Restoring SQL7 Database From SQL 6.5 Backup
Mar 29, 2000I am trying to replicate a client's environment on my home development machine in order to develop some reports. At the client (SQL 6.5) I did a complete backup to a .dat file. How can I restore from this file into my home (SQL 7) server to create a duplicate database?? I tried restoring from a device, specified the file, but I get an "not a valid tape format ....." error. Help!

Apr 4, 2007Once a week a query is run against my SQL7 database. One month has passed and a backup of the database was restored. The database was restored as a seperate database from the active one.
The very same query was run against the backup, the results of the query were drastically different. What is worse the very same pattern that developed in the restored backup now seems to be affecting the active database.
Would restoring a database cause this sort of issue?

I have to move 2 fields from sql 7 to sql 2k .
the field is text.

field b is text.
I have to add field a and field b and move it to another field (say field c which is also text )in sql 2k.
How to go about it?

Jan 4, 2001I don't have any extra machines, so I'm thinking of evaluating SQL2K on one of my existing boxes with SQL 7 already installed. My experience is that SQL 6.5 co-existed extraordinarily well with SQL 7. Does the same apply to the SQL 7 / SQL 2K combination? Thanks!

Apr 16, 2001I am running a SQL 2000 server (Server A) on Win2000. I have a seperate server(Server B) running SQL 7.0 on NT6.0. When I attempt to create a linked server From B to A, I am unable to connect but I am able to create a linked server from A to B and connect( but I can go the opposite direction from A to B and connect). We have another server (Server C) that is running SQL 2000 and NT6.0. We can connect from B to C (so we are assuming that issue is not one of version compatability between versions 7.0 and 2000). The server Network configurations on all the servers are the same. The only difference is Win2000. Are there any other factors we may not have considered?

iam under process of upgrading sql7 to sql2000.
already i upgraded clients to sql2000. then i got problem with some of our applications to connect to sql7 server. then i replaced in clients new ntwdblib.dll with old one then it works fine. to overcome this problem shall i install MDAC2.6 on server, where sql7 is there.
Is there any problem to SQLserver7.0 with MDAC2.6 ? because i want to install MDAC2.6 on production server with sql7.0.

Removing Secondary DB Files - SQL7 To SQL2K
Feb 24, 2003I'm converting DBs from SQL7 to SQL2K; the previous owner & server issues had created secondary data and/or log files. The size of the databases, and the configuration of the new server, do not warrant those secondary files. In restoring the databases from SQL7 to SQL2K, either by detach/copy/attach or backup/restore, is there a method for deleting the secondary files without, of course, losing any data?!

Jan 23, 2007I have been sent a backup file from a supplier that I have been trying to restore. I have succesfully installed it on my SQL2K5 instance, however, we need to put it on our SQL Server in our DMZ . . . Which is running SQL2K . . . Supplier was informed of this and says that you can restore to a SQL2K DB as long as you use SQL Management Studio . . . Tried that and got an error message Saying That Restore Headeronly is terminating - Too many backup devices specified. . . only 64 are allowed. . . .Supplier suggests that its a SP4 issue . . . Installed SP4 and tried again . . . Got the Same Error again (SQL Server Error :3205)
Am I out of my gourd I am sure that restoring a SQL2K5 Backup to a SQL2K instance is not possible?
I should say that I am Running SQLExpress as my 2K5 Instance and MSDE as my 2K instance . . . Before I invest more time on this and trying it on a development server running Standard edition.

Summary: Basically, I made a daily automatic testing restore to TARGETSERVER and every database are ok except the master database. I do DBCC CHECKDB on master database in the SOURCESERVER .. and no error what so ever. But the result of restoring of the master backup does. This happens everday.

Login Problem After Restoring A Database In SQL7
May 17, 2004Since the database server was removed to a new Windows Advanced Server 2000, I restored a database from the backup file. When I tried to create a new Login under Security, I got the following error message:
Error 15023: User or role 'MyDatabaseLoginName' already exists in current database.
But I checked it and it doesn't exist. I even could not create a system DSN without the Login. Someone told me to create a new one with another name, but I do not want to change the connection string in my ASP files. Does anyone has any idea about it? Thanks in advance.

What are the impacts of compressed backup. Is there any problems with compressed backup while restoring the backup file.

I have two servers both have SQL7 and only one has a backup tape drive (which is my production database). I want to be able to backup to the tape and to the a share drive on the second server. The backup to the tape work fine but if I want to backup to share drive locate to the second server I can't see the share where I want to put the backup. Do you Know what I am doing wrong ?

Apr 15, 2002I had a number of jobs which were backing up system and user databases under SQL 7 using SQL ServerAgent. Over the weekend I upgraded SQL 7 to SQL 2K.
All backups work except for one, which gets the following error message: Executed as user: SANDIEGOSvcSQLServer. sqlmaint.exe failed. [SQLSTATE 42000] (Error 22029). The step failed.
As best as I know SQLSTATE 42000 is an ODBC message indicating a syntax violation or an access violation. I have recreated the maintenance plan in an attempt to rule out a syntax violation. During the upgrade process I did not change the account under which SQL Server Agent runs, so it seems like it should not be an access violation.
Any ideas would be appreciated!!!

Can Msdb From SQL2K Personal Edition Be Restored On SQL2K Standard?
Oct 12, 2007The company for which I work did not have a DBA until I started a few weeks ago. Whoever installed SQL2K used the wrong CD so they have been running Personal Edition on their servers. I have installed a new SQL2K standard instance and have restored everything except the jobs and DTS packages. Can the msdb from the Personal edition be restored to the standard instance?

Oct 11, 2001Hi Everyone, I was prototyping a DB and made a backup of all the files in the data directory of sql server, thinking that I would be able to restore the system from another installation when I made it to the US. I have the cd with the archives on and a full backup of the DB I want but I have no idea how to get sql server to initialise it.

Jul 24, 2004Guys, i've 1.6 GB of backup size and it takes 1 hour for this backup to get restored over a SCSII 10,000 rpm.
Is it normal. How can i make the restore faster.
It takes only 5-10 mins to take the backup however.
I am restoring the full backup, no differential or log file.

Mar 25, 2007I used backup and restore to upgrade a database from sql 2000 to sql 2005. Is it necessary to create the mdf and ldf on the new server at the time of restore under options or should I copy them to the new server in the data folder? I am new and not quite sure what the log files hold.

I am using SQL server 2000. When I want to restore a backup database from the disk. I use the Enterprise Manager tool to restore database. From there I checked Restore database and select from the first backup to restore. Do I need to backup the transaction log after? Or this does all of it?

I have a problem. I create a backup from a DB named Prueba (in full mode). But when I try to restore it in a new server the Prueba backup is loaded, and appear a message that said so. But in the DB list next to his name(Prueba) appear a "(Restoring)" ... The DB is not so big (i didnt know why is taking so long or whats the prblem) and i cannot do anything whit it because it doesn t show the tables or any info.
