Replication :: Populating Local Database Daily With Data From Linked Servers?

Jul 29, 2015

I have multiple web databases for storefront orders as linked servers on SQL Server 2008 R2. I need to organize the data for these orders into a structure that can be imported into my ERP application db frequently either on demand or periodically during the day. We are essentially trying to make the manual order entry process automated. My thought was to get the data into views that resemble the schema of the order table in my application db and then schedule a stored procedure with sql jobs or a load routine from within the ERP application that would insert data from the view into the order table.

SQL 2005 Log-shipping/replication Linked Servers

Aug 9, 2007

I am having trouble finding any documentation on how linked servers are set-up under SQL 2005 for log-shipping and replication. Under SQL 2000, the only linked servers "visible" were ones that were user-defined. Under SQL 2005, it seems when you set-up log-shipping or replication, you get these new linked servers which are automatically defined. I would like to understand them and in particular, how security is maintained. We recently had a production issue where after some problem with a server which resulted in having to restart SQL Server, and shrink msdb, log-shipping started to fail authentication when trying to run alert jobs. Only after rebooting the server, and also the log-ship target server, and waiting 9 hours, did the authentication correct itself. I would like to know how it resolved itself and what took so long?

Populating Data From One SQL Database To Another

Jul 13, 2007

I have a project that entails the following:

There are two separate SQL Server databases involved that reside on two different servers. One of the depts within our building wants to have building permit data imported from Permit Database on Server "A" to their own database on Server "B".

I dont think this will be an overly complicated process. There are only a few fields they want populated (5 or 6 tops). This will have to be ran every
weeknight via some sort of scheduled task in Windows or SQL.

I was just interested in seeing if anyone has had prior experience working on data transfer like this. I would like to know what would be the best and most efficient way to approach this.

Thanks in advance.

Local SQL Server Instances Not Showing Up On Local Servers Tab Of Management Studio Logon Screen

Oct 2, 2007

We have a 64-bit VM server running SQL Server 2005. The SQL Server on this particular VM server has 6 local instances installed. On the Management Studio logon screen I can type the full name of the local instance and connect to it, however if I press the drop down in the Server name field, choose Browse and select the Local Servers tab there is nothing listed under Database Engines.

Any idea why the 6 local instances don't show up under Database Engines? This is preventing me from installing a vendor application because their installer looks for local SQL Server instances on this server, but if SQL Server won't even show the local instances then the installer doesn't see them either.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Craig

Transfer Data Between Linked Servers

Nov 12, 2004

Hello to all,

my problem is about the slow execution of a query.

I have two database located in two different servers. The servers are linked with the linked server connection made with the enterprice manager.

The databases structure is the same and I copy some data from a database to the other with the following query:

INSERT INTO DATASERVER.RESULTS.dbo.Tab_Tests SELECT * FROM LINESERVER.WIP.dbo.Tab_Tests WHERE ID_Result = '{76271FC1-9470-4EF7-A403-000CF75C2215}' OR ID_Result = '{08C8EEB9-CD22-4CF9-8269-8C1CC58C752B}' OR ID_Result = '{B7B7EED1-36E4-48FA-9636-ABBE62AAE04D}' OR ID_Result = '{8F7BA69E-D2CE-4EB2-BBC4-AFFA165CE0CE}' OR ID_Result = '{273CB805-945F-4EFA-AE20-BC4E0898A19F}'

Everything works till the database grows up more than 400 MB.

Also if I select one result, that consist of some records, the query is very slow and the CPU is working over the 75 %.

I ask you if my working way is corret or if you have some solution or some explanation for me.

Thank you

Getting Meta-data For Linked Servers

Oct 25, 2006

My customer has a .NET application that reads meta data from SQL Server, Oracle, DB2, and several propritary databases. Because each DBMS stores the meta data using various techniques, they have written custom code for each DBMS. They are working on a generic ODBC/OLEDB suppport, but in the interim I was trying to use SQL Server to link to an Access database. The Access linked server works fine for queries in Query Analyzer, but I would like to be able to programatically read the metadata for an Access DB (tables, columns, types, etc) via the linked server. SQL Server's usual mechanism for storing meta-data in the Master database aparently is not used for Linked Servers.

Does SQL Server expose Linked Server meta data?
How would one retrieve this meta data if it is exposed?

Thanks,

Ben

I have a table where I want to populate it with data (certain fields) from another table. But I only want to populate the table if there is data in a certain field in the table I wish to get the data from.

How exactly would I do this test? Would an I have to perform an IF statement to test if the field contains a value first?

Update Data On SQL2005 Linked Servers To DB2

Oct 25, 2007

Hi all.

I need your help.

I create a linked server on SQL 2005 server using IBMDA400 as provider.

I create a VBscript to update some data on DB2, and issue begin trans and commit trans. Kindly refer to below code.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Set oKCDat = CreateObject("KCDAT.kcdatapi")
Set objConnection = oKCDat.OpenConnection_SQL(strDataSource,strDB, strUserID, strPassword)

Set rs = CreateObject("ADODB.Recordset")

strName = "TEST1"

strTemp1 = "2"
strTemp2 = "3"
intTemp1 = 199

strSQLStatement = "SELECT * FROM QS36F.TEST WHERE PRACNM = ''" & strName & "''"
strUpdSQL = "TEST1 = '" & strTemp1 & "', TEST2 = '" & strTemp2 & "', TEST3 = " & intTemp1

strSQL = "UPDATE OPENQUERY(TESTDB2," & "'" & strSQLStatement & "')" & " SET " & strUpdSQL & ";"

objConnection.BeginTrans

objConnection.Execute(strSQL)

objConnection.CommitTrans

objConnection.Close

Set rs = Nothing
Set oKCDat = Nothing
Set objConnection = Nothing

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

When i run above script, it prompt me an error message;
"Microsoft OLE DB Provider for SQL Server
The requested operation could not be performed because OLE DB provider "IBMDA400" for linked server "TESTDB2" does not support the required transaction interface."

If i run it without "begintrans" and "committrans", it update the data successfully.

Does anyone know about it?

Highly appreciated for above matters.

How To Create Linked Servers For Multi Data Source

I've read through a ton of posts and it looks like there is no way to join the data using Datasets, that you need to do something called Linked Servers.
but what I couldn't find is where do I go to create a Linked Server and how. I'm new to SS, so I need help and details.

SQL Server Replication From Non-clustered Database Servers

Jun 22, 2006

Hello,Being a bit of a SQL Server novice, need some advice with the followingsituation.Server A and Server B have SQLServer 2000 based databases. The vendorof the application/system has implemented their own replication processto ensure the 2 databases are in sync. However, there is no clusteringwith virtual IP addresses implemented. So to an external client/db, itis 2 identical databases with the same name on 2 distinct servers.We need to develop an application that will reside on a networkedserver C and with SQLServer 2000 as well. While most of the tables inthis database are self contained, around 10 tables will have to bemirror copies of the same tables from either Server A or Server B.Question, how do we implement subscription based replication on top ofa redundant database, when no clustering is implemented? So, inessence, when Server A is alive, the database on Server C willperiodically (or on change) replicate the 10 tables from Server A. WhenServer A is not alive, it needs to do same from server B. (When bothserver A and B are alive, it is acceptable to get data from either,since they are synchronized internally).Any alternate suggestions on achieving this functionality are welcometoo. If SQL Server 2005 has some capabilities that may address thisproblem, that is a consideration as well.Thanks

Data Synchronization Accross Multiple Servers Running Replication

Apr 19, 2007

Hello,

We have an environment with 7 servers that are running replication with one another and I'm wondering if there are any tools or experiences that any of you might have that may assist in the auditing of these servers. The data should be in synch accross the boards for all tables, but sometimes problems can arise such as replication not being set up properly, stored procedure's being out of synch, or data gliches etc.

In dealing with these issues we have an in-house written program which analises each table on each server and takes a snapshot and does column by column compare. We also have another program that will synch the data up (basically a delete/insert statement on the publisher). This process can take up to 3 weeks for our quarterly update of every table. I'm wondering if anybody has used any tools such as in SSIS or a third party tool and has done or is doing something similar to what we are doing now. If so, are there any tips you wouldn't mind sharing on how our process might be sped up?

Thanks,

Phil

Problem Accessing My Local A: Verses The SQL Servers A: Drive

Apr 26, 2006

I am having a problem accessing my local A: drive, using the bulk insert command. The actual sql server pc thinks I am accessing its sql server's A: and not my local a: drive. I am trying to read in a simple CSV delimited ascii file into a sql table. Wow what a nightmare just to read a simple ascii file into a table. Unfortunatley I am writing a program in VB.net for an operator to import ascii data from floppy diskettes.

I am using this command below: The command works fine but I have to go to the actual server and put the floppy disk in over there. I want the operator to be able to use there own A: or any location drive for that matter. Sql server over the network is not allowing us to access any local drive to import this data. I get an error 21 because the sql server does not have the floppy in its drive. It seems like some kind of security issue, but I am not sure. Any information would be most appreciated in this matter. Thanks in advance.

BULK INSERT Master.dbo.imVBMbAddress

Linked Servers In DTS...

Hi,

I'm using SQL Server 7.0 SP1.

I have a DTS package that requires me to link 2 servers

want to Transform. My query runs fine in QA. I copy and
paste it into the SQL Query window of the transformation.
I click Preview and all that happens is a quick flicker of
the DTS window. When I go to Transformations, there are
no source columns.

Here is a copy of my code that I'm trying to use:

Is there an issue with Linked Servers and DTS?
