Restore Master Database From 64bit Sql Server To 32 Bit Server

Jul 23, 2005

Hi,
We are planning to create a prod environment on our Dev server, by
creating a new named instance on DEV. Our prod server is running on
sql enterprise edition 64bit and dev on SQl enterprise 32bit.
Could we copy all the databases from prod server including
Master, msdb, model onto our dev server, and bring up all the databases?
Does Master store information about the version of SQl server?

Thanks for your help

SQL Server 2005 Master Database Restore To A Different Server

Apr 27, 2008

I have never done this in a DR scenario before. What I used to do in SQL Server 2000 was apply the logins to a new installation of SQL 2000 then recover the application databases. I'm using 2005 now and I'm in a different mode where I would like to be able to recover the system (master, model, msdb) to a different server with the same SQL Server 2005 build ---- 9.0.3054. I'm following the procedures from Microsoft where they state to place the instance in single user mode first then invoke SQLCMD then perform the restore. Sounds simple enough.
C:> SQLCMD
> RESTORE DATABASE MASTER from DISK = 'Z:MINIDRmaster_backup_200804200315.bak'

The console is coming back with a message that the backup set holds a backup other than the existing master database. So I suppose that this cannot be done and is only intended for recovery on the same instance.

Any input/experience is appreciated.

Thanks.

GO

I recieve the following error.

Restore Master DB To Another Server?

Jun 12, 2007

I have a full backup from ServerA. I then put ServerB in single user mode and try to restore the backup from ServerA. (both are identical servers but have different names)

[*- From command prompt using sqlcmd -*]

USE master
GO
RESTORE DATABASE master
FROM DISK = 'D:BACKUPSserverA.bak'
GO

Msg 3154, Level 16, State 4, Server MSSQL1, Line 1
The backup set holds a backup of a database other than the existing 'master' database.

Msg 3013, Level 16, State 1, Server MSSQL1, Line 1
RESTORE DATABASE is terminating abnormally.

Any ideas on forcing the restore through T-SQL? The restore works fine from a master backup from itself (ServerB).

Install 64bit SSRS On An Existing 64bit SQL Server Installation

Oct 2, 2007

We have a 64bit installation of SQL Server (SSIS, SSAS) running and working fine. There is a requirement to install 64bit SSRS on this existing setup.
The problem is: While running the SQL Server Setup wizard, the Reporting Services checkbox remains greyed out. In other words, there isnt an option to select SSRS for installation.
So the question is: Is it even possible to install 64bit SSRS on an existing 64bit SQL server installation - given that SSRS wasnt installed during the first pass.
PS: The SQL Server is SP2 on a Windows Server 2003 configured as an App Server.

Restore Master Database

Oct 20, 1999

I would like to restore the master database from a current backup tape but I got the error “Load database must be used in single user mode if trying to restore the Master database”. I tried to change the master database option but the option ‘single user’ cannot be changed for the ‘master’ database. Then I tried to start the SQL Server in Single-User Mode but I was not able to restore the master database from a tape.
Would anybody help me on how to restore the Master database like any other database?
Many thanks

Restore Master Database

Jan 18, 1999

Hello All,

I am going through the procedure of restoring the master database as described in the Microsoft SQL 6.5 Survival Guide by SAMS. I deleted the master.dat file from c:mssqldatamaster.dat. I went into setup and choose rebuild master database. After rebuilding the master database, I went into setup again to add the "-m" server option to start server in single user mode so I can load the master database from backup. Then I went into Enterprise Manager to start the server. The server started, but when I try to double click on the server. It gave me the following

" A connection could not be established to [server name] - SQL server login failed."

I try reregistering the server, but gave me the same error. The SQL server is using standard security.

Does anybody know what I did wrong?

RESTORE Master Database

Jan 8, 2002

Hallo

I do my backup using BACKUP database <myDB> TO DISK='D:BACKUPmyDB.bak'
I do this for ALL my databases every day.

Another product writes every day all the files on the server to tape EXCEPT the online databases because these files are open by SQL server 2000.

Now I restore the files of the tape to the server
This works well but I haven't got the online databases !!
And because the master database isn't available, SQL server wont start ...

BUT I have the backup of the master database 'D:BACKUPMaster_data.bak'

How can I use this master backup to do a restore even when SQL server can't start ?

Or must I do the bakup of the master database in another way ?

Restore Master Database

Apr 15, 2008

ALL,

When I attempt to restore a master database I am having some issues. I am using SQL Server 2000. I have set the start up option with -c -m to set the database in single user mode.

When I run the restore from enterprise manager I am get an popup window that is titled "SQL-DMo(odbc SQLSTATE:HY000)" with not message and then the database conection is lost. Thus the master datbase is appears to it was not resotred. As when I close enterprise manager and then restart the MSSQLSERVER service the database is in the same state.

Please advise on how i can get the Database restored.
Thanks

Restore Master Database After New Installation

Jul 11, 2001

Hi everyone,

HELP!

I was wondering if someone could help me. I need to re-install the SQL Server (due to a registry corruption). What I plan to do is to:

- Detach all databases (including master, pubs, and tempdb)
- Copy databases to a different folder
- Uninstall SQL Server
- Reinstall SQL Server
- Copy the databases back
- Reattach all databases

Will that preserver all the security? (e.g. syslogins and sysxlogins) Will using an old "master" database on a new install pose any problems?

Any help will be GREATLY appreciated. Please email me at vchai@artinmotion.com

Thanks,
Vincent Chai

Restore Master Database - Permisssions?

Nov 22, 2004

I have 2 database servers, 1 @ production and 1 @ DR site.

To restore the master database to DR on a regular basis, I have to rely on either the DBA or SysAdm to perform the restore. It's pretty expensive, as they have to dedicate some time to do so.

I'm exploring the possibility of getting the Data Centre staff to do this instead, as they are stationed at the DR site. Please advise the SQL permisssions required to restore master database.

We are running SQL Server 2000.

SQL 2012 :: Restore Master Database For A New Database?

Somehow the sharepoint farm is still trying to connect so I can't get logged in single user. What method could I use to stop users from connecting when I don't have access to the sharepoint farm.

SQL Server 2008 :: Master Database Missing

May 14, 2013

Wierd issue of a missing master database - wierd because I would have thought this was a newbie topic but I've found nothing for it. I googled and had a 'decent' look through this forum and only found a bunch of topics on 'how to restore master database'.

I wouldn't have thought I need to restore the master database because my SSMS works fine and I can query the master database. I can also see it in the drop down list of available databases in the Query Designer toolbar. The problem is just that I can't see it in the list of databases. I can see all the other databases I've created, and I can see the master database in the DATA folder. But not in the SSMS.

Is Physical Server Name Stored In The Master Database

Hi,We have a situation where we want to move our current databaseserver to a different hardware and rename the server. If we change the Physical server name, do we have to go thru the wholeprocess of changing it in sql server by running sp_dropserver,sp_addserver?Can we have an alias for the server name in DNS and can sql serverresolve the server name internally by going thru DNS?For eg: Our current database server name is FFSQL-PRD01. We have itregistered in EM as FFSQL-PRD01. Now we renamed the server toSTLSQL-PRD01, and added an entry in DNS for STLSQL-PRD01 with alias ofFFSQL-PRD01( the same old name as alias). After doing this when I goto EM and click on FFSQL-PRD01 would it give me an error? or can itresolve the server name by going to DNS.When you install SQl server the default instance has to be the physicalserver name, Why? Is the physical server name stored in Masterdatabase( SYSSERVERS table)? Thanks for your help.Geetha

I verified that:

service is running,

in surface area configuration: remote connections to local and remote are enabled, for TCP/IP and named pipes.

ran the command netstat -avn| findstr 49279 to make sure that the server is listening.

firewall is off, but this does not matter since I'm connecting locally to local instance

I'm using domain controller account to login to sql server / also tried the sa account.
what else can be wrong?

Can I Use SQL Server 2005 Driver For PHP On X64 2003 Server As 64bit Application?

Now I'm trying to run PHP web application on x64 2003 Server with Microsoft SQL Server 2005. The version of PHP is 5.2.3. and the web application should be run as 64bit applications. Since there seems no way to use php_mssql.dll on the environment, I'm trying to use SQL Server 2005 Driver for PHP but when PHP loads php_sqlsrv.dll, an error has occurd and there's a following message in an error log...

PHP Warning: PHP Startup: Unable to load dynamic library 'c:phpextphp_sqlsrv.dll' - %1 is not a valid Win32 application

From this message, I thought the distributed libraries for Windows would be for a Win32 environment but there seemed no information that says the libraries run on Win32 environment only.

I really appriciate if you help me.
Thank you.
