Renaming NT Server Running Sqlserver 6.5

Hello,
I read few of the archive article about this, but I would like to verify this again.
We currently have Sqlesrver 6.5 running on Intel NT 4.0.
We would like to rename the server.
Is there any problem I'll need to look out for?
I am planning to rename the Nt server and reboot.

Hello,
I just read the thread on renaming the server, and running setup. My question is how do I rerun setup? SQL 7 was installed from the Back Office cd and when I try to run setup it tells me that my SQL Server is corrupted and I need to run setup. If I run Setup from the MSSQL7 directory, it wants to "upgrade" to standard edition. What am I missing here?

Hi All
Just wondering if anyone has experience with running SQL Server 7 with Citrix. We currently run Terminal Server for our business and now we are installing SQL Server 7 to run our main software package and we are being told that we should revert to a normal setup with workstations for each user rather than using our P75 terminals that we use with terminal server.
If all the procseeeing is being done by the server then surely we can just use the same low end boxes and just make sure that the server is crunching the data.

I am working for a company with approx. 5000 computers(Mix of Win2000+WinXP-PRO). I am asked to write some script or find some kind of tool or mehanism to scan the network to see how many PCs are running SQLServer ( Any version -- may be Desktop/Standard Edition). Is there any such way/script/tool anyone knows here . Please share your experience.

When I try to give myself administrative rights SQL presents me with the following error message:

This isn't just only a problem with the administrative rights. This happens in many different places such as when I try and add a new data source in VB Express 2005 it gives approximately the same error message.
My MSSQLSERVER service is running nicely but my SQLSERVER isn't and on top of that I can't get it to start!
If anybody can help me out here I would really grateful.

OK. I fixed that with the help of another thread that was similar except now this message is coming to haunt me:

I'm purely guessing this is related my SQLSERVER service not running but that is purely a guess. Getting back to the problem I have no clue how to fix it!

Hi,
I have a SQL Server Agent job set up to run a job that calls a dts package on the server.
When I run the DTS Package manually, everything works fine and does what it is supposed to do.
When I run the job, The job fails. If somebody had this error can you please help me out

Hello,
I am totally confused by what account I should be running my sql server database and my business layer service as.
I take it that when installing sqlserver and my service that I should be logged in as administrator.
Should I be using "Local Service", "Local System" or "Network Service" to run these processes as?
Summary of my business layer service
* Clients connect to this service on a tcp/ip port
* It accesses the file system
* it connects to the database

After I renamed the server. Jobs that exsisted before I renamed the server are still associated with the original server name. It has associated those jobs with the original server and assumes that the original server is the MSX server. I do not have multiple instances running on the server and do not want it that way. Is there a way to change the originating server? Or remove the MSX server?

We need to rename our server.
Example
SERVER_A renamed to SERVER_B and
SERVER_B renamed to SERVER_A
It is easy enough to change the NT box name. Other than using sp_DropServer and sp_AddServer, is there any other changes (updates) we need to make to SQL server or any system tables???

I have smilar kind of an issue with replication. I had sucessfully done replication with Sqlce2.0 on sql server 2000. In development machine I had VS 2003, sqlce development tools.
Now I use the same code done in VS 2003 into VS2005, it sucessfully converted the code.
In server machine (win 2003) I installed sql server 2000, sql server 2000 service pack 4, SP4 merge replication components, sql server 2005 mobile server tools and .Net framework 2.0. Created pubication sucessfuly. In this machine I configured IIS as per the web synchronization wizard. Gave anyonymous permissions. Virual direcory is created sucessfully. I tested the server agent in IE http://myservername/aliasname/sqlcesa30.dll.
SQL Server Mobile Server Agent 3.0 is shown
My application opened successfuly in windows mobile 5.0 Pocket PC emulator. When try to sync its dislays error "A request to send data to the computer running IIS is failed, see Hrresult"
No firewall in both development and server machines.
The same code works if its sqlce20 perfectly with vs2003 code. Not in this

I am experiencing a big problem with my prod server.I renamed my production server as my test sever (abc) and the test server to (xyz) in sql 2000.
Now, when I connect from my test server to my prod server, it does not seem to see the new server even I put the new server name. It still sees the databases what is in the test server, not the new server databases.
How can I resolve this?

Just dotting my 'i's & crossing my 't's here - what potential ramifications
are there in the renaming (as in changing the NetBIOS name) of an SQL 6.5
server? From what I can gather, it is as simple as performing the rename,
and then doing some minor config changes afterwards (i.e. unregistering the
old server entry within SEM and re-registering the server under the new
name) The main SQL application that is installed can be configured easily
enough but I just want to make absolutely sure that there aren't any
NBName-specific entries embedded in the Registry, MASTER.dat, or anywhere
else that will cause me grief once the change is made.
I've browsed through TechNet & Books Online but haven't as yet found a nice
definitive Q-Article which describes the exact procedure & potential
ramifications.

Is it possible to rename a database in SQL Server 2000? If
not, is it possible to copy the tables and relationship diagram
from one to another? The database is new, so there are no records
to copy. I just want to rename it, because redoing the tables would

We need to move a cluster to a new data center. There is a strong preference to retain the previous SQL Virtual Name. The existing cluster has a single default instance.Β We understand that when you have created a SQL Server FCI that you can change the SQL Virtual Name but not the instance name. I have a SQL Server 2008 R2 Cluster. I have moved a file to another drive by adding a new file on the drive, doing a shrinkfile with emptyfile. I have removed the old file and when I try to rename the new file to the old files old name, I get an error.
ALTER DATABASE mydb REMOVE FILE myfilename

I have completed a failover, thinking the name was being held in cache. I've also renamed to something completely different then tried to rename to the old filename.

Is there any danger with renaming the LOGICAL file names behind the database?
There are a bunch of databases that were restored copies and all of them have the same logical database file name. I'm trying to get some growth data so I want the logical files to be different (prefer them to match the actual database name) so I can more easily identify them.
For instance:
database_id name type_desc name physical_name
1 DLMdb1 ROWS DLMDB1 D:dlmdb1.mdf
1 DLMdb1 LOG DLMDB1_log E:dlmdb1.ldf
2 DLMdb2 ROWS DLMDB1 D:dlmdb2.mdf
2 DLMdb2 LOG DLMDB1_log E:dlmdb2.ldf
3 DLMdb3 ROWS DLMDB1 D:dlmdb3.mdf
3 DLMdb3 LOG DLMDB1_log E:dlmdb3.ldf
Am I safe to rename the logical names? I can't think of anything that references those logical file names that I would be breaking [backups, applications].

Hello people.
I am in the process of planning a server upgrade to sql2005 x64.
I created 2 linked servers: one to a SQL2000 sp4 server and one to a SQL7.0 SP3.
I have the following error when I query the linked servers.
OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI" for linked server "IVDM2K" returned message "Unspecified error".
OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI" for linked server "IVDM2K" returned message "The stored procedure required to complete this operation could not be found on the server. Please contact your system administrator.".
Msg 7311, Level 16, State 2, Line 1
Cannot obtain the schema rowset "DBSCHEMA_TABLES_INFO" for OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI" for linked server "IVDM2K". The provider supports the interface, but returns a failure code when it is used.
I am aware of KB 906954.

I applied the instcat.sql on the SQL2000SP4 server and my linked server issues for that one are gone.
However, I ran the instcat.sql script on the SQL7.0 sp3 server and the linked server is still giving me an issue.

I installed sql server on one of my test servers, and I am eventually going to rename this server and put it into production. This server will replace one of my old servers with the same name. I was wondering if there was a way to rename the SQL Server instance after you rename your server without having to reinstall SQL Server. Thanks in advance for all the help.

I'm working on creating a new version of an existing table. I want to keep the old table around, only with a different name. In looking this up I found there's a system routine named sp_rename, which looks like it will work fine.However in thinking about this I realized that the foreign key constraints defined on the table (there's 3 of them) are likely to not be renamed, correct?
If I'm correct, then I suppose I could rename the table, then drop the 3 foreign key constraints, and create them new using different names for those foreign key constraints.

We have a static class that makes an HTTPWebRequest to get XML data from one of our vendors. We use this as input to a stored proc in SQLServer2005. When I compile this class and call it from a console application in visual studio it executes in milliseconds, everytime. When I compile it, create the assembly and clr function and execute it in SQLServer, it takes around 14 seconds to execute the first time, then on subsequent requests it is again really fast, until I wait for 10 seconds and re-execute, once again it is slow the first time and then fast on subsequent requests. We do not see this behavior when executing outside SQLServer. Makes me think that some sort of authentication is perhaps taking place the first time the function is run in SQLServer? I have no idea how to debug this further. Anyone seen this before or have any ideas?

I created this table

Insert Data

with 2 Unicode characters
= 0x2300
’ = 0x2122
Selecting the data
select Bez from testunicode
I see
"?’"
’ = 0x2122 is ok but instead of 0x2300 there is 0x3f
When I modify the insert statement like that ( 8960 = 0x2300 )
insert into testunicode (Bez)values(NCHAR(8960)+'’')
and select again voila i see
"’"

I am trying to 'load' a copy of a SQLServer 2000 database to SQLServer 2005 Express (on another host). The copy was provided by someone else - it came to me as a MDF file only, no LDF file.
I have tried to Attach the database and it fails with a failure to load the LDF. Is there any way to bypass this issue without the LDF or do I have to have that?
The provider of the database says I can create a new database and just point to the MDF as the data source but I can't seem to find a way to do that? I am using SQL Server Management Studio Express.

I have an app that uses a sqlserver 2000 jdbc driver to connect to a sqlserver 2000.
Is it possible to do a direct replacement of sqlserver 2000 with sqlserver 2005 express just by reconfiguring the app to point to the express? The app would still be using the sqlserver 2000 jdbc driver to try and make the connection.
If that is a possibility, what can be some differences in the configuration? Previously with 2000 the config information I entered is:
server name: "machinename"( or ip). I've also tried "machiname/SQLEXPRESS"
DB name: name of db instance
port: 1433(default)
user and pass.
My attempts so far results in
"java.sql.SQLException: [Microsoft][SQLServer 2000 Driver for JDBC]Error establishing socket."
and
"java.sql.SQLException: [Microsoft][SQLServer 2000 Driver for JDBC]Unable to connect. Invalid URL."

I have an SQLServer Mobile database, and I would like to know if there is a way to upgrade it to SQLServer 2005 (.mdf) database. My database has no records in it, just the structure (tables etc). What I am actually asking is if I can create automatically a new SQLServer 2005 Database with the same structure as my existin SQLSErver Mobile database
