Report Server Reports Authorization
Nov 28, 2007
I am in the planning phase of building a Form Authenication Report Server project. The database contains the Role information for each report and for each user. The objective is to authenicate and authorize user so that only the authorized reports are available for the current user to view.
Base on my research these are my plans.
1. Deploy Reports onto the Report Server
2. Put Reports in folders to group different types of report (I am not sure is it possible to only the display authorized reports for the current user)
3. Design the custom Security extension to authenicate and authorize using the database
1. Is it possible to only display authorized reports for the current user to view by doing custom security extension?

Hi -
I got through the installation hoops for SQLEXPRESS Reporting Services in Vista and set up the default configurations in Report Services Configuration. I can explore the default directory for "Reports" in IIS7, but I can't browse in IE. I get the "The report server is not responding. verify that the report server..." message in the browser. This is after I migrated the app per the initial http 500 error using the preferred method - %systemroot%system32inetservAPPCMD.exe migrate config "Default Web Site/Reports".
I'm running Vista Ultimate, VS2005, SQLEXPRESS SP2. I've tried running IE as admin and also I've disabled UAC from gpedit.msc - ...Windows SettingsSecurity SettingsLocal PolicySecurity Options and unchecking UAC.
Thanks,
Mike

I have a development server setup with Report Builder that our users have been testing out. They have a number of reports that they have created on this dev server.
We now have our live environment all setup and I'd like to move their Report Builder reports to the new server for them so they don't have to recreate them.
Is this possible? If so, how?
Thanks.

Hi all,
We have many domain users who develop/deploy reports using VS2003 to our remote server at https://server/reportserver with no problems at all.
A single workstation on the domain that been used to develop reports cannot deploy though. The message looks fairly simple to diagnose "no report server was found at https://server/reportserver". I have checked dns and the servername resolves no problem. I have manaully edited and added the server to the hosts file also. I have updated and service packed all VS elements (VS2003 7.1.6030).
The server is contactable in all ways on this workstation, all ip/dns settings are the same as other domain workstations.
Can anyone point me in the direction of log files to look at, or if i am missing any basic options in VS. I have checked all deployment settings from other workstations.
Many Thanks!
Alex

I have a vb 6 program that has been running for several years against a 6.5 db. I convert the db to 2000, and now when I repoint the software to the 2000 db, I get "Invalid Authorization Specification" when I try to open the connection. The connection string is:Dim conn As ADODB.ConnectionSet conn = New ADODB.Connectionconn.Open "Provider=SQLOLEDB" & _ ";Data Source=" & sServer & _ ";Initial Catalog=" & sDB & _ ";User Id=" & goProcess.UserID & _ ";Password=" & goProcess.Password & ";"All of the variables are filled out correctly, when I go against a 6.5 it works, Sql Server 2000 doesn't.

Hello
I generate a report (.RDL) using Business Intelligence studio and then deploy it.
This deploys sucessfully (see below)
------ Deploy started: Project: Report Project5, Configuration: Debug ------
Deploying to http://localhost/ReportServer$SQLExpress
Deploying report '/Report Project5/Report1'.
Deploy complete -- 0 errors, 0 warnings
========== Build: 1 succeeded or up-to-date, 0 failed, 0 skipped ==========
========== Deploy: 1 succeeded, 0 failed, 0 skipped ==========
When i try to view in IE browser I am required to enter credentials. I enter Admin user and password but this does not work - not authorized to view page.
Looked in IIS -> ReportServer$SQLExpress and would have expected to see report here or in Pages folder. It is not there!
Any help appreciated

Hello SQL Server Experts, Data Analysts, and Report Writers et al:
re: Reporting Options with SQL Server
I wanted to propose an offshoot to the pryor thread:
Would anyone take a stab at comparing Access Reports, Crystal Reports,
Cognos or other options to all the Reporting Services and its components offered as part ofSQL Server, especially as to extracting data from SQL Server into a report format?
I guess this is a far as capabilites, ease of use, limitations, and especially formatting
or presentation of the end report product?
Thank you to all, and I hope this is a beneficial discussion to others.

Here is one scenario. There is Department X which has subdepartments A,B,C,D. A has 5 members and B has some 7 products, C 5 members and D has some 12 members. My problem is I need create a Report model where is if we select X
all the list of subdepartments and their members should be displayed. I.e if we select X then
A

5
B

C and so on..........every thing should be displayed that are under department, i.e subdepartments under that department and the members under each subdepartment of that Department.
The problem here is all those departments and subdepartments are in same table which has columns like,
"DeptId" and "Dept Reporting to" and "EmplID.
When we select "Dept Reporting to" = X, we need to get the result as I specified above
Can anyone please help me out to create a Report Model to generate ad hoc reports

i know the basics about how to manipulate SQL server database, i mean the code itself, but there are few other things which i don't understand.
first, databases which i have created by my own, i can use only when
i have the website itself open (i get an icon at the taskbar)
but database such as 'master' which came with the sqlserver, i can acess always even without running the page with visual studio first. i have no idea why.
also, when i try to connect my website using my ip, i can only do it with
the master database.. those i created by my own i can only connect when i enter the URL page as localhost.
I don't understand what's USER INSTANCE for and how do i really set
a database username and password
can someone exaplin a little? thanks, because i am very confused .

When runing a report in Report Manager I can click on an item and SQL Server provides the logic to drill down into the underlying tables. I can find no button to go back. The only way I've found to go back is to click a different tab at the top of the screen (History or something) then click View again and you get the original report. In designer there's a back button. Is there not such a button when running a saved report????
Thanks.

When we move reports from one folder to another in Report Manager we have to delete the report in the destination folder first before moving it over if a version is already there. If not we get the error that an item with that name already exists. Is there a way around this? Is there a setting which will allow over-write of a report?

I was curious to know if there is a way to create a report that will show when the last time all reports on our server were run. We have a lot of reports on our server made by multiple people that may or may not be in use anymore and we're trying to clean this up a bit. I am currently running SQL Server 2000. I realize there is a history that each report has and I'm wondering if it's possible to pull from that if it is stored somewhere that is accessible. Any help or direction would be much appreciated as I am not even sure where to start.....

Hi,
I have a data table called STOCKPE which holds stock valuation information at the close of business each day. I wish to use reporting services to extract the data in this table on a daily basis and keep a daily history on the report server. I know I can do this - this isn't my problem.
When I have the history of this table on the report server, can the data that the reports on the report server hold be used as a datasource for another report?
I'm no expert in reporting services, so if this is possible, or if there's a better way of doing it, please use small words and short sentences. No offence intended to all the very well educated SQLRS wizards out there, it's just that I'm not one of them and your answer will be lost on me if you use a lot of abreviations and acronyms.
Thanks,
Chris

As per my knowledge, a report model contains datasources, datasource views, report models itself and doesn't allow to transfer reports. Please , let me know if my understanding is correct?

Hi!
We have a "folder hiriarchy" in reporting services with permission for different users to only create reports in their own folder. However, it would be nice if they (in report builder) could open eachothers reports, modify them and then save them in theri own folder. In this case, if they find a useful report that someone else has created, they could just make their own small modifications and save it in their own folder.
The problem is that I cant't seem to find a securitysetting that allow this. Either they can create/modify/delete the reports in a "folder" or they can't even open them in report builder...
Is there a solution to my problem?
regards Andreas

Hello -
I know that you can build a Report Designer report and add URL navigation from a field. I am trying to figure out how to do this with report BUILDER. I haven't been able to do it using the UI and editing the RDL directly to match what I see in a similar report Designer report is being ignored (if I did it right).
I can put the URL into the DSV & Model as a field/attribute, but displaying the a field with a URL in it doesn't make it "clickable".
Does anyone have a trick for this? Or know that there is definately no way to do it?
Thanks in advance,
Toni Fielder

Hello,

So, when users access the aplication through the web it runs ok until display the error message "Invalid authorization specification" or, sometimes, another message about failure to inform ODBC DSN, although I dont use ODBC.
When the error occurs, the user press F5 in the browser and the operation goes ok. It's an intermitent and curious error.
Can somebody help me?

When I read the ProdTable and User ID = User1 then selected records should be:

i want to implement authorization with windows authentication and don'thave the slightest clue of how to do this implementation. the basicwindows authentication for this .NET application is already setup. myproblem lies within my inability to manipulate the username captured inthe authentication process and my knowledge of how IIS is involved.specifically, i have the following questions:1) what object(s) can be used so that the user's username can bemanipulated for the authorization process?2) in order to apply roles, do the users need to be placed in groups inIIS? if so, how does this work?3) is all the code that the application uses for roles in web.config?or does global.asax play a role in this matter?4) does the web.config file know to communicate with IIS because theauthorization type is set to windows?5) once authorization is in place, can a section of an .aspx file bevisible to a group or can only entire files be secured for a group?as you can see, i'm trying to figure out the relationship betweenauthorization and windows authentication so any help would beappreciated.thanks, johne: Join Bytes!

Hi,
We are testing our product on Windows Vista with SQL Server 2005 SP2 and are encountering an "invalid authorization specification". We make the connection through a Windows service using a standard ADO connection. I have tried changing the provider in the connection string to SQLNCLI without any success. The application is written in Delphi 5 and has worked on previous versions of Windows running SQL Server 2005.
Thanks.
