Restoring Logs To A Database
Jul 20, 2005
Hi Gurus,
i am having problems with restoring a ms sql database.
i have restored the database using veritas to a different location
('g:datafiles') in no recover mode.
when i view the database through the Enterprise Manager, it shows the
database as silver icon (loading).
i go to sql analyzer, and put in the restore command
restore log myDatabase
from 'mylog'
with recovery
this produces an error
RESTORE FILELISTONLY
FROM jobs
Server: Msg 3206, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
No entry in sysdevices for backup device 'mylog'. Update sysdevices
and rerun
statement.
i look in master..sysdevices - no entry for mylog, but then no entries
for the log files for any of the other perfectly working databases
either.
i do have a copy of the log files ('c:logfiles') in another location
i would like the following help if possible:
* a way to update sysdevices with the log file i wish to apply to my
restored database so it will let my restore go through properly.
* a way to specify to use apply the logs in 'c:logfiles' without
having to give the restore statement a logical name for the log files
(which naturally won't be in sysdevices!)
pls supply transact sql
my thanks

(if wish to email please remove h from edwinah@)
p.s sp_add_log_file_recover_suspect_db will not work in a partially
restored database

I'm trying to configure log shipping When I retore the full disk dump of my databaseto my standby server, I need to be able to go in and drop and recreate several user logins(so they can do reports, read-only).
Once I do this though, I will be unable to restore T-logs, right?
Anyone know a way to get it back into a read only state and able to accept T-log restores? Thanks.

Hi all,
I am restoring database from Transaction Logs. I followed all the steps
mentioned in the book. Just before the last step there are three options
1. Leave Database Operational. No Additional Logs can be Restored.
2. Leave Database Nonoperational But Able to Restore Additional
Transaction Logs.
3. Leave Database Read_Only And Able To Restore Additional Transaction Logs.
Option 2 and 3 aresupposed to set on the NORECOVERY flag.
I tried both options 2, and 3 , But still got messages that I did not
specify WITH NORECOVERY or WITH STANDBY.
Can anyone please tell me what I am doing wrong?
Thanks in Advance.

Restart the restore sequence, specifying WITH NORECOVERY or WITH STANDBY for all but the final step. RESTORE LOG is terminating abnormally.

I have recently implemented a backup solution that keeps our standby server up-to-date with nightly database backup and restores. Ironed out all the problems with syslogins and orphan users. It's been working very well over the past few weeks.
On the production server we do hourly tran log dumps every hour between 8am and 10pm. I would like to implement some form of "log shipping" to bring the window of vulnerability down to 1 hour. By making some alterations to my current process I been able to incorporate the hourly log dumps in the same process.
However, when I try to restore the log on the standby servre I get the following message,
Server: Msg 4305, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
Specified file 'HODB1SQLBACKUPRace_Prd_T_dump.200101231513' is out of sequence. Current time stamp is Jan 23 2001 2:01PM while dump was from Jan 23 2001 3:01PM.
After a bit of investigation I found the dumptrdate field in the sysdatabases table and it was set to Jan 23 2001 14:01. After updating this field to Jan 23 2001 14:01, I ran the load command again but received the same error message.
Is there something else that needs updating on the standby server? Is what I'm trying to do possible in 6.5? Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Phill

When i am restoring the logs i start from the 1st backup buyt still i get this error. Can someone pls let me know what the problem is and how to resolve it. Thanks.

Hey all,
Just went through migrating to SQL 2005 as well and we have a need to apply log shipping between SQL 2000 and SQL 2005. Well not shipping per say in the automated fashion that SQL 2005 offers but rather we need to apply SQL 2000 transaction logs to a SQL 2005 instance. Though the database is still in SQL 2000 version 80 and the secondary database needs to be available in read only. (STANDBY MODE)
When I attempt to restore either a FULL backup or transaction log I get the error:
RESTORE DATABASE is terminating abnormally. This backup cannot be restored using WITH STANDBY because a database upgrade is needed. Reissue the RESTORE without WITH STANDBY
The only way I could restore the FULL was by using the WITH RECOVERY OR NORECOVERY option during the restore process. The issue with this is I need the database in standby by mode in order to continue to append transaction logs.
Anybody have any thoughts how I might be able to get around this?
Thanks
Eric

I did a full backup of a db from one server(Express2005) and trying to restore it to a different instance of SQL2005 on the same development machine. (Also had some fulltext columns if that means anything)
Many failures but finally got it to report all was successful except the icon in Object Explorer shows (Restoring...) with no indication of any real activity going on. It's a tiny database with hardly any data in it.
Just not sure what the heck is going on there. It also won't let me into the database until this the (Restoring...) goes away.
Any advice on how to get this thing finished out?

I did tried the encryption on server "A" for database "AdventureWorks2012". Then I tried to restore to server "B". There was the certificate issue, and I thought "of course : it's encrypted ! Let's deactivate it". So here I go "ALTER DATABASE AdventureWorks2012 SET ENCYRPTION OFF".I look at sys.databases : not encrypted.I backup using no encryption, I verify using msdb.dbo.backupset : not encrypted.
I move my backup to my other server where encryption was never configured (so no certificate, nothing...), and I have the error :
Msg 33111, Level 16, State 3, Line 1
Cannot find server certificate with thumbprint '0xFA130E58C999C4919B8975999C83A75A403B11D8'.

I want to restore a database (from an encrypted .bak file) - but *not* over the live original if you take my meaning. Encryption is the standard AES-256 that comes with Sql Server 2014 btw. I don't want the original touched/altered in any way. I would like to capture a success message if possible.I can extract the physical device name of the database in question using the following code:
SELECT physical_device_name, *
FROM msdb.dbo.backupmediafamily
WHERE media_set_id =(SELECT TOP 1 media_set_id
FROM msdb.dbo.backupset
WHERE database_name='MyDatabase'
AND type='D'
ORDER BY backup_start_date DESC)
I would like if the newly restored database was rename to something different than 'MyDatabase' (as shown above) and has different logs than the original. If possible, and capture a success message when restored.

I have a set of disks allocated for a high performance SQL implementation that will entail lots of large queries. My question is do I allocate more IOPS to the logs or to the database?
For example, if I have a 10 disk RAID 1/0 and a 4 disk RAID 1/0 available, which do I allocate to the logs and which do I allocate to the database? Which will require the most IOPS?
Thanks!

Hi,
In my case I have to log the errors raised by any task in a package to either windows event log, text file or SQL server. Also I need to send an email notifications to a group of people telling them about the error.
Now can I use SSIS package logging for logging the errors into the required destinations. I mean right clicking on the package and selecting Logging, then adding the required log providers and enabling the events for logging into those. I think I have to upfront select the log providers to log the error, I will not have the liberty to log the error to the destination, the name of which is passed as a variable to the package. This is okay with me though.
Now what will a custom log provider help me to do in this case. Also can I somehow configure my package to call the send mail task everytime an error is raised.
Also, one more option can be developing a package that only does the error handling. It will take in the paramters or the error codes and descriptions, the destination to write to and a flag to send mail or not for that particular type of error.
What do you think? Kindly advise.
Thanks in advance for your help and time.
Regards,
$wapnil

Hi,
I've got a sitatuation where one of our sql databases appears to be frequently "starting". The log entry looks like:
Starting up database 'Database'.
And seems to occur at irregular intervals and does not seem to be inline with any other db activity....i.e. transaction log backups, insertions or reads.
This DB is fairly busy receving inserts from our PBX CTI software almost constantly.
Note this is the only DB on the server displaying this behaviour (we've got two named instances running with several databases in each).
Any help / pointers appreciated.
Rgds,
SLE

Hi,
I need to write a reporting app that process daily IIS logs that are averaging about 299MB a day!
I am considering using SSIS to put the log data into a sql server 2005 database.
Has anyone done this? Or does anyone know if it is possible? And without using the MS LogParser?
Thanks in advance and any help greatly appreciated!

I have a Db that is 1.7 gigs. The table data takes approximately 200megs. The transaction logs were truncated. Where else can this large size be coming from and how can I confirm?
DB is generally small. ~25 tables, 100 SPs, 10 views, etc.
Note:
I have 4 queues using SQL Notifications, but when selecting from them results in no data.
Thanks

Hello.
Not an SQL admin. We have an SQL 2005 server that has about 5 DB's on it. One database is maintained primarily by a third party. Often when they need to do upgrades they login remotely to the desktop of our SQL server. Is there a way to apply permissions to specific databases like you would for NTFS? That way they can only backup their database and not do anything to any other databases? Thanks.

I have a Subscriber database updated using transactional
replication and want to create a copy for development & testing. The Distribution database is running on the
same 2005 instance as the Subscriber and the Publication database on another
server running SQL Server 2005.
If I use a TSQL script to run the restore, the database is
restored to a usable state but I get the following messages:
Msg 15247, Level 16, State 1, Procedure
sp_MSrepl_check_job_access, Line 112
User does not have permission to perform this action.
The replication agent job [job name] was not removed because
it has a non-standard name; manually remove the job when it is no longer in use.
(I€™ve removed the job name from the message)
RESTORE DATABASE successfully processed 46219 pages in
935.413 seconds (0.404 MB/sec).
It looks like an attempt is being made to restore
replication information too. I note that
the RESTORE statement has a KEEP_REPLICATION options which implies (I would have
thought) that by default the replication information is not be restored.
Incidentally, before implementing replication, backing up
the live database and restoring the backup to a new database took < 7
minutes but running the same process with a Subscriber database backup takes
about 15 minutes.
I€™d be interested to know if anyone has any idea what I€™m
overlooking or doing wrong.
ThanksTim

Hi guys, just wanna ask about the backup and restore database method. What's the best way for database and restore which able to view all the transaction logs after the database being restored. Currently I backup my database daily for recovery purposes. However, if I restore the backup file at another server and use SQL log application for viewing the prefer database's transaction log, it shows all the previous log had been truncated.
Therefore, I want to know is there any way that able to get the transaction logs after restore from a database backup file? Hope able to get any assistance here as soon as possible. Thank you.

I am running SQL 7 on two seperate NT4 servers, a production server and a standby server. Both servers are configured for Mixed Mode authentication. If I back up a database on the production server, do I also need to back up the master database and restore it. My reasoning behind this is that users' login details will be held in the sysxlogins tbl in the master, while their access rights will be held in the sysusers tbl in the database I am backing up and restoring. If I back up and restore a database without backing up and restoring the master db as well, will the connection between the system login and the database user be broken.
Any comments/suggestions would be appreciated.

Using SQL 7.0, has anyone backed up a database and restored on to a different database without the device files being moved around.
For example, With SQL 6.5 we used to backup PROD (source) database and restore to TRAIN (target) database. It worked just great regardless whether the databases are located on the same drive or not. We loved it and used it to refresh TRAIN from PROD on a weekly basis.(using sql Enterprise Mgr)
However, in SQL 7.0 when we attempt this procedure the database and log files of the TRAIN (target) are getting relocated to the drive location of PROD (source) database. Very strange.
Though thru object transfer i.e. import ,we can import data from PROD(source)
to TRAIN (target) database, but it is very slow and takes lot of time and performance degrades for source database (PROD)
Any input on above will be appreciated if backup / restore thru
enterprise mgr or TSQL procedure works in SQL 7.0 for restoring another database which is also on different drive i.e PROD (source) database on
drive C and TRIAN (target) database on drive E.
Thanks

While this may be in the wrong forum, I thought that I should try here first.
One of the developers that works for this company would like to restore a sample database to the SQL server after installing our software.
Is there a command line command that can be issued to restore/create a database with a file (.bak) of an SQL database (sample)? If this can't be done, can it be done with VBScript or something similar?
SQL is not my strong point, and neither is development. Any help would be appreciated.
TIA.
