Reporting Services :: Design Pattern For Holding Back Subscriptions When ETL Hasn't Completed
Jun 19, 2015
I'm working on an application that allows users to set up scheduled time based reports. Each scheduled report creates a SQL Agent job associated with a schedule. The default time to fire these off is 8:00 AM. There are several hundred. DWH and it has no trouble running hundreds of reports all fired off at the same time.
There are several ETL processes and occasionally they don't complete before our verbal SLA of 8:00 AM.
My problem is on days where the ETL runs past 8:00 AM I wan't to hold these scheduled jobs from firing off.

I tried creating one simple bar chart report in SSRS, with background fill with pattern "UpwardDiagonal", the stripes on the column when viewed insider report viewer control is quite prominently visible, whereas when exporting the same report to PDF the lines are very thin and dense and hence makes it very difficult to differentiate between one column with pattern inside and one without. I have even tried various other pattern like "LightUpwardDiagonal" and "WideUpwardDiagonal" but all have same result when exported to PDF.why?

In a bar chart, we are using the LargeCheckerBoard as the pattern style in series properties > fill. It is showing correctly on the browser but if we export to PDF, this style(checks) are getting small and different from what shown on the browser.

In report builder 2.0, I cannot determine how to display the number of times a field has been filled out when a one to many relationship is involved. I get an error every time I use two aggregates.
ID, Symptom_ID
1, 111
2, NULL
3, 222
3, 333
3, 444
4, NULL
5, 666
The result should be 3 out of 5 records... Or even better displayed as a percentage of the total 60%

I have a RS 2008 R2 SP3 Service in SharePoint Integrated Mode.
Since 5 days my Subscriptions were not sent anymore. I did no changes to these machines. There were some data driven subscriptions in pending state. I delete these entries via SharePoint.
When I look at Report server Execution Logs, there is no error, that i can associate to subscriptions. New Subscription are created and deleted in the Log, but they will never been processed.
I have done a Reboot to the RS Box but, that was not the solution.

I've done some basic database design in the past, but am a relative newbie to design. I have recently come across a situation I'm not sure how to handle. Here's the situation...
Assume we've got a contacts table which holds information about our contacts. All contacts have the same basic information - name, address, telephone, etc. Each contact is of a certain type - let's just say a, b, and c, for ease. This contact type is stored in the contacts table. Now, on contacts of type b, I also have to store some additional data. What it is doesn't really matter. I found a way to set this up, but I'm not sure that I'm going about it the right way, and would love some advice on the proper way to do this. Basically, what I did is create my contacts table:
Contact_id, contactName, ContactAddress, ContactPhone, ContactType.
Created a contacttype table
ContactType, ContactTypeDescription, ContactAddInfo
What I've done is left contactaddInfo as a nullable field. When it has a value, that value is the name of a table which holds the additional information that I need for the contact... So when I'm running a query, I can tell if I need to reference another table by checking the value of ContactAddInfo.
I can't imagine that this is the best solution, but it was the first thing that popped into my head, and it's a really small database that's using it. However, I'm now being faced with the same situation in a much more important, larger database, and I'd love to know the 'right' way.
Thanks for any guidance you can provide!
Erin

I am looking for a good tutorial on how to set up Data Driven subscriptions through the SharePoint 2012 version of SSRS. I am needing to set up a Data Driven subscription that uses one report, but sends out the specific portion of the report to the appropriate recipients. I have used the information located at URL.... but it doesn't seem to provide all the steps needed to schedule the reports needed. It focuses around setting up the reports to go to shared folder locations. I need something around setting it up to go to email recipients.

I have a Daily Invoice Report that has subscriptions for all customers and is run every night. The report has parameters of @date & @Customer. We had issues with invoices not being sent due to the Owner on the reports was disabled in Active Directory. We do not know how many reports did not get sent out so I am tasked with creating a script to rerun the reports for each day in August. I have queried the subscriptions, but need to figure out how to rerun the reports using the existing parameters set in the subscription, increment the report parameter date, and execute the emailing of the report.
Here is my query that gives me all the subscription information, but how do I rerun the job for all subscriptions for each date in August?
SELECT USR.UserName AS SubscriptionOwner
,SUB.ModifiedDate
,SUB.[Description]
,SUB.EventType
,SUB.DeliveryExtension

I have an instance of SSRS that will not run my report subscriptions if it is using a dedicated domain account I made for the express purpose of using it to run this service.
If I have SSRS use my personal domain account as the service account, my subscriptions run correctly. If I have SSRS use this other domain account, the subscriptions do not run.
What else do I have to configure to make this run correctly not on my personal account?
Error message below.
"ERROR: Throwing Microsoft.ReportingServices.Diagnostics.Utilities.ServerConfigurationErrorException: AuthzInitializeContextFromSid: Win32 error: 5; possible reason - service account doesn't have rights to check domain user SIDs., Microsoft.ReportingServices.Diagnostics.Utilities.ServerConfigurationErrorException: The report server has encountered a configuration error. ;"

I have researched this question and so far have found very different opinions as to how or if it is possible.I have created 2 Data-driven subscriptions in SSRS. 1 for our sales persons and another for our managers reports. For the salespersons report, the solution works brilliantly as expected and I can appreciated the increased simplicitly for having 1 subscription to drive reports to a sales staff of over 100 folks. One the other hand, I can't seem to grasp the significance of this type of solution for the Sales managers when they have multiple salespersons that report to them.
Apparently, SSRS 2008 has provided no practical solution for this scenario that would be easily implemented in a Data driven subscription.Since I can't find a way to pass in muliple integer values that represent each of the salesreps for a single manager, I am stuck with potentially sending multiple reports for each of the Sales Reps residing under a single manager. Not very elegant or useful as I'd hoped for using Data driven subscriptions. I have even changed the parameter datatype to string and used something like:
paramSalesPeople = substring((SELECT ( ', ' + CAST(territoryid AS VARCHAR(2000)))
FROM Reports..SalesForce t2
WHERE t1.SalesManagerID = t2.SalesManagerID
ORDER BY SalesManagerID
FOR XML PATH( '' )), 3, 1000 )
To create a comma-delimited list of values for the parameters in effort of generating 1 (ONE) record per Manager. But the Data Driven Subscription fails miserably. So the question, Is it or is it not possible to have multiple values passed as a single parameter to a data driven subscription to consolidate the number of required reports into one. If not, it would seem that it should be possible since it can be done from the reports parameters drop-down menu.I have read someones recommendation to script the multi-valued parameter which seems to defeat the intent of the term "Data Driven' Subscription if I have to hard-code this logic into a script.

I have a single data driven subscription that is a batch of 250 subscriptions running on SQL Server 2008 R2. All the parameter values for the report are sourced from a database table. During the execution of the data driven subscription 5 of those subscriptions failed due to timeout error.
Final Status as shown on Subscription screen "Done: 250 processed of 250 total; 5 errors."
The SSRS log file has the subscription GUID which is a single record in the reporting server database tables. How can i identify the individual failed subscriptions? Is there an easy way or a work around that i should implement to identify the failed subscriptions?

Say I have an object that can be created by some users and not others. And, I have a method something like - function createObject(userId as Integer, objectName as String). The method calls a stored procedure using the two input arguments as parameters. Now, what I am wondering is this; I am obviously going to check in my SP to ensure that the user has the rights to create the new object before inserting the new record, and there will be an output parameter to send the new record ID back to the method, but do Ia) have a separate output parameter to report on the success of the creation (e.g. @Err Int OUTPUT)b) use the existing output (used to send the new record ID back) and send an error code (e.g. if newRecordId = -9999)c) somehow try to cause a failure of the SP that can be caught in a try/catch blockThanks in advance,Martin

All,
Im pretty confused on this one.I have developed and deployed 10 packages on my Report Manager.Currently these packages are saved on a share drive in our company and are saved in the MSDB folder in SSIS Integration Services in Mngt Studio.Thses packages are also scheduled as jobs on the server itself. Our db is being backed up daily as well.
My question:
Is there any other way for me to backup the packages in the SSIS Integration Services?
Read on msdn, it states that the MSDB db stores SSIS and DTS packages.Does that mean in case my server goes down and I restore my database which includes the MSDB db.This means that when I connect to the SSIS Integration Services after the restore I would be able to see my saved packages on the server as before the restore.
Anyone out there who did a db restore and noticed if the saved packages where made available in the SSIS Integration Services after the restore.
What are the other possible solutions to ensure my packages are safe?
Is doing a FULL db backup, include saving SSIS packages on SSIS Integration Services.
Another Question: What about the reports that are made available in the Reporting Services, the subscription of these reports, the Roles that I have created and the scheduling being done for the reports. How can I backup all of these? How to ensure after a db restore all these would be made available in the Reporting Services as well?
Help me....Im extremely confused

Hi,
I need to store a list of parameters in a database. Each parameter has a name, description, comment and a value. Easy so far.
However the values are of different types. Each individual parameter has a value which may be of type int, decimal, string, boolean, custom type etc.
Which table design pattern is most appropriate?
We have a heated in-house discussion and I need supporting arguments.
Options explored so far:
1) (De-)serializing the value to a string-type.
2) Adding a column for each type, using only one column at a time.
3) Adding extra value-tables, one table for each type.
The disadvantages for each option are obvious and the basis for our discussion.
Your help in this matter will be appreciated.
Regards, Tonn

Hi
I've installed SQL Server Express 2005 SP2 CTP specifically because I require the "Select All" checkbox to reappear in multi-value parameters.
This was successful in Business Intelligence Studio and when i preview the report the MV params have Select All options.
However, when I deploy to the web the MV params do not have Select All options.
Why would this be?

Dear all,
I have a client that has 4 reports; 1 main, and 3 that are rendered when the user clicks the report data on the main report (which passes parameters to generate the other 3).
They would like to have a back button in the report header of the 3 reports (they don't want to use the browser back button).
Is this possible using a text box, then editing the navigation properties and does anyone have an example? Or am I missing something quite obvious?
Any help would be gratefully received!!
Dan

We recently upgraded from ReportViewer 9.0 to 10.0 Control in our ASP.NET application, and face some strange issues after the upgrade. When we press the Back button to go to a page that was rendering a report with one or more single-select drop down lists, the selected index in the drop down is reduced by 1, and the report doesn't render until I press "View Report". I verified that exact same setup works well with ReportViewer 9.0.

I am trying to find a reference for a client that lists the fields available to be substituted into a data driven subscription from the query, along with the expected data types. For example, the field on whether or not to include a link to the report seems to be expecting a bit data type.I have searched and can't seem to find anything. I guess I could walk through the interface and try different data types, but if a list exists, that would be better.

Here is the scenario:
1. have report called report_a.rdl with subscriptions attached to it
2. developed a new report called report_b.rdl with the same parameter list as report_a.rdl
3. i would like to replace report_a.rdl with report_b.rdl without losing the subscriptions.
I think this is the workflow:
1. rename report_a.rdl to report_a_old.rdl in BIDS
2. rename report_b.rdl to report_a.rdl in BIDs
3. deploy report_a.rdl to reporting server
Will that work even though the ReportID GUID will change?

On our project we export SSRS reports to Excel. Report Definition Language (RDL) enables you to use several measurement units (for example, inches, pixels, centimeters, and points) to specify position and size values. However, Excel uses only points. Therefore, the SSRS Excel rendering extension converts the height and width of the table, the heights of the rows, and the widths of the columns to points.
This process may include rounding some values. In this situation, the table height or width and the sum of the row heights or column widths are different. To compensate for the difference, the SSRS Excel rendering extension inserts a small row or column to the workbook.
To prevent that ‘hidden’ row or column, we configure the table height and width to a value specified in "pt" (points) rather than "cm". 1 cm is about 28 points. Is it possible to configure SSRS to use points by default while designing a report?

I am new to Reporting Services, and I would like to serve up SQL 2005 Reporting Services reports via an ASP.NET web app (possibly using Report Viewer controls in Server mode). The web app will be running on an IIS server outside the firewall.
I would prefer to have the Reporting Services server be inaccessible outside the firewall, but it seems that the client browsers need direct URL access to the Reporting Services server. I guess this means either locating the Reporting Services server outside the firewall, or opening a hole in the firewall for access to the Reporting Services server.
Is there a Microsoft best-practice methodology/white-paper that addresses this scenario (especially as regards security concerns)?
Alternately, would it be possible, and would the same report presentation functionality be available (reports with expanding/collapsing sections, choice of export formats, etc), by calling the Reporting Services web service directly from the ASP.NET app, and manually populating the Response object?
Thanks. Any help would be appreciated.
