Removing Secondary DB Files - SQL7 To SQL2K
Feb 24, 2003
I'm converting DBs from SQL7 to SQL2K; the previous owner & server issues had created secondary data and/or log files. The size of the databases, and the configuration of the new server, do not warrant those secondary files. In restoring the databases from SQL7 to SQL2K, either by detach/copy/attach or backup/restore, is there a method for deleting the secondary files without, of course, losing any data?!
TIA,
Al

I don't have any extra machines, so I'm thinking of evaluating SQL2K on one of my existing boxes with SQL 7 already installed. My experience is that SQL 6.5 co-existed extraordinarily well with SQL 7. Does the same apply to the SQL 7 / SQL 2K combination? Thanks!

I am running a SQL 2000 server (Server A) on Win2000. I have a seperate server(Server B) running SQL 7.0 on NT6.0. When I attempt to create a linked server From B to A, I am unable to connect but I am able to create a linked server from A to B and connect( but I can go the opposite direction from A to B and connect). We have another server (Server C) that is running SQL 2000 and NT6.0. We can connect from B to C (so we are assuming that issue is not one of version compatability between versions 7.0 and 2000). The server Network configurations on all the servers are the same. The only difference is Win2000. Are there any other factors we may not have considered?
Thanks.

I've inherited a database from a SQL7 system, and converted it to SQL2000. It has a secondary data file (.ndf) and a secondary log file. Because the server configurations are different it's no longer necessary to have the secondary files. How to I merge the secondary file data into the primary files and then delete the secondary files?
Thanks,
Al

I have a database with 2 log files VE_log and VE_log2 (the split is left from legacy system with limited disk space). I want to eliminate the 2nd log.
I've tried SHRINKFILE (EMPTYFILE), which of course reduces the file to the default minimum pages, SHRINKFILE (TRUNCATEONLY), SHRINKDATABASE (VE), and in every case the ALTER DATABASE REMOVE FILE command fails cause the log isn't empty.
Ideas???
Thanks,
Al

Hi all..!If I want to split an SQL DB into several physical files (as its 500GBdisk ran out of space, won't even run shrinks any more, and we boughtanother 500GB disk to add to the PC)then what is the difference between:Adding another File to the primary group which will reside on the newgroup;Adding another file in another group. We do not want to set any db objects (Tables, indexes)to a secondary file, as this will involve lengthy data movingoperations. We would like the DB to continue working from where it isutilizing the added space in a contigous (striped) manner. Will striping occur in both cases? as I understand striping it meansthat our stuck SQL Server will awake back to life as it will now have500GB more data for its DB, even though we haven't set any of itsobjects (tables, indexes) to explicitly use the secondary NDF file onthe new disk?or will it only utilize the new space if we set some objects to resideon that NDF?for example if we run large queries which crash now (due to lack ofspace) when we add the second drive will they start to work as theprocess will grow striped from the full drive to the new drive, even ifall the queries' source tables are all still set to the old drive? Thanks for any replies?

I am new to SQL and I haven't written any scripts in the past. I thought I would give it a go. Basically, I am trying to write a script that will check if a database has more than one log files, free the VLFs that belong to the secondary log files and then remove them. I created a database named rDb as this link suggests and followed the steps.
[URL] ....
It works. However, I want to have to run just 1 script that will do the entire job. This is what I have gotten so far and it doesn't work:
create table #tempsysdatabase(
File_id int,
file_guid varchar(50),
type_desc varchar (20),
data_space_id int,
name nvarchar (50),
state int,
[Code] ....

I read , When sql server Database having multiple data files within single filegroup then sql server writes data in multiple proportional file algorithm where the amount of data written to a file is proportionate to the amount of free space in that file, compared to other files in the filegroup.
so if there is no filegroups created and multiple secondary files are attached in databse , is there same way data stored and writes data in multiple files by the same algorithm or any different way.

Hi,
I was wondering, is there any way to have a stored procedure write to a file its resultant recordset?
i.e. I have this SP which fires a query, this in turn returns a single row recordset that I need to have written to a file. I realise this could easily be facilitated using an ADO client, however, can it be done by the backend i.e. the SQL7 & SP itself, directly?
I hope you can help me here! thanks for your time!
Cheers
Gaurav

When you create a dump device, then add backups with the NOINIT arg, the space taken up on the device grows, is there a way of removing individual backups from the device without (i guess) purging the whole lot by running WITH INIT?
I can get a list of the files by running the RESTORE WITH HEADERONLY, but I can't see how to remove individual ones.

I was trying an edition upgrade from SQL 2005 standard x64 to SQL 2005 enterprise x64 using the "setup SKUUPGRADE=1" from the command line. The SO is W2003 server R2 enterprise and I have a SQL clustered environment with 2 nodes (active/passive).
I select to upgrade the SQL module and I mark the checkbox for the cluster installation. The installation seems to work properly untill setup is doing the task "removing backup files". Then 2 "unexpected error" message appears as follows. The 2 above windows appear when you click on the help icon.

Hi everyone,
I'm trying to integrate SQLEXPRESS in a custom application ("the app"). On installation, a new instance ("myNewInstance") is created, and a new DB ("myDB") is created on that instance.
Upon de-installation of "the app", I remove the new instance. To that end, I'm calling the SQLEXPRESS setup like this:
Code Snippet
setup.exe /qb REMOVE=SQL_Engine INSTANCENAME=myNewInstance
The Problem: While the service and the instance are removed, the instance's data directory is not, and the DB Datafiles are still there. Now if I reinstall the app (re-creating myNewInstance), it uses the same directory structure, and when I try to re-create the DB, I get the following error message:
Code Snippet
Msg 5170, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
Cannot create file '[...]MSSQL.2MSSQLDATAmyDB.mdf' because it already exists. Change the file path or the file name, and retry the operation.
So here's the Question: is there
a) any way to tell setup.exe to completely remove the datafiles when uninstalling the instance, or
b) any way to tell TSQL to overwrite the old datafiles if they exist?
Thanks in advance,
Thorsten

HELP!
For the past several weeks, I have been trying to install SQL Server 2005 on a Win XP SP2 PC. Regardless of the options I choose (SQL Engine + Client Tools, Client Tools only, etc.) when the installation gets to the end of the Client Tools setup and the setup status displays "Removing Backup Files", my PC appears to hang.
For a period of time, there is a fair amount of HD activity which gives me the impression that files are in fact being deleted, but then there is no HD activity and the installation appears to hang. Finally I give up and kill the setup process and reboot.
After reboot, it appears that the client tools have been installed (the icons appear and I can open the Management Studio, but when I try to connect to an existing instance of SQL, that hangs. This occurs for either Windows or SQL authentication.
Has anyone experienced this behavior and determined the root cause? What EXACTLY is happening during the "Removing Backup Files" phase of the installation?
Thanks for any help in advance,
Marc Mueller

I have a virtual machine that previously had SQL Server 2005 installed. Since I changed the computer name, I have to reinstall SQL. I removed all the SQL components and am trying to reinstall the database and reporting components. The installation is failing on the "Removing temporary files" step. According to the setup progress screen, the following components have been installed:
OWC11
SQL Server Bakcward-Compatibility Files
SQL Server Database Services
Reporting Services
Visual Studio Integrated Development
SQL Server Books Online
SQLXML4
Workstation Components, Books Online - this step is still in "configuring components" status.
The virtual machine is running Windows 2003 Server SP1 with all current patches, using just under 2 GB of memory (1920 MB of RAM), the host is Windows XP SP2 with all current patches, with 4 GB of memory.
I had no problem doing this procedure on a different virtual machine, so I'm not sure what the problem is here.

Shall we disable Log shipping and change the DB Option to Multi-user mode and take backup? or any different method, without disabling log shipping?
please advice. Thanks in advance.

How can I copy a SQL 7 database from one server to another? Please tell me all the ways because I've tried the obvious and it doesn't work. (backup and restore - won't go from one server to another, DTS transfer object Wizard - does a whole pile of errors and doesn't do stored proceedures and trigures). Thanks for help in advance. Also, what is the email address to post to the listserv and where is the FAQ for SQL7? Most of my listserv's tell you where to post right at the bottom of the digest I get - any chance you guys would do that with this list? Thanks again.
