Need To Restrict A Login To See Only One Database

Feb 6, 2008

Here is what I need to do, maybe someone could tell me what to do.
I need to create a login (I got that part) and then limit that login to only be able to see one of the databases on the server. So this is what I'm looking for.

user1 logs in to the server
user1 can only see the database I want them to see
and can not see anything else, no msdb, no tempdb, no security, no management etc.
I also need this user to be read only (only able to run select statements)
and this user will not be the owner of the database

Please help i'm pulling my hair out

Thanks Ahead of time

Restrict Login Access By Hostname/ip Possible?

Oct 2, 2007

In SQL2005, is it possible to restrict incoming sql or windows authentication logins by source hostname or IP address? Perhaps using endpoints?

We are currently using hosts file on the db server as a temporary solution, but the SA will not allow us to use this as a permanent solution.

The app team I support is asking me to build an "idiot proof" database so that an Dev or Test app server they may configure, doesn't unintentionally connect to the Production database and damage/alter data.

Don't worry, I've already asked if they can't follow some kind of M&P's to prevent this kind of silly behavior, but they insist on DBA team creating a bullet-proof database that can outsmart app developers who try to attempt something dumb like this.

Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

TIA,
Phil

RESTRICT FILTERS BASED ON USER LOGIN

Jan 18, 2007

I am using a SSAS cube as my data source for my reports. I have set up the roles on the cube and that works fine.

However, in my reports I want to be able to restrict the report filters based on the user that logs in.

E.G. we have a list of users from different countries. if a user from the US logs in then the country filter should have only USA in it. If a Japan user logs in then the country list should have only Japan.

Currently, the country filter still has all the countries but the logged in user can only get data for his country. I want that list to only be populated with user country only.

I think it has something to do with the dataset that is populating the country list but I have no idea as to how to fix it.

Any help will be appreciated.

Can't Login With Localhost, But Can Login With &&<Machine Name&&>&&<Instance Name&&>, WHY?

Feb 26, 2008

Hello, when I setup Sql Server, I named my instance FIRE.

When I try to login to sql in .NET using a SqlConnection, opening the connection with:

"Data Source=localhsot;Initial Catalog=Database;Integrated Security=True;" fails, but if I use:

"Data Source=machineNameInstanceName;Initial Catalog=Database;Integrated Security=True;" it succeeds fine.

Does anyone know why this is so?

Thanks,

Connect To Remote Instance Of SSIS From SSMS Using SQL Login?

May 25, 2007

I have installed a SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition instance with SSIS on Window Server 2003 x64. From my PC, I am able to connect to the Integration Services on the server using Windows Authentication but not with a local SQL login - and the option to change authentication methods is greyed out.

Is it possible to remotely connect to SSIS using a SQL login rather than a Windows login? If so, any ideas or references for configuring it as such?

Thanks.

Intermittent Login/General Network Error Connecting To A Named Instance Of SQL 2000

Mar 27, 2008

Greetings,

I have a VB 2003 .NET application that I wrote for a customer that connects to a named instance of SQL 2000. Until recently it has been working fine. Lately the program either pops a timeout failure within a few seconds or a general network error. I've increased the connection timeout settings to 90 seconds but the error still pops within a few seconds. I'm thinking something has changed in the environment that prevents a clean connection to the named instance of SQL server.

How should this issue be troubleshoot to determine the problem and what areas need to be looked at?

Thanks

Recovery :: How To Find Last Login Date / Time For User DML Activity On Databases On Instance

Jun 22, 2015

How to find last login date/time for user DML acitivity on databases on Instance?

Is there any way we can find our the last login date/time for databases?

Note: 1. We can find if the SQL Trace is running and store. This is not good solution
         2. Audit logins off/on is also not good solution.
         3. Using DMV's also not good option, if reboot sql server instance then historical values can not see.

SQL 2012 :: AlwaysOn Avail Group - Prevent Login Direct To Server Instance Only Through Listener?

Sep 30, 2015

Is it possible to ONLY allow a login to the availability group listener, but block logins to server instance/nodes?

So: MySQLServerA and MySQLServerB are in an avail group "MyAvailGroup".

I want users to login to MyAvailGroup's listener, but I do NOT want them to login to the actual hosts/nodes directly.

Is that possible?

How To Restrict 100% CPU Hog User

Oct 5, 2004

I have an ETL product, every 30 minutes it loads maybe a coupla 100K records of various construction into an SQL Server Db (2000 SP3, on Win 2000 Std Server also Win 2003 Ent Server). It really hammers the Db with a combination of batch insert update and insert fallback to update etc. It does not use 100% CPU actually and is IO bound. Works a treat.

Now the problem, someone has built a .Net ADO based front end, and for the 5 minutes my product runs every 30 minutes they have a hope in hell of getting a reasonable response for their select queries. Now my take is that maybe I can delay for 5ms after each transaction I do to allow the other user processes a chance. But better maybe would be for my ETL product Db user to have a lower priority than other Db users.

What is the best way to achieve this end? If I understood more about how SQL Server prioritizes users and their requests it might help. (round robin?)

Thx.

David

SQL 2012 :: Clustered SSAS Unable To Connect To Named Instance (instance Not Found On Server)

Mar 20, 2014

I have a 3 node cluster on which I have installed SSAS as it's own insntance. I have created this as a named instance and can connect to it by serverinstance if I'm on the server itself. However from my desktop I get the error saying instance was not found on server name.

I have defined an alternate port and setup firewall rules and can connect via server:port but not serverinstance. Prior to making this change SSAS was running on default port of 2383 and I could connect just by servername.

I have read many articles for previous versions saying that clustered SSAS will always use 2383 and that you must connect just using servername. However and this is were it gets strange. I have a 2 node UAT cluster with SSAS setup exactly the same way I've described above and I can connect from my desktop as serverinstance.

Should I be able to connect as serverinstances for a named clustered instance in 2012 ?

Migrating From SQL2K Named Instance To SQL2K5 Default Instance

Feb 19, 2007

Hi, I have a task in hand to migrate (upgrade) from SQL2K named instance to SQL2K5 default instance. There are many intranet applications touching current SQL2K. I would like to perform this upgrade such that I don't have to touch any application code - meaning I don't have to change the connectionstring to point to new Default instance. How can I achieve this?

So, in otherwords, here is what I want to achieve:

Current Server: SQL2K: SERVER_AINSTANCE_A (named instance)

Upgraded Server: SQL2K5: SERVERB (default instance)

If I have both default, I could achive this by setting up DNS alias after migration done so that any call for SERVER_A would point to SERVER_B. But in my case, I don't have SERVER_A, I have named instance. Is there any solution?

Regards,

Vipul

Restrict Access To DB On SQL2K

Nov 12, 2001

Hi,

Is there a way to prevent new users from accessing a SQL2000 db (like to put it into DBO mode) while leaving current users finish their running jobs.

I tried Alter Database and sp_dboptions and both in SQL2000 requires to close all current users. It was working in SQL7 but not in 2000.

Thanks

How Can I Restrict Bandwidth Between To SQL Servers

Jul 23, 2005

HiI have two SQL2000 servers in different sites, once a day approximately1M of data in the form of a large update is required to be transferedbetween the 2. We have use of a 2M pipe between the servers but thereis no quality of service, the other users on the pipe are traders sothere must be no interruption in the quality of their bandwidth at anytime. Is there any way of throttling back the data transfer between the twoservers to restrict its bandwidth use. Obviously we want to retain themax bandwidth on our local network. The pipe is administered by a seperate company so we do not have adminaccess to their gateways, routers etc.. so a solution which we canimplement on our database servers would be the easiest.I am not sure if this is the right newsgroup for this but anyinformation would be greatThanksMark

How To Restrict Users To Particular Databases

Dec 16, 2006

While web hosting I use Sql Server 2000 as the database. Imagine I have hosted 3 Web Sites. All these 3 users want to modify/update their designs. What I did is I created respective 3 users having access to the respective databases only. So that they can registerd the ip and add to the Sql Server 2000 Enterprise Manager. These users are able to access their own databases only. But all these 3 users are able to access the default databases like master, pubs etc. How to restrict this.

Also suggest which is the optimal way to give control to the respective users while using Sql Server 2000.
