Would like to use the digital signature (i.e. PKI) from a smart card to authorize a PDF document. Is it possible to retrieve the PKI from Windows once its read in via the smart card using some sort of C++ or Java API call to apply it to the PDF form?

The client application allows the users to update a form.
I need to add to the database a digital signature for that user when they update that form. This is intended to be a replacement for a physical signature that would appear on a paper form.

Okay, admittedly, I am not really familiar with MS SQL Server (I€™m Oracle, actually) but I am investigating a possible implementation on a relatively small scale. I am sure that MS SQL Server will handle all the database functions I need and will leave plenty of room for future growth. That really isn€™t the issue. What I am trying to figure out is how the Digital Dashboard I€™ve read about works. Of particular concern is the apparent connection between the Dashboard and Share Point. My first question is this: Is Share Point required to use the Digital Dashboard?
My next question is actually a bit easier€¦ Is there a sample site I can access that shows some of the capabilities of a Digital Dashboard implementation? I€™d like to make sure that the kinds of displays I am trying to build are actually available using this feature€¦

This is my problem:
I am using a Web Service Task in Integration Services for access a Web Method, this method is not mine, it is a method provided for another company. This Web Method is published in a VPN (Virtual Private Network) and it is in a secured channel (https).
The properties of the Connection Manager that the Web Service Task uses are ok. The Server URL is the address of the asmx and the client certificate is the correct. In fact when I press Test Connection, the message Test Connection Succeed is shown. If I change the certificate, a connection error occurs (403 Forbidden), this means that the client certificate and the address is ok. I addition, I use this certificate to access another methods published by the same company in a Visual basic application (with WSE) and I don´t have problems.
When I execute the DTSX the error "403 Forbidden" occurs and I can't execute the method. I executed the DTS in the VS2005, SQL IDE and in a batch file (.bat) too, and the same error happened.
If I use the File Monitor tool (from SysInternal, that now belongs to Microsoft) I can see that when I test the connection (in the Connection Manager used by the Web Service Task), the process accesses the certificate's private key located in the RSA folder of my certificates. But when I run the DTSX (no matters which way), it never reads the private key, it only accesses the certificate repository.
I saw that the code of the DTSX includes the certificate in Base64, but I am thinking that this code doesn't include the private key (I don't know if it would have to do it)...
Well, the fact is that I can´t use this Web Service task. I am suspecting that is a bug of the Integration Service

Message Replication-Replication Merge Subsystem: agent 'job' failed. No signature was present in the subject.
I am using C# with RMO, merge replication.

I created sqlexpress database and .net app, everything was fine on my local machine.
When I moved the app to my server, I detached the database with SMSS express, moved the MDF file over along with the app files and I attached to the database with SSMS to make sure everything went over ok but when I try to open a table I get the error,
SQL Execution Error
Executed statement: Select x, x, x, x,x from tblFile
Error source: .Net SqlClient Data Provider
Error Message: Access to table dbl.tblFile is blocked because the signature is not valid.
I can open the stored procedures fine by choosing modify from the context menu.
Any ideas here?
I am currently developing a project that requires a server level permission for one stored procedure (ALTER ANY LOGIN)
To this effect, I plan to create a certificate, sign the stored procedure with it, import the certificate into the master DB and assign privileges.
I also understand that modification to the code invalidates the signature (after all thats the point of signing something).
But what about user defined functions and stored procedures referenced by the signed procedure? Does SQL server follow the dependancy chain and include referenced procedures in the signature? Or does the privilege assigned to the certificate not apply when the nested procedure is executed?
If this is not the case couldn't a restricted database user just alter a nested stored procedure they have been granted ALTER access to and make themselves SA or something?
So to sum up, do you have to duplicate the functionality of otherwise nested procedures into a certificate signed procedure to protect server security?

I have a user who's spell check always checks her signature - is there a way to prevent this? I know how to stop it on an individual email, but I want every email she creates to automatically NOT check the signiture file.

In the 70-461 objectives it says: Ensure code non regression by keeping consistent signature for procedure, views and function (interfaces); security implications...I think I understand what this means in general. They want us to be able to create a view that will still be able to call the original data even if the table is modified. In other words, the view table shouldn't easily be broken. ie, type a code that does NOT ensure non regression, then change the code so that it does ensure non regression.Â

I've been researching AWE to determine if we should enable this for our environment.
Currently we have a quad core box with 4 gb of RAM (VMware). OS: Windows 2003 std, SQL Server 2005 std. 3GB is not set but will be as soon as we can perform maintenance on the server.
I have read mixed feedback on AWE, either it works great or grinds you to a hault. I would assume that the grinding to a hault is due to not setting the min/max values correctly or not enabling the lock page in memory setting.
We only have one instance of SQL on the server and this box won't be used for anything else aside from hosting SQL services. We do plan on running SSRS off of this server as well.
1. Will running SSRS and enabling AWE cause me problems? Will I have to reduce the max setting by the SSRS memory usage or will it share and play nice?
2. How do I go about setting the Max value? Should it be less than the physical RAM in the box? Right now its set to the default of 214748364, even if I don't enable AWE should this default value be changed?
3. It seems that even at idle the SQL server holds a lot of memory and the page file grows. If I restart the process in the morning, memory usage in taskmon is at 600mb or so. By the end of the day, its up around 2gb. How can I track down whats causing this, should this even concern me?
4. The lock Page in memory setting worries me. Everything I've read on this seems to give a warning about serious OS and other program support degradation. In some cases to the point where they have to restore the settings on the server before they can bring it back up. What are your thoughts on this.

View 10 Replies View RelatedHello, I understand that we should use SSMS -> Server Properties -> Memory to put a cap on the SQL server memory usage, therefore it gives some space memory for OS, this is based on the fact if the max memory is not specified, SQL will use whatever available memory and eventually crash the system.
My question is that when a server has SSIS and SSAS services installed along with the SQL service. Would the max memory setting covers the SSIS and SSAS memory usage, or the SSIS and SSAS has to shared the memory with OS?

I am running Visual Studio 2005. I have an SSIS Package which is consuming a huge amount of memory. During the execution of the package the memory keeps increasing. Until finally i get an Out of Memory exception. I have run this package using dtexec, and in the BIDS. No difference. I do have some script components and have added some code to get the assemblies in the current appdomain. I do see that one particular assembly is increasing on every loop. VBAssembly every time it hits the script component is increasing by 6, and along with it the memory is climbing. What is this VBAssembly being used for is there an update to SQL Server Integration Services that I need?

sql server 2000 is running on windows server 2003 ... 4gb of memory on server .... 2003 was allocated 2.3gb nd sql server was allocated (and using all of it) 1.6gb for total of approx 4gb based on idera monitor software ... all memory allocated betweeen the OS and sql server .... then 4 more gb of memory added for total now of 8g ... now idera monitor shows 1.7gb for OS and 1.0 gb for sql server ..... 'system' info shows 8gb memory with PAE ... so I assume that the full 8gb can now be addressed .... why are less resources being used now with more total memory .... especially sql server ..... i thought about specifying a minimum memmry for sql server but i amnot convinced that would even work since it seems that this 1gb limit is artificial .... it it used 1.6 gb before why would it not use at least that much now ??

I am going to install SQL Server 2000 (then SQL 2K5) on a Win Server 2K3 with 8 GB of ram, but it will be 16 GB in the near future.
I would like to reserve a fixed memory (for momemt less than 3-4 GB) for SQL Server and the rest for application (virtualization).
Without AWE enabled, max memory for SQL Server 2K5 is 4GB as for SQL Server 2000?

So I started a new job recently and have noticed a few strange configurations. Typically I would never mess with min memory per query option and index create memory option configuration because i just haven't seen any need to. My typical thought is that if it isn't broke... They have been modified on every single server in my environment.
From Books Online:
• This option is an advanced option and should be changed only by an experienced database administrator or certified SQL Server technician.
• The index create memory option is self-configuring and usually works without requiring adjustment. However, if you experience difficulties creating indexes, consider increasing the value of this option from its run value.

I did a load testing and found the following observations:
1. The Memory:Pages/sec was crossing the limit beyond 20.
2. The Target Server Memory was always greater than Total Server Memory
Seeing the above data it seems to be memory pressure. But I found that AvailableMemory was always above 200 MB. Also Buffer Cache HitRatio was close to 99.99. What could be the reason for the above behavior?

How can I efficiently retrieve the top x managers within the top y regions within the top z states within the top q countries?
The only way I have been able to do this is to first find the top q countries, and store the list in an IN clause. Then for each of those, find the top z states and create another IN clause that contains the country+state concatenated. Then for each of those, find the top y regions and concatenate country+state+region. Then finally find the top x managers within this IN clause.
This works fine for a few hundred records, but once it reaches the thousands, it takes much too long. The final IN clause contains thousands of entries.
Isn't there a simpler way to approach this, especially with SQL Server 2005?
i am using a stored procedure, lets say spTemp, that calls sp_executesql within it. in the sp_executesql procedure i am passing parameters from the stored procedure 'spTemp'. i want to retrieve the result of the sp_executesql statement so as to perform further calculations in spTemp. is there a way of doing this?

My current backup strategy is to do a full backup 5 pm, differentials every 2 hours, logs every 30 min, all so they arenot simultaneous. Backing these all to same backup device via three different jobs.
Then the server is backed up to tape shortly after the 5 pm full backup.
Obviously, I can't restore from the backup for this situation because it would hurt other data.
But - is there a way I can take last night's backup from tape and restore it to a different database than our production database? (Such a database doesn't at this time exist. Would I detach, copy over the files, and then reattach on prod and attach on the devl side, and then restore from the backup device to the devl copy?)
I've never had to perform this kind of rescue and am wondering if my backup strategy is flawed since it isn't immediately evident how I can easily do this.
I needed a similar thing from our Oracle DBA yesterday, and he went to tape, copied out a table and put it on the Oracle database under a different owner, and I easily fixed the few records that I had botched.
That's exactly what I need to do now with MS SQL 2000.
