Replication Configuration Helper (Id Buy It!)

Sep 18, 2006

Let's face it - setting up SQL 2005 merge pull replication using HTTPS between numerous SQL Server 2005 Express clients and one or more Publishers is an overly complicated exercise.

It should be easy. Why is it so hard?

In a nutshell: The connection chain and security chain is long and when there's a problem the error messages just don't point you to the answer - You have to search for it;re-read the doco; talk to gurus; use logging tools;re-read the error message 100 times; etc. etc.

It should be possible to create a 'Replication Configuration Helper' that steps -step by step - through both the connection chain (App - to SQL Express - to local network components - to the TCP/IP network - to the web server - to the publishers/distributers) and through the security chain (App - to SQL Express authentication - local agents including certificate errors - to ISS server authentication - to Distributer authentication -to Publisher authentication to Article authentication).

Let's face it - the steps occur in sequence and each step can be tested and the appropriate error message raised - TOGETHER WITH INSTRUCTIONS ON HOW TO RESOLVE! (I mean - what's use is an error message when you have to cut and past the error message into a browser and search for ages before you get the instructions on how to resolve the problem?)

So c'mon - someone volenteer to write a 'Replication Configuration Helper'

Replication Configuration?

Nov 6, 2006

Our website and sql database are hosted away from our offices and is updated via the web by customers and by us in our offices. However due to our slow internet connection we would like to bring a replication server into our office and have the two databases talk to each other when a change occurs.(Customers updating the public database and us update a local one).

I have seen sites mention circular replication is troublesome and may not work, is this the case or is it just a matter of correct configuration?

Any advice, tips etc would be appreciated.

Thanks

Configuration Of Replication And Mail

Hello;

** I'am a student* in UTC in France and I have a probleme with a replication in
SQLServer 6.5.

The message error is that:
1-Replication cannot be installed as @@SERVERNAME is NULL

2-If Replication is uninstalled, all publications will be
eliminated and the distribution database[if it exist]will be
dropped. After the process has completed, this session will be
disconnected from the SQL Server. Do you want to unistall
replication?

3-Error 2812:[SQL Server)Strored procedure

->I don't know why SQL Server want to found* this procedure;
perhaps because last time I creat a database named
'ma_base' and i do a replication a then i dropped it??

when i dropped, i receive this message:
4-Error911:[SQL Server]Attempt to locate ebtry in sysdatabase for database 'ma_base' by name failed no entry found under that name, Make sure that name is entered property.

And when i create a database with name 'ma_base', i receive this message:

I don't know what i do???

Replication Environment Configuration Help!!

Oct 24, 2007

I have a production server log shipping to a secondary server every 30 minutes (both SQL 2000), which the second server is used for both a warm standby server and for reporting from users. Issue: the log shipping locks the DB so reporting can't be done until the load is finished, the load to the second set of databases has taken up to 15 minutes to finish allowing the users only 15 minutes to run reports, this is not acceptable. The server also needs to be used for DR.

I am looking for another solution, I can't use Transactional Log shipping as not all of the tables in the databases have a primary key identified. So, I am looking for a real-time or near real-time reporting server that is more available to running reports and a warm standby server for Disaster recovery. I am trying to figure out what SQL Server 2000 has to provide (or even 2005 or 2008?) or I am also looking at some third party software, but not sure what is the best for a reasonable price.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks....JB

Me.ViewState("Make") = SqlHelper.ExecuteScalar(MyConnectionString, "usp_GetMake", (dr("MakeID")).To String)

Im not sure of the syntax as I know that it is basically using two different ways of reading a database. Is there an equivalent for the datreader which can be used with SQL Helper?

Active Directory Helper Service Aborting Upon Startup

Sep 6, 2007

On a fairly new install of SQL 2005 64-bit, upon bootup the Active Directory Helper Serivice is aborting with the error 3221225572 (0XC0000064). When an attempt is made to start the service manually the following error appears: "Windows could not start teh SQL Server Active Directory Helper on Local Computer. For more infromation, review the System Event Log. If this is a non-Microsoft service, contact the service vendor, and refer to the service-specific error code - 1073741724."

The service is strating up under the network services account, which I am suspicous may be a problem. Currently the SQL server is running under SQL 2005 SP2 with no post service pack hotfixes. Do you have any advice on how to get the service to launch without errors?

Configuration Manager - Which Configuration Type To Chose ?

Jan 14, 2006

It seems to me, that the best way is to have one Environment Varible containing the name of the SQL Server, so that you can look up the configuration in the SSIS Configuration Table when you run the package.

Is this the preferable way of doing it ? I would like to hear some positive/negative comment of why chosing a configuration type instead of another.

It seems to me that putting all of the configuration in the Environment variable is harder work but most secure (server breakdown vs table corruption/database error...)

Let's have some comments

Configuration For Configuration Package? Is This Possible?

Mar 6, 2006

Hi Guys,

Here's the current scenario:

I am creating a windows application to manage my ssis packages.

My SSIS packages use package configurations, and by default connect to the "SSIS Configurations" table in sql server.

However, I want it to connect to a view instead of this table, so i create a view "vwSSIS_Configurations" and point the package configuration to use the view in sql server.

The application SHOULD be capable of altering the package configuration's configuration and switch its connection between the default "ssis configurations" table, and the view.

Is this possible? I cannot think of a way which I can have my application switch the package configuration's connection.

Thanks,
kervy

Replication Issues After A Database Restore - Unable To Drop Or Create Transactional Replication

Sep 13, 2007

Hi,I have transactional replication set up on on of our MS SQL 2000 (SP4)Std Edition database serverBecause of an unfortunate scenario, I had to restore one of thepublication databases. I scripted the replication module and droppedthe publication first. Then did a full restore. When I try to set up the replication thru the script, it created thepublication with the following error messageServer: Msg 2714, Level 16, State 5, Procedure SYNC_FCR ToGPRPTS_GL00100, Line 1There is already an object named 'SYNC_FCR To GPRPTS_GL00100' in thedatabase. It seems the previous replication has set up these system viewsSYNC_FCR To GPRPTS_GL00100. And I have tried dropping the replicationmodule again to see if it drops the views but it didn't.The replication fails with some wired error & complains about thisviews when I try to run the synch..I even tried running the sp_removedbreplication to drop thereplication module, but the views do not seem to disappear. My question is how do I remove these system views or how do I make thereplication work without using these views or create new views.. Whyis this creating those system views in the first place?I would appreciate if anyone can help me fix this issue. Please feelfree to let me know if any additional information or scripts needed. Thanks in advance..Regards,Aravin Rajendra.

SQL Express Replication And Problems Accessing Data After Replication

Jul 28, 2006

Hi,

I have a VB.net app that access a SQL Express database. I have transactional repliaction set up on a SQL 2000 database (the publisher) and a pull subscription from the VB.net app. I use RMO in the VB app to connect to the publisher. My problem is I am getting some strange behaviour as follows

- if I run the app and invoke the pull subscription it works fine. If I then close my app and go back in, I can access my data without any problem

- If I run the app and try to access data in my SQL Express database it works fine. I can then close the app, reopen it and run the pull subscription it works fine

however.......

- if I run the app, invoke the pull subscription (which runs fine), and then try to access data in my local SQL Express database without firstly closing and reopening the app, I get a login error

- if I run the app, try to access data in my local SQL Express database (which works fine), and then try to run the pull subscription I get a "the process cannot acces the file as it is being used by another process" error. In this case I need to restart the SQL Express service to be able to run replication again.

I get exactly the same behaviour when I use the Windows Sync tool (with my app open at the same time) instead of my RMO code to replicate the data.

I am using standard ADO.Net 2 code to access my SQL Express data in the app and closing all connections etc

Any advice appreciated !

Thanks
Ronan

How Do We Add A New Column To A Merge Replication Article, But Specify It As Not For Replication?

Aug 30, 2007

Hi all,

I know that adding a column using ALTER TABLE to add a column automatically allows SQLSERVER 2005 to replicate the schema changes to the subscribers, however, I would like to add a new column to an existing article that is being used for merge replication, however, I don't want this column to be replicated. Re-initialising the subscriptions is not a option. Help would be appreciated.

I am using SQLSERVER 2005 (SP1).

Replication :: Transactional Replication Removal Sequence

Sep 2, 2015

I have been researching on the proper steps or sequence to follow to completely remove SQL Server 2012 Transactional Replication.  I have read articles about using SSMS as well as using replication stored procedures and some procedures use SQLCMD or just regular TSQL executed in SSMS.  I have also read articles where people said all you really need is connect to the Publisher instance, find the publication you want to remove and choose "Delete" and everything will be taken care of behind the scene. I have three SQL servers that participate in transactional replication.  SQL-P (publisher),

SQL-D (distributor) and SQL-S (subscriber).  Do I need to connect to the distributor instance and the subscriber instance when removing transactional replication or is it just really connecting to the publisher and click delete on the publication? I want everything gone including any metadata, systems tables, distributions db and any other replication objects created during the initial configuration.

DB Replication Or Table Replication Via Triggers?

Apr 17, 2007

Hello everyone,I am involved in a scenario where there is a huge (SQL Server 2005)production database containing tables that are updated multiple timesper second. End-user reports need to be generated against the data inthis database, and so the powers-that-be came to the conclusion that areporting database is necessary in order to offload report processingfrom production; of course, this means that data will have to bereplicated to the reporting database. However, we do not need all ofthe data in the production database, and perhaps a filtering criteriacan be established where only certain rows are replicated over to thereporting database as they're inserted (and possibly updated/deleted).The current though process is that the programmers designing thequeries/reports will know exactly what data they need from productionand be able to modify the replication criteria as needed. For example, programmer A might write a report where the data he needs can beexpressed in a simple replication criteria for table T where column X= "WOOD" and column Y = "MAHOGANY". Programmer B might come along amonth later and write a report whose relies on the same table T wherecolumn X = "METAL" and column Z in (12, 24, 36). Programmer B willhave to modify Programmer A's replication criteria in such a way as toaccomodate both reports, in this case something like "Copy rows fromtable T where (col X = "WOOD" and col Y = "MAHOGANY") or (col X ="METAL" and col Z in (12, 24, 36))". The example I gave is reallytrivial of course but is sufficient to give you an idea of what thecurrent thought-process is.I assume that this is a requirement that many of you may haveencountered in the past and I am wondering what solutions you wereable to come up with. Personally, I believe that the above method isprone to error (in this case the use of triggers to specifyreplication criteria) and I'd much rather use replication services tocopy tables in their entirety. However, this does not seem to be anoption in my case due to the sheer size of certain tables. Is thereanything out there that performs replication based on complexprogrammer defined criteria? Are triggers a viable alternative? Anyalternative out-of-the-box solutions?Any feedback would be appreciated.Regards!Anthony

Merge Replication Set Off Transactional Replication

I am working on bringing our disaster recovery site to be a live site. Currently we replicate to one of out servers (server B) with merge replication (from server A). Server A also does one way transactional replication form some table to several other servers including servers at the DR site.

This setup is not going to be fast enough for what we need so I am wondering if a table is receiving merge replication will the merge updates also replicate down the transaction path??

Example...
Server B update a row and merges to Server A. With this update them replicate (via transactional) to Server C??

SQL 6.5 Configuration

Mar 12, 2001

I have a question about SQL Server configurations, especially those related to memory.

We are running SQL 6.5 SP5a on a 400 MHz machine with 1GB of RAM.

Our memory setting is 409600 (800 MB), which according to all the documentation that I have read is a conservative figure. The problem I believe is in our settings for Locks and Open Objects. The settings that are in place are Locks=3000000 and Open Objects=500000.

I am not a DBA, I am a developer, but have somehow become part of the DBA team. These settings seem out of proportion with the memory we have. The reason given for 3 million locks, by other members of the team, is that our biggest unit of work is a query that performs a select into of approx. 3 million records. To further compound things, we are getting an out of memory error on the server after only a day of running.

The other members of the team have implemented a start and start of the service to occur at 4 AM every morning, but I am convinced that this is not the appropriate action, but they will not action any configuration changes unless I can prove that it will help the memory problem and not effect the queries.

If anyone has any information or links to information regarding Locks and how they relate to query performance, or at least a sample of what your settings are it would go a long way towards convincing either myself or the rest of the team what direction to go.

Thank you,
Jeremy N. Sutka

Configuration

May 28, 2008

Hello,

I have SQL Reporting Services 2005 installed. When I go into the SQL Reporting Services Configuration Manager I immediately get an error that says that "No report servers were found on the specified machine" then Details: Invalid Namespace.

The machine that it is running on is our report server. The name in the Machine Name says the name of the report server not the name of the specific machine so maybe this is the problem? I think the name of the report server should go in instance? Problem is that it won't let me change anything and it just gives me that error and everything else on the screen is disabled.

Has anyone experienced this?

SQL Configuration

Mar 24, 2008

Hey guys, got a question regarding hardware configuration for a new SQL server we are installing here. We are migrating from a Windows 2000 standard, SQL 2000 standard box with 4GB of RAM to a Windows 2000 datacenter, SQL 2000 enterprise box with 32GB of RAM.

What would be the best way to set this up in Enterprise Manager? Should I just let SQL Dynamically use the RAM or should I select a fixed amount? Also with the processors, should I allow SQL to use all available processors or just 3 of the processors? Also with such a large amount of RAM, I've read people setting there pagefile to 0 so there is no load on the hard drives.

Let me know what you guys think, thanks!!

SQL Configuration

Oct 2, 2007

We are running SQL 7 on a server, and are moving to a new server and will beupgrading to SQL 2005 at the same time. Currently, both the old and the newservers have two drives, one for programs and one for data. With the current configuration, SQL 7 and the data are both installed on thedata drive, in the MSSQL7 directory. Our sys admin wants to install SQL 2005on the program drive of the new server, while putting our databases on thedata drive. I argue that if SQL itself is on the program drive, then thesystem databases will be in one place, while our databases will be inanother. So I'd prefer to have SQL 2005 installed on the data drive, as itis now.I'm interested in any feedback regarding what you guys think is the betterconfiguration, and also if there's any performance hit from having theprogram and the database on two drives of the same machine. Thanks,Neil
