Replacing Existing Records In A Table

Feb 5, 2007

I have a table that stores all the processed data from other tables. How can I replace the same data in this table when I do "reprocessing"? It's kinda like a combination of delete then insert kind of thing. I cannot simply insert as it will become duplicates. any idea?

Need Direction On SSB Replacing Existing Technology

Oct 24, 2006

Hello, I have an existing suite of applications in my company where remote laptop users enter data into a local database instance. There are several different applications with several different databases (some users run application A and C, others run A and B and D, etc). All of this data needs to make its way into both their local databases, and to the front office database. In addition, some of the data goes out of the front office to other end users (supervisors get data from people under them).

Currently, we get the data back and forth by creating text files full of SQL statements that are run on either the end user servers or the main server, and we zip and ftp these SQL Script files back and forth.

I am looking into the benefits of replacing this process with a Service Broker application, but I'm still too much of a newbie to understand how this might work. What should my messages contain? Should they contain the same SQL statements that are currently in the script files, and then a SSB process would grab the SQL and run it? Or should the message types be more specific to each application?

any pointers to articles that go beyond "here's what SSB is" would be appreciated.

How To Replace The Existing Records In The Table From Updates In The Transactional File

Sep 13, 2007

Hi i am getting a weekly transaction file which has two columns trans code and trans date to indicate whether the record is changed, added or modified . and the monthly master file contains blank in these two fields.

How do i update the row coming from the transaction file in the tables which contain the rows from the master file .

to better explain the example is
Master File

ID Name AGE Salary Transcode TransDate
2 dev 27 2777

Transaction File indicating change

ID Name AGE Salary Transcode TransDate
2 dev 27 24444 C 08072007

the ouput should be

2 dev 27 24444 C 08072007

replacing the existing row in the table(updating the whole row)

i have 50 columns in my table and based on the two fields i should replace the rows exisiting in table and if ID doesnot match exist just add them as a new row.

what transformation should i use .... to replace all the columns which have matching ID in table to the current record from trans file and if there doesnt exist matching id just add them as new row.

Thanks...

Replacing Blank Records With Text

Mar 20, 2006

Hi there,

I'm in a bit of a jam here and will appreciate any help.

I need the SQL code to replace a record if the record is empty.

For instance, I have about 7 columns containing over 40K records. In the firstname field, some records are blank. I need to replace all the blank firstname fields with this: 'now invalid' (without the quotes)

What would be the best way to achieve this?

Thanks

How To Do An Update On Existing Records?

Jul 20, 2005

I have one table of new records (tableA) that may already exist intableB. I want to insert these records into tableB with insert if theydon't already exist, or update any existing ones with new data if theydo already exist. A column (Action) in tableA already tells me whetherthis is an INSERT, UPDATE, or DELETE. I'm able to derive that I can doan insert withselect * into tableB from tableA where Action = 'INSERT'....and I think I can handle the delete. But I'm stuck on the update. How do I do the update? An ordinaryUPDATE statement just won't do unless I use a cursor to cycle throughthe recordset. I want to avoid a cursor.

Updating Of Existing Records

Sep 4, 2007

I have a following problem: I€™m importing records from an Access table into a SQL Server Table. I€™m using lookup to determine if a record already exists in the SQL Server table and in that case I should update the record if it was modified.

I thought of using OLE DB Destination for new records (done, works fine) and OLE DB Command Transformation to update the modified records. It all works but the thing that bothers me is that my table has approx. 40 columns so my OLE DB Command is very long (update table set col1 = ?, col2 = ?, col3 = ? €¦€¦). The other problem is that I€™m always updating all the columns even if only one column was modified.

Is there a better way to update the existing records?

Any help is appreciated.

Thanx
Sara

Using A Lookup To Update Existing Records

Jul 2, 2007

Hi,

I'm building a package to import data from a flat file into a Customer table, and I have set up a Lookup to check if that customer already exists in this table, and if so, perform an Update command instead of the bulk load. I don't expect many updates, if any, this is why i just used the OLE DB Command instead of using a staging table.

I've a bit of a problem executing this within a transaction and having the lock table option set on the SQL Server Destination. Is there anyway I can get Transaction support for this Data Flow working, as I want to be able to rollback a complete file/import if possible.

Thanks

Trent

Replacing Illegal Characters In Table

Dec 4, 2006

i'm trying to figure out a way to replace a handful of "Illegal" characters in our SQL tables. We are using Project Server and some of these characters are causing errors or other issues in OLAP Cube.

I'm trying to figure out a way to change the following characters to an underscore ( _ ) :

illegal characters are: / ( ) . , ' : - &

Can I just create a SQL query that loops through a column to replace all of these characters at once? or do I have to replace one character at a time?! I tested replacing one at a time and it works with the REPLACE function.

I'm not all that familiar with MSSQL, I've spent past few years working with MySQL instead.

how can my query loop? or would using CASE help me out?

thanks. any feedback is much appreciated. If you need to know more, let me know.

Updating /replacing Contents Of The Table

Is it possible to do an update * where in we update all the contents of the table after selecting specific rows of the same table.

for ex:

create table #Result(rowid int identity(1,1),cust_no int,companyname varchar(100),address varchar(200),zip varchar(9));

insert into #Result(cust_no,companyname,address,zip)
where (customertype='r' and customer.comp_id ='11')
group by customer.cust_no, customer.company

select * from #Result where customerstatus='s';

after this i want to update/replace the #Result with whatever results I have from the select statment.

Importing Data (Overwrite Any Existing Records)

Mar 19, 2007

Good Morning,  I need some assistance with SQL Server 2000 Importing Data.
When I import data from a text on a routine basis, three things must happen:
1.  New records identified by primary key get appended to table.
2.  Exisiting records identified by primary key get overwritten with new/(updated) data.
3.  All other existing records are left alone.
Does anyone know how to Import Records with the following the criteria above?  It cannot insert duplicate primary keys by nature, so it must overwrite those records!
This is being built into a DTS Package, but I need to get over this obsticle!  Thanks for any guidance!

Problem Updating Existing Records With Newid()

Apr 23, 2008

I currently have a table called stores.  I've just added a uniqueidentifier column called store_guid to the stores table.  The table currently has about 500 records in it and now i'm trying to set each store_guid = to a newid().  I've tried using  UPDATE stores SET store_guid = newid()  .   however, that doesn't work because i think it's trying to set each record equal to the same guid using that approach.  All i need to do is fill in my new column with new guids.  any ideas?

Thanks in advance,

Replacing Text In A Column For All Rows In The Table?

Oct 24, 2012

I have a column like this:

Table: User
name, field1
Jack 1000|1001|1003
Berg 2000|1001|2004
Paul 1001|1000
Jane 1001

Now, I would like to replace all "1001" with nothing, and also remove the "|"-separator behind 1001 if it exists, basically removing both "1001" and "1001|", so the resulting table looks like this:

name, field1
Jack 1000|1003
Berg 2000|2004
Paul 1000
Jane

My tries, been plenty, but here are some:

Code:
UPDATE UserTable
SET field1 = REPLACE(field1, '1001', '')
UPDATE UserTable
SET field1 = REPLACE(field1, '1001|', '')

But the above queries replaces field1 only if the whole field matches '1001' or '1001|'...

The above queries do work, just like I want them to. I just happened to write them in this order on this post... did not do a copy of the actual query.

Validating The Insertion Of A Record Into Database Against Existing Records.

Jan 31, 2008

Hello. I currently have a website that allows appointments to be booked up for doctors. i currently have an insert record page built using ASP components. SQL Server 2012 :: Replacing String (Particular Part Of A Row In A Table With New Value)

Oct 7, 2015

I'm trying to replace a particular part of a row in a table with a new value.

The row is called "DataPath" and it has a lot of values like so:

mashOperationsComponent Data FilesSantec

I want to run a query to replace the mash with our DFS namespace share name companysharesDepartments but keep everything else past the mash part of the original row.

I'm currently running this query, it says it is altering 30,000 rows, but it doesn't look like it's doing anything at all..

UPDATE dbo.Part
SET DataPath = REPLACE(DataPath,'company.localsharesDepartments','mash')
WHERE DataPath like 'mash\%'

So for example, it would change the mash above to

company.localsharesDepartmentsOperationsComponent Data FilesSantec

How To Automatically Create New Records In A Foreign Table When Inserting Records In A Primary Table.

Sep 13, 2006

Ok, I'm really new at this, but I am looking for a way to automatically insert new records into tables.  I have one primary table with a primary key id that is automatically generated on insert and 3 other tables that have foreign keys pointing to the primary key.  Is there a way to automatically create new records in the foreign tables that will have the new id?  Would this be a job for a trigger, stored procedure?  I admit I haven't studied up on those yet--I am learning things as I need them. Thanks.

Replacing Tables In SQL Express By An Updated Table Of The Same Name Through VB2008 Code

Apr 17, 2008

Hello,

I have an application written in Visual Basic 2008, using a SQL Express 2008 database. This application runs in several locations on stand-alone PC's and there is no network connecting them.
I have to maintain a SQL database in a central location an would like to be able to distribute updated tables from that central location by using an USB stick and replace the tables of the same name in the different locations with the updated ones on my USB stick.
This I would like to do using code within my VB2008 application.

Can someone please help me on the way to achieve this. Is it possible to give some concrete code examples, as I am a newbie as a SQL Server user.

Many thanks and greetings,

Michel

SQL Server 2014 :: Selecting Records From Table 2 While Counting Records In Table 1

Aug 11, 2015

Table1 contains fields Groupid, UserName,Category, Dimension

Table2 contains fields Group, Name,Category, Dimension (Group and Name are not in Table1)

So basically I need to read the records in Table1 using Groupid and each time there is a Groupid then select records from Table2 where Table2.Category in (Select Catergory from Table1)
and Table2.Dimension in (Select Dimension from Table1)

In Table1 There might be 10 Groupid records all of which are different.

Transact SQL :: Retrieve All Records From Parent Table And Any Records From Child Table

Oct 21, 2015

I am trying to write a query that will retrieve all students of a particular class and also any rows in HomeworkLogLine if they exist (but return null if there is no row). I thought this should be a relatively simple LEFT join but I've tried every possible combination of joins but it's not working.

SELECT
Student.StudentSurname + ', ' + Student.StudentForename AS Fullname,
HomeworkLogLine.HomeworkLogLineTimestamp,
HomeworkLog.HomeworkLogDescription,
ROW_NUMBER() OVER (PARTITION BY HomeworkLogLine.HomeworkLogLineStudentID ORDER BY

[Code] ...

It's only returning two rows (the students where they have a row in the HomeworkLogLine table).

SQL Server 2012 :: Replacing CASE Statement In Update With Table-driven Logic

Oct 20, 2014

I have a stored proc that contains an update which utilizes a case statement to populate values in a particular column in a table, based on values found in other columns within the same table. The existing update looks like this (object names and values have been changed to protect the innocent):

UPDATE dbo.target_table
set target_column =
case
when source_column_1= 'ABC'then 'XYZ'
when source_column_2= '123'then 'PDQ'

[Code] ....

The powers that be would like to replace this case statement with some sort of table-driven structure, so that the mapping rules defined above can be maintained in the database by the business owner, rather than having it embedded in code and thus requiring developer intervention to perform changes/additions to the rules.

The rules defined in the case statement are in a pre-defined sequence which reflects the order of precedence in which the rules are to be applied (in other words, if a matching value in source_column_1 is found, this trumps a conflicting matching value in source_column_2, etc). A case statement handles this nicely, of course, because the case statement will stop when it finds the first "hit" amongst the WHEN clauses, testing each in the order in which they are coded in the proc logic.

What I'm struggling with is how to replicate this using a lookup table of some sort and joins from the target table to the lookup to replace the above case statement. I'm thinking that I would need a lookup table that has column name/value pairings, with a sequence number on each row that designates the row's placement in the precedence hierarchy. I'd then join to the lookup table somehow based on column names and values and return the match with the lowest sequence number, or something to that effect.

Copying All Rows From One Table Into Another Existing Table And Overwriting Data

Feb 15, 2005

i have 2 tables (both containing the same column names/datatypes), say table1 and table2.. table1 is the most recent, but some rows were deleted on accident.. table2 was a backup that has all the data we need, but some of it is old, so what i want to do is overwrrite the rows in table 2 that also exist in table 1 with the table 1 rows, but the rows in table 2 that do not exist in table one, leave those as is.. both tables have a primary key, user_id.

any ideas on how i could do this easily?

thanks

Tempoary Table Question - How To Create One With The Same Schema As An Existing Table?

Jul 28, 2006

Hello,

I'd like to create a temporary table with the same schema as an exiting table. How can I do this without hard coding the column definitions into the temporary table definition?

I'd like to do something like:

CREATE TABLE #tempTable LIKE anotherTable

..instead of...

CREATE TABLE #tempTable (id INT PRIMARY KEY, created DATETIME NULL etc...

I'm sure there must be a simple way to do this!

Many thanks,

Ben S

SQL 2012 :: Importing Excel Table Into Existing Table?

Aug 25, 2014

I am using the DTS wizard and having problems importing excel into an existing table.

Problem is that various column in excel are defined as double in the wizard but in my db table it is defined as an integer.

How do I get around this issue so the data types in excel can match up accordingly to my defined data type in my db table?

The wizard does a bad job of guessing the correct data type.

I have heard of using a staging table to import from excel and using that as my source to import into my existing table.
