Restore Clustered SQL Server 2000 From Backup On Local Drive

We are attempting to restore one of our databases from a backup that went to a local drive on the server.
We see the backupset in the list but receive an error that it is not available when we try to use it. When we try to restore from device and select the files the drive letter is not available. When we attempt to enter the path to the file it can't locate it. We don't have space on our SAN to copy the backup there and we can't add the local drive to the cluster resources.
Is there a way to get this backup done?

Being a very novice SQL Server administrator, I need to ask the experts a question.
How do I go about moving a database from 1 drive to another? The source drive (C is local to the server, but the target drive (E is on a Storage Area Network (SAN), although it is still a local drive for the server. I want to move the database from C: to E:. Can someone provide me with instructions?

We are seeing very high Average Disk Queue Length numbers in one of our clusters (both nodes of the cluster are Virtual, but have their own dedicated virtual environments). Our main data drive also houses TempDB, which I would like to move.
Each node in the Active/Passive cluster are running Windows Server 2012 Standard 64bit and SQL Server 2012 Enterprise 64bit. There is a separate drive for Log files and data files.
The data files also have TempDB on them as previously mentioned. I am reading that you can set up a local disk on each node of the cluster, with the same drive letter and path and then move tempdb as you would with a stand alone SQL Server.

Hi,
I have created an sql server 2005 maintenance plan for a daily backup. The plan has two 'Back up database task' i.e. one backup on the local drive while the second on a network drive. When the plan is executed, a backup is created on the local drive but not on the network drive. If i check the log, it says "Access Denied" whereas i have full access to the network drive with complete permissions to read, write and delete.
Can anyone help me understand how to take a backup on both a local and network drive at the same time using a maintenance plan ? I shall be obliged...

I have a bug in SQL Server 2000 that I would like to discuss.
The bug is described briefly on http://support.microsoft.com/kb/821334.
"The potential for inconsistency in the backup history tables backupset and backupmediafamily is resolved. This issue may cause the restore process to point to the wrong backup files."
According to my experiences the bug is extremely serious. SQL Server backup and restore operations are not fully reliable. If you have a disaster situation there is a possibility that you can not perform a restore.
Technically a media_family_id is generated in a backup operation and inserted into msdb.dbo.backupmediafamily. What could happen is that a media_family_id, that already exists in backupmediafamily, is generated.
The bug is fixed from version 8.00.0859, but only if you have an special undocumented trace flag (3003) enabled.
Here is the information that I have got from Microsoft about this trace flag.
"Trace flag 3003 changes how SQL generates media_set_id for new backup files. It will guarantee that new media_set_id values in backupset table are unique when you create a new file with your backup. This is the only place in code where TF 3003 is used so it will not impact your SQL Server operations."
I have a SQL Server with 80 databases. I have a maintenance plan with full backup every 24 hours and log backup every 5 minutes.
The error happened on my server a few times every 24 hours. I believe it's a general problem.

Is this possible?
here is the situation. I have a DB on one system. I back it up and then restore it to a second system. This second system I run reports off of and I want to create custom views that do not exist on the original system. Can I restore the
backup DB from the remote system without wiping out the custom views on the local system?
I have to do this this way as they won't let us create the views we want on the remote system so the only way we have access to run the reports is by restoring the backup locally.

I tried generate backup file with .bak extension and tried restore into SQl server 2005 express edition but still it is not allowing to do so! This is a very urgent requirement of my client having 200 stores and one Head office. the HO has just installed SQL-Server 2005, The HO sends small backups of the data related to stock transfer which needs to be restored at stores. It was working find when both the HO and stores were SQL-Server 2000. but the process has come to a dead halt as the HO has SQL-Server 2005. It is not possible to convert the stores immediately. please help me out.

I was running Small Business Server 2003 with MS SQL Server 2000. I put backups of all my SQL Server 2000 databases on hard disk d: and the operating system and applications on c:/. I then reformatted c:/ (but left d:/ intact) and installed Windows XP Home. Then I installed MS SQL Server 2005 Developer's Edition.
I would like to now restore the backups of the SQL Server 2000 databases (still intact on drive d:/) to SQL Server 2005, but I get a variety of error messages.
I suspect that I am going about this the wrong way. I have done several hours of research in the documentation without success. I cannot attach the SQL Server 2000 database to SQL Server 2005 because it is a backup, not a database. I cannot migrate the databases as part of the installation of SQL Server 2005 because (a) they are back-ups, and (b) I don't have SQL Server 2000 installed when I install SQL Server 2005.
Is there a solution?

I'm trying to build a new cluster with SQL Server 2K Enterprise onWindows 2003 server. When I run the install, I tell it to put theprogram files on the D: (local) drive and the data/log files on shareddrives. However, after the installation is complete, almost all thefiles go in the C: drive in program filesMicrosoft SQL Server, ratherthan the D: drive (it does create a few files on D:). I have a Windows Internal Database (installed by SharePoint WSS 3.0) and SQL Server Management Studio Express installed on W2K3 Std server. The server has local hard disk drive C, E, F & G. However SQL Server Management Studio Express only recognize C and E drive, for example in the set default database location or in attach database file dialog window only C & E drive are available. Anyone knows why and how to fix the problem?

Hi All
I have a problem in transferring a 2005 backed up database to SQL Server 2000 SP3.
i got an error message, crux of it is
"too many backup devices specified only 64 allowed"
the i browsed MICROSOFT help, downloaded SQL 2000 SP4 - mentioned as a fix for the above error.
Now get a message,crux of it is
"current version of Database in 611 and destination version is 536"
Is there a solution????
should i download any other patches or

Does anyone know if this works to where the data is viewable/usable?
I have an application that takes datasets out of the SQL database. We decommisioned our old SQL 2000 SP4 machine and brought in a SQL 2005 Server. What we did was backed up the old database and then restored it on the new Server.
Now the application does not see the old datasets but will collect new ones that are viewable. We can import older datasets but we have nearly 27 GB of data, which our DBA can see the old tables in Enterprise Manager but our applciation can't see it.
I'm thinking it might be a schema issue or the way that 2005 translate the odler 2000 SP4 database. Does anyone know, or have they run a back up on a older 2000 Server and then restored it to a 2005?

Help,I have a database that has a data file of 2GB and a log file of 31GB.In enterprise manager, when I choose shrink it says there is 30GB ofunused space. When I shrink the database, it does not shrink,(however it says it has completed).I've done a complete backup, tried shrink again, no dice. I thenbacked up the database (which the backup was 1.9GB), deleted thedatabase and made a new database with 2,048MB for the data and samefor the log file.When I restore, the log file jumps up to 31GB again. I'm trying to see the differences between Backup/Restore and Attach/Detach. I backup and detach a database from SQL Server 2000 SP3 and then attach and restore it to SQL Server 2005 SP1.
The differences I noticed are:
1. The restored database has a much larger initial size (database size is same) for data and log.
2. The attached database has a last backup date
3. If the backup is restored over a database, the restored database is showing owned by the database owner of the database restored over but syslogins and sysusers do not match.
I don't understand why #1 happens.
Are there any other differences between Backup/Restore and Attach/Detach?

I am attempting to restore the database from within VB.NET application I am making the following 3 calls:

using SMO. This logic works fine with small *.dat files, however when using *.dat file of about 4Gb I get an error on the 3d restore database call:

I'm working to test out a recovery scenario involving a SQL 2008 R2 2 node cluster. I want to restore it to a standalone server. The nodes are VMware VMs using physical RDM for the shared storage. Using Veeam as the backup tool. Veeam doesn't work with physical RDM so I'm dumping the databases (all Simple) elsewhere to be picked up and replicated with Veeam. No problem there. For my DR I have a vanilla 2008 R2 server being replicated so that I can use it as a base to restore SQL. So far the testing has worked ok. What I'm trying to learn is the best way to restore the cluster to the standalone server and have it look the same to the affected app servers.
The cluster has several instances. In my testing, I've recreated the instances, but I don't think they show up as they do on the cluster. For example, if the Windows server name is SQL01, and I install an instance called SQL-APP, SELECT @@servername while connected to the instance still shows SQL01 but in production it shows SQL-APP. What do I need to do to get everything to match up? I suspect that, while I haven't seen any problems, there could be something I'm missing that would manifest itself later.
Also, in testing, am I better off to delete the cluster server account from AD and join the domain with the DR server under the same name? (this is an isolated bubble so no impact on production).For the purpose of this scenario, assume all other required servers (DC, DNS, application, etc.) are present in the test environment as they would be in production and nothing requires resources outside the bubble. The only item affected is the SQL cluster.

I have 2 different servers that run nightly backup jobs to a network drive using the UNC format. I am noticing the larger databases encountering the following errors on a regular basis
Error: 18210, Severity: 16, State: 1.
'\fnfssql3SQLBackupsMNSQL05<database>.BAK'. Operating system error 64(The specified network name is no longer available.).
BACKUP failed to complete the command BACKUP DATABASE <database>. Check the backup application log for detailed messages.
There are 5 databases on this server all backed up by the same job and 3 of them wortk fine and 2 of them fail so it is not a permissions problem. Have there been any problems with backing up to a network drive in 2005?

I need help with the setup of my sql server express 2005 and more specifically, with the location of the database files. Normally, database files are located on the c: drive. In my situation, being in a high school environnement, I need to have the database files on the network drive ... lets call it g:drive. The reason why it cannot be on c:drive is because this drive is protected using DeepFreeze. Now, I was able to change the location of the new drive as I went into the properties window of the sql server instance but when I try to create this new database, sql gives me grief ;-|
I am from the group of people that thinks that to anything, there is a solution and am hoping that to this problem, there is hope of a solution.
Can anyone help?

I've been working with SQL Server for a few years now and I've had quite a few cases where users cannot backup SQL to a network location or external hard drive. Why can SQL not do this? Is it some limitation of the speeds at which SQL needs to backup the information and the external hard drives/network drives do not meet the requirements?

We are currently trying to restore a copy of our production database to a different server. Unfortunately SQL does not see the tape drives and we are not able to add them. The tape drives are installed and visible in device manager. I have updated all drivers and firmware but still no luck. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks
