Replication :: Copy Foreign Key Constraints Value Is Always False

Sep 23, 2015

I want to replicate the  foreign keys to secondary.I changed the value Copy foreign key constraints value is to True.

I changed this value at pub properties - Articles -

And then it is asking for MARK for reinitialization with the new snapshot.I clicked ok.

When I checked sync status it has given the message like initial snapshot is not yet available.I started the snapshot and the subscription started replication records. When check at pup properties the value Copy foreign key constraints again false.

After changing the value  to true it is showing as False.

UGH! Failed To Enable Constraints. One Or More Rows Contain Values Violating Non-null, Unique, Or Foreign-key Constraints.

Jan 9, 2007

I know this is probably a flick of a switch but I cannot figure out which switch.  Setup is SQL Server / Stored Procedures / DAL / BLL(skipped for testing) / PL.  The stored procedure queries from only one table and two columns are ignored because they are being phased out.  I can run the stored procedure and preview the data in the DAL but when I create a page with an ODS linked to the DAL and a GridView I get this error.  I checked every column that does not allow nulls and they all have values.  I checked unique columns (ID is the only unique and is Identity=Yes in the table definition).  I checked foreign-key columns for values that are not in the foreign table and there are none.  Any ideas why do I get this?

Failed To Enable Constraints. One Or More Rows Contain Values Violating Non-null, Unique, Or Foreign-key Constraints.

Jan 17, 2008

Hi,
I am getting the above error when trying to load a report into my Web Application, I have tracked the error down to one specific field in my database. Even though this field is a NVarChar field and is of size 30 it would seem that  there is an issue returning the value from the field. I can write it into the database no problems but when I try to get it out of the database it returns the above error.
e.g
MOB 401.908.804 - Fails
0401.907.324 - okay
8239 9082 (pager) - fails
Anyone got an idea on how to fix this????
Regards..
Peter.

Foreign Key Constraints?

I have two tables, T1 and T2.T1 has a foreign Key that refers to a key in T2.The way that I see it, its only possible to insert something into T1 ifthere already exists a tuple in T2 with the same value in key. That means that I always have to insert something into T2 before insertinginto T1Is that correct?

When following a script to create some tables and constraints, it is recommended that you name the FK constraint? Otherwise it appears with numbers after it. Is this the way 2005 creates them or has this always been the naming convention?

Disabling Foreign Key Constraints

Dec 22, 2000

I want to disable foreign key constraints en mass. Is there a way to do this?

I know that I can go into each table and navigate to the Relationship tab of Properties and uncheck the "Enforce relationship for INSERTs and UPDATEs" box, but I'd much prefer to automate this process with a query since there are 160+ tables and probably 200+ relationships to disable.

I figure that sysconstraints my be the ticket, but I will keep experimenting until I get the right solution. In the meantime, any insight to steer me in the right direction is appreciated.

Foreign Key Constraints And Indexes

Hi All,

I know that when you specify a PRIMARY KEY or UNIQUE constraint for a table, SQL Server creates a unique index for the primary key columns.

What about foreign keys? Does SQL Server creates an index when you create a foreign key?
I have looked in Books Online and on the Internet, but couldn't find any information.

Thanks in advance.

Enforce Foreign Key Constraints

Oct 22, 2007

I have recently restored an SQL Server 2000 database on SQL Server 2005
A number of constraints on the database had previously been disabled

A monthly process that is carried out, imports data into 'Table A'.
This process now crashed, being unable to truncate table as it referenced by 'Table B'

Although when i check the properties of the constraint the 'enforce foreign key constraints' is set to no.

Is there a known issue with restoring databases on 2005,

Any help greatly appreciated.

Foreign Key Constraints Execution Order?

Sep 4, 2006

How can I get and or set the order in which the cascading deletes of a table are executed??
I have table A with cascading deletes to Table B and Table C. Records in table B can not be deleted if they are referenced from table C. So if I delete C, then B and then A; that would work. But B then C and then A might be prohibited due to the constraint between B and C. Therefor the order of execution of the cascading delete is important.

Using GUID Fields As Primary Keys W/ Foreign Key Constraints

Nov 17, 2005

Ok, so I've broken down and decided to write myself an invoicing
program.  I'd like to use GUID fields as the Primary Keys in my
table.  Now, I basicly bill for two seperate items:

Deliverables and Services.

So, my Layout's gonna look something like

Create Table Invoice(
     ID UniqueIdentifier Primary Key,
     -- Other Data
);

Create Deliverable(
    ID uniqueidentifier Primary Key,
    ParentInvoice uniqueidentifier,
   -- Other data);
--...

Im sure there are probems with that as it's written feel free to edify me as to what they are.

my questions are such:

1) Does a uniqueidentifier field automagically get a value?
2) If not how do I generate one in TSQL?
3) If so, what do I use to store my Foreign Keys.
4) How do I declare my Foreign key constraints?

Truncate Database Tables Based On Foreign Key Constraints

Nov 5, 2007

Guys,

I have 600 tables in my database, out of which 40 tables are look up value tables. I want generate truncate scripts which truncates all the tables in order of Parent child relationship excluding lookup tables. Is there any way to do this apart from figuring out Parent Child relationship and then writing the truncate statements for each of the table.

For example

EmployeeDetail table references Employee table
DepartmentDetail table references Department table
Department table references Employee table

My truncate script should be

TRUNCATE TABLE DEPARTMENTDETAIL
TRUNCATE TABLE EMPLOYEEDETAIL
TRUNCATE TABLE DEPARTMENT
TRUNCATE TABLE EMPLOYEE

Is there any automated way to figure out parent and child tables and generate truncate script for the same.

Thanks

SQL Server 2008 :: When Renaming A Table / It Doesn't Rename Foreign Key Constraints

Sep 21, 2015

I'm working on creating a new version of an existing table. I want to keep the old table around, only with a different name. In looking this up I found there's a system routine named sp_rename, which looks like it will work fine. However in thinking about this I realized that the foreign key constraints defined on the table (there's 3 of them) are likely to not be renamed, correct?

If I'm correct, then I suppose I could rename the table, then drop the 3 foreign key constraints, and create them new using different names for those foreign key constraints.

Replication Of Check Constraints

Jan 5, 2007

I have tables that are replicated using transactional and merge replication. As a result I am unable to use automatic identity management as transactional replication doesnt seem to understand it.

Therefore I have implemented a version of the automatic mechanisms that seems to work in a hybrid environment. It is based on a central table that holds the maximum identity for each table that has been issued to date. Valid identity ranges are issued to each publisher and subscriber as needed in a similar way to the automatic mechanisms and tables are reseeded as needed.

I want to enforce the ranges in a similar way to the automatic mechanism using a check constraint similar to this:

alter table [dbo].[test1] with NOCHECK add CONSTRAINT repl_identity_range_48DF13ED_D503_4F5C_AED9_4E504D03E752 check NOT FOR REPLICATION (([id] > 10001 and [id] <= 20001) or ([id] > 50001 and [id] <= 70001))

This works OK on a client subscriber, but if the change is made on the publisher, then the alter statement itself is replicated out to all clients which is not what is wanted. I have traced the automatic mechanisms using profiler and they issue an alter statement as above following dropping of the constraint but the check constraint isnt replicated. I can't see how this is achieved.

How do I stop the check constraint being replicated?

The article property schema option can be set to stop replicating check constraints, but this seems to have no effect. If the publication property replicate_ddl is set to 0 then I do see the behaviour that I want. However, I do need to be able to replicate most schema changes due to upgrades etc so this doesnt look like a viable option except possibly for the transactional publication.

Any help would be much appreciated

Thanks

SS2005 Replication: Can You Replicate Constraints Without Reinitializing?

Jan 11, 2007

We have a two SQL Server 2005 databases set up using Transactional Replication. My manager has asked me to set it up to replicate constraints (default, fk, et) on the tables in the main publication. I said sure, I can do it, but I will have to re-initialize the subscription. He said there was a way to do it without re-initializing the subscription. I cannot find anything in my research to indicate that there is a method to do so (via call sp_ functions, etc). Is it indeed possible to replicate constraints on replicated tables without re-initializing the who subscription? The reason he does not want me to perform a re-initialization is that we are a few weeks before moving into production, and a full re-initialization takes 1.5 days, which would impact system availability.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Merge Replication - Foreign Keys

Jul 9, 2004

I am currently new to Merge Replication and have not been able to find one really simple underlying answer to the fundamentals of Merge Replciation....

Foreign Keys.... An example - I have two DBs in separate locations both adding new records. Assume that adding these new records create foreign key links to other tables. Of course when you come to synchronise - a foreign key in a table perhaps now relates to a different record.. How do you deal with this?

Eg: two DBs, the DBs both started out the same with 10 records in the CARS table for example. The two dbs also had 20 records in the MODEL table which states the model name and a foreign key relationship to the cars table. As the two DBs get updated separately and the result is now one DB has 2 new records in the car table for example and the other has 3 new records in its cars table... Of course these have corresponding entries in their MODEL table referencing primary keys. So how do I, using merge replication keep all these new records and update their foreign key references to suit as they synchronise?

It seems fundamental to merge replication and I cannot find advice anywhere on how to do this. Do I have to change both tables to use GUIDs as primary keys rather that incrementing numbers perhaps??

advice would be greatly appreciated

Merge Replication And Foreign Keys

Apr 10, 2007

i'm struggling with merge replication and foreign key constraints.

i have four tables:

- owners(id, name, firstname, address, phone)
- cars(id, licenceplate, ownerid) (thus with ownerid FK to the owners table)
- busses(id, licenceplate, ownerid) (thus with ownerid FK to the owners table)
- ships(id, licenceplate, ownerid) (thus with ownerid FK to the owners table)

now, i want to merge only the OWNERS table (article) between my 5 client pc's and 1 server.

I don't manage to reach this.
Using the merge replication upon all 4 tables works, but replicating only the owners table seems to be impossible.

Is it really impossible to replicate only the owners table, or do I forget something?

these are my create table scrips:
create table Owners (
id int identity,
name varchar(20),
firstname varchar(20),
address varchar(20),
phone varchar(20),
CONSTRAINT PK_owners
PRIMARY KEY(id)
);

create table cars (
id int identity,
licenceplate varchar(20),
ownerid int,
CONSTRAINT PK_cars
PRIMARY KEY(id),
CONSTRAINT FK_cars_ownerid
FOREIGN KEY(ownerid) REFERENCES owners(id) ON DELETE CASCADE
);

create table busses (
id int identity,
licenceplate varchar(20),
ownerid int,
CONSTRAINT PK_busses
PRIMARY KEY(id),
CONSTRAINT FK_busses_ownerid
FOREIGN KEY(ownerid) REFERENCES owners(id) ON DELETE CASCADE
);

create table ships (
id int identity,
licenceplate varchar(20),
ownerid int,
CONSTRAINT PK_ships
PRIMARY KEY(id),
CONSTRAINT FK_ships_ownerid
FOREIGN KEY(ownerid) REFERENCES owners(id) ON DELETE CASCADE

Merge Replication Foreign Key Problem

Dec 24, 2006

Hi there. I'm somewhat new to merge replication, and I've been having an issue with one of the scenarios that I've been trying to get working. I am using SQL 2005 on the server, with 2005 express on the client. I have 2 tables:

Photo - which has a PhotoID primary key

PhotoData - which has a PhotoDataID primary key, and a PhotoID foreign key

both primary keys are int, and set to identity. I only want the Photo table to replicate for the merge, because I want the data in the PhotoData table to only be called by demand through a web service (since the images in that table are too large to be included in the normal replication). However, when a client adds a photo to his local database (which adds a record in the photo table, and then it's actual image data in the photodata table), I can't sync the photo table any longer. The error I get is:

Could not drop object 'dbo.Photo' because it is referenced by a FOREIGN KEY constraint

I have the foreign key relationship marked as "not for replication", but that doesn't seem to help. Is there another way I should be doing this? Thanks for any help!

Handling Merge Replication Foreign Key Conflicts

Sep 20, 2007

I have SQL CE clients replicating against a SQL Server 2005 db using merge replication. The DB has a table A and a table B, which has a foreign key to table A. It is common in my application for records in table A to be deleted on the server. I'm running into issues when a table A record has been deleted, but table B records were created on the clients which point to that record. When I sync I get a conflict because the table B records cannot be applied at the server, and the table A delete cannot be applied at the client.

What I would like to happen is to have the table B records on the client be deleted by the merge process, and to create a log of the event. I've looked into creating a business logic handler to do this, but I'm not sure what type of conflict this is (UpdateDeleteConflict or otherwise), and I'm not sure that deleting the table B records is something I can do in the business logic handler.

This seems like it would be a common problem in merge replication. I'm not locked into using a custom business logic handler at all. Any suggestions are welcome.

Thanks.

Copy And Delete Table With Foreign Key References(...,...) On Delete Cascade?

Oct 23, 2004

Hello:
Need some serious help with this one...

Background:
Am working on completing an ORM that can not only handles CRUD actions -- but that can also updates the structure of a table transparently when the class defs change. Reason for this is that I can't get the SQL scripts that would work for updating a software on SqlServer to be portable to other DBMS systems. Doing it by code, rather than SQL batch has a chance of making cross-platform, updateable, software...

Anyway, because it needs to be cross-DBMS capable, the constraints are that the system used must work for the lowest common denominator....ie, a 'recipe' of steps that will work on all DBMS's.

The Problem:
There might be simpler ways to do this with SqlServer (all ears :-) - just in case I can't make it cross platform right now) but, with simplistic DBMS's (SqlLite, etc) there is no way to ALTER table once formed: one has to COPY the Table to a new TMP name, adding a Column in the process, then delete the original, then rename the TMP to the original name.

This appears possible in SqlServer too --...as long as there are no CASCADE operations.
Truncate table doesn't seem to be the solution, nor drop, as they all seem to trigger a Cascade delete in the Foreign Table.

So -- please correct me if I am wrong here -- it appears that the operations would be
along the lines of:
a) Remove the Foreign Key references
b) Copy the table structure, and make a new temp table, adding the column
c) Copy the data over
d) Add the FK relations, that used to be in the first table, to the new table
e) Delete the original
f) Done?

The questions are:
a) How does one alter a table to REMOVE the Foreign Key References part, if it has no 'name'.
b) Anyone know of a good clean way to get, and save these constraints to reapply them to the new table. Hopefully with some cross platform ADO.NET solution? GetSchema etc appears to me to be very dbms dependant?
c) ANY and all tips on things I might run into later that I have not mentioned, are also greatly appreciated.

Thanks!
Sky
