Web Synchronization For Merge Replication.

Mar 5, 2007

Hi..

At first I want to explain my Problem:

We have an SQL Server 2005 Database in our company. We develope an Application for customers (with VC#.NET 2005) which uses SQL 2005 Express as local database. The Application tests some devices and creates a protocoll .

As you see, the local databases must always load the actual test infos from main database (server). And the server Database must load and combine protocoll rows from different local databases (or local database must send it).

How can I solve this problem?

I could use a remote connection over tcp/ip. but it would not be reliable. I read some Info about Web Synchronization for Merge Replication. Is it possible to replicate just selected tables (one-direction (from server to client)). And is it possible replicate different client tables and combine the rows of them in server table (one direction from client to server).

I hope I could explain it. Any idea? Thanks..

SQL 2012 :: Security For Web Synchronization (Merge Replication)?

Feb 8, 2015

I am trying out merge replication and using web synchronization.However, I am worried that I am missing something because the way it is set up, it strikes me as a bit too insecure.

According to the best practices and security articles on Technet, I am given to understand that:

The SQL Replication Listener (read: the application pool account that will be running the replisapi.dll) has to be the db_owner to both distribution and publisher and be on the PAL list. Windows authenication should be used. That means the merge agents wouldn't need to know the password for those logins.

The basic authenication can be used (with SSL) to authenicate into a Windows user account to then connect to the replisapi.dll.

Here's the rub - I assumed that all I needed was a basic no-rights user account to be then given the execute permission on the replisapi.dll & read permissions to kick off the process. When I browse to the replisapi.dll and authenicate using the no-rights user, I get the expected "SQL Server WebSync ISAPI" message. But when I then run the merge agent, it fails saying that login to the distribution failed for the no-rights user. If I use the application pool's account, then I am able to run merge agent successfully.

But that means I am now looking at storing the password to the application pool account on client. I might have had missed a crucial step to ensure that the logins to the distribution & publication databases are done using the application pool account, not the user authenticated via IIS basic authentication?

SQL Server CE Merge Replication Synchronization Question

Mar 9, 2006

I am running SQL Server 2000 and SQL Server CE on the handheld device. I have created the publication on the SQL Server.

I can subscribe to the publication successfully on the handheld and it creates the .sdf file just fine.

When I then attempt to synchronize, the process will run for a long time and eventually error out. (The database has a couple large data tables that are used for value lookups)

The error says the connection was broken.

Any suggestions on correcting this?

I am thinking of breaking the replication database into 2. One with the large lookup files and one with the updated tables. I still need to get the large database with the lookup tables onto the handheld though.

Any thoughts, advice or similar experience handling a situation as this would be appreciated.

thanks,

Dan

SQL 2012 :: Initializing Subscription With Web Synchronization (merge Replication)

May 9, 2015

I'm trying out a set up as following:

SQL Server 2008 standard as the publisher
SQL Server 2012 express as the subscriber

and I tend to use web synchronization; there is no domain trust.

After following the instructions at MSDN for configuring web synchronization, I have an error that I can't get past - after creating the initial snapshot on the publisher, I try to run replmerg.exe at the subscriber and I always get this error:

"The subscription to publication 'TestReplication' has expired or does not exist."

If I refresh the publisher's "Local Publications" and look within the "TestReplication", it does show that the subscriber is a known subscriber. Likewise, if I refresh subscriber's "Local Subscription", it has an entry for TestReplication publication.

I already verified that the user used by Replisapi.dll has the read permission to the snapshot folder, is a member of PAL, is db_owner of the publishing database and distribution database. I am using self-signed certificate for this test and I have already installed the certificate at the subscriber machine so that HTTPS is trusted. I can run diagnosis from subscriber so I know subscriber can reach and logs are being left at the publisher's IIS.

Data Synchronization Accross Multiple Servers Running Replication

Apr 19, 2007

Hello,

We have an environment with 7 servers that are running replication with one another and I'm wondering if there are any tools or experiences that any of you might have that may assist in the auditing of these servers. The data should be in synch accross the boards for all tables, but sometimes problems can arise such as replication not being set up properly, stored procedure's being out of synch, or data gliches etc.

In dealing with these issues we have an in-house written program which analises each table on each server and takes a snapshot and does column by column compare. We also have another program that will synch the data up (basically a delete/insert statement on the publisher). This process can take up to 3 weeks for our quarterly update of every table. I'm wondering if anybody has used any tools such as in SSIS or a third party tool and has done or is doing something similar to what we are doing now. If so, are there any tips you wouldn't mind sharing on how our process might be sped up?

Thanks,

Phil

Status Of Replication Through Transact-SQL

Aug 8, 2006

Hello,

I currently have a transactional replication between SQL Server 2000 and an Oracle database. Once a week on Monday mornings we have a process that drops replication, uploads data to the SQL Server database from Oracle, does some manipulation of the data and then recreates replication.

We came across the thought of what would happen if replication had erred out and there were still transactions within the distribution database to be replicated across. Then our job just came about and dropped the replication.

We are looking for a way to tell what the status is of replication through Transact-SQL. This way we can check the status and if it contained an error that we could abort the job, so as to not lose any transactions.

Does anyone have an idea of how to accomplish this?

Thanks

Checking Replication Job Status Programatically

Nov 7, 2001

Does anyone know how to check when a distribution job has finished
distributing a snapshot programatically?

I am writing an app that adds subscribers programatically. It first add the subscription (which creates a new snapshot) and after the snapshot is done, the distributor gets invoked automatically. Because I need to access the subscriber database after the publication is pushed I need to wait until
the distributor has finished its work.

Any help would be greatly apreciated! Thanks.

SQL 2000 Replication Status Question

Aug 29, 2006

Hello,

I'd like to be able to poll a SQL 2000 subscriber database to obtain the current replication status. For example, I'd like to know when the subscriber is sitting idle (e.g. "waiting for changes..."), when it is actively replicating (e.g. "applying script..."), or when it is in an error state (e.g. "The Merge Agent failed...").

I realize I can query the table MSmerge_history which contain a comments and error_id field that may be useful. However, there is no status field that I could easily code against.

Does anyone have any ideas?

How To Use TSQL To Monitor Replication Status

Dec 7, 2006

To monitor the status of replication in SQL 2000 we insert the resuts of sp_MShelp_replication_status into a temp table and review the status. In SQL 2005 this stored procedure has changed and now does it's own insert into execute command. Since insert execute commands can not be nested we must find another way to programically monitor replication using TSQL. We could call sys.sp_replmonitorhelppublisherhelper but we can't seem to find it in the distribution database. It must be hidden somehow. Any ideas?

Thanks,

Web Synchronization - Completed Synchronization Starts Again

Sep 6, 2006

Hello everybody,

There is some strange behaviour i've recently noticed while watching synchronization progress in Replication Monitor on SQL 2005 Server Standard with merge replication configured. The merge process seems to repeat several times.

This is the initial synchronizaion (reinitalization at the subsciber). Client is using Microsoft.SQLServer.Replication objects from .net framework assemblies.

The synchronization starts normally (status is "Running"). The last message of selected session box shows (among other messages): "Beginning evaluating partial replication filters" then "Finished evaluating partial replication filters" and finally "Merge completed after processing xxx changes... etc." after a few seconds. Status changes to "Completed" and then... the merge process starts again!! "Beginning evaluating partial replication filters" etc. And this repeats about 15-20 times.

And so whole process takes about 15 minutes instead about 45 seconds to complete initial synchronization. The number of changes is "Merge completed after processing ..." never change since the first such message.

Is this some bug in web synchronization or some invalid configuration setting? Why does merge process repeat itself so many times??

Please help, thanks in advance.

Data Conversion Failed. The Data Conversion For Column Value Returned Status Value 4 And Status Text Text Was Truncated Or On

Jan 7, 2008

Hi Experts,

I am extracting data from SQL Server 2005 to flat file destination. I am using SQL Command to specify the data selection query. One of my query uses Replicate function to derive a column value. When I execute this package it fails with the error "Data conversion failed. The data conversion for column "value" returned status value 4 and status text "Text was truncated or one or more characters had no match in the target code page".

The reason for the problem is that, it is taking the InputColumnWidth of the flat file destination as 8000 and I specified the OutputColumnWidth as 4.

If I change the OutputColumnWidth to 8000, it is working without any error but resulting in the column width of 8000.

I tried using DerivedColumn Transformation's Type cast and DataConversion Transformation but still I am getting the same error in the respective Transformation components.

Can anyone suggest how to solve this issue.

Web Synchronization

Feb 19, 2007

Hello guys!
I went through the bunch of documentation pages about configuring the one for providing web subscriptions.
The most usefull for me were:

Security Architecture for Web Synchronization
How to: Configure an IIS Server for Web Synchronization (SQL Management Studio)
How to: Configure a Subscription to Use Web Synchronization
Topologies for Web Synchronization
Securing the Publisher
Subscribing to Publications
Mssubscription_properties (Transact-SQL)
How to: Configure a Subscription to Use Web Synchronization (Replication Transact-SQL)
sp_addmergepullsubscription (Transact-SQL)
Web Synchronization for Merge Replication
 But I still have questions about it. If you could help me with small notes about subscribing to web based merge publication I would really appreciate that!

I believe, I just need a bit of clarification. The target setting is simple as it is: a client should connect to the our hosting server via HTTPS and update his pull subscription on demand by running .NET application.
 Avoiding the server part, are the following steps correct and enough to accomplish what I need?
1. To create subscription, should I use the script:-- This script uses sqlcmd scripting variables. They are in the form-- $(MyVariable). For information about how to use scripting variables  -- on the command line and in SQL Server Management Studio, see the -- "Executing Replication Scripts" section in the topic-- "Programming Replication Using System Stored Procedures". -- Publication must support anonymous Subscribers.-- Execute this batch at the Subscriber.DECLARE @publication AS sysname;DECLARE @publisher AS sysname;DECLARE @publicationDB AS sysname;DECLARE @websyncurl AS sysname;DECLARE @security_mode AS int;DECLARE @login AS sysname;DECLARE @password AS nvarchar(512);SET @publication = N'AdvWorksSalesOrdersMergeWebSync';SET @publisher = $(PubServer);SET @publicationDB = N'AdventureWorks';SET @websyncurl = 'https://' + $(WebServer) + '/WebSync';SET @security_mode = 0; -- Basic Authentication for IISSET @login = $(Login);SET @password = $(Password); -- At the subscription database, create a pull subscription -- to a merge publication.USE [AdventureWorksReplica]EXEC sp_addmergepullsubscription         @publisher = @publisher,         @publication = @publication,         @publisher_db = @publicationDB,        @subscriber_type = N'anonymous'; -- Add an agent job to synchronize the pull subscription. EXEC sp_addmergepullsubscription_agent         @publisher = @publisher,         @publisher_db = @publicationDB,         @publication = @publication,         @distributor = @publisher,         @job_login = @login,         @job_password = @password,        @use_web_sync = 1,        @internet_security_mode = @security_mode,        @internet_url = @websyncurl,        @internet_login = @login,        @internet_password = @password;GO

What is  @job_login parameter here? As I understand, I will not run SQL Agent job as our client uses MS SQL Server  2005 Express. And I do not want to run it as we will provide a client with .NET application for performing synchrinization on demand
Parameter @publisher means full SQL Server instance name? For example, MYMACHINEMSSQLSERVER?
What user will be used to connect to the distributor and to the Publisher? Will it be @internet_login?
Do I need running sp_addmergepullsubscription_agent if I€™m going to use the following .NET application code to synchronize over the Internet?

2. To perform synchronization with our hosting servers, should a client use the following code?
            // Define the server, publication, and database names.
            string subscriberName = instanceName;
            string publisherName = instanceName;
            string publicationName = "AdvWorksSalesOrdersMerge";
            string subscriptionDbName = "AdventureWorksReplica";
            string publicationDbName = "AdventureWorks";
            string hostname = "adventure-works\garrett1";
            string webSyncUrl = "https://" + instanceName + "/SalesOrders/replisapi.dll";

            // Create a connection to the Subscriber.
            ServerConnection conn = new ServerConnection(subscriberName);

            MergePullSubscription subscription;
            MergeSynchronizationAgent agent;

            try
            {
                // Connect to the Subscriber.
                conn.Connect();

                // Define the pull subscription.
                subscription = new MergePullSubscription();
                subscription.ConnectionContext = conn;
                subscription.DatabaseName = subscriptionDbName;
                subscription.PublisherName = publisherName;
                subscription.PublicationDBName = publicationDbName;
                subscription.PublicationName = publicationName;

                // If the pull subscription exists, then start the synchronization.
                if (subscription.LoadProperties())
                {
                    // Get the agent for the subscription.
                    agent = subscription.SynchronizationAgent;

                    // Check that we have enough metadata to start the agent.
                    if (agent.PublisherSecurityMode == null)
                    {
                        // Set the required properties that could not be returned
                        // from the MSsubscription_properties table.
                        agent.PublisherSecurityMode = SecurityMode.Integrated;
                        agent.DistributorSecurityMode = SecurityMode.Integrated;
                        agent.HostName = hostname;

                        // Set optional Web synchronization properties.
                        agent.UseWebSynchronization = true;
                        agent.InternetUrl = webSyncUrl;
                        agent.InternetSecurityMode = SecurityMode.Standard;
                        agent.InternetLogin = winLogin;
                        agent.InternetPassword = winPassword;
                    }
                    // Enable agent output to the console.
                    agent.OutputVerboseLevel = 1;
                    agent.Output = "";

                    // Synchronously start the Merge Agent for the subscription.
                    agent.Synchronize();
                }
                else
                {
                    // Do something here if the pull subscription does not exist.
                    throw new ApplicationException(String.Format(
                        "A subscription to '{0}' does not exist on {1}",
                        publicationName, subscriberName));
                }
            }
            catch (Exception ex)
            {
                // Implement appropriate error handling here.
                throw new ApplicationException("The subscription could not be " +
                    "synchronized. Verify that the subscription has " +
                    "been defined correctly.", ex);
            }
            finally
            {
                conn.Disconnect();
            }

What does HostName parameter use for? What is that host? Subscriber€™s machine name instance name? Or Publisher€™s? Or Distributor€™s?
Why parameters PublisherSecurityMode and DistributorSecurityMode have value SecurityMode.Integrated? How it is used in the replication model for web synchronization? As I understood from the documentation, client (Merge Agent) should connect to the Subscriber, get the changes, connect to hosting server via HTTPS and perform transactions through the SQL Server Replication Listener, thus the internet login to the IIS should be used to perform all the operations on hosting server side? The same internet login will be used to get snapshot from UNC share?
If I€™ve chosen to use FTP to provide with snapshots, should I then provide ftp parameters to sp_addmergepullsubscription_agent stored procedure or they will be used automatically by ISAPI filters on hosting server?
Thank you.

Synchronization

Mar 24, 2006

Hello,

I'm having to build a smart client application that works with an offline sql express database on the client. And works with several types of databases - that may be configured to work as a central server. The list includes the sql server family including 2000, 2005 and express and also IBM DB2.

I have to address some rather complex merge replication scenarios. By Merge I mean the ability to deal with handling and synchronization of bi-directional changes. More specifically changes to data may be made to any database in the system. either local or central.

I'm afraid, I cannot use sql replication in a heterogenous mode for several reasons. Some being - the database is being auto attached on the client, the application is expected to live up to the 'low impact' install ideology and should not need any major configuration etc.....

Are there any recomended approaches/Ideas one may use to acheive replication. Any links/information/ideas will be great.

Thanks,

Avinash

Synchronization With RDA

Jan 31, 2008

Hi!

I'm developing a Windows Mobile solution (Pocket PC Win 5-6). I have Sql Server CE on the device and I use RDA (Remote Data Access) to pull the tables to the Sql Server CE. I use RdaTrackOption.TrackingOffWithIndexes so I can Alter the table design. Then I use the function SubmitSql to push back my changes. On the server I have a table for example Customers, it has a column called CustomerId with identity(1,1). Let's say the highest Id is 100 and the lowest is 50, when I add a record in the Sql Server CE it gets CustomerId = 1 then next one 2 etc which means identity is working but does not continue after 100. I don't need to use the CustomerId when I push my data back because I have sql syntax taking care of @@IDENTITY when inserting new records. Anyone who knows why it begins on 1 and not 101?
