on startup: "Dedicated administrator connection support was not started because it is not available on this edition of SQL Server. This is an informational message only. No user action is required." Now, it appears to me that these two messages may relate to the same "error" (or rather behaviour by design). So, can anyone confirm that the warning in the event log from the SQL Browser service occurs becuase of that the SQL Express edition doesn't allow any "AdminConnection", but the SQL Browser service isn't aware of that SQL Express edition shouldn't support that, and reports it as a warning (implying that we can't do much about this warning)?

I am attempting to implement tighter security on my instances of SQL Server 2005. One of my tasks is to make sure that the service account for the SQL Server service has the minimum privileges necessary to run the service. I thought I had everything configured correctly, but then I realized that the "SQLServer2005MSSQLUser" Windows group was a member of the "sysadmin" fixed server role. I do not want the service account to be a sysadmin, so I removed the service account from this group.
Everything seemed to be working, until I received a call from one of our developers. He was attempting to execute a stored procedure, and he kept getting the following error: "An error occurred during decryption".
I looked up the error, and found out it is related to the service master key. I am using the same service account that I did when I installed SQL Server, so I am baffled as to why I am receiving this error. The error was resolved when I added the service account back to the "SQLServer2005MSSQLUser" Windows group and restarted the SQL Server service.
Hi i tried to install the Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition Service Pack 2 but was unable to do so. I got an error message saying: Error Code: 0x2B22
I went through what the message said, but i was unable to solve the problem. Below is the summary of the problem. Please help me solve it.

When updating automaticallly, this update always fail, I have put the configuration manager /server browser : the only one that was disabled, on manual (I have not the automatic option for this one) but nothing works, what can I do ? This is a new laptop I have got (XP pro) and I am going through the process of updating many things, only this one fails, any help appreciated.
From the Windows update site and also via automatic download of updates, the following update fails every time...The SQL it is trying to update works fine. The following updates were not installed: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition with Advanced Services Service Pack 2 (KB 921896)
I've been trying to install the following update: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition Service Pack 2 (KB 921896). I always recieve the following error: 2B22,

Using SQL Express, UNDER COMPUTER management, SQL Server Configuraqtion Manager, SQL Server 2005 Network configuration Ihave the following listed instances
CSOLUTION - not listed under services
MSSQLSERVER - Disabled
SQLEXPRESS - Diaabled
SQLTEST - Disabled
SQLEXPRESSDATA - used by VB05 program
Questions
a) how do I delete all the instancces I do not use. In MSDE, each instance could be removed via the add/remove programs, but I don't see how to remove it under express
b) since SQLEXPRESS is the default for an SQL Express installation, I would like for the VBB05 program to use that instance; how do I do that?
I installed SQL Server Express trail for 3 times each with new instance. Now I came to know that I need to have a default instance. I un-installed the SQL Server Express and tried to install it again. It still says I have installed instances and if I select default instance the option buttons are un-checked and disabled. I tried to delete all the folders related to the SQL Server installationa dn tried but still I see the same thing. Please help me in istalling the default instance.

I'm trying to upgrade my management studio to the full version, I uninstalled Express edition and started the install for the full version, but I get an error stating "you cannot install this component because it is already installed". I had a word with one of the guys in the office and he said the only way he's ever been able to get round this is by flattening the entire PC and starting again. Obviously I want to avoid that!
I installed sql server express 1st time successfully. But later I found that there's no solution explorer(there's no item under file-new called Project). To reinstall, I removed all the components completely, including engine, msee, bol, sampledb. But could not install the engine again. I've downloaded the installation files several times and tried both sqlexpr32.exe and sqlexpr_adv.exe. The same error log:

I am trying to remove Analysis Server from a cluster. I have done the research and according to MS you can't use the regular add/remove programs dialog to remove a component. You have to use the setup.exe from the command line. This article (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/910230) explains at the very bottom to run this command "Start /wait <DiskDrive>setup.exe /qb REMOVE=Analysis_Server INSTANCENAME=<InstanceName>". Well I do that and I get the installer up and running but when it gets to that system configuration check screen, where it runs a bunch of checks on the nodes, it just closes before it does any checks and nothing further happens. I can't find any error in the event log or find any log files on disk related to why its just closing.
Just to investigate further, I wondered what executable was running when you ran the installer though the add/remove programs dialog, so I looked in the registry. Well along with the SQL Server 2005 entry, which runs the setup bootstrap program in your default install folder, I noticed an entry that was idenified only by its GUID. Looking at the sub keys I noticed the DisplayName was Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Analysis Services. The UninstallString key was set to "MsiExec.exe /I{52B0D62A-860D-4136-9A8A-9FD877E8EE89}" so I ran that. The installer seems to work, but it doesnt run any configuration checks. I get to the screen with the big button to change components with no errors. Then it acutally shows Analysis Services installed (the disk icon is not xed out), I can then click and select entire feature will be unavailable. I haven't proceeded on this step because I am worried about the cluster.
I am assuming that this uninstaller will only remove analysis services from the node its running on. This is fine, cause I can just run this same procedure on all the nodes... and then i would assume I would have to manually clean up the cluster resource. But I have not tested this, and unfortuanlly I don't have a development cluster to try this on.
Does anyone have experience with removing Analysis Services from a failover cluster environment?
I just removed (via Add and remove programs) SQL 2000 Server and now only have SQL 2005 left on my machine. The 2005 Server (SQLExpress?) is set up for mixed mode and I've verified that the registry setting is 2 for LoginMode, yet I'm still unable to login. This is the following error?
TITLE: Connect to Database Engine ------------------------------
Login failed for user 'drafttrackuser'. The user is not associated with a trusted SQL Server connection. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 18452)

Naturally, the link goes no where. I've searhed this site and it seems most of the problems are either more complex (linked servers, clusters etc.) or are people who haven't set the server to work in mixed mode. I've rebooted a couple of times but the errors persist.
