Reporting Services :: Control Raw Height / White Space
Jul 20, 2015
I am trying to print only the grand total raw. The grand total is based on the information in the groups and therefore I cannot hide the groups.
Instead I am trying to minimize the size of the group raw by sizing font, shrink, etc but with no success. I still get a lot of unwanted space. How can resolve this?

I build a tablix A in SSRS, which contains a tablix B and a textbox C. When the report is exported to word,  I found that there is white space between the tablix B and textbox C if the row of tablix B is spilled over to next page.
If I export the report to PDF, the white space issue is gone.

I need to expand my page width and height. The report designer and report viewer allows me to do that. The expanded page does not export to the PDF Format. I am stuck width 6 1/4 x 8/12 for the PDF format. I am using the windows report viewer.

I have a table where I added several header rows above the details row and increased the row heights to 0.4in. The row height looks fine in preview, but when I export to Excel, it is as if I had not increased the row height. I have found through trial and error that if I place a textbox below my table and position it so that it is under the rightmost column of my table, then I get my desired row heights in Excel. If I remove the textbox or if it is not under the rightmost column then the row heights revert back to their original size. The textbox can be empty and still has the desired effect. i am using SQL Server 2008 RTM and VS 2008 SP1.

I have created an SSRS report containing a bar chart. The Y-axis contains some application names which are displayed based on a certain criteria. Hence sometimes there are only 2 values in y-axis while sometimes it may range upto 20 items. I have tried a lot but have been unsuccessful in getting a dynamic y-axis which changes with the number of items present.

I have a report which shows up as below,
Product Type - A
Product Name  - 1
Product Price - Â 1
Product Name - 2
Product Price - 2
Product Type - B
Product Name - 1.1
Product Price - 1.1
Product Name - 2.1
Product Price - 2.1
Product Name - 3.1
Product Price  - 3.1
Similarly i have different Product types and product names and its prices underneath each product type. As you can see, there might be varied number of products under the product type so i am grouping it on Product type. The issue is when i export the report to pdf or word, when ever we have a big group of Product Type( example: Product Type X and it has 10 different Products under it) along with few other smaller groups, the big group tends to jump on to the next page of word or pdf and leaves a big empty space in the previous page. Any way i can break those big groups and  fit  as many as we can on the page and the rest should follow onto the next page rather than leaving the previous page with blank space.Â

Ok, here is the problem.
Client created a database with Allocated Space of 5GB. THEY WILL ONLY EVER HOLD A MAXIMUM OF 1GB IN DATA!!! Don't ask.
In any case, they currently have a database filled with 600MB of Data and 4.4GB of White Space. From what I can see, the database is backing up that entire database nightly, based on 5GB of allocated space. It doesnt care that only 600MB is being used, it only knows that someone put aside 5GB and its gonna darn well back it up.
I need to get rid of that space. Their Backups are taking hours on end and Batch Files are timing out. Quite honestly, they dont need to back up 4.5GB of white space.
QUESTION:
How can I eliminate that white space? I have tried to run several SQL scripts to Truncate the DB and eliminate unused space, unfortunately it is not working.
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.
Matt.

I think this may be a dumb question, but here goes.If there is a lot of "white space" in a field in SQL Server, does it take upserver space, or is it just ignored?Example:Name of product<br>Manufacturer's Name<br>Manufacture's Phone number<br>Instead of this:Name of product<br>Manufacturer's Name<br>Manufacture's Phonenumber<br>I think it would, but maybe not?Thanks, J~

UPDATE #2: When it said "Do you want to install Microsoft SQL Server" I said "yes" and that caused it to work. I exited and re-ran and now the print runs w/o the "install SQL Server" (If the prompt had said "Do you want to install the print dialog" we wouldn't be having this discussion...)
UPDATE: After posting this i discovered that the same thing occurs when attempting to print the report direct from IE6: First a dialog pops up "Do you want to install this software?" Name: Microsoft SQL Server. When I click "Don't Install" I get the dialog "unable to load client print control." Since this happens direct from IE6 I suspect it's browser settings. I'll resume tomorrow and post a followup.
My WinForm C# app integrates Reporting Services by calling them from WebBrowser controls. The problem is attempts to print cause a dialog: "unable to load client print control."
I've read prior posts that say "enable Active-X in your browser" - I don't know how to do that from a WebBrowser control.
Any ideas how to support Reporting Services "Print" from within a WebBrowser control?

Good day to you, community friend!
Just a quick one - I swear I've seen a function before that was like Len() but it counted the white spaces too. I have a feeling it was something along the lines of "data_length" but I can't for the life of me find it!
Many thanks,
George

I am hoping there is either a quick fix within SQL reporting services or a 3rd party tool for SQL reporting services that will fix my error. If not, we will be forced to go back to Crystal Reports.
I have a large report, that per each record prints between 3 and 5 pages of information. It is laid out like an MS Word document (as that is what is needed to send off to the client), so it is in standard letter style with the text growing down vertically.
I have about 10 large text (SQL Server Text field types) fields on this report. The report itself was built using the SQL Reporting Services table tool, so I could correclty group the information into the same record and also to keep the needed specific report formatting.
Everything looks GREAT, except for large white space in the report. The cause is that each row on the SQL Reporting Services table contains a field of data. Well, in some instances there is too much text to fit on the current page of the report (in some cases as much as 3/4 a page of paper), so instead of starting to print on the page and then continuing to print on to the next page, the data will skip the page and start at the top of the next page.
This will leave large white spaces in my report. In one instance I have a Text field that with the correct formatting is larger than a page. So the report prints on 1/4 of page 2, is blank for remander 3/4 of a page 2, and then starts printing the large text field on the following page (page 3). So 3/4 of a page in my report is left empty.
Is there a work around for this, or a 3rd party tool that can be purchased to allow for this? I have not found a setting or a way to keep the table rows together as there is in Crystal Reports.
Thank you for your help!
T.J.

I am generating a Report from Sql Data Source in Sql Server 2005 and viewing the Report in Report viewer control of Visual Studio 2005.
The data in the Data Source contains string with multiple spaces (for example €œ Test String €œ) but when they get rendered in Report viewer control, multiple spaces gets converted to single space €? Test String €œ.
I tried following solutions
1) Replacing spaces with €œ €?
2) Inserting <pre> tag before the string and </pre> tag after the string (Also tried <Pre> instead of <pre>)
But in all the cases result is same. The Report Viewer control is showing €œ €? instead of space and €œ<Pre>€? tag instead of preserving spaces.
Please provide me a solution so that spaces can be preserved in Report Viewer.

Hello everyone,
In reports ,My customer requirement is to display column based on selected criteria in UI .
The columns which are not selected by him will hide.
for that we kept an expression in Visibility --> Hide
Code Snippet
= NOT Parameters!Parameters.Value.ToString().Contains("Name")
then coming to HTML Report
It is working fine,but white space coming at end of the Table.
can't we supress the white space?
The white space width is exactly the width of the column which is hidden.
My designing in layout is wrong?
Else is that Problem with the SSRS?
Experts Please let me Know!!!!
Give me Solution!!!
Customer is strictly focusing on that requirement.
***Note: white Space is Some what Acceptable.But My Reports are very big like 45 columns around.When he selects 10 out of 45 then you can assume how much space is coming????????****

Hello
I have created a report that works how I want it in the visual studio 2003 designer. I have deployed it to our test box (sql server 2k, reporting services with sp2) and when we preview the report, there is a giant white space between the graph in the report and the matrix object below it. This white space was not in the designer. It only shows when previewing the report. If you print from the report manager, it does not print the white space.
Is there a way to remove it from the report manager when the report is previewed? I am sure users will complain when they see this.
Thanks.

I have a report that (for purposes of this example) displays States and the Cities in a state.
Now the State is the first group which I want to drill down into by expanding and then show the Cities as the detail line.
What I would expect to happen (and what does happen if I use the wizard instead of creating the report manually) is that I would click on a State and then the page would expand to make room for all the cities listed below.
(That is to say if I am showing only states, not expanded, then all 50 states fit on a single page. Then if I expand California all the states below that shift onto other pages to make room for the 400+ cities in California)
However, what happens is that when I preview the report instead of being 1 page long it is many pages in length with empty white space between the States (white space that would be occupied by the cities if I were to expand the state).
Can someone tell me what setting I need to adjust to get the report to dynamically resize when I expand/collapse groups?
Thank you.

I have some sql below..
SELECT
t.Doctor, t.LedgerAmount, t.TransactionDate,
ISNULL(lg.LedgerGrpDesc, 'No Sales Group') AS LedgerGroup
FROM
Transactions t
LEFT OUTER JOIN LedgerGroups lg ON t.LedgerDescription = lg.dbLedgerDesc
[Code] .....
My problem is that the data in t.LedgerDescription sometimes now has either leading/trailing white space or more likely special chars so the join against lg.dbLedgerDesc doesn't always work.
I can't change the source of the data to strip out special chars/white space so am stuck on how to deal with it.
I tried using LTRIM & RTRIM in the where clause but this doesn't seem to have had any effect...
LEFT OUTER JOIN LedgerGroups lg ON LTRIM(RTRIM(t.LedgerDescription)) = lg.dbLedgerDesc

I have a report (stored procedure) that I have set up in SQL 2005 Reporting Services. I've designed this report (using SQL server business intelligence studio), and several other reports, thinking that running totals or summing may be the issue, but it hasn't been. The latest iteration has been just a display of product info, about 100 records, no fields formatted or summed. Very very simple, straight-forward report. If I go to the Report server & upload the rdl file, it displays fine, performs as it should, paging & exporting - everything works fine. The issue comes up when in a web app, I put a Reportviewer control on the page, and call the report.
It works, sort of.
Originally, I had written the page using ASP.NET AJAX Enabled web project, and I had been using the Tab Container on the page. What happens is when I open it on that tab (I am using AJAX Tab panels, which had been working fine without this behavior prior to finally getting the reportviewer working), and the report displays, the "e" on Internet explorer at the top of the tab now flickers, like the page is reloading. It also runs the CPU up to 100% on the computer and although I can go from tab to tab in it (I am using AJAX tab panels in the page), it will take like up to a minute to go to the next tab. I'm not doing anything really data-intensive on those tabs, and they had been functioning fine prior to putting in the report viewer (i.e. they weren't flickering & clocking the CPU).
Thinking that the Tab Container may be the issue, I created just a plain AJAX Enabled web project and put the same reportviewer on it. Same performance. It'll display the report, and then take the system up to 100% and stay there until I kill the browser.
After that, I did just a plain old ASP.Net web project and put the report viewer control on it. Same result. The report will display, but as soon as it does, the "e" on Internet Explorer tab starts flickering and you see the CPU go to 100% and stay there. I've left it for 20-30 minutes with no change. It appears as if the page is constantly refreshing.
Thinking that the issue may be related to having the reportviewer report hard coded in the app, I put a button on the page, and assigned the button to put in the report. It displays, but it again runs the CPU up to 100% and stays there.
I thought that having Asynch = True (run the report asynchronously) might be the issue, but setting it to false made no difference.
I eventually have to kill the page to do anything, because it has the system up to 100%.
The code I am using on this page follows:
Here's the code in the codefile:
Private Sub Page_Load(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles MyBase.Load
If Not Page.IsPostBack Then
Me.ReportViewer1.Visible = False
End If
ReportViewer1.ServerReport.ReportPath = ""
End Sub
Protected Sub Button1_Click(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button1.Click
ReportViewer1.Visible = True
ReportViewer1.ServerReport.ReportPath = "/BA10listing"
End Sub
The code in the aspx part of the page:
<%@ Page Language="VB" AutoEventWireup="false" CodeFile="Default.aspx.vb" Inherits="_Default" %>
<%@ Register Assembly="Microsoft.ReportViewer.WebForms, Version=8.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b03f5f7f11d50a3a"
Namespace="Microsoft.Reporting.WebForms" TagPrefix="rsweb" %>
<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">
<html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" >
<head runat="server">
<title>Untitled Page</title>
</head>
<body>
<form id="form1" runat="server">
<div>
<asp:Button ID="Button1" runat="server" Text="Button" />
<rsweb:ReportViewer ID="ReportViewer1" runat="server" Font-Names="Verdana" Font-Size="8pt" Height="400px" ProcessingMode="Remote" Width="400px" AsyncRendering="False" ShowDocumentMapButton="False">
<ServerReport ReportPath="/BA10listing" ReportServerUrl="http://mycomputer/ReportServer$SQL2005/" />
</rsweb:ReportViewer>
</div>
</form>
</body>
</html>
.... so you can see there's a lot going on here. The report returns ~100 records or so, no calculations, no summation, no grand totals. Basically a "nothing" report, just listing product info data.
In SQL Reporting Services in the web browser, this report displays fine, no problems. It's only when I call it from the Reportviewer inside a web page that it hangs.
Any idea why reportviewer might make this act this way?
My system is running Windows XP, VS 2005, I have both SQL 2000 and SQL 2005 on this same box. I have a server that has both SQL 2000 & SQL 2005 on it as well, and the behavior is the same for both, whether I run the web page with the Reportviewer control on it with the report being on the local system, or the remote system.
Any help or advice would be very much appreciated.
Thanks!!!

1. A can access Vaues(1, 3)
2. B can access Values (2, 4)
3. C can access Values(3,5)
Is there anyway i can do this either from the stored procedure i am getting the data or i can do it on SSIS development side?
