Restoring Multiple Backup Files Simultaneously To New Server
Mar 5, 2007
Alright, here's the deal. I'm testing some backup/restore strategies, and hitting a (slight) sticking point.
We've got collections of database and log backups created by the usual maintenance plans on a 2000 Enterprise machine. I'm trying to run through a restore onto a new 2005 machine (Developer Edition on my test workstation) using the collection of .bak and .trn files copied from the 2000 server. When I try to restore to a new database on 2005 via SSMS, and select all the .bak and .trn files for the restore, I get the ol' "The volume on device '[trimmed]' is not part of a multiple family media set. BACKUP WITH FORMAT can be used to form a new media set." error.
I'm assuming this just means that SQL Server can't verify that these log backups are in fact part of a functional "set", even if they aren't part of a traditional backup media set. Is there any way to tell SSMS, "It's okay man, just restore the database from these files, in this order - trust me," or is the only solution restoring every individual log file one at a time? (Which seems to work fine, though is a tremendous pain with any more than a few log backups.) Seems like there ought to be a good one-shot method to restore a bunch of backups to a different server, and I'm just not finding it.

Hi,
I'm making backups of the database by first making a full backup and then differential backups. The differentials are backed up to separate files.
Restore of the full backup works fine, but I can't restore a differential backup. In Management Studio Express, I first do a full backup restore with option NO RECOVERY and then try to restore a differential backup. But this failes with the message:
"This differential backup cannot be restored because the database has not been restored to the correct earlier state."
Is it possible to restore a differential backup that is backed up to a separate file?

I have a backup that contains multiple databases. I am restoring it to a different server. How do I restore each database? Tried to restore under SQL Server Management Studio, but can only restore one of many from the backup (it appears it has only 1 logical file name in the backup) If you can refer me to a web page that would be great. I tried googling the topic but nothing seems to come up.

Hello,
I have 2 tables EmployeeA(Eng) and EmployeeB(Spanish) kept in seperate mdb's. I want to add the records into Sql Server 2005 table called StateEmployee.
Procedure:
1. Loop through 2 folders..one containing table EmployeeA in mdb and other containing tbl EmployeeB in diff mdb's.
2. Pick a file from EmployeeA and EmployeeB, both at the same time.
3. Count the total no of rows in both files. If equal proceed.
4. Compare the 'employeeid' of one row of employeeA to the employeeid of EmployeeB.
5. If employee id matches, load both the rows in Sql server else file it to the error table.
6. Loop through all rows simultaneously till end of row.
7. Go to next mdb.
How do i go about this step by step. I am fairly new to SSIS.

Hi,
I'm using ASP with a JScript variant and MSSQL Server 2000. I would like to write a script that basically erases all data except for a few things.
Is there a way to update multiple tables at once without having to write lines and lines of code? I tried UPDATE tbl1,tbl2 SET uid='asc', but to no avail. It gave me a syntax error. My thinking behind it is something like... UPDATE dbo.* SET uid='mferguson' and after that I can delete stuff like DELETE dbo.*... Any ideas?
I know the above is ASP, I've tried this thread in the ASP forum with no avail... they referred me to this forum.

We are currently using Crystal reports but are considering using SQL RS. We need to know if there is a restriction on simultanoeus access to the same report by multiple users? What happens when multiple users try to access the same report simultaneously? If reports can be accessed simultaneously, do the requests queue up or are they processed concurrently?
Any help on this issue is greatly appreciated.

I have the need to delete old backup files via TSQL job. Found this solution online:
PushD "
emoteservershareDIFF" &&(
forfiles -m *DIFF*.sqb -d -1 -c "cmd /c del /q @path"
) & PopD
It works remotely if I run it via command prompt. But when I add this to a TSQL job on my remote SQL instance, it runs without deleting anything. What I'm missing?

I recently was given control of an SQL server that stop working.
We had no past backups of the database and the only file we had was the .mdf
I decided to install a fresh version of SQL 2000 on another server and created a database using enterprise manager with the same name as my database called SWATraining
I then stop the sql server
the first thing that I notice is that the .mdf that enterprise manager created had _DATA at the end of the name. Thus I renamed the the orginal .mdf SWATraining_Data and
copied it to the
C:program filesmicrosoft sql servermssqldata
when I started SQL the database was greyed out and had (suspect)labeled
How can I recover the database when the only file I have is the .mdf file??
I even tried
sp_attach_single_file_db @dbname = 'SWATraining',
@physname = 'C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQLDataSWATraining.mdf'
but reason this error
Server: Msg 5172, Level 16, State 15, Line 1
The header for file 'C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQLDataSWATraining.mdf' is not a valid database file header. The FILE SIZE property is incorrect.

I want to create a database that is identical to one I currently have for testing purposes. I took a backup and tried to restore it to
another server to actually create the database. It wouldn't work, then I created the database on that server and gave it the exact
name and file layout (dbid was different) and tried to restore the backup to the newly created database. Still would not restore.
I am using SQL 7 for backkup and restore. The backup device backs up to disk on the servers. What I am doing wrong?

Until yesterday I had a server running SQL Server 2008 R2 - with all the SQL Server DB files on an attached disk array.
The server died - so I attached the disk array to a new server - and all the DB data files are visible there.
I installed SQL Server 2014 on the new server and am trying to work out how to point it at the existing database files.
I also have backups of the DB's - but they will take ages to copy over and restore - so it would be much easier to just use the db files. Should I restore the master db first (easy as its small)?

Hi,
I have used the backup tool in MS Access 2000.ADP many times
To make a nice backup of my adp Projects server objects(tables & data) that
I have in my MS SQL Sever 7.0 dBase. and then have successfully restored them back to the same computer that I have backed them up to. .
But now I need to transfer server SQL 7.0 DAT backup files over to two other types of computer setups..
I need to transfer these files and import or restore them onto another
computer that has MS Access 2000 and SQL 7.0 on a NT Server 4.0 platform and
also to a computer that has MS Access 2000 and MSDE on a win98 platform..
Have tried many different things but cannot seem to find a way to transfer or restore the SQL 7.0 DAT files to a different named dbase NT server with SQL 7.0 or to a win98 client with a named dbase on a MSDE file. the ADP client portion is just a simple file transfer but these SQL Server 7.0 DAT backup files... argh!
I am completely stumped even after trying many things and consulting the SQL
server manual.

Hi Gurus,
I am new to SQL server and I need your advise on the following .
1. We have two SQL 7.0 Databases at a distant location and we want to move those databases to our location.
2. we plan to take the SQL backup of the databases in tape ( 4Gb and 2 Gb in size) , bring them here, restore them to SQL 2000 server.
- Is this possible , DO SQL 7.0 backups are restored on SQL 2000 without any problems ?.
Also, we plan to take log backups of the DBs at the source after the initial full backups and apply them at the target SQL 2K databases till we cut over to the Target Databases.
Ehat would be the best method of doing this? All your suggestions , pointers to real life scenarios like this, solutions are welcome.
Please let me know if you need any more informations , before suggesting any solution.
Thanks in advance
-Jay

I am doing a complete backup on a sql 7 db and then doing a completerestore (with overwrite existing db) on a sql 2000 server. This is nowour hot standby server. I have the process automated and it worksgreat. The only problem I have now is the logins dont work.I have tried running EXEC sp_change_users_login 'Report', and thelogins appear. However, when I run EXEC sp_helplogins 'joe', the results are empty. So, I am guessing all I need is a sp that will re-associate my loginswith the correct db and grant the appropriate permissions. If anyone has any ideas that would be great.I have also considered doing a log ship instead of a full backup andrestore. Does anyone have any suggections or good examples of how tomake that happen?Thanx

Hi
In order to copy a database from a server to a server, I cant detach the database as there are many users connected to it. The transaction log is large file while the data is about 46 MB, I made a backup for the data file only, zipped it and copied it to the target server.
Ex: the name of the source DB on the source server is x, the file I took as a backup for is x-data
From the Enterprise Manager, right-click the x DB, All tasks, Backup database, in the backup option click the File and Filegroup option and chose the primary file group with x_data file.
Then, I created a new database name it y with y_data , y_log files on primary filegroup. I want to restore my backup to have the DB x on my target server,
I tried:
RESTORE DATABASE y
FILE = 'y_data',
FILEGROUP = 'primary'
FROM disk= 'E:VMSDBFiles est'
GO
But it did not work. Any help?
Thanks,

I've an emergency requirement to copy Source server database backup files to destination Server through xcopy command. Backup job on source server runs daily, so once this job get completes all databases backups needs to be moved to destination server. But here the main concern is "the backup files on destination server shouldn't be overwritten, they should be placed separately as Source server job runs daily".
We've a command which overwrites backups on destination server. But we need to keep backups on destination at-least for 4 weeks (means : retention should be 4 Weeks).

I gave myself all the permissions under the security tab fro the folder Microsoft SQL Server but still nothing.

Hi!
Is it possible to have both servers installed and not having issues?
I am really new to this.
At my company we have both installed. At home I created a backup of a database in SQL Server 2005 but can not restore it here were we have both.
The message I got is: System.Data.SqlClient.SqlError: The backed-up database has on-disk structure version 611. The server supports version 539 and cannot restore or upgrade this database.
So I think it seems that even though I'm trying to restore it in 2005 this version still uses the old server or something.
I hope I made it clear enough.
Please help.
Thanks.

Hi All
I have taken ownership of a SQL 7 Server that has many DB's with each DB's devices spread all over the 6 disks that exists in the Server.
e.g.
DB - Reference has
Data devices on D (20mb), E(40mb) , F(60mb) drives
and Logs having a similar spread.
Now what I want to do is to restore a full backup of the database into a new db but with only one data device and one log. So that basically the server is tidied up. The reason the devices are spread is not due to performance reasons.
The QUESTION IS : How do I restore a full back up of a db with many devices in to a NEW db with only 1 data device and 1 log device.
Thanks

I did tried the encryption on server "A" for database "AdventureWorks2012". Then I tried to restore to server "B". There was the certificate issue, and I thought "of course : it's encrypted ! Let's deactivate it". So here I go "ALTER DATABASE AdventureWorks2012 SET ENCYRPTION OFF".I look at sys.databases : not encrypted.I backup using no encryption, I verify using msdb.dbo.backupset : not encrypted.
I move my backup to my other server where encryption was never configured (so no certificate, nothing...), and I have the error :
