Replication-Distribution Task - Login Failed
Nov 9, 1999
I am now getting the following error:
Replication-Distribution: Task 'CAServer_Page_VAServer_InPage' failed. 3700[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server] Login Failed - User: Reason: Not associated with a trusted SQL Server connection.
I checked under the SQL Security Manager, View, SA Privilege and my sqlexecutivent login is set up as:
CAServersqlexecutivent sa
Thanks in advance for any tips you can give me with this. Both servers are set up in a workgroup. We are not using Domains.
Also, should my table already exist on the Subscribing Server?

I'm getting this, after upgrading from 2000 to 2005.Replication-Replication Distribution Subsystem: agent (null) failed. The subscription to publication '(null)' has expired or does notexist. The only suggestions I've seen are to dump all subscriptions. Sincewe have several dozen publications to several servers, is there adecent way to script it all out, if that's the only suggestion? Thanks in advance.

I have set up replication on two SQL Servers (6.5), SP5a, on NT 4.0 (SP3). The Distribution Task on the Publisher is failing with the following error:
08001[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][dbnmpntw]Specified SQL Server not found.
I am using standard security in a workgroup environment. I have my trusted connection setup and I am using named pipes. I had this process working on our test servers but when I tried to implement it into production I received the above message. Please give me some ideas or things to try. What source can I use to look up the 08001 error?
Thanks, Kevin

I will try the mixed security tomorrow. I have in the mean time discovered that I am not able to use the odbcping.exe utility successfully. It returns the same 08001 error message (Specified SQL Server not found). Does this means that the problem is within ODBC? What are somethings that I can try?
Thanks, Kevin

You need mixed security, also check password of the sql service account on nt.

Now, I am getting closer and receiving the following message in the Distribution Task (repl_subcriber is the owner, AutoStart is the Frequency):
"37000[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server] Login failed - User: Reason: Not Associated with a trusted SQL Server connection."
I have 'sqlexecutivent' and 'pswd' defined on the CA (Publisher) and VA (Subscriber) Servers. I have 'sqlexecutivent' defined in the NT Administrator group on both machines. I have trusted the NT Administrator group to SQL Server on both machines (xp_grantlogin 'administrator', 'admin'). I have trusted the NT 'sqlexecutivent' login to SQL Server on both machines (xp_grantlogin 'sqlexecutivent', 'admin'). I have logged-in to both NT machines using the 'sqlexecutivent' login and 'pswd'. I have started the MSSQLServer Service and SQLExecutive Service using 'sqlexecutivent' and 'pswd'. When I set up the Topology, Publication, and Subscription I was registerred in SEM as 'sa'. I do not know if this is needed, but in SQL Server I also created 'sqlexecutive' logins and 'sqlexecutive' database users on both machines.
Please tell me what I am missing. Do I need to do anything with the repl_subscriber and repl_publisher login ids? Do I need to configure a DSN? Do I need to check anything in the registry? Maybe I need to just start over again with a fresh start by uninstalling the Replication Topology, Publishing, etc. Maybe I should try Multi-Protocol.
Again, these are two NT 4.0, SP3 machines running SQL Server 6.5 SP5a. They are set up in the same Workgroup. I can connect to both machines in SEM and by Mapping a Network Drive. The default netlibrary is set to named pipes.
As part of my appreciation for your efforts, I will document this process and mail it to you once it is working.
Thanks, Kevin

I have been attempting to set up replication between two 6.5 servers in the same domain, and all I get is a login failed error on my replication task. Both servers use standard security and an admin login for the server and exec service, and I am using the default remote server setup as installed with replication. I'm sure it will be something simple, but I can't see it.
Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

hi,
so i have a new box and I'm trying to get my websites and SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition working on it, but the pages give me the following error when I try to load them:
"Cannot Open Database "XXXX" requested by login. The login failed. Login failed for user 'xxx'"
Everything seems exactly the same settings and user-wise from my old box to my new one, but nevertheless everything I've tried gives me the same error.
I've tried creating new users in SQL Server and giving them appropriate permissions to my database. I've even tried just using the built in 'sa' account. Nothing seems to change the error, except when I give it the incorrect password then it just says 'login failed'
This leads me to believe that i'm successfully logging into the SQL Server, but it doesn't want to give me access to the database I'm requesting access too. But "apparently" the account i'm using should have access to the database. If nothing else the 'sa' account should, but that didn't work either.
I'm stumped. Any ideas?

Hi all,
I hope someone who knows how to fix the following problem could shed some light:
I have set up a two-way transactional replication between two SQL 7.0 servers. The updates and inserts on server A is successfully replicated to server B. But when I tried to test if changes on server B is replicated onto server A, I got a 'login failed for user 'sa'' when I modified a user table. It sounds strange because I already logged in using 'sa' and all SQL servers use the same 'sa' login. I wonder if it is a Microsoft bug. The same problem happened on a pair of SQL 2000 Enterprise servers.
Thanks for any input.

So in a script task for one of my packages I have a connection manager to an dtsConfig OLE DB.
This is the code
Dim ConnectionString As String = Dts.Connections("db_stage").ConnectionString
Dim sqlConnection As SqlConnection = New SqlConnection(ConnectionString )
I get a login failed for
user...But if I hardcode the connectionString, including the password this works.
1) Why is it that the ConnectionString from the connection manager omits this password?
2) Since this is an OLE DB, is there anyway to set the Data Source Designer to omit the "Provider=ABCDED.1" section?
Thanks!

I'm "trying" to set up Replication. The Publishing/Distribution server is in one domain, and the subscribing server is in another. Both domains are fully trusted.
The synchronization step builds the .tmp file, but the repl_subscriber Distribution task bites the dust with an error message, "28000[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server] Login failed".
The setting on the distribution options dialog box is ODBC, SQL Server. I'm not using a special login/password. I've even tried putting a user name and password there, and it doesn't work. The ODBC connections test out fine on both servers. Any suggestions where I've gone wrong?
Thanks,
Layne

We have a SQL 2000 Active/Passive cluster running on Windows 2000. On one node, everything logs in fine (second node is powered off). I can use local authentication fine in OSQL (-E) and even see my connection in SQLEM current activity as [DomainUser] for the NT account which I am logged in as. Then I bring the second node online and initiate a failover. SQL Server starts but Cluster Admin cannot connect and starts throwing this Anonymous Logon error. I open a command prompt and try the same OSQL (-E) local login and sure enough it is also giving the Anonymous Logon connection user. I do not understand why the failover to a second node is causing the Trusted Connection Local authentication to switch to Anonymous instead of the [DomainUser] which I am using. Any help is appreciated. John.

Hey Microsoft: this affects development that will eventually sell a lot of seats on SharePoint Server 2007. If you guys and gals can't straighten out this mess, you can't expect custom solutions with custom web parts. So pay attention for your own good. Yes, SPS 2007 is what this is all about. I've created simpe web parts and deployed them, same VS 2005, but I need local development and debugging for more complex stuff. I'm really disappointed that you have no solution for this problem.
I've seen other posts on this, but the result seems to be the same: if you fix it, it's by accident, not by design.
1. I created a blank ASP.NET web site
2. I added a web part manager
3. I added a web part zone
I get the error described above. I have no idea why SQL Server settings are so screwed up.
I've tried all the stuff in the other posts - security settings, command line installation, etc. None of those worked.
The default template(s) don't copy anything into App_Data, nor create an empty folder. I don't know why that is. I have other web sites working just fine, but they use remote SQL databases, or local ones I created, and didn't need profile management (no forms authentication, no web parts, no web zones).
I've also started out with a local database, using SQL Authentication, later moving it to a remote server, and never had any problems. The SQL Server developer edition and Express seem to work just fine. I can also debug stored procs when the .mdf is in App_Data. So the problem isn't one of connectivity.
What would cause the default screw-up? This would seem to point from all directions to a problem with Visual Studio (2005)? The installation is defalt - perhaps some extras included (copy local), but nothing unusual. AJAX for ASP.net is installed, but not used in the above "default web site" trial. Likewise Syncfusion's tools, which work fine on other developer workstations at this same location, all of which are from the same image (purchased at the same time & imaged). That web parts work on other boxes, running all the same management tools (anti-virus, remote sys admin/sms etc.) makes none of those suspect.
I think Microsoft needs to have a clean problem solution and publish it. SP1 certainly doesn't fix it. What's worse is the stupid, lame error message. "I can't open the default database". Well, what did you try? What do you think the default is? What settings are you using? Why is there no debugging information other than the usual worthless trace information showing it's all deep within the ProviderBase and SqlClient namespace code? How is that supposed to be helpful?
If anyone has anything solid, not guesses, I'd like to know.

I seem to be having trouble with the distribution agent not doing what I want it to do. I have set up a few publications to run all the time but when I want to schedule a publication to run once a day this doesn't happen it defaults to run all the time.
Can the distrubition agent run some publications continusly and some publications scheduled?
Can anyone shed some light on this problem.

Please, i need some help with the replication i had configured.
I have two publications to the same subscriber, one with data filters and other not.
The one without data filters i have test manualy. But now after i have created the other one, the log reader says that '145 transactions with 347 commands' were delivered, but the distribution agents says that 'no replicated transactions are avaiable'.
I know that have many things to be replicated, but doesn´t work.
The Sql server agent is working on the distributor.
There is something that can be causing this error ?????
Please, if someone can help me i apologize
Thanks in regards

When setting up Replication in v. 6.5, a 'distribution' database is created, containing these tables:
MSjobs
MSjob_commands
MSjob_subscriptions
MSsubscriber_info
MSsubscriber_jobs
MSsubscriber_status
However, they cannot be accessed via the SQL Server Enterprise Manager interface like tables in other databases, at least I can't get to them. Is this a problem or a feature? I can query them to get their contents, but I'm wondering if there might be something wrong with my installation of SQL Server.
Any knowledge shared would be greatly appreciated.

Hi all replication experts...
I have created transactional replication on my servers (production server and backup server) and created pull subscription at the backup server. On my production server that also is a distributor and publisher there exist two agents, Snapshot agent and Log reader in the Publishers folder under replication Monitor.
There are also another agent with the backup server name and database name: BackServ:DBName having the type Pull and 'No replicated transactions are available' as Last Action. My question is: What is this? Must it be there?
Grateful for answers
Best,
/M

I've been using replication for a long while now but have never come across this error. It's a basic transactional replication from ServerA to ServerB, where ServerA is also the distributor. Everything had been running fine on it until yesterday, when this error started popping up and no further transactions could be delivered.
After some quick googling I was able to determine that the distribution agent account needed write access to C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL Server100Com. According to the MSFT article it's because the distribution agent is running under a non-default profile. I didn't change this. However, what I did change around the time that these errors started occurring was the server's Replication Max Test Size setting. It would be far too coincidental for this to not be the cause, but what I don't understand is *why* that would have changed it.
how do I change this? It is definitely not preferable to create temp files in this directory in our environment.

I seem to have an orphaned Distribution Agent. There is no associated Publication and the agent is sending errors. The errors would be legitimate if only I had an associated publication. I also do not have an associated Snapshot Agent.
How can I get rid of this bogus agent? I already deleted the associated job and rebooted SQL and SQLAgent but it still persists.
Any help would be appreciated.

I have been seeing this issue for several weeks now. The distribution agent will become idle even though there is activity occurring within the replicated database. If I manually start the distribution agent, it will begin retrieving the transactions. I thought that this might be due to inactivity but I have modified the inactivity threshold and I am not receiving an actual inactive agent warning. There are no warnings -- it simply sits there and does not resume sending transactions.
Any thoughts? This is a transactional replication with a distribution agent that is run at the subscriber.
Thanks,

Is there any % basis (SIZE) for Distribution DB according to the size of the database?
Is it feasible to keep seperate server for Distribution Server or keeping
Publisher and distributor on same same.
