I am new to Reporting Services, and I would like to serve up SQL 2005 Reporting Services reports via an ASP.NET web app (possibly using Report Viewer controls in Server mode). The web app will be running on an IIS server outside the firewall.
I would prefer to have the Reporting Services server be inaccessible outside the firewall, but it seems that the client browsers need direct URL access to the Reporting Services server. I guess this means either locating the Reporting Services server outside the firewall, or opening a hole in the firewall for access to the Reporting Services server.
Is there a Microsoft best-practice methodology/white-paper that addresses this scenario (especially as regards security concerns)?
Alternately, would it be possible, and would the same report presentation functionality be available (reports with expanding/collapsing sections, choice of export formats, etc), by calling the Reporting Services web service directly from the ASP.NET app, and manually populating the Response object?
Thanks. Any help would be appreciated.
I am using sql server 2012 and report builder 3.0 for building my report
I have a querry which produce the following output
Is there a way directly in report builder to add a new column field which need to produce the following output :
RUNNING STOCK 8         (calculated from ProductTotalWeight - StockBalance) 10      (calculated from Previous row value + StockBalance) 8       (calculated from Previous row value + StockBalance) 10     .... 8 10 8
First off, let me just say that I'm a complete newbie to SQL Reporting Services, and .NET in general. We have a VB 6 application that is trying to launch an SRS 2005 report in a viewer window. This was accomplished by creating A VB.NET "wrapper" window that launches the report, and allows the report to be previewed, exported, etc. I did not write any of this.
The report is using a Shared Data Source, which points to a specific database. My problem is that the users can select which db they want when they launch the VB 6 Application, so I need to find a way to edit the connection string in the report to specify which database to use on the fly. I have the db name in the "wrapper" application, but I can't figure out how to pass it to the report.
I am invoking RS web services to render reports, using Apache Axis to generate stub classes from Reporting Service WSDL.
Please let me know if I can integrate Report Viewer control in the jsp where I am writing the report output. Else do I have to create my own custom tags simulating ReportViewer functionality.
Hello everyone I have a small application in asp.net now I’m trying to use the SQL reporting services. But as soon as I try to connect to the DB on the “connection properties window I get this error. Unable to open the physical file "C:myAppsmydb.mdf". Operating system error 32: "32(The file is in use by another process.)".
Hi all, I don't know if this is possible or not but what I want to do is include a few images on a report that will launch a little VB6 application when clicked. I've tried messing with the Navigation - URL properties of the image but am getting nowhere fast! Anyone any ideas?
I have an existing vb6 application which used Crystal reports .dsr inside the vb application for the forms. Now I need to change to Reporting services reports. I haven't worked in VB before. I am looking for some guidelines as to how to hook up the Reporting Services reports to vb6 application.
All of a sudden I am getting an error when connecting to reporting services, not sure how long it has been going on, but I know reporting services was working when we moved to WSS3.0.

Has anyone seen this error come up before or know of a quick fix for it.
Recently we upgraded to TFS 2008 and WSS 3.0 but the reporting services was still working after that.
On our project we export SSRS reports to Excel. Report Definition Language (RDL) enables you to use several measurement units (for example, inches, pixels, centimeters, and points) to specify position and size values. However, Excel uses only points. Therefore, the SSRS Excel rendering extension converts the height and width of the table, the heights of the rows, and the widths of the columns to points.
This process may include rounding some values. In this situation, the table height or width and the sum of the row heights or column widths are different. To compensate for the difference, the SSRS Excel rendering extension inserts a small row or column to the workbook.
To prevent that ‘hidden’ row or column, we configure the table height and width to a value specified in "pt" (points) rather than "cm". 1 cm is about 28 points. Is it possible to configure SSRS to use points by default while designing a report?
I'm trying to rertieve specific RS 2005 report by passing WebApp control value (this.VCtrlNo.Text) to "CV Report" - name of my report with the following scripts.
1) No Action - when clicked. AutoPostBack is set and properly initialized.
2) This just opened the default page instead of specific report. <a href="http://localhost/Reports/Pages/Report.aspx?ItemPath=%2fReports+Folder%2fCV+Report&rc=Render&vctrlno=10-0000037", target="_blank">Open CV Report </a>
Where "Reports" is the reportmanager, vctrlno is the parameter name (properly set) and obviously I want to open a new page.
I would be very thankful to anyone who can lead to make this work.
I installed Reporting Services Add-in for Sharepoint 2007, on my Server where i have both Sharepoint 2007 and SQL Server 2005 and report Server are installed, i already installed SQL Server SP2, but in SharePoint 3.0 Central Administration under Application Management Reporting Services section is not Showing.
Please let me know if anybody has the got the same issue and fix it.
when I try to open the SSRS in BIDS ( VS 2008), it is displaying the code portion alone. If i click 'View Designer', it prompts me like "....already opened. Do you want to close?" Only XML content of report is displaying. if I click 'Viee Code' then it displays error like "There is no editor available for 'c: eport Sample. rdl'.Make sure the application for the file type (.rdl) is installed."how to correct this issue by installing or by upgrading?
I have a report that I need to develop in landscape format. Also I need it to be landscape when converting to PDF and taking printouts. let me know the exact height and width measurements in inches for the report and report body?
I have an application that uses SQL Report Builder to edit templates. When I go to add a dataset to add a custom field to the report, I get a permissions error (screenshot Error). When I check the credentials for the shared datasource, they are all grayed out, so I can’t verify the credentials being used (screenshot Error 2). According to SQL Management Studio, the user credentials have the right permissions. The weird thing is, I can access the datasets and shared datasource embedded in the report just fine. I just get a permissions error whenever trying to create a new dataset.
When I am working on an Integrations Services project and I open a Reporting Services file, it displays it in the Code view. Is there a way to display it in the Design view? Or do I have to close the project and open up a Reporting Services project?
I have a very frustrating problem. But given that this is a development forum, I'll keep that for my 'Envelope Lickers Rehab' and instead talk about an issue I'm having.
I have a very large query (line-wise) that executes in less than a minute when run from the SQL Management Studio as well as via Excel Services.Â
It is a stored procedure with one parameter. When I try to prime the designer with this query it gives me the following message:
"Timeout expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding. The statement has been terminated."
I've considered cracking open the xml source and manually creating the fields, but I'd rather not go there.
When  I click on the DataSet Query Desginer there is an Error Source:.NetSqlClient Data Provider. why this error comes and I have executed the SQL query in SSMS succesfully and the result comes. However this is causing the report from the report manager to fail.
I Installed SQL Reporting services 2012 service with sharepoint 2013 ... and started it with success..I followed the microsoft's procedure.. I'm working on an application that allows users to set up scheduled time based reports. Each scheduled report creates a SQL Agent job associated with a schedule. The default time to fire these off is 8:00 AM. There are several hundred. DWH and it has no trouble running hundreds of reports all fired off at the same time.
There are several ETL processes and occasionally they don't complete before our verbal SLA of 8:00 AM.
My problem is on days where the ETL runs past 8:00 AM I wan't to hold these scheduled jobs from firing off.
I recently installed SQL Server 2005 Enterprise on a machine running Server 2003. I have successfully configured Reporting Services (see below for summary of settings) - Used the defaults for the Repor tServer and Report Manager Virtual Directories - Windows Service Identity set to domain user. The domain user is part of the administrator group on the machine and has sysadmin rights to the database - Web Service Identity set to NT AuthorityNetworkService
When I open http://localhost/reports/, I get the following error:
I have check a bunch of forums, but have no success. Any advise would be greatly appreciated!!

We are facing problem to start the Microsoft SQL server Reporting services. While starting the Report Manager, we are getting a message called “SERVER APPLICATION UNAVAILABLE”. We checked the Event log for errors. We found the error id 1007, 1084, but it’s related to asp.net
We find that if we deploy the OLAP database with a different name on the test server, then regardless of how we change the connection string provided to the SSIS package that processes the cube, then the package fails to connect to the database. To clarify:
In development the OLAP database is called MyOlapDB and the source database is called MySqlDB. Both are on the same machine. When the the application is built and released for test, the test team install the databases on a replica of the production environment (i.e. web app on one machine, OLAP DB on another and SQL database on yet another). They also, quite rightly, implement the new test databases so they incorporate the build version number. So, MyOlapDB123 and MySqlDB123 are both from build 123.
This is when the problems start. Regardless of how the connection string is specified in the job that processes the cube, the SSIS integration package fails with the error:
[Analysis Services Execute DDL Task] Error: Errors in the metadata manager. Either the database with the ID of 'MyOlapDB' does not exist in the server with the ID of 'OurTestServer', or the user does not have permissions to access the object.
We have tried config files and job properties, but neither work. Also, simply attempting to run the package using the DTEXECUI does not work either.
Looking inside the XML of the package, we clearly see the ConnectionManager object which has the original connection string, which is
Data Source=localhost;Initial Catalog=MyOlapDB;Provider=MSOLAP.3;Integrated Security=SSPI;Impersonation Level=Impersonate;
However, editing the initial catalog here still does not solve the problem. Searching the XML for the string MyOlapDB reveals the OLAP database name in two other places - both within the object data of the two Analysis Services Execute DDL tasks.
Anyone know how to solve this problem without having to hack the XML of the package?
I'm designing an application that will be deployed to 500 users. It is very database intensive (selects, inserts, updates, deletes). One select statement could possibly have up to 20,000 records returned. My question is, where should I put the database? Is this a bad candidate to have the database on one remote server? Or should I install sql server express on each users desktop? Any design issues I should consider?
EDIT: Please skip over this and go to the 2nd post. After writing this, I realized it may be too complicated to comprehend, so I tried to simplify with another example which is found in the 2nd post. Or if you want you can read this one and try to understand it.
I would like to go over a design we came up with to handle a certain reporting requirement from an OLAP cube to see if this is a good approach. Also, I would like to hear about other designs that we can consider.
Here is the condensed version of the requirement.
We are measuring the performance of a bunch of portfolios. So among other dimensions, we have a portfolio dimension that holds the list of portfolios we are tracking. In a typical portfolio analysis, an analyst almost always looks at a portfolio's measures along side a benchmark portfolio's measures. A benchmark is another portfolio against which a selected portfolio is compared. So, for a given portfolio, there is a determined benchmark portfolio.
For example, an analyst might want to look at a measure called Annual_Yield for a portfolio called Portfolio_A. There will be an attribute on the member Portfolio_A that tells us what its benchark portfolio is. That attribute will basically be another member from the portfolio dimension. So, as a function of what an analyst chooses as the first portfolio (the subject portfolio), the cube should be smart enought to know what to select as the second portfolio (the benchmark portfolio).
To implement this, I am proposing the following structure for the table that will create the portfolio dimension.
So, the above data says that Portfolios A, B, and D uses Portfolio C as their benchmarks. And Portfolio E uses Portfolio F as its benchmark. Lastly, if a portfolio is used as a benchmark for other portfolios, then its BenchmarkID is null, meaning it doesn't get compared to anything, thus Portfolios C and F have null BenchmarkIDs. With this data, I would create a hierarchy in the portfolio dimension that has two levels. At the top level, there will be a portfolio and if that portfolio has a benchmark, then it will drill down to it.
With a portfolio dimension designed as such, I envision a fact table that looks like the following.
I am trying to migrate my reports from SQL server 2000 reporting services 32bit to 2005 64bit. I am following the migration steps that MS specified. Restored my Reportserver and ReportserverTempDB databases Then I was using the configure Report services to upgrade these databases but I always end up getting the follwoing exception when I run the upgrade on the "Database Setup" configuration for 'ReportServerTempDB' database System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Could not locate entry in sysdatabases for database 'ReportServerTempDBTempDB'. No entry found with that name. Make sure that the name is entered correctly. at System.Data.SqlClient.SqlConnection.OnError(SqlException exception, Boolean breakConnection) at System.Data.SqlClient.SqlInternalConnection.OnError(SqlException exception, Boolean breakConnection) at System.Data.SqlClient.TdsParser.ThrowExceptionAndWarning(TdsParserStateObject stateObj) at System.Data.SqlClient.TdsParser.Run(RunBehavior runBehavior, SqlCommand cmdHandler, SqlDataReader dataStream, BulkCopySimpleResultSet bulkCopyHandler, TdsParserStateObject stateObj) at System.Data.SqlClient.SqlCommand.RunExecuteNonQueryTds(String methodName, Boolean async) at System.Data.SqlClient.SqlCommand.InternalExecuteNonQuery(DbAsyncResult result, String methodName, Boolean sendToPipe) at System.Data.SqlClient.SqlCommand.ExecuteNonQuery() at Microsoft.ReportingServices.Common.DBUtils.ApplyScript(String connectionString, String script) at ReportServicesConfigUI.SqlClientTools.SqlTools.ApplyScript(String connectionString, String script)
It's driving me crazy, why is it looking for 'ReportServerTempDBTempDB' in the catalog instead of 'ReportServerTempDB'? Is it possible to migrate from 32bit to 64bit?
Hello, I was wondering if any of you experts might assist me in properly creating a database for my application. I've been pondering for a few days on how to accomplish this, but it seems that it doesnt have to be as complex as I am thinking...I just have to know how.
First off, I want to populate a dataset from a database in which I can databind to a datalist or repeater control. My datalist or repeater will have the following information in the ItemTemplate. Each ItemTemplate will consist of a table with 1 row with 3 columns cells. In each cell, the data will be laid out as accordingly.
When the datalist or repeater is populated, it will need to be tried against a value that the user selects. For instance, the user selects 100,000 from a listbox and fetches the next page which will show the diagram above...he/she will see those results. However, if the user selects 110,000, the diagram above will have for the most part the same Unique Number and Descriptions, but the prices will vary. The reason I say for the most part with the Unique Number and Descriptions, is because I want to later be able to add admin access to add additional rows and appropriate prices to each Unique Number and Description.
Now the tricky part is, I could just add the listbox values to a table as a unique key and associated them with the Unique Number, Description and Price, however there are about 50 different options the user can select from and approx 50 different rows of Unique Numbers, Descriptions and Price . So you can see, I would have to set up the diagram each time for every possible selection from the listbox, which wouldnt really be efficient I presume.
I want to be able to populate the datalist or repeater so it could have say 50 Unique Numbers with Descriptions and Price at selection 100,000. And also that it might only populate with 45 Unique Numbers and Descrptions and Price at selection 110,000 because the 5 missing dont pertain to the selection of 110,000. I am trying to do it this way because at sometime, I want the admin to be able to add/delete a Unique Number, a Description for it and a corresponding price that correlates to the selection from the listbox.
Thanks for all your help guys. I really appreciate it. For the most part I understand what Im doing, I just need to be walked thru it a bit. Thanks again!
I am a developer and I have a problem trying to design a system to manage data coming from web surveys. On average each subject will take part in more than one survey and each survey may potentially have 100+ questions.
I am focusing here only on the table(s) that will hold the survey data.
I'm thinking about having a wide table storing each question in the survey(s) as a column against the subjects. My main concerns with this approach:
- the "yuckiness" and potentially other performance issues(?) associated with a table with 100s of columns - the 8kb size limit per row (unlikely to touch it, but possible) - 1024 column limit (unlikely to touch it, but possible)
Another approach obviously is to have a single table where we have, in a simplified version, 3 columns: person_id, question_id and data/ answer. The problem with this is that the "data" column will have to accommodate all types of data, from bits to varchars, and that field validation seems now impossible jeopardizing data integrity, and most importantly, you can't easily work with the data in filtering/ reporting etc.
What do knowledgeable designers come up with in this case? Can someone point me in the right direction?
We are planning to move all of our System Center Databases that reside on front end servers to each system center application to a centrally located SQL 2012 server. We'd like to centralize everything and have our DBA care for the server. here is our setup:
SCOM has 1 monitoring and 1 Data warehouse server. SCCM has 1 server with all roles on it. DPM database is on the same server as Application. Same with SCVMM. I have 2 questions regarding this move:
1. Can I have all these databases running on 1 SQL instance?
2. Is there a best practice document that highlights steps and "gotchyas"
I don't know what category would be appropriate for this question but security seems to be close enough.
I have this case scenario: I am running an automated application that extracts data from a web site and stores the data into a table on SQL server 2005. This information is not confidential in the extreme of social insurance #'s, bank account #s, but should not be seen by a typical employee (it has no use for them). After the data has been stored, it retrieves the data from the same table, processes it, and updates the same table. This application runs every hour infinitely.
Should all the insert, update, and select queries be stored under a stored procedure? I am not concern with performance. My concern would fall under design and security.
Is it worth to hide the details of inserting/updating/selecting behind a stored procedure? Or should I just allow the program to send select/update/insert SQL queries?
No employee (other then the developer and the DB admin) or customer ever access this table (They do not have permission from SQL). The username and passwords were created with security in mind.
