Say you have a table that contains 1000 rows, you create a simple select statement with a where clause that returns 100 or so of those rows. Easy enough.
Now, let's say that you wish to modify that select so that out of the 100 rows that match the where clause criteria, you only wish to return 10 rows randomly (i.e., you could run this query multiple times and get different results). How exactly would you go about doing this, efficiently?
I've thought about creating a stored procedure that will query the initial 100 rows into a temp table with an additional column (to number the rows from 1 to 100). Then setting up a loop (10 iterations) that will then generate a random number from 1 to 100 and select that row number into another temp table. At the end of the loop I'll have my table of randomly selected records. I am sure there is probably a better way to do this...

I need to randomly order the selected rows from my table. Is this better to do on the Application level or in a stored procedure using "orderby NewID()"?
Which is faster? There will be about 100 rows returned with 10 columns.

Hi every body,
I am making a program which is currently dealing with thousands of records.
What I want is to have a button in the front END which make me able to fetch only first 100 record.If the desired record doesn't come with in first 100 record I press this button another time to fetch next 100 records i.e. from 101 to 199.
How can it be possible in SQL Server stored procedure.
Eagerly waiting from all of you GENIUS people.

Hi,
I have the folowing 3 (SS2005) tables:
CREATE TABLE [dbo].[tblSubscription](
[SubscriptionID] [int] IDENTITY(1000000,1) NOT NULL,
[SubscriberID] [int] NOT NULL,
[Status] [int] NOT NULL,
[JournalID] [int] NOT NULL,
CREATE TABLE [dbo].[tblTransaction](
[TransactionID] [bigint] IDENTITY(100000000,1) NOT NULL,
[TransactionTypeID] [int] NOT NULL,
[SubscriptionID] [int] NOT NULL,
[Created] [datetime] NOT NULL,
CREATE TABLE [dbo].[tblMailing](
[MialingID] [bigint] IDENTITY(1000000000,1) NOT NULL,
[SubscriptionID] [int] NOT NULL,
[MailTypeID] [int] NOT NULL,
[MailDate] [datetime] NOT NULL
So for each subscription there can be 1 or more transactions and 0 or
more mailings, and the mailings are not necassarily related to the
transactions. What I am having difficulty doing is this:
I wish to select tblMailing.MailingID, tblMailing.MailDate,
tblMailing.SubscriptionID (or tblSubscription.SubscriptionID),
tblSubscription.SubscriberID, tblSubscription.Status,
tblTransaction.TransactionID, tblTransaction.Created, but I only wish
to retrieve rows from the transaction table where
tblTransaction.Created is the latest dated transaction for that
subscription.
I.E. (maybe this makes more sense..:) I wish to select all rows from
tblMailing along with each mailing's relevent subscription details,
including details of the LATEST TRANSACTION for each of those
subscriptions.
I am currently working along the lines of MAX(tblTransaction.Created)
and possibly GROUP BY in a subquery, but cannot quite figure out the
logic.
Any help appreciated.
Thanks, KoG

Not sure if this is the correct forum, but I 'm having problems retrieving a sqldatasource's asp:control parameter values from a selected row (during edit) in a gridview to update a record thru a stored procedure. The stored procedure is pretty intense, so I'd like to keep it in SQL if possible instead of creating the generic "update table set ..." that I see in most examples. It seems as if I can't get the propertyname right or something because it keeps giving me a "Procedure or function XX has too many arguments specified error". Maybe the DataKeyNames is not right?? I've tried just passing one parameter (ProductID-same as DataKeyNames) using "SelectedValue" as propertyname and still get the same. It's got to be something very simple, but I'm at a loss. All parameters are spelled the same in the sp (with an added "@" at start) as in the asp:controlparameters. Here's the gridview (asp.net 2.0 connecting to SQL Server 2005):
<asp:GridView ID="gvLoadEditProductPrices" runat="server" AutoGenerateColumns="False" AllowSorting="True" DataSourceID="SqlDataSource1" DataKeyNames="ProductID">
<Columns>
<asp:CommandField ShowEditButton="True" />
<asp:BoundField DataField="ProductID" HeaderText="ProductID" HeaderStyle-BackColor="white" InsertVisible="False"
ReadOnly="True" SortExpression="ProductID" />
<asp:BoundField DataField="Product" HeaderText="Product" SortExpression="Product" ReadOnly="True" />
<asp:BoundField DataField="ProductCat" HeaderText="ProductCat" SortExpression="ProductCat" ReadOnly="True" />
<asp:BoundField DataField="VarRate" HeaderText="VarRate" SortExpression="VarRate" />
<asp:BoundField DataField="loadid" HeaderText="loadid" InsertVisible="False" ReadOnly="True"

<asp:BoundField DataField="loadamount" HeaderText="loadamount" SortExpression="loadamount" ReadOnly="True" />
<asp:BoundField DataField="ProductCol" HeaderText="ProductCol" SortExpression="ProductCol" ReadOnly="True" />
<asp:BoundField DataField="PageID" HeaderText="PageID" SortExpression="PageID" ReadOnly="True" />
</Columns>
</asp:GridView>
and the sqldatasource's info:
<asp:SqlDataSource ID="SqlDataSource1" runat="server"
ConnectionString="<%$ ConnectionStrings:MARSProductEditor %>" ProviderName="System.Data.SqlClient" SelectCommand="spGetLoadEditProductPrices" SelectCommandType="StoredProcedure" UpdateCommand="spUpdateProductPrices" UpdateCommandType="StoredProcedure" >

Hello!
I would like randomly change the order of the rows in my table. Is there any way to do that? I also have a question about random generator. Is it possible to get a repeatable sequence of random numbers between 1 and 10 in T-SQL? (for example 2,7,6,5,8,9,3,2,....each state with the same probability). But i need the same sequence every time i run my procedure. I know this is just a pseudo generator. I tried to use function rand([seed]) and change the seed value, but I got some strange results...(floor(rand([seed])*100))
Thanx for any idea,
Z.

Hi!I'm a new T-SQL developer and just hit a roadblock.I have a scenario that goes like this: I have 2 stored procedures,spInner and spOuter. spInner has a SELECT statement which wouldnormally be used by a class using MS Enterprise Library and that outputgoes into a DataSet. However, I need to get the output of the SELECTstatement to go into spOuter and that's what I can't seem to figureout.I know I may be asked to use functions that return tables in replies tothis post, but I can't do that as some parts of my application have anEXEC(string) for dynamic SQL, instead of spInner.Any help appreciated.Cheers,N.I.T.I.N.

Hello,
I have an external process that polls message rows from a table. apon taking them, it also needs to mark them as taken. there is a status column in the table. marking messages as taken will change the value of status.
How can i perform both these operations in one command? Select the top x rows where their status is equal 1, then update the status of those same rows to a value of 5 for example.
I could iterate through the result of hte intial select and change the status 1 by 1 using a cursor, but this seems like a slow option.
Any other ideas?
Thank you.

Hi Guys!
This SQL statement, though carefully written to delete only selected rows, deletes the entire A_Shift_Times table:
DELETE FROM A_Shift_Times
WHERE EXISTS (
SELECT 1

Users
WHERE
(A_Shift_Times.time_in >= CONVERT(DATETIME, '2000-05-29 00:00:00', 102)) AND
((Users.User_Password LIKE N'mrr%') OR (Users.User_Password LIKE N'work%')))
What gives? What am I doing wrong here?

Recently I had an application developer approach me and asked if I could provided him with a list of sprocs by returned row count. We had an issue where the application passed in a number of parameters which attempted to return 200k plus rows of data and the application was timing out. He changed the required parameters in the application and a reasonable number of rows were returned as expected. Short term solution to this one problem.
However there are always timeout issues with this particular application and we got to thinking that maybe other sprocs that were called using parameters would also fail at some point in time because too much data was being returned.

I wonder if you can help...
I have a simple setup: 2 tables and a joining table, and want to retrieve a data set showing every possible combination of table A and table B together with whether that combination actually exists in the joining table or not.
My tables:
channels
======
channel_id
channel_name
items
====
item_id
item_name
channels_items (joining table)
===========
channel_id
item_id
created
An example of the dataset I want (assuming 2 items and 2 channels, with itemA not being in channelB):
item_id item_name channel_id channel_name exists
======= ========= ========== ============ ======
1 ItemA 1 ChannelA True
2 ItemB 1 ChannelA True
1 ItemA 2 ChannelB False
2 ItemB 2 ChannelB True
I'm completely stuck on how to achieve this. Any guidance would be very much appreciated.

Hi, can someone plz give me an idea of how to proceed with this...
I've got a server side cursor that retrieves a list of customers from a sql server table which match a specific criteria (those who have had orders in the yr 2000)
For each customer, I need to retrieve a list of 5 top items purchased along with dollars spent on each item by that customer.
I've tried to do this in a loop that uses a counter but probably my syntax was off and I'm not sure that this is better than a correlated join? Can someone show me a temlate of the appropriate syntax to use for this operation
I appreciate suggestions, thanks again.

Message:
Hi,
Suppose i execute a query,
Select * from emp,
I get 100 rows of result, i want to write a sql query similar to the one available in MySql database where in i can specify the starting row and number of rows of records i want,
something like,
select * from emp LIMIT 10,20
I want all the records from the 10th row to the 20th row.
This would be helpful for me to do paging in the front end , where is i can navigate to the next previous buttons and fetch the corresponding records.
I want to do something like in google, previous next screens.
So I am trying to limit the number of rows fetched from a query.
somethin like,
select * from emp where startRowNum=10 and NoOfRecords = 20
so that i can get rows from 10 to 30.
Has any1 done this, plz let me know.
Cheers,
Prashant.

The Above is my database, I need help in retrieving the X_Co and the Y_Co using values of rcv_A, rcv_B and rcv_C to compare with the Mean_A, Mean_B, Mean_C. The values of rcv_A, rcv_B and rcv_C are instances of values that are not exact of the mean columns , and we want is to compare it against our database and retrieve the row that is the closest to the rcv_A, rcv_B and rcv_C.
Here is an example of what i need. Let's say my rcv_A = 71, rcv_B = 73 and rcv_C = 70.8, so the row with mean value closest would be row 1, followed by row 2, then row 3.
So the result i hope to retrieve is in order of the closest value and i only need the X_Co and Y_Co.
This is what i want
