Restoring Transactional Backups

Dec 17, 2007

Guys,

In 2000, if I need to restore Transactional backups I have to do it one by one followed by Full Backup or Differntial backups.

I am wondering is there any way I can restore all Transactional files in One Batch in SQL Server 2005?

Many Thanks

Transactional Backups "Err 4213"

Jun 19, 2001

Hi,

I have schedule daily full db backup at 2:00 AM and followed by transactional backups every 4 hrs. The transactional backup fails with error 4213 and 3013, informing "nonlogged updates and cannot be rolled forword". Perform full / differential db backup.

1. Is there any way to over come this problem ?.
2. Is there any way to identify that the nonlogged updates occurred, so that I can write a script to perform the full backup if any nonlogged updates performed.

Thanks,

Regards

Backups With Differntial && Transactional

Jul 14, 2004

Hi friends, Good Morning

Hey there is a question, i have two servers where replication is implemented, The two servers is used to take backup on dailybasis, on one server we take differential backup, and on second server we take transactional backup on same time, when we restore the backups on the opposite servers (backup taken on 1st server will be restored on 2nd server and 2nd server backup will be restored on 1st server)what are contents u find difference in the data

T-log Backups With Transactional Replication.

Feb 26, 2008

We have a system here using transactional replication and we are experiencing quite a bit of latency, I looked into it and ruled out the network. What I did see is that the transaction log is only getting backed up at end of day with thae full backup and it is currently at 33 GB physical and 99% used. I would like to implement more frequent transaction log backups but I am not very familiar with replication and I am not sure the proper way to do this.
Do I need to coordinate the backups of the transction log across both servers, are there any special considerations when setting this up?

FULL, Differential And Transactional Backups

May 12, 2008

Hi sql server experts.
This is a beginners question.

Let's say, I run a full backup at 4:30 am it takes usually 35 minutes to finish.

I want to schedule a differential backup to run every hour.

Should I start this job at 5:10 after the full backup finishes? or it doesn't matter?
I am confused about timing.

Let's say my full back up takes 1 hour to finish, that means that when the differential backup runs the full backup will be still running, so in case I need to restore the database, can I use this differential from 5:10 or the differential from 6:10.

Same issue with the transactional, the job runs every 30 minutes, should I started after the differential is done?

I am so confused, what happens with the backups jobs that run while other backups are running?

Is this something that should never happen.

Please advise.

Thanks

Backing Up And Restoring Transactional Replication

Dec 29, 2006

From Help

Transactional replication includes the sync with backup option, which can be set on the distribution database and the publication database:

It is recommended to set this option on the distribution database in all cases.
Setting this option on the distribution database ensures that transactions in the log of the publication database will not be truncated until they have been backed up at the distribution database. The distribution database can be restored to the last backup, and any missing transactions are delivered from the publication database to the distribution database; replication continues unaffected.

Does database will not be truncated until they have been backed up at the distribution database mean that the database itself needs to be backed up OR the log file with it?

Restoring Differential Backups

Feb 14, 2002

I am trying to set up a process where a differential backup is taken daily and applied to another DB. For some reason I cannot get the diff backup to restore. The full DB backup restored fine.

Server: Msg 3136, Level 16, State 1, Line 4
Cannot apply the differential backup on device 'diff' to database 'test'.
Server: Msg 3013, Level 16, State 1, Line 4
Backup or restore operation terminating abnormally.

Any suggestions? Thanks!

Error With Restoring Backups

Nov 1, 2006

I recieved 4 database's that were backed up from our client. They are using SQL Server 2000 and each of the files has no extension.

When attempting to restore a database of the same name in SQL Server Express 2k5 I recieve the following error.

System.Data.SqlClient.SqlError: The media set has 2 media families but only 1 are provided

Is there a way to restore the backup without the log backup?

Thank you

Error Restoring Database With Diff & Inc Backups

Sep 10, 2007

I backup a database at the begining of each month with a full and then do nightly diffs on it.

For the same database I run daily fulls and 10 minute log backups.

these two backups create / append to two different backup files.

The problem im having is that I cant restore the Differential backup set. SQL seems to restore the full just fine but alwasy throws an error when its about to start to retore the last diff. now forgive me but I clicked OK on the message and I cant find any record of the error in the logs but its something like:

"SQL cannot restore the database as the database has not been restored to the previous correct state"

is my 10 min TS log backups screwing up the DIff chain somehow?

this is really doing my head in. any help appreciated.

SQL Server Admin 2014 :: Restoring DBs From Files Not Backups?

Dec 1, 2014

Until yesterday I had a server running SQL Server 2008 R2 - with all the SQL Server DB files on an attached disk array.

The server died - so I attached the disk array to a new server - and all the DB data files are visible there.

I installed SQL Server 2014 on the new server and am trying to work out how to point it at the existing database files.

I also have backups of the DB's - but they will take ages to copy over and restore - so it would be much easier to just use the db files. Should I restore the master db first (easy as its small)?

Restoring 2000 Backups On 2005 With Read-only Db And File Groups

Mar 30, 2007

We have a set of databases some are fully read-only others have read-only file groups, is there any way to restore backups of these taken on an MSDE 2000 to an SQL Express 2005 instance?

When doing the inplace upgrade we change these to read-write before the upgrade and set them back after the upgrade.

These databases are used in the field by customers althought the controlled upgrade requires a backup before (and blocks if it fails) and tries a backup after if the post upgrade backup fails (due to disk space) we might need to recover from this odd situation.

The only solution I have is install MSDE some place restore to this then do the controlled upgrade again, any other ideas?

DB Engine :: Will Transaction Log Backups Not Free Up Log During Full Backups

Nov 15, 2015

The space allocated to the Log in question is 180 GB. During this time period I was running TLog backups every 5 minutes, yet the log continued to chew through to 80 GB used, even after the process was complete and a final TLog backup had been taken. It continued to stay very large until the Full backup was complete -- or something else that I'm unaware of completed. Like every other DBA I typically take a TLog backup to shrink the log, but what appeared to be the case here was the Full completed and it released the used log space. All said, will Transaction Log backups not free up the log during Full backups?

Restoring Database Leaves Me With (Restoring...) Message

Jan 9, 2007

I did a full backup of a db from one server(Express2005) and trying to restore it to a different instance of SQL2005 on the same development machine. (Also had some fulltext columns if that means anything)

Many failures but finally got it to report all was successful except the icon in Object Explorer shows (Restoring...) with no indication of any real activity going on. It's a tiny database with hardly any data in it.

Just not sure what the heck is going on there. It also won't let me into the database until this the (Restoring...) goes away.

Any advice on how to get this thing finished out?

Combining Peer-to-Peer Transactional Replication With Standard Transactional Replication

Dec 1, 2006

Hello,

I'm interested in combining the Peer-to-Peer Transactional Replication and Standard Transactional Replication to provide a scale out solution of SQL Server 2005. The condition is as follows:

We may have 10 SQL Server 2005 (1 Publisher + 9 Subscriber) running transactional replication in the production environment and allow updates in subscribers. To offload the loading of the publisher, we plan to have 2 Publisher (PubNode1 and PubNode2) using Peer-to-Peer Transaction Replication and the rest 8 subscribers will be divided into 2 groups. The subscribers 1-4 (SubNode1, SubNode2, SubNode3, and SubNode4) will be set to be standard transactional replication subscribers of PubNode1, and the rest 4 subscribers (SubNode5, ..., SubNode8) will be set to be standard transactional replication subscribers of PubNode2.

Is it possible to setup above 2 Publisher + 8 Subscriber topology?
Also, could we set the 8 subscribers with updatable subscriptions to achieve each node is updatable?

We do not plan to set all the 10 nodes using Peer-to-Peer Transactional Replication as it is necessary to make sure n*(n-1)/2 (i.e. 45) peer-to-peer connections is reliable. It seems that the maintenance cost is high if the servers are not in a LAN and the topology is very high coupling. So we prefer to divide the 10 nodes into 2 groups and reduce the cost of each node to maintain the connections to all other sites.

That's the scenario.

Any feedback is welcome and appreciated.

Thanks,
Terence

Transactional Replication

Jul 30, 2001

On my distribution server there is a directory called mssql7
epldataunc that houses the bcp, sch and idx files for replications. A directory is created for each publication. Most directories are empty but some contain all the table idx, sch and bcp files for the publication. Some of these files are over 6 month. Does anyone know if these files are neccessary to keep and why do only some publications have these files. I am wondering if they are kept when you push the publicaiton and it errors out originally and you have to restart it? If any one can shed some like on this I would appreciate it.

Transactional Replication

Feb 13, 2001

I have a problem with transactional replication in SQL Server 7. I have two databases (a publisher-distributor server and a suscriber server) and when I do an UPDATE in the publisher database the Log Agent Reader reads the UPDATE as an DELETE-INSERT and when the suscriber pull the suscription and try to do first the DELETE the transactional replication stops because of the Foreign Keys in the suscriptor database (that are the same as the publisher).
If anybody knows how to solve it, please tell me

Replication - Transactional - 7.0

Nov 1, 1999

I have two servers networked via workgroups (no domain) and am trying to install Transactional Replication. Everything appears to install correctly, but when I run the initial Snapshot Agent I get the following error -

The process could not create file 'CONCEPCIONC$MSSQL7ReplDatauncCONCEPCION_Erik_Rep lication_Erik_Replication19991029153207Employer.sc h'.
Access is denied.

The SQLAgent is starting with same user account on both machines - admin rights and the same password. I have added this user to the (
epldata) folder permissions as well. I even see a "Employer.sch" file in the directory.

What am I missing?

Transactional Replication

Hello,

I am planning to implement replication between two servers (either snapshot/transactional). Those two servers are physically connected but we don't have domain concept i.e we connected both servers physically and it can be pinked from each other, but not under any domain (not also under different domain). How should I register SQL server& agent services to start with 'Service startup Account'. In this case I cannot start both servers using same domain Account, they how can I relate...

Help... Transactional Replication

May 22, 2003

Hi guys can anyone help me with this issue. if so thankyou kindly.

1. created transactional publication (for tables, stored procs & views )
2. created empty database at subscriber
3. set up pull subscription at subscriber
4. ran the initial snapshot agent at the publisher
5. checked the schema files & found out it hadn't scripted the primary keys on the tables.

Problem: PRIMARY KEY AINT GOIN ACROSS, COULD ANYONE TELL ME IF IVE MISSED SOMETHING? THANK YOU MUCH APPRECIATED GUYS.

? Could it be that it is not picking up the primary keys on the tables because I am replicating stored procs and views with that publication?

? Should I break my publications into 3; say 1 for each object?

Thank you guys for taking the time to read this.

Hi,

I set up the transactional replication (immediate updating) using Central publisher with remote distributor method.

Transactional Replication

May 1, 2002

Hello all! I am setting up my first Replicated database, and want to get this right.

We are a Newspaper, and I will be Publishing the database that is the back end of the web server. The goal is to load balance the web site as well as to have a second identical server in case something goes wrong. Both the Subscriber and the Publisher need to be kept in sync as new articles are posted, so my client will just be updating the Publisher. But I'd like to keep a single set of usage statistics, so I was thinking of using Immediate Updating so the Subscriber can update the Publisher using two-phase commit.

What will happen if the Publisher shuts down and an update is attempted on the Subscriber? Will it just hang? Let's assume the worst - what if my Publisher is kaput? How do I determine that my other database is a Subscriber; and how do I stop it from being a Subscriber?

Thanks in Advance,

Transactional Replication

I am using transactional replication between two SQL 2005 databases. On Sunday evenings, we run a maintenance plan that rebuilds the indexes on the publisher DB. When the plan runs, the replication receives errors and cannot continue. The error appears to be at the publisher level. The publisher runs continually and the subcriber runs every 10 minutes. The error states "cannot run sp_replcmds" Other than Sunday, everything runs fine.
