Restoring A Database To A Different Server And Dealing With Table/db Object Ownerships

Jul 20, 2005

When I run:
select * from testtable

I get this error message:

Invalid object name 'testtable'.

However, if I run:

select * from testuser.testtable

It works. I'm logged in as testuser, and testuser is the database
object owner and tableowner. This was a restored database from a
different server in SQL Server 2000. The testuser login was in the
previous database. I created the same login in this new test database
and made it database owner.

I've also tried running: sp_change_users_login 'Update_One',
'testuser', 'testuser'

It completed successfully but I still get:

select * from testtable

Invalid object name 'testtable'.

I've also tried creating a different user and making it database owner
and when I change table object owner to this new user, I still get the
same problem. I need to specify:

select * from newtestuser.testtable

Even though I'm logged in as newtestuser.

I also then tried changing table owner to dbo. This seems to work
logged in as either user, but I want to have the tables owned by the
user not dbo. How can I resolve this?

Any help would be appreciated.

Object Ownerships Headache

Dec 10, 2005

This is more of an SQL server question than ASP.net.
A stored proc named MyStoredProc is created by admin account (sa) thus the owner of that proce is dbo.
When I log in to the database (Query Analyzer) as another login say User1, I can not use that stored proc since it was owned by sa. I get an error 'Invalid Object Name' or Object does not exist.
If I use the proper name qualifier like dbo.MyStoredProc, It works in the Query analyzser.
The problem I am facing is - My stored procedures, Views, Tables  were created by sa on the development machine. Now its time for deployment. On the deployment machine, I am not the sa. I just belong to the db_Owner role. I have to log in as User1 and not as sa.  In my c# code I have called the stored procedure as MyStoredProc. I get an error 'MyStoredProc does not exist' since I am loging in as User1 and not sa. In order to use the code, I have to change the ownership to this (and all other objects) to User1.
Is that the only way out or I am doing something wrong/missing someting? Your coments/opinions/suggestions welcome.

SQL Server 2008 :: Recover Data In A Table - Restoring A Database Alongside Existing DB

Apr 17, 2015

I need to recover some data in a table but i'm not 100% sure the right way to do this safely.

I'll need to query the two tables to compare the before and after but how do i go about restoring/attaching the backup database to SQL without causing conflicts?

If I restore, I assume this would just overwrite which is obviously the worst thing that can happen. if i attach the backup, how does this affect the current live DB? how do i make sure that it's not getting accessed and mistaken for the live DB?

The SQL server is 2008 R2 running as a VM.

Dbo.Table Of A Database In The .SQLEXPRESS Object Explorer: How To Copy The Dbo.Table To The Another Blank Dbo.Table?

Jan 9, 2008

Hi all,

The following dbo.Tables of Northwind.mdf in my .SQLEXPRESS (SQL Server Management Studio Express) are missing:
dbo.Categories
dbo.CustomerCustomerDemo
dbo.CustomerDemographics
dbo.Customers
dbo.Employees
dbo.EmployeeTerritories
dbo.Order Details
dbo.Orders
dbo.Products
dbo.Regions
dbo.Shippers
dbo.Suppliers
dbo.Territories.

But, I have these dbo.Tables in a different Database "xyzDatabase". How can I copy each of these dbo.Tables to the another blank dbo.Table of Northwind Database?

I right clicked on the dbo.Categories and I saw the following thing:
dbo.Categories
New Table...
Modify
Open Table
Script Table as |> CREATYE To |>
DROP To |>
SELECT To |>
INSERT To |> New Query Editor Window
File....
Clipboard
UPDATE To |>
DELETE to |>
From the above observation,I think it is possible to copy the dbo.Table from the one Database to the Northwind Database that needs to be repaired. Please help and advise me how to do this task or tell me where I can find the Microsoft document that gives the details of this X-copy thing.

Thanks in advance,
Scott Chang

P. S. I am using VB 2005 Express to create a project to learn "Calling Stored Procedures with ADO.NET" (see Paul Kimmel's article in http://www.developer.com/db/article.php/3438221) that needs the dbo.Tables of Northwind Database and my Northwind Database has been screwed up for quite a while and needs a big repair.

We give permission on store procedure for for the above account to execute .We dont give table level permission for the above account . When we run the application with the above settings it runs fine on test server . However Now i have transfered the databse object to live server with its permissions . Now while I executing the aspx page , I am getting above error . I have checked that the store procedure has execute permission for webuser account and dbo(i.e SA) has all the permissions for all database objects . Still why i am getting error ? There Is Already An Object Named 'IX_&<table&>' In The Database

Hi. I tried the following alter statement:

add constraint IX_userid unique (userid)

I previously created the same constraint in a different table (using IX_userid). Is it not allowed to use the same naming
scheme for constraints in different tables? What am I doing wrong?

Thanks.

Dealing With Null On Database Lavel

Feb 22, 2005

Hi
post a sample code
create table testNull(
a int not Null,
b varchar(5),
c varchar(5) )

insert into testNull (a,b,c) values(1,'Alex','test')
insert into testNull (a,b) values(2,'Alex2')

1. select * from testNull
-- return 2 rows
2. select * from testNull
where
a <> 3
and
b <> 'C1'
and
c <>'C2'
-- return ONLY 1 ROW !!!
3. select * from testNull
where
a <> 3
and
b <> 'C1'
and
isNull(c,'') <>'C2'

query 2 will retun only 1 row, because value of column c is Null

Question
Is any setting could be changed on db or server level to prevent errors with missing row in 2-nd query , or I have use isNull operator for every column acepting Null as value ?

Doing Math Across Table Columns, Dealing With NULL

Oct 20, 2005

Christine the Pharmacist writes "Please pardon as I am not horribly advanced with SQL...

Using SQL Server 2000, Windows 2000, Service pack 4

I'm trying to figure out marketshares for "preferred" products. I have a table put together by hospital and month of medication use with the totals of each drug dispensed in columns as well.
(example table below)

Hospital Month Drug A Drug B Drug C Drug D
A 7 5 10 58 73
B 7 NULL 26 98 43
etc.

** Drug C and Drug D are the preferred drugs

I'm getting correct preferred % in all cases except when a value is NULL (result is NULL). I'm using an aggregate (sum), which should ignore NULLs, but it ignores NULLs within a column, and not ignoring across columns. I've tried setting concat_null_yields_null off and I'm still getting NULL (since I'm using the plus sign).

This is my admittedly confused select statement, suspect this is where my problem lies (problems with saying "sum", but using "+" as well?):

select a.Hospital,a.month,convert(float,sum(c.Drug_C+d.Drug_D))/convert(float,sum(a.Drug_A+b.Drug_B+
c.Drug_C+d.Drug_D)) as preferred_share

Thanks for any advice!"

SQL Server Admin 2014 :: Restoring A Database Even If No Database Or Backup Encryption

So here I go "ALTER DATABASE AdventureWorks2012 SET ENCYRPTION OFF".I look at sys.databases : not encrypted.I backup using no encryption, I verify using msdb.dbo.backupset : not encrypted.

I move my backup to my other server where encryption was never configured (so no certificate, nothing...), and I have the error :

SQL Server 2014 :: Restoring Database Programmatically But Not Over Existing Live Database

Aug 6, 2015

I want to restore a database (from an encrypted .bak file) - but *not* over the live original if you take my meaning. Encryption is the standard AES-256 that comes with Sql Server 2014 btw. I don't want the original touched/altered in any way. I would like to capture a success message if possible.I can extract the physical device name of the database in question using the following code:

SELECT physical_device_name, *
FROM msdb.dbo.backupmediafamily
WHERE media_set_id =(SELECT TOP 1 media_set_id
FROM msdb.dbo.backupset
WHERE database_name='MyDatabase'
AND type='D'
ORDER BY backup_start_date DESC)

I would like if the newly restored database was rename to something different than 'MyDatabase' (as shown above) and has different logs than the original. If possible, and capture a success message when restored.

Restoring Database Leaves Me With (Restoring...) Message

Jan 9, 2007

I did a full backup of a db from one server(Express2005) and trying to restore it to a different instance of SQL2005 on the same development machine. (Also had some fulltext columns if that means anything)

Many failures but finally got it to report all was successful except the icon in Object Explorer shows (Restoring...) with no indication of any real activity going on. It's a tiny database with hardly any data in it.

Just not sure what the heck is going on there. It also won't let me into the database until this the (Restoring...) goes away.

Any advice on how to get this thing finished out?

After creating an instance of this class and populating it with data I need to be able to store this instance of my object in a sql server data base table. How do I do this? I saw an article that used the image data type to achieve this (code was in java unfortunately) is this the correct approach. Could you please give me some code examples

Which Database Object Is Updating One Table's Coumn?

Jun 6, 2006

Hi all,

We have sql sever 2000 as our backend database system. on the front, we have vb medical application screen for users to do the data entry.

for 7th screen, it is assoicated with table Case_Custom. user enter data througth 7th screen to populate Case_Custom table.

There is one column called Case_Custom.CaseID ( a foreign key to to parent table Cases) was populated automatically instead of user input.

However, I could not find which stored procedure, views or trigger or application code to populate this field? I have queried INFORMATION_SCHEMA.ROUTINES, dbo.syscomments and did not find anything updating Case_Custom.CaseID.

I have contacted our app vendor and have got any answer from them yet.

Any ideas?

DB Engine :: Migrate Table Data When Dealing With Constraints

Nov 19, 2015

I need to script out data in several tables (30+) and then reload those tables on a different database.  The "target" database table data will get overwritten each time, not appended to.  Several of these tables have numerous foreign keys and other constraints that must be dealt with.  None of them have more than 100 records or so.  Then I need to keep this script in source control and reference it as part of a post-deployment step with a Visual Studio DB project.

I have redgate, dbghost and visual studio.  Are there any tools will generate the script for me complete with dropping all the constraints, truncating the tables, then re-adding the constraints back?  Or, am I looking at simply scripting the table data out, then modifying the script myself to add in the steps to drop/readd the constraints?  Further, since some of these tables might have relationships, not just to other tables, but to those in question, there will likely be an order in which the tables need to get loaded.

The approach I am thinking will be needed, since ive done this sort of thing before except with SSIS, is to run something like dbghost or the "generate scripts" option in SSMS as a starting point.  From there, change the order around as needed, etc.

Database/Table Design Question - Object/Event Model

Dec 11, 2007

Hi,Facts:I created a database to support an application that tracks events ondifferent objects. The two main tables are tbl_Object andtbl_EventLog. Each table has unique ID and on the tbl_EventLog thereis FK for a record in the tbl_Object. The events are inserted all thetime for the same or different objects from the tbl_Object. There areabout 600,000 objects in the tbl_Object and 1,500,000 (and growing)events in tbl_EventLog.Question:The user often wants to know what the last event was for a specificobject. What is the best way of retrieving the last event?Should I simply do a max(eventdatetime) on a specific object? orShould I add a LastEventID column to tbl_Object and update it everytime a new event is inserted? or any other way to implement it?I chose the second method because I didn't think it made sense searchthe event table everytime the user wants to know the last event, but Iwanted to know what the experts thought. Please let me know what you think.Thank you,Oran Levin

Restoring A Database From A Different Server

Aug 30, 1999

Hi!
I attempted to backup a database on server x and restore it on a database on server y. The details are as follows.

Server X
Database name : dbx
Size :263.88MB (Unrestricted filegrowth option set)
Logical files : dbx_data, dbx_log
Physical files : e:mssql7datadbx_data.mdf, f:databaselogsdbx_log.ldf

Server Y
Database name : dby
Size :1MB (Unrestricted filegrowth option set)
Logical files : dby_data, dby_log
Physical files : d:mssql7datadby_data.mdf, d:mssql7datadby_log.ldf

I created a full database backup of dbx on server x at the location, f:ackupsdbx_083099_10.30AM. The size of the file is 272MB. I zipped the file. Copied the file, dbx_083099_10.30AM.xip over to d:ackups of server y. I unzipped the file at server y to the location, d:ackupsdbx_083099_10.30AMdbx_083099_10.30AM.

I now tried to restore this backup on server y using the statement,
restore database dby from disk = 'd:ackupsdbx_083099_10.30AMdbx_083099_10.30AM
with replace,
move 'dbx_data' to 'd:mssql7datadby_data.mdf',
move 'dbx_log' to 'd:mssql7datadby_log.ldf'

I get the following errors :

Trouble Restoring A Database To A Different Server

Sep 26, 2006

Hello everyone.
Pretty new to SQL Server and i've run into some trouble with something I am attempting to do.

Basically, we imported one of our databases on one of our SQL Servers to a new sql server that we just setup. That went ok with no problems. The DB is now in the new SQL Server.

Now, we need to copy the contents of a second DB from the original server into this new sql server DB. For reference:

We imported a DB Called: siebeldb
We want to import/overwrite another DB into that same DB. We backedup the DB and moved the file to the new SQL server.

So:

Import/Restore: sbprd01(a backup file) into siebeldb

I hope that makes sense.

I have the following command that I am trying to execute in the SQL Query analyzer:

RESTORE DATABASE siebeldb
FROM DISK='C:Documents and SettingsAdministratorDesktopsiebelprddb092509.bak'
WITH MOVE 'siebelprddb_Data'
TO 'C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQLDatasiebeldb_Data.mdf',
MOVE 'siebelprddb_Log'
TO 'C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQLDatasiebeldb_Log.mdf',
REPLACE

It is running right now, but seems to be running into errors. I just added the 'REPLACE' option according to the t-sql reference guide.

Does my script look ok? Am I doing anything wrong?

Thanks,.

Restoring A SQL2000 Database To SQL2005 On A New Server

Apr 23, 2008

If I restore a SQL 2000 DB into 2005 it upgrades it for me.
When restoring a DB to a new server/instance of SQL, in SQL 2000 I had to carry out the sp_changedbowner procedure after the restore was complete.
Is the equivalent procedure when restoring a SQL 2000 DB to 2005 to go to the schema for the restored database, find the schema with the name of the SQL 2000 db owner and change the schema owner?
OR alternatively run the following query where mark is the db owner in 2000 and lladmin in the new user in 2005 ;

ALTER AUTHORIZATION ON SCHEMA::mark TO lladmin;

GO
