Mar 11, 2008
I'm trying to backup the Encryption Key for the Reporting Services. After I insert the password / location key file and click Ok, I get the following error:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ReportServicesConfigUI.WMIProvider.WMIProviderException: An unknown error has occurred in the WMI Provider. Error Code 80070A91
---> System.Runtime.InteropServices.COMException (0x80070A91): Password doesn't meet the requirements of the filter dll's

at ReportServicesConfigUI.WMIProvider.RSReportServerAdmin.BackupEncryptionKey(Byte[]& encryptedBytes, String password)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I have tried with diferents passwords but none of them is ok. I don't have any rule on local windows password policy!
Any suggestions?
Thanks!

Hello Everyone
As part of UK compliance, we are going to start use an encrytption package (GNUPG), which will be running on a different Server to Reporting Services. A program has been written in C#, to handle requests (from mainframe and PC applications) to encrypt/decrypt credit card details. The encrypted card details are held in an NCR Teradata data warehouse, which Reporting Services can access. The encryption can be called using a http://server/folder/program?DATA=
In Reporting Services, a Data Source connection will be made, using an OLE DB .NET connection to the Teradata machine. SQL code will be included, which will link tables and retrieving the required fields for use in the report. I want to call the encryption program to decrypt the card number, so the actual card number can be printed in the body of the report.
There will probably be a requirement to write some parameter selection SQL as well, so a card nmuber can be entered as a report parameter field, which the SQL will have to either encrypt first, then process the SQL statement down the tables.
Has anybody use this technique before?
Thanks
Graham N.

Hi,
I am thinking of using SQL and VB express for a project. Reading different versions information lead me to the following understanding on bakups and report services. Please comfirm my understanding or correct me if I am wrong. Any suggestion is always welcome.
1. SQL express does not include Agent Job Service so I cannot schedule a backup job or daily report to run automatically at a specific time. Is there a work around on this?
2. If I install the SQL express with the Advance Services edition, I still have to install the express tool kit to get the business intelligence developer studio in order to generate the reports. Do I have to install both on the same machine (the server) or the advance edition on the server and the tool kit on the client machine?
Thanks,
Bernie

Any simple summary of the new backup encryption? I've found a small handful of articles, but apparently I have some sort of mental block where keys and certs are involved.I'm trying to determine if this is a viable replacement (for our purposes) for SQL Backup, which we started using primarily for the compression and encryption. We don't have issues with SQL Backup, I'd rather not install additional utilities for native functionality.
What I can't seem to understand is how one goes about restoring an encrypted backup onto another server. When one restores the master key onto the destination server, what happens to the existing key on that server?
Right now, we have backups off-site in third-party storage, and all we need to restore is the .sqb and the password (and the SQB converter). With native encryption, we need the .bak, the keys, the cert, and the password?

Hello!
I started Configure Report Server (2005) and have executed backup of the encryption key.
Problem occurred on restore of the encryption key as following error (I have provided correct backup snk):
ReportServicesConfigUI.WMIProvider.WMIProviderException: The version of the report server database is either in a format that is not valid, or it cannot be read. The found version is 'C.0.8.39'. The expected version is 'C.0.8.40'. To continue, update the version of the report server database and verify access rights. (rsInvalidReportServerDatabase)
at ReportServicesConfigUI.WMIProvider.RSReportServerAdmin.ThrowOnError(ManagementBaseObject mo)
at ReportServicesConfigUI.WMIProvider.RSReportServerAdmin.RestoreEncryptionKey(Byte[] encryptedBytes, String password)
ReportingServer sites stop working with similar error (browsing by IE):
The found version is 'C.0.8.39'. The expected version is 'C.0.8.40'. To continue, update the version of the report server database and verify access rights. (rsInvalidReportServerDatabase)
ReportingServer services are all locked by this.
Can you please tell how to resolve this problem?
Thank you very much!

I just installed Reporting Services (2005) in a "distributed installation" mode. That is, I have sql server 2005 on a separate server. I installed the Report Server on its own server where I already had IIS running.
That all seemed to go well and I didn't get any errors or anything. After the install process was done, I ran the RS Configuration Manager tool. Since "Install but do not configure" option was automatically selected for me, I started working through all the pages from top to bottom. Again everything worked, and I have green checkboxes next to all of the nodes in the left except...
When I get to the Encryption Keys page, it has a blue exclamation icon next to its icon in the left pane. On the page itself, the Backup and Change buttons are disabled, greyed out.
And, the next item down, Initialization, is shown with a greyed out "x" icon. It's not red, but greyed out.
So, I'm not sure what this all means, but I'm guess it means that I don't have RS set up yet...! Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello all - I have an installation of SQL Server 2K5 Express with Reporting Services on an XP Pro SP2 PC. It has been running for about 6 months now. Within the 1st month, I had to restore the Encryption Key (the Report Manager failed to function properly).
All had been well until last week, when I had to restore the encryption key (for the same reason). After restoring the encryption key, the Report Manager immediately started to work again.
It happened again today, so I had to once again restore the encryption key. Can anyone offer any ideas as to why/how this would happen?
Thanks!

Hi,
I have an encrypted SQL Server 2005 database. Data is encrypted and decrypted using the encryptbykey and decryptbykey statements. I would like to allow the end user to be able to build adhoc reports using the Report Builder. I can't figure out how to decrypt the fields as they are dragged onto the report layout. Does anyone have any insight on how to accomplish this, or is it even possible?
Thanks,
Mark

Hi,
I need to have some information in my database encrypted, even protected from the DBA. To do this
I open a symmetric key protected by a user-provided password at the begin of the session
and then use the encryptbykey/decryptbykey statements in the following SQL
(the decryptbykey stuff wrapped in a view).
Now, I also want to use reporting services for this database and am investigating ways how to do that.
I suppose (hope) that I can use the ReportViewer control in my application,
opening the key at the beginning of the session. However, the end-user also needs to be able
to create ad-hoc reports using Report Builder, and it isn't clear to me how I can
decrypt data using the key in this context. Any thoughts on how to approach this problem?
Thanks in advance,
Otmar

I have created two user defined functions for encryption and decryption using passphrase mechanism. When I call encryption function, each time I am getting the different values for the same input. While I searching a particular value, it takes long time to retrieve due to calling decryption function for each row.
best way to encrypt and decrypt using user defined functions.Below is the query which is taking long time.
SELECT ID FROM table WITH (NOLOCK)
WHERE dbo.DecodeFunction(column) = 'value'
When I try to use symetric or asymetric encryption, I am not able to put "OPEN SYMETRIC KEY" code in a function. So, I am using PassPhrase mechanism.

I did tried the encryption on server "A" for database "AdventureWorks2012". Then I tried to restore to server "B". There was the certificate issue, and I thought "of course : it's encrypted ! Let's deactivate it". So here I go "ALTER DATABASE AdventureWorks2012 SET ENCYRPTION OFF".I look at sys.databases : not encrypted.I backup using no encryption, I verify using msdb.dbo.backupset : not encrypted.
I move my backup to my other server where encryption was never configured (so no certificate, nothing...), and I have the error :

I have written a report visual studio. The report has 10 multi-value parameters that pull data from their individual data sets within the reports. When running the report from within Visual Studio it renders fine. There are no errors reported, only a warning related to a pathname I have use to retrieve image data and display on the report.Deployment of the report is error free.When I view the report I briefly get the "Loading" splash window, but then nothing. None of the headers or static text is displayed. The results window is blank.
The report defaults all the parameter values. In trying to debug the issue I have found by reducing the number of parameter values the report will render. Once I have all the values added, the report does nothing.Below is the query being used for the report. The where clause in the query shows the parameters being used and the syntax.We are running on Windows Server 2008 R2 and SQL Server 2008 R2.

We are about to implement SSRS reports (SQL Server 2012), and have found one issue we don't like. The report looks great when we open it in pdf format. However, when we open it in Excel format, we want it to be the raw data, not look like the pdf report. I tried the simpl headers, and that removed the page header/footer. However, the report format was still in play.In other words, we would like the report when opened in Excel, to look just like it does when we open it as a CSV.I have tried to modify the config file a couple of times. Here is my latest attempt:
Extension Name="CSV" Type="Microsoft.ReportingServices.Rendering.DataRenderer.CsvReport,Microsoft.ReportingServices.DataRendering">
<OverrideNames>
<Name Language="en-US">CSV (comma delimited)</Name>
</OverrideNames>
</Extension>
<Extension Name="CSV" Type="Microsoft.ReportingServices.Rendering.DataRenderer.CsvReport,Microsoft.ReportingServices.DataRendering">
<OverrideNames>
<Name Language="en-US">Excel (csv)</Name>
</OverrideNames>
</Extension>
Essentially I have set Visible = "false" for the Excel type, and tried to duplicate the CSV, changing the name to make it look to the user like it is "Excel". This fails. I checked the event viewer, and I see two entries.. The RSReportServer.config file has been modified. (Information)The value for UrlRoot in RSReportServer.config is not valid. The default value will be used instead.I literally took the file, opened it in Notepad, pasted in my changes, from another notepad window, and tried to run the report. I did not see EITHER of the two names I expected, using the OverrideNames tag. As I said earlier, I was able to affect the outcome, by setting SimpleHeaders to true (or however it is identified). That did work in that the page header and footer was removed.

I have a report builder drill down report. I have row groups with totals. It looks like the attached. The problem is when the report is not expanded the Grand Totals column is not accurate... it is displaying the totals of one of the rows when expanded.The expression in the Total Show text box is
= Switch (
MID(Fields!protocol_id.Value,1,7)="THERAPY",
Sum(IIF(Fields!status.Value = "CO", CDbl(Fields!TX_CO.Value), Nothing)),
MID(Fields!protocol_id.Value,1,7) = "GENERAL" and MID(Fields!program_id.Value,1,6)
= "INTAKE", Sum(IIF(Fields!status.Value = "CO",
[code]...
Is there any way to not display the expression in the Total columns unless the report is expanded?

I am trying to develop a report from cube,and it has one drill through report.when i click on sales amount field on main report,then it open the drill through report with details.Here i passed the **(category,subcat,product)parameters(Cascaded)** to drill through report in action part of main report.In my main report i have two columns .
columns are **Level** and **Salesamount**.
Values are like
**[-]category** **100**
**[-]subcat** **50**
**product** **30**
when i click on 100, parameters are passed & it open the detail report correctly, but when i click on 50,the values for subcat parameter is not getting values in detail report and same as the product also.
Here i used the expressions in parameter values
**pCategory**----iif(inscope(category),!fields.category.value,split(join(Parameters!category.value,","),","))
**psubcat**----iif(inscope(subcat),!fields.subcat.value,split(join(Parameters!subcat.value,","),","))

How do I get data on my linked report based on my grouped subtotal and grand total from the main report. The subtotal and grand total are calculated columns.
I have a 3 columns in my matrix in the SSRS summary report. Actn_COAST, ActnCITY and NumbOfAccts.
The following is code for my summary report. The results are shown below.
SELECT Distinct ActnCITY, Count(ACCT) as NumbOfAccts,
CASE WHEN ActnCITY in ('NY', 'OH', IN, 'NJ', 'SC', 'NC') THEN 'EAST COAST'
WHEN ActnCITY IN ('CA'. 'NV', 'UT', 'WA', 'OR') THEN 'WEST COAST'
ELSE 'OTHER'
END AS Actn_COAST
FROM tbl1
where ACTNDATE between @STARTDT and @EndDT
Code for my detail report contains the following SQL
SELECT * FROM tbl1 where ACTNDATE between @STARTDT and @EndDT AND @ActnCITY = ActnCITY
I have linked my report based on the NumbOfAccts column. I am able to get data if I click any of the NumbOfAccts values related to the state I want. However when I am not sure how to make the subtotal and grand total work. I want when I click on the subtotal of either coast, I should be able to see records of that coast e.g., if I select 37 I should be able to see all the records in East Coast. If I click on the Grand Total, I only want data related to those 2 coasts.
