Replication - Changes To Server Database's Impact To Local Database
Jul 20, 2005
We have a SQLSERVER database that is replicated to many users.
We are currently in an expansion phase where we need to make changes
to the server database. Each time we rollout a new release, we are
deleting the local replicating database and recreating.
Is there any way to automatically transfer the changes from the server
to existing local database without deleting?

And my database 'DB1' , 'DB2' has collation set to Japanese unicode.
My sql team has informed they cannot change system collation as it hosts other db's as well.
My Query: What will be the impact of changing collation from JP to Latin.

I have multiple web databases for storefront orders as linked servers on SQL Server 2008 R2. I need to organize the data for these orders into a structure that can be imported into my ERP application db frequently either on demand or periodically during the day. We are essentially trying to make the manual order entry process automated. My thought was to get the data into views that resemble the schema of the order table in my application db and then schedule a stored procedure with sql jobs or a load routine from within the ERP application that would insert data from the view into the order table.

We have the following scenario:
Server A replicates Database A to Server B.
Server C has Database A on it as well, but in standby mode. We are applying the transaction logs generated by Database A on Server A to the database on Server C leaving it in standby mode each time.
Let's say we had planned maintenance for Server Aand dumped the last set of transactions on Server A in standby mode to be applied to to Server C. What happens to the replica on Server B? When I start to use Server C, can I backup its transactions and apply them to Server A, and then have those transactions replicated to Server B? And then what do I do when the maintenance is complete so that I can swithc back to Server A and have the replication continue on as before the maintenance to Server B?

Hello All,
When creating my database I have modeled some of the tables after the Adventureworks sample database.
There are some fields or entire tables in Adventureworks that I do not see an imediate use for, however; I would hate to ommit them to find out later they would have been benificial. (.eg territory table).
In general terms what would the impact be on size and performance of a database which contains tables or fields that do not contain data.
Thanks for your help!

I have been discussing this Service Broker issues in this forum for quite sometimes and sorry to bother u all again€¦ To make things more clearer before implementing in production environment I have few doubts and it should be clarified..
As discussed in the first link we can clear sys.conversation_endpoints by just giving ALTER DATABASE GPx SET NEW_BROKER WITH ROLLBACK IMMEDIATE. But my apprehension is that if we run this command on production server and it truncate this table€¦ what will be the impact and overall overhead on the system€¦ Is it recommended to give this statement on Production Server daily at less traffic times, to clear this table ?€¦ will it have adverse effect. I repeat I have downtime , I can even shutdown this server daily€¦
I also, just want to know why Microsoft has not looked into this aspects€¦ why the system itself is clearing the expired messages.. What is the thought behind this architecture
I have the script to run in batch€¦ but in high-level meetings it is always difficult to convince this architecture/process€¦
Thanks in advance

I noticed that a database I am working with has a compatibility level set to SQL Server 2000. The instance is actually SQL Server 2005. I'm guessing that it was created like this because the database originally existed on 2000 and was created via backup/restore.
I'm trying to figure out if this needs to be changed and if so how to go about making the change in a non-disruptive manner. What features of 2005 are turned off as a reult of having a 2000 compatibility level?

Being a very novice SQL Server administrator, I need to ask the experts a question.
How do I go about moving a database from 1 drive to another? The source drive (C is local to the server, but the target drive (E is on a Storage Area Network (SAN), although it is still a local drive for the server. I want to move the database from C: to E:. Can someone provide me with instructions?
Thanks,

We have 3 maintenance jobs configured in this particular DB instance:
Daily backup of system database - SubPlan1 (Check Database Integrity Task --> Rebuild Index Task-->Backup Database Task)Daily backup of user databases - Five subplans for each task : (Check DB integrity --> Rebuild Index -->Backup User Database, Backup Log -->Cleanup History)Weekly maintenance - SubPlan1 (Check Database integrity job (system+user DB)Â + rebuild index job (system+user DB) )
PROBLEM: I just noticed that the User DB Rebuild Index task has been running since the 03/04 and the Weekly maintenance plan - subplan1 since the 12/04.
Which job is "safe" to stop without impacting the database?

I am trying to use the Import Wizard to setup a daily job to import new records based on an ID field (PK). The source database is remote and a replica. I am inserting new records to update my table called the same thing. Both are SQL Native Client
Code Snippet
select *
from [CommWireless].[dbo].[iQclerk_SaleInvoicesAndProducts] as S1
join [IQ_REPLICA].[dbo].[iQclerk_SaleInvoicesAndProducts] as S2
on S1.SaleInvoiceID = S2.SaleInvoiceID
where S1.SaleInvoiceID > S2.SaleInvoiceID
When I parse the query, I keep getting an error message.
Deferred prepare could not be completed.
Statement(s) could not be prepared.
Invalid object name 'IQ_REPLICA.dbo.iQ_SaleInvoicesAndProducts'. (Microsoft SQL Native Client)
Anyone know an easy why to get this to work? Or should I add a create table to verify new records?

I'm using SQL Server Management Studio Express and I'm trying to figure out how to copy a table(s) from my local database to my web hosting database. I know how to do it in 2000, but it's completely different now. Is this feature not allowed on SSMSE? If so, then how do I deploy database tables to a web host?Also, how do you add local database(s) to SSMSE? I tried to use 'attach database' in SSMSE and it wouldn't allow me to navigate to My Documents folder where the database resides. Thanks...

I have my first small SQl Server 2005 database developed on my localserver and I have also its equivalent as an online database.I wish to update the local database (using and asp.net interface) andthen to upload the data (at least the amended data, but given thesmall size all data should be no trouble) to the online database.I think replication is the straight answer but I have no experience ofthis and I am wondering what else I might use which might be lesscomplicated. One solution is DTS (using SQL 2000 terms) but i am notsure if I can set this up (1) to overwrite existing tables and (2) notto seemingly remove identity attributes from fields set as identities.I know there are other possibilities but I would be glad of advice asto the likely best method for a small database updated perhaps onceweekly or at less frequent intervals,Best wishes, John Morgan

Hi,
How do I insert data that I have collected in a local database onto a table on my online ie hosted database which is on a different server?
At the moment I am just uploading all the data to the hosted DB but this is wasting bandwith as only a small percentage of data is actually selected and used.
I thought that if i used a local DB and then update the table on my hosted DB this would be much more efficient, but I am not sure how to write the SQL code to do this!
Do I do some kind of
INSERT INTO sample_table
SELECT xxx
FROM origanal_table
Or is it more complicated than this?
Thanks

Hi,Ive been building a project on a local server and now need to transfer the files and database over to the live server. I have managed to transfer the files quite easily, however I am having a few problems transferring the database using Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio. When I try importing data to the live database, all the data and tables are brought across however some of the values for the fields are lost. For example all the fields which had a primary key no longer have one, and all the set default values for the fields are also lost. Ive been considering just going through every table in the database and re-entering the correct values for the fields, but this seems a bit time consuming and I'm also concerned about possible errors which could arise as there will be an inconsistency.Another method I tried was copying the SQL query across which created all the tables and the correct values for the fields. However when I tried to import the data an error was produced as you cannot import data into a table which has read only fields etc..Does anyone know a solution?Thanks for your time.

First of all let me explain that I am a complete newbie to this SQL stuff. I am in the process of reading a book, and followed the books suggestions for what I want to do, but it doesn't work. I know this has been covered several times in this forum, but no one post in particular covered exactly what I want to do.
I want to copy the database from the server to my local machine.
First, do I need to have SQL running on my machine in order to copy the database? I do have Enterprise Manager running, does that mean SQL Server is running locally?
Secoond, I tried using the Copy Wizard, but when I get to the target list, my local machine is not listed. How do I get it listed so I can copy the database?
I hope my questions are not too stupid... but then I'd be stupid if I didn't ask questions.
Thanks in advance for your help...

Hello,
I recently read the following book:
http://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-Server-2005-Reporting-Services/dp/0072262397/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/104-5275187-2065567?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1194662002&sr=8-1
It was excellent.
I was hoping to find an example of the following:
My company has a desktop application with a local database (sql server 2k express) I would like to be able to have local reports and if the user likes the report they are viewing, the user could "publish" that report to the server. Since the database is local, the report data source cannot point to that database. So, it would publish the report AND the data in it.
For this use case, what is the recommended strategy of moving the data with the report? Would i create a small xml file and then dynamically build a datasource that points to that xml? Any best practices advice?
If i could find an example would be fantastic.
Thanks for your help,
Dan

This is what I sometimes want:
I have installed on a localmachine sqlexpress. Also my application is installed on the local machine.
But for the night-backup of the database I want to put the database on the company server.
Let's say the database is on: X:datamydatabase.mdf
Why cant't I attach this database with the manager of sqlexpress
Second:
I have installed on local machine sqlexpress AND also the database
Why can't I backup the file to the server like:
BACKUP DATABASE [mydatabase] to DISK=x:datamydatabase.bak WITH FORMAT
It looks I can only backup to the localmachine.
thanks a lot

I am at the stage of architecting my solution
My goal is to develop the system on a windows application and pda
There is a central server which will create a publication called inventory
The laptops which host the windows application will be subscribers to the central server using merge replication
The client now wants the PDA using SQL Mobile to synchronize with the local subscirber database on the laptop using active sync. They dont want to do it via WIFI to the IIS Server at the central server
I have been reading for days and I am still unsure whether this is possible to do.
I know Appforge provide a conduit for palm to access synchronization but not local sql databases
I would appreciate your help immensley

Hi
Scenario: In general user will take database backup from database server to local system. User perform some changes to his local database based on his requirement. Again user connects to database server and click on update, local database should update to server database by informing each record status to the user. ex: record 1 updated / call closed do you want to update?
Here local database is going to be Pocket pc database and server database is on SQLDatabase. Can any one suggest best way to implement this feature in Windows Pocket pc, c#. I would appreciate your reply.

Now, I want to have a fresh copy of the remote database of SQL Server at my local computer and whenever there is change in remote database(insertions,deletion or updation), my local database copy may gets synchronized(i.e changes get reflected in this local copy).
Can any one help me? If it is possibel by using Vb.net code, it is very well, and if there is some Sql Server wizard that can help me do that, please reply to me.
Thanks in advance.

Hi, I have been creating a web store, which we will be hosting on our Windows Server 2003 system. I am also writing a windows application that will be running on our client systems on the same network/domain. I have no need to allow internet access to the database, just within our domain. Pretty much the windows application will be running and whenever a customer places an order, the program will automatically pop-up the needed information for our credit card processing, and shipping department. So far I have been able to establish a connection to our server by creating a data connection under the server explorer. However, it does not list any databases whatsoever, the web site has been published using Visual Studio 2005 Professional on the server, and is in 100% working order. I have searched and haven't found anything concrete on this, i'm sure its just something simple that im missing. It appears that the server is definetely connected to the database (since the website is fully functional), but it is not listing the information for other systems to access it. If anyone has any ideas, please let me know. Thank you

Hi, I'm developing a website using VWD 2005 Express, which needs a Membership system and a products database. Using the VWD inherent Web Site Administration tool makes the membership set up easy but by default it creates a 'Local' SQL database in a folder named 'Apps_Data' in the VWD project. My question is: considering I will need to upload my web site to a Hosting Service, would it be better to change the default so that the membership systems, and the product database I need, are created in an SQL 'Server' database instead of a 'Local' database?
The hosting service I am considering using is having a bit of a problem understanding this question, I hope it makes sense to someone or am I asking a stupid question?
Regards
Sean.

I lost my database on my pc as I format my hard drive. Now, how I can get a copy of my ms sql server database from my hosting to work with my local pc? I need to have a local copy so that I can develop my site without internet connection. For your information, I used Hostforlife.eu hosting service. I have searched and tried many methods to do it, but no luck yet. For example, I created a backup on Hostforlife.eu and restore backup file on my pc, but nothing happens. Then I created a new database, and re-created its structure same as the one on Hostforlife, then I used the import wizard to import data from them to my pc. Again, nothing happens.

I am using the following C# code to establish a SQL connect to a SQL database file:
// connection string
// attach a SQL database file to a local SQL server express instance
string _connectionString = @"Server=.SQLExpress; AttachDbFilename=C:BalanceDatabase_1.mdf; Trusted_Connection=Yes; User Instance=True";
// using System.Data.SqlClient;
SqlConnection _sqlConnection = new SqlConnection(_connectionString);
// open the connection
_sqlConnection.Open();
// do something
// close the connection
_sqlConnection.Close();
So far, the connection works fine.
However, next, I want to copy the database file to another folder. So the following codes:
// source database file name
string sourceDatabaseFileName = @"C:BalanceDatabase_1.mdf";
// target database file name
string targetDatabaseFileName = @"D:BalanceDatabase_1.mdf";
// copy database file
System.IO.File.Copy(sourceDatabaseFileName, targetDatabaseFileName, true);
Then the program came with runtime exception: "IOException was unhandled: The process cannot access the file 'C:BalanceDatabase_1.mdf' because it is being used by another process."
Is it because the database file was sill attached to the local SQL Server express instance? What can I do to bypass this problem? Detach the database file? or dispose the local SQL Server express instance?
Many thanks indeed!
