Restoring BAK File Sql Server 2005 Express
Apr 3, 2007
Hello Everyone,
I am trying to restore a bak file which came with code for a tutorial. I think it is safe to restore, but sql server 2005 express has the following problem when I try to restore it.
TITLE: Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express
------------------------------
Restore failed for Server 'BOBSQLEXPRESS'. (Microsoft.SqlServer.Express.Smo)
For help, click: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink?ProdName=Microsoft+SQL+Server&ProdVer=9.00.3042.00&EvtSrc=Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.Smo.ExceptionTemplates.FailedOperationExceptionText&EvtID=Restore+Server&LinkId=20476
------------------------------
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
System.Data.SqlClient.SqlError: The operating system returned the error '5(Access is denied.)' while attempting 'RestoreContainer::ValidateTargetForCreation' on 'C:Program Files (x86)Microsoft SQL ServerMSSQL.1MSSQLDashboard.mdf'. (Microsoft.SqlServer.Express.Smo)
For help, click: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink?ProdName=Microsoft+SQL+Server&ProdVer=9.00.3042.00&LinkId=20476
The links given for help have no information about the problem and I'm not really sure where I should be looking to solve this. I'm a newbie to databases so if you could provide a step-by-step answer that would be best. Thanks in advance.

SQL 2005 Express - Database Restore size problem
Was this post helpful ?
Hi,
I'm trying to restore a SQL Server DB Backup from a SQL Server DB Server on to my Laptop (SQL 2005 Express)
When I execute a restore filelistonly command on the backup file, It seems that the Database included is 1GB, but the Log file is 91 GB in size, which exceeds my diskspace.
I can restore the Data on its own without the log file, but the the Database stays in "restoring" mode. I've tried to switch the restore flag off (update sys.databases set state = 0 where name = 'G001'), but I can`t seem to be able to do it, even if I try to allow updates via:
sp_configure 'allow updates', 1
GO
RECONFIGURE WITH OVERRIDE
GO
Any ideas how I can restore the database without restoring the enormous logfile?
Thanks in advance...

Hi!
I'm a beginner w ith SQL Express and am having some problems. I am using 2005 SP1 and installed the SQL Server Management Studio Express as well. I have a backup from a SQL Server 7.0 database that I am trying to restore into my database using the management studio. When I try to restore from the file into my database, I get the error,
System.Data.SqlClient.SqlError: The backup of the system database on the device D:GMBeta2Local.bak cannot be restored because it was created by a different version of the server (7.00.1063) than this server (9.00.3033). (Microsoft.SqlServer.Express.Smo)
Is this true? Is there any way for me to get this data into my SQL Server 2005 express on my laptop?

I'm working on a restore procedure for the case where all MDF filesare missing, but the LDF files are all intact. A full backup is doneevery 24 hours, and a log backup is done every 3 hours. Afterrestoring the last full + log backups, is it at all possible to usethe LDF files to recover data from that point up to a newer point intime?I've found a post which explains how to do this on SQL Server 2000<http://groups.google.com/group/comp...s.ms-sqlserver/browse_thread/thread/3ef5c7cbc0a83334/f3b0c70811d35ed7>, but step 4fails with the following error message:BACKUP LOG cannot be performed because there is no current databasebackup.

i'm trying to set up one of the asp.net website starter kits and part of the process is to backup the sql express db and then import it into the sql 2005 at the web hosting account. it's not working and i'm wondering if there's any difference between the backups they make. the sql express makes a file with a .bak extension and the sql 2005 at the host makes a file with a .sqlbak extension. i was assuming that was just a naming thing and not a structural thing but the host's tech support has said:
"This sort of thing happens when the database being imported is not properly formatted. You can try downloading and using sql express from microsoft to see if you can do it manually, but most likely you will need to save your database again properly set for import to an mssql server rather than however you did."
all i had done was rename the .bak file from express to .sqlbak as that was the choice for backup files.
i will note that it also failed importing the .mdf, which works fine locally with the site but i did make some changes to it from the original that came with the starter kit.
should a backup file made with sql express (using sql management studio express, by right clicking on the file and choosing tasks > backup) normally be importable by sql 2005?
or, i suppose, does it make sense that a db that works fine locally with sql express (within a visual web developer express project anyway) would actually be "formatted" in a way that would cause it to fail to import into sql 2005?
thanks much for any assistance.

Hello,
Does anyone else ever experience this problem, and if so do you know what causes it:
When ever I restore a database called say XXX.mdf, it restores OK and I can view via MSE as XXX.mdf. Then when I visit MSE again there is another database called C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.1MSSQLDataXXX.mdf - both are linked to the same .mdf file, however if you try to expand XXX.mdf nothing happens as though the database has been detached?

We have a set of databases some are fully read-only others have read-only file groups, is there any way to restore backups of these taken on an MSDE 2000 to an SQL Express 2005 instance?
When doing the inplace upgrade we change these to read-write before the upgrade and set them back after the upgrade.
These databases are used in the field by customers althought the controlled upgrade requires a backup before (and blocks if it fails) and tries a backup after if the post upgrade backup fails (due to disk space) we might need to recover from this odd situation.
The only solution I have is install MSDE some place restore to this then do the controlled upgrade again, any other ideas?

Hi Guys, how many connections does sql 2005 express allow to .mdf file. I stumpled on info on a microsoft site (actually a forum post on msdn) that sql server express allows only a single connection to an .mdf file.
Iam intrested in this because i developed reporting services reports in BIS and iam having problems. If i run a report from report manager, i have to wait for close to 20 minutes before i can be able to run my asp.net application agian. Else if i insert data or retrieve data from my asp.net application, then i have to wait again for 20 minutes or more before i can be able to run my reports else i will get an error that a connection can not be made to the database or that the database is being used by another process.
So in all cases, i have to wait for 20--30 minutes before a connection can be made to the .mdf file. i.e after running a report or after inserting or retrieving data from the database through my asp.net application.
Iam using sql sever 2005 express with advanced services and visual web developer on windows server 2003.
Any ideas or help.

All --
Please help.
Is it possible to connect to MDF file without having SQL Server 2005 Express installed on the machine?
That is-- can one connect directly to an MDF in the same way and Access MDB file can be used?
If no, then is there any way around this?
If yes, then are there any limitations?
Please advise.
Thank you.

I am new to SQL Server, and migrating part of an Access application toSSE. I am trying to insert a comma delimited file into SSE 2005. I amable to run a BULK INSERT statement on a simple file, specifying thefield (,) and row () terminators. I can also do the same with aformat file. Here is the problem. My csv file has 185 columns, with a mixture ofdatatypes. Sometimes, a text field will contain the field delimiter aspart of the string. In this case (and only in this case) there will bedouble quotes around the string to indicate that the comma is part ofthe field, and not a delimiter. Is there any way to indicate that there is a text delimiter that isonly present some of the time?If not, any suggestions on getting the data into SSE?Many thanks for your input.Cheryl

I attached a SQL database called Cars, using the following code:
Code Block
IF NOT EXISTS(
SELECT *
FROM sys.databases
WHERE name = N'Cars'
)
CREATE DATABASE Cars
ON PRIMARY (FILENAME = 'C:DataServer FilesCars.mdf')
FOR ATTACH
GO
I then detached the database using:
Code Block
EXEC sp_detach_db @dbname = 'Cars'
,@skipchecks = 'true'
,@KeepFulltextIndexFile = 'true'
GO
I then copied the .mdf and .ldf to another folder, using Windows Explorer.
I then attached the database using the new folder name in my code.:
Code Block
IF NOT EXISTS(
SELECT *
FROM sys.databases
WHERE name = N'Cars'
)
CREATE DATABASE Cars
ON PRIMARY (FILENAME = 'C:DataNew FolderCars.mdf')
FOR ATTACH
GO
Now when I go to update my table, I see that I am hitting the .mdf in the new folder.
And, when I do my table updates, I see that I am hitting the .ldf in the old folder.
Two questions:
1. What did I do wrong, that updates are hitting the new .mdf, but the old .ldf?
2. How do I control what .ldf SQL Express uses?
I see references to 'SQL Server Agent' in the help pages, but do not see 'SQL Server Agent' within the application.
I see the reference to the old folder path, within the 'Database Properties Files page', but no possibity to edit the value.

Hello, I have correctly installed sql express 2005 onto my company server. I can connect to the sql express 2005 fine within sql management studio express. I can also connect to it the within visual studio 2005 server explorer. I have my database (MDF) on our server. I am trying to run my application within my client computer. I have changed the connection string property to connect to the server:
"Data Source=CTSSQLEXPRESS;Initial Catalog=UpdateAttributes;Integrated Security=True"
My program will only work if there is a local copy of MDF database located within my application directory. If I remove the local copy, it errors "No process is on the other end of the pipe" Is it possible to have my application without the local copy of the MDF? I thought the idea is to have the MDF on the server. Then my app would not have the MDF copy!?

I'm experienced using queries to extract data, but I'm new to actually creating tables, except through Access. I work with many records of data, so populating the data by hand is not an option. I created a test database (ValTest) and a test table within that database (ClaimTest). I created a text file (DataTest.txt) with the same layout as I defined for ClaimTest. I want to populate ClaimTest with the data from DataTest.txt. I was told the only way to do that using SQL Server Express was to use a utility called BCP. So I found a page on the Microsoft website talking about BCP. It gave some examples, so I opended up the Command Line window, pointed to the directory that contains the database and text file and typed "BCP ValTest.ClaimTest in DataTest.txt -T -c". I get 3 errors: Named Pipes Provider: Could not open a connection to SQL Server [2], Login timeout expired, and An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections.
I tried looking around and finding where I could change the settings, in case that was indeed the problem, but was unable to find anything. Does anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks

I want to store a Zip file as a BLOB, but I get an error:
"File 'C:<path of mdf file> ' appears to have been truncated by the operating system. Expected size is 2560KB but actual size is 1536KB "
whenever the BLOB exceeds 1MB.
Any suggestions? How can I store larger .ZIP files to the Database?
I am using MS SQL 2005 Express and the data type that I gave for the column to store Blob is "varbinary(MAX)".
I am inserting byte array in to this field.
It works fine for a zip file less than 1MB but as soon as the zipped file size increases beyond 1MB, lots of error pop-up and then the database is not readable. Its says that, the data in the data base may have been corrupted...

I seem to have a problem with one of my SQL Server Express databases. I started a restore task from a SQL Server 2005 BAK file (that included full-text data), which couldn't continue so I cancelled. Now, the database I attempted to restore to has the status "(Restoring...)".
This is a tiny database and a restore should (if it could) take only a few seconds.
I'm using SQL Server 2005 Management Studio (v9...).
Anyone know how to either cancel the restore or get the database into a good state again? I've tried stopping and starting (and restarting) the express instance, with no joy.

When I installed VS 2005, it installed the default version of SQL Server 2005 Express that ships with Visual Studio 2005 installer media.
How can apply SQL Server 2005 Express SP1 to update this existing instance?
Currently, if I run this query:
SELECT @@version
I get the following:
Microsoft SQL Server 2005 - 9.00.1399.06 (Intel X86) Oct 14 2005 00:33:37 Copyright (c) 1988-2005 Microsoft Corporation Express Edition on Windows NT 5.1 (Build 2600: Service Pack 2)
After applying SP1, I should get 9.00.2047.00.
Should I just go to this link and download & install the SQL Server 2005 Express Edition SP1:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/express/sql/download/
Thank you,
Bashman

When I try to restore my SQL Server 2000 backup file to a newly installed copy of SQL Server 2005 Express using Studio Express, I get the following error:
The backup set holds a backup of a database other than the existing 'UpperBridge' database. (Microsoft.sqlservfer.Express.smo)
The backup is made from an SQL Server 2000 database called 'UpperBridge'
I am trying to restore to a database called 'UpperBridge' which I created under 'New databases' in Studio Express.
Any help very much appreciated.

I'm trying to set up a BULK INSERT Format File for some data that I've been sent, which, according to the data documentation, comes in fixed-width format fields (no delimiters except for end-of-row 0D0A) in SQL-Server 2005 Express.
The following is the first line...
"7999163 09182003 56586 56477 3601942 1278 22139 1102 113 118 51450 1 1 63535647 10000
7999162 09182003 56586 56477 3601942 1279 22139 1102 113 118 51450 1 1 63535647 10000 "
Looking with a hex editor, all the above whitespace are 20's.
From the documentation, I've constructed the following table...
CREATE TABLE MQIC.DBO.ORDER_F
(
TRACER_ID NUMERIC (10,0),
DB_CREATE_DATE CHAR (8),
DB_UPDATED_DATE CHAR (8),
CREATE_DATE_KEY NUMERIC (10,0),
ORDER_DATE_KEY NUMERIC (10,0),
PATIENT_KEY NUMERIC (10,0),
ORDER_KEY NUMERIC (10,0),
PROVIDER_KEY NUMERIC (10,0),
LOCATION_KEY NUMERIC (10,0),
ORDER_TYPE_KEY NUMERIC (10,0),
STATUS_KEY NUMERIC (10,0),
PRIMARY_INSURANCE_KEY NUMERIC (10,0),
EXISTENCE NUMERIC (1,0),
DURATION NUMERIC (4,0),
NUMBER_OF_VISITS NUMERIC (3,0),
ACTIVITY_TRACER_ID NUMERIC (10,0),
AGE_KEY NUMERIC (10,0)
)
To Bulk Insert this, I've written the following...
BULK INSERT MQIC.DBO.ORDER_F
FROM 'E:MDataOrder_F.txt'
WITH
(
FORMATFILE = 'E:MDataOrder_F_format.txt'
)
and written the following format file...
9.0
17
1 SQLNUMERIC 0 10 "" 1 TRACER_ID ""
2 SQLCHAR 0 8 "" 2 DB_CREATE_DATE ""
3 SQLCHAR 0 8 "" 3 DB_UPDATED_DATE ""
4 SQLNUMERIC 0 10 "" 4 CREATE_DATE_KEY ""
5 SQLNUMERIC 0 10 "" 5 ORDER_DATE_KEY ""
6 SQLNUMERIC 0 10 "" 6 PATIENT_KEY ""
7 SQLNUMERIC 0 10 "" 7 ORDER_KEY ""

14 SQLNUMERIC 0 4 "" 14 DURATION ""
15 SQLNUMERIC 0 3 "" 15 NUMBER_OF_VISITS ""
16 SQLNUMERIC 0 10 "" 16 ACTIVITY_TRACER_ID ""
17 SQLNUMERIC 0 10 "
" 17 AGE_KEY ""
However... actually running this gives the following error...
Msg 4863, Level 16, State 4, Line 1
Bulk load data conversion error (truncation) for row 1, column 13 (EXISTENCE).
Msg 7399, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
The OLE DB provider "BULK" for linked server "(null)" reported an error. The provider did not give any information about the error.
Msg 7330, Level 16, State 2, Line 1
Cannot fetch a row from OLE DB provider "BULK" for linked server "(null)".
Since this is my first time with this, I read the BOL items on Bulk Insert, Format Files, and each of the formatting attibutes, and made up two line "toy" examples for SQLCHAR and SQLINT, including two columns - all worked as expected.
It seemed that only SQLNUMERIC/SQLDECIMAL fell apart.
Even the following trivial example doesn't work for this field of data...
"7999163 "
CREATE TABLE MQIC.DBO.ORDER_F
(
TRACER_ID NUMERIC (10,0)
)
and
9.0
1
1 SQLNUMERIC 0 10 " " 1 TRACER_ID ""
or
9.0
1
1 SQLNUMERIC 0 10 "" 1 TRACER_ID ""
which give this error...
Msg 9803, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
Invalid data for type "numeric".
The statement has been terminated.
or
9.0
1
1 SQLNUMERIC 0 10 "/r/n" 1 TRACER_ID ""
which gives this error...
Msg 4832, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
Bulk load: An unexpected end of file was encountered in the data file.
Also - there was the DB_CREATE_DATE and DB_UPDATED_DATE CHAR (8) were supposed to be dates in the format of mmddyyy but clearly there is no Date datatype in SQL-Server. I would suppose these need to be converted, but am unsure how. What is clear is that the data was dumped from Oracle in text form,
Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated...
Thanks!

(
TRACER_ID NUMERIC (10,0)
)
and
9.0
Also - the DB_CREATE_DATE and DB_UPDATED_DATE CHAR (8) were supposed to be dates in the format of mmddyyy but clearly there is no Date datatype in SQL-Server. I would suppose these need to be converted, but am unsure how. What is clear is that the data was dumped from Oracle in text form,
Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated...
Thanks!

(
TRACER_ID NUMERIC (10,0),
DB_CREATE_DATE CHAR (8),
DB_UPDATED_DATE CHAR (8),
CREATE_DATE_KEY NUMERIC (10,0),
ORDER_DATE_KEY NUMERIC (10,0),
PATIENT_KEY NUMERIC (10,0),
ORDER_KEY NUMERIC (10,0),
PROVIDER_KEY NUMERIC (10,0),
LOCATION_KEY NUMERIC (10,0),
ORDER_TYPE_KEY NUMERIC (10,0),
STATUS_KEY NUMERIC (10,0),
PRIMARY_INSURANCE_KEY NUMERIC (10,0),
EXISTENCE NUMERIC (1,0),
DURATION NUMERIC (4,0),
NUMBER_OF_VISITS NUMERIC (3,0),
ACTIVITY_TRACER_ID NUMERIC (10,0),
AGE_KEY NUMERIC (10,0)
)
To Bulk Insert this, I've written the following...
BULK INSERT MQIC.DBO.ORDER_F
FROM 'E:MDataOrder_F.txt'
WITH
(
FORMATFILE = 'E:MDataOrder_F_format.txt'
)
and written the following format file...
9.0
17
1 SQLNUMERIC 0 10 "" 1 TRACER_ID ""
2 SQLCHAR 0 8 "" 2 DB_CREATE_DATE ""
3 SQLCHAR 0 8 "" 3 DB_UPDATED_DATE ""
4 SQLNUMERIC 0 10 "" 4 CREATE_DATE_KEY ""
5 SQLNUMERIC 0 10 "" 5 ORDER_DATE_KEY ""
6 SQLNUMERIC 0 10 "" 6 PATIENT_KEY ""
7 SQLNUMERIC 0 10 "" 7 ORDER_KEY ""
8 SQLNUMERIC 0 10 "" 8 PROVIDER_KEY ""
9 SQLNUMERIC 0 10 "" 9 LOCATION_KEY ""
10 SQLNUMERIC 0 10 "" 10 ORDER_TYPE_KEY ""
11 SQLNUMERIC 0 10 "" 11 STATUS_KEY ""
12 SQLNUMERIC 0 10 "" 12 PRIMARY_INSURANCE_KEY ""
13 SQLNUMERIC 0 1 "" 13 EXISTENCE ""
14 SQLNUMERIC 0 4 "" 14 DURATION ""
15 SQLNUMERIC 0 3 "" 15 NUMBER_OF_VISITS ""
16 SQLNUMERIC 0 10 "" 16 ACTIVITY_TRACER_ID ""
17 SQLNUMERIC 0 10 "
" 17 AGE_KEY ""
However... actually running this gives the following error...
Msg 4863, Level 16, State 4, Line 1
Bulk load data conversion error (truncation) for row 1, column 13 (EXISTENCE).
Msg 7399, Level 16, State 1, Line 1

Hi All,
I have an issue that's stopping me restoring a database on SQL Server Express 2005 running under Windows Vista. I'm installing a system that I've used several times before on other systems and part of the installation procedure is to use the 'restore' function to install a database from a backup file. So I'm essentially restoring but to a db that doesn't yet exist in my SQL Server, this normally goes without a hitch. However on attempting this on a Vista system, I get the following error message -
System.Data.SqlClient.SqlError: The operating system returned the error '5(error not found)' while attempting 'RestoreContainer::ValidateTargetForCreation' on 'c:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.1MSSQLiCasework.mdf'. (Microsoft.SqlServer.Express.Smo)
where iCasework is the name I've given in the restore dialogue as the DB to restore to (which as I said, doesn't exist at the moment).
Things I've tried so far: -
I have a feeling this is down to a permissions problem, so I've tried the following already
1) Running Management Studio Express as Administrator - exact same error message
2) During the initial install, I set up the default admin user to use SQL Server authentication, having read threads about vaguely similar errors I used the Surface Area Config tool to add my windows login as an admin with admin rights and tried connecting to the Server with those credentials then running the restore - exact same error message
and
3) I also tried manually creating an empty db called iCasework and then restoring the external backup into that existing backup, which just gave a different error stating that the backup file didn't match the structure of the existing db. I could create the whole db structure manually but that would entirely negate the purpose of restoring from the backup and, more to the point, has never been necessary on any other system we've done this one.
Has anyone got any ideas that I could try next please?

i wanted to test routines using my local sql server engine and thought I could backup the mdf ldf file on the true network sql server in which I am listed as a dbowner with full permissions. In fact i can add users for the at db etc.The backup allows me to browse to a local folder
with the following being the default C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL10_50.CMS_PROJECTMSSQLBackup
i name the file and it executes properly but when i try to restore that file to my local db that path is not even visible to me.In fact when i use exploreer I cannot even find the folders after Microsoft SQL Server!I search for .bak but nothing. How can I see that folder construction in the sql browser but never in explorer -

I'm using SQL Server 2000 and need to restore a large database onto a different node. The problem is the original database has a 74 gb first datafile and the node where I need to restore it doesn't have a single drive that big. I'm trying to use a backup of the original database and restore it into an existing database on another node and am using the move options to put the files in the right places.
Is there a way I run the restore to split the 74 gb datafile across drives on my target node?
Thanks for any help.
