T-SQL (SS2K8) :: Replace Multiple Occurrences Of Same Character With Single Character

Aug 6, 2015

I have the following scenario, The contents of main file are like :

ServerCentral|||||forum|||||||||||||||is||||||the||best
so||||||be|||||on||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||it

And I need the output in the following form:

ServerCentral=forum=is=the=best
so=be=on=it

The logic being that multiple and consecutive occurrences of the special character, here - pipe , should be replaced by a single special character.

That Query (in the column) is just ran normally so I don't need to compile it each time I want to run it.THe problem I have is  @FieldName might be:     ryan's field. That apostrophe is killing me because the SQL keeps it as ryan's field, not ryan''s field(note the 2 apostrophes).  I cannot do: REPLACE(@FieldName, ''', '''') because it's not closing the apostrophes. Is there an escape character that I can use to say only one: ' ?Would the only solution be to put: ryan''s field into the Database, and just format it properly on the output?  Thanks.

T-SQL (SS2K8) :: Replace String After Specific Index

Mar 23, 2015

I have data like below

Potter, James J

Allen, Gary G

I want to remove Middle Name from the output

Potter, James
Williams, Ted
Allen, Gary

My Query:

SELECT
CASE WHEN CHARINDEX(' ', Supervisor, CHARINDEX(' ', Supervisor, 0) + 1) > 0 THEN
REPLACE(Supervisor, SUBSTRING(Supervisor, CHARINDEX(' ', Supervisor, CHARINDEX(' ', Supervisor, 0) + 1), LEN(Supervisor)), '')
ELSE Supervisor END AS NewSupervisor from data d

However, I stumble when Middle Name exists somewhere in the name as Replace function repalces every occurrence of the string. For ex: "Allen, Gary G" becomes "Allen,ary"

Do we have any way to say sql to replace after certain index?

T-SQL (SS2K8) :: Replace Multiple Characters With Single Character In A Column?

Jun 21, 2012

I am trying to replace all special characters in a column with one special character.

Example:

Table: dbo.Employee
Column: Name
Name
-------
edwardneuman!"<]
mikemoreno)'>$:
JeffJensen"?>"

I am trying to get the namepart to the left of ANY special character. To achieve this, I am thinking of replacing all the special characters with a single special character so that I can find the first occurrence of that special character and grab left of the special character (SUBSTRING/CHARINDEX). This way I don't need to loop through all the special characters.

I am expecting the following results:

Name
-------
edwardneuman<<<<
mikemoreno<<<<<
JeffJensen<<<<

Specific Invalid Character Value For Cast Specification Problem

May 25, 2007

Hi, I'm a new DBA and am a rookie when it comes to working with SQL Server 2005. I have been tasked with transfering an Access database to SQL Server 2005. Now I understand to use the import/export wizard, but am having problems fixing an error I am receiving. Here is the error...

Problem I
- Copying to [IS_Shared_ServicesTest].[dbo].[tblResource] (Error)
Messages
* Error 0xc0202009: Data Flow Task: SSIS Error Code DTS_E_OLEDBERROR. An OLE DB error has occurred. Error code: 0x80004005.
An OLE DB record is available. Source: "Microsoft SQL Native Client" Hresult: 0x80004005 Description: "Invalid character value for cast specification".
(SQL Server Import and Export Wizard)

* Error 0xc020901c: Data Flow Task: There was an error with input column "Contract Start Date" (115) on input "Destination Input" (80). The column status returned was: "Conversion failed because the data value overflowed the specified type.".
(SQL Server Import and Export Wizard)

Here is the short version of the error. I realize that there is an error with the conversion and the error is in tblResource in column Contract Start Date. It is still transfering the column over, and on spot check they seem fine. Should I be really worried about an error? Or is there something that I can do with the Access or SQL server database to fix this?

SQL Server 2012 :: Find A Specific String And Replace It With Another Inside Of VARCHAR Field

Aug 14, 2015

I'm trying to find a specific string (a name) and replace it with another inside of a VARCHAR(7000) field. Unfortunately, there are names like Ted and Ken that I'm trying to replace. I would like to leave words like Broken, admitted, etc... intact.

UPDATEtbl
SETBody = LEFT(REPLACE(tbl.Body, pm.OldFirstName, p.FirstName), 7000)
FROM Table tbl
JOIN Person p ON p.PersonID = tbl.PersonID
JOIN PersonMap pm ON pm.PersonID = p.PersonID AND LEN(pm.OldFirstName) > 2
WHEREtbl.Body LIKE '%[^a-z]'+pm.OldFirstName+'[., ]%

'The problem I'm running into is that the '[, ]%' in the LIKE excludes any record that ends with the FirstName because it is requiring either a space, comma or period after the name. Is there some way to add an empty string to the list of acceptable characters as that would cover any scenario in the data? I would prefer not to add all characters except space, comma and period, but I guess I could do that.

SQL Server 2008 :: Replicate Only Specific Data To Specific Subscriber?

Jun 30, 2015

We have a "main" SQL 2014 server who imports XML files using SSIS in a datacenter. In remote sites (which are warehouses), there is an instance of SQL 2014 Express. A merge replication is setup, as every operations done on each site must be "forwared" to the main database, as some XML files are generated as output for an ERP system.

Now, the merge replication replicate all the data to the server on each sites. But a specific site don't need the data of every other sites, only the data relevant to itself (which is the warehouse code). Is there a way to replicate only the data relevant to each individual sites to the subscribers? Or is there a better way than replication to accomplish this?

Can Logging Be Turned Off On Inserts To A Specific Temp Table From A Specific Sp?

Oct 10, 2007

I want to ship 500,000 aged transactions each night to an archive table and delete them from their source table in one or more logical units of work (LUW). Each row is approx 60 bytes and there is only one non clustered index on the source table presently.

I'm trying to weigh the pros and cons of 3 alternatives. One of them would basically insert the non-aged rows into tempdb, ship the aged records, truncate the table and then insert the tempdb records back into their source all in the same LUW.

For this alternative, I'd at least like to turn off logging when the records get inserted into tempdb as I dont see any value in logging that part of the activity. Is this possible?

How To Select A Specific Value From Dataset To Fill A Specific Cell ?

Mar 27, 2007

Hi there !

Thanks for taking the time to read this thread.

I don't know whether anyone has this problem, but I am definitely not using the right keywords to search for a thread.

My situation is this...

I have a dataset that has values to fill cells to multiple tables in a report.
However, I only want to select specific data from the dataset to fill textboxes and others.
I cannot change the stored procedure, but the sample of the data is shown below:-

Row Stat Val
0 dtRpt1 02/01/2005
1 Value1 1
2 Value2 2000
3 dtMailSent 02/28/2005
4 Value3 0
5 Value4 5
6 Value5 658

I know it looks weird, but the row really represents which "row" or textbox is it to fill with the Val. The Stat Column is just a way to make sure that I am filling the right values.

so my new report would have multiple tables to denote different categories.
In my first table, I tried putting the cells as follows:-
(expressions are highlighted in italics and bold)

TextBox1 =IIF(Fields!Row.Value =0, Fields!Val.Value,"")

Table1
Column1
DetailRow1 =IIF(Fields!Row.Value =1, Fields!Val.Value,"")
DetailRow2 =IIF(Fields!Row.Value =2, Fields!Val.Value,"")

Table2
Column1
DetailRow1 =IIF(Fields!Row.Value =3, Fields!Val.Value,"")
DetailRow2 =IIF(Fields!Row.Value =4, Fields!Val.Value,"")
DetailRow3 =IIF(Fields!Row.Value =5, Fields!Val.Value,"")
DetailRow4 =IIF(Fields!Row.Value =6, Fields!Val.Value,"")

I only expect this report to print out one page holding the previous values.

However, it ended up printing like this

----------------------------------------------------------

Table1
Column1
DetailRow1 1
DetailRow2

Column1
DetailRow1
DetailRow2 2000

Table2
Column1
DetailRow1 02/28/2005
DetailRow2
DetailRow3
DetailRow4

Table2
Column1
DetailRow1
DetailRow2 0
DetailRow3
DetailRow4

Table2
Column1
DetailRow1
DetailRow2
DetailRow3 5
DetailRow4

Table2
Column1
DetailRow1
DetailRow2
DetailRow3
DetailRow4 658

------------------------------------------------------

I tried putting it into the headerrows instead of DetailRows, and it ended up printing the last value.
Is there anyway to do this ? print all the values out in one table ? I tried using textboxes, but I think I got my expression wrong.

Is this the correct expression ?

=IIF((Fields!Row.Value,"Dataset") =1, (Fields!Val.value, "Dataset"), "")

and it give me an error
The value expression for the textbox €˜textbox5€™ contains an error: [BC30455] Argument not specified for parameter 'FalsePart' of 'Public Function IIf(Expression As Boolean, TruePart As Object, FalsePart As Object) As Object'.

Appreciate any advice or suggestion for this scenario !

Thanks!

Bernard

Read Chinese Character From SQL(SQL Server 2005) Database Table Column And Display Chinese Character

Feb 1, 2008

Hi!

I have a table like this below and it doesn't only contain English Names but it also contain Chinese Name.
CREATE TABLE Names
(FirstName NVARCHAR (50),
LastName NVARCHAR (50));
I tried to view the column using SQL Query Analyzer, It didn't display Chinese Character.
I know that SQL Server 2005 is using UCS-2 Encoding and Chinese Character uses Double Byte Character Set (DBCS) Encoding.
I want to read the FirstName and LastName columns and display in Window Form Data Grid and ASP.NET Grid View.
I tried to use this code below and it didn't work. It convert some of the English Name to Chinese Character and it display the chinese character and some still in the original unreadable characters.
Does anybody know how to read those character from SQL Table and display the correct Chinese Character without converting the English Name into Chinese also?
Thanks

int codePage = 950;
StringBuilder message = new StringBuilder();
Encoding targetEncoding = Encoding.GetEncoding(codePage);
byte[] encodedChars= targetEncoding.GetBytes(str);
.
message.AppendLine("Byte representation of '" + str + "' in Code Page '" + codePage + "':");
for (int i = 0; i < encodedChars.Length; i++)
{
message.Append("Byte " + i + ": " + encodedChars);
}

message.AppendLine(" RESULT : " + System.Text.Encoding.Unicode.GetString(encodedChars));
