Retrieving Unique Rows
Jun 3, 2008
I have the following sql:
SELECT DISTINCT patient.patientID, patientFirstName, patientLastName, patientDOB, patientGender, completed_date
FROM patient
LEFT JOIN patient_record ON patient_record.patientID = patient.patientID
WHERE (sub_categoryID = 4 OR patient_record.allocated = 4)
AND (patient_status = 1 OR patient_status = 2 OR patient_status = 5)
GROUP BY patient.patientID, patientFirstName, patientLastName, patientDOB, patientGender, completed_date
This brings up duplicate records, my aim is to bring distinct records, now if I take out the other returned fields after patientID
and using the following sql:
SELECT DISTINCT patient.patientID
FROM patient
LEFT JOIN patient_record ON patient_record.patientID = patient.patientID
WHERE (sub_categoryID = 4 OR patient_record.allocated = 4)
AND (patient_status = 1 OR patient_status = 2 OR patient_status = 5)
GROUP BY patient.patientID
This bring up distinct results, but I need to retrieve the other fields from the database i.e. patientFirstName and patientLastName
Please can you help.

I'm trying to read from a table and return only the unique records from a table.
The table has 3 columns,
ID - Autoinc
Amount - decimal 6,2
Name - varchar(10)
If there are records like
ID Amount Name
1 0.03 Name1
2 0.07 Name9
3 0.05 Name3
4 0.03 Name8
5 0.07 Name4
6 0.06 Name7
I am wanting to retreive only records 3 & 6 (values 0.05
0.06) as they are the only ones where amount is unique i.e. only 1 entry in the table.
I put the following sql statement together which achieves this but it it only returns the amount value
select Count(amount),amount from bids group by amount having count(amount)<2 order by amount
So I then expanded it to read
select Count(amount),amount, name from bids group by amount, name having count(amount)<2 order by amount
not sure where i'm going wrong but the results returned were
0.03
0.03
0.05
0.06
0.07
0.07
Appreciate any help here.

I am working on creating a report which is retrieving data from a SQL 2005 database and being displayed in a C#.net web page. Presently, I am binding the dataset to a ASP:Gridview on the web page.
I am currently retrieving most of the needed fields using the following SQL statement:PROCEDURE [dbo].[pr_getReportTickets] @DateCreated nvarchar(15) ASBEGIN
-- SET NOCOUNT ON added to prevent extra result sets from -- interfering with SELECT statements. SET NOCOUNT ON;
-- Insert statements for procedure hereSELECT tbl_Queue.num_TicketNumber AS TicketID , tbl_Users.str_Name AS Technician , tbl_Queue.str_QueueLocator AS TechNTID , tbl_Queue.dat_ReceivedRequest AS dateCreated , tbl_Queue.dat_DueDate AS DueDate , tbl_Queue.str_TaskName AS TicketTitle , tbl_Queue.str_Requestor AS RequestorNTID --, I need most current dat_TimeStamp from tbl_Notes here for this record --, I need most current int_PercentComplete from tbl_Notes here for this record --, I need to sum up all of int_MinutesWorked fields from tbl_Notes here for this record , MasterEmp.dbo.fn_FormatFullName(tbl_employee.str_fname, tbl_employee.str_lname) AS RequestorName , tbl_Queue.str_TicketType AS TicketType , tbl_Status.str_TaskStatus AS TicketStatus , tbl_Severity.str_Priority , tbl_Complexity.str_Complexity , tbl_Severity.str_Priority + N' / ' + tbl_Complexity.str_Complexity AS Priority , tbl_Queue.dat_CompleteDate as DateCompleted
FROM dbo.tbl_Queue LEFT OUTER JOIN MasterEmp.dbo.tbl_employee AS tbl_employee ON dbo.tbl_Queue.str_Requestor = tbl_employee.str_ntid LEFT OUTER JOIN tbl_Users ON tbl_Queue.str_QueueLocator = tbl_Users.str_ntid LEFT OUTER JOIN tbl_Status ON tbl_Queue.num_Status_CD = tbl_Status.num_Status_CD LEFT OUTER JOIN tbl_Severity ON tbl_Queue.str_Severity = tbl_Severity.str_Severity LEFT OUTER JOIN tbl_Complexity ON tbl_Queue.int_ComplexID = tbl_Complexity.int_ComplexID
WHERE (dbo.tbl_Queue.dat_ReceivedRequest > CONVERT(DATETIME, @DateCreated, 102))
ORDER BY TicketType, tbl_Queue.str_Severity
I also have another table called tbl_Notes. This table contains an unlimited quantity of records for every “num_TicketNumber. This table contains the following fields: num_TicketNumber, str_TechRep, str_Notes, dat_TimeStamp, int_PercentComplete and int_MinutesWorked
I need to add two more fields to the query, but I do not know how to tell the SQL statement how to retrieve the data for the specfic record and inbed the fields into the Dataset being returned from the database to the web page.1) The first field I need is the most current recorded Date field from the tbl_Notes table for the each of the records returned in the above SQL statement. Similar to: SELECT TOP (1) dat_TimeStamp FROM tbl_Notes WHERE(num_TicketNumber = xxxx) ORDER BY dat_TimeStamp DESC2) The other field I need to return with the Dataset is the sum of the int_MinutesWorked for each of the tickets being retrieved. Similar to: SELECT SUM(int_MinutesWorked) AS TotalMinutesFROM tbl_Notes WHERE (num_TicketNumber = 49)

Hello,Currently we are in the process of implementing a sql server database where couple tables will have millions of rows ( about 98 millions and will grow) and a web site that will retrieve and sort the data ( read only). How asp.net gridview and sqldatareader act situation like that? Will it be a very slow response? Is there any alternative? Is there any example on the net?
Assuming tables are well tuned and well indexed.
Thank you in advance.

I wonder if you can help...
I have a simple setup: 2 tables and a joining table, and want to retrieve a data set showing every possible combination of table A and table B together with whether that combination actually exists in the joining table or not.
My tables:
channels
======
channel_id
channel_name
items
====
item_id
item_name
channels_items (joining table)
===========
channel_id
item_id
created
An example of the dataset I want (assuming 2 items and 2 channels, with itemA not being in channelB):
item_id item_name channel_id channel_name exists
======= ========= ========== ============ ======
1 ItemA 1 ChannelA True
2 ItemB 1 ChannelA True
1 ItemA 2 ChannelB False
2 ItemB 2 ChannelB True
I'm completely stuck on how to achieve this. Any guidance would be very much appreciated.

Hi, can someone plz give me an idea of how to proceed with this...
I've got a server side cursor that retrieves a list of customers from a sql server table which match a specific criteria (those who have had orders in the yr 2000)
For each customer, I need to retrieve a list of 5 top items purchased along with dollars spent on each item by that customer.
I've tried to do this in a loop that uses a counter but probably my syntax was off and I'm not sure that this is better than a correlated join? Can someone show me a temlate of the appropriate syntax to use for this operation
I appreciate suggestions, thanks again.

Message:
Hi,
Suppose i execute a query,
Select * from emp,
I get 100 rows of result, i want to write a sql query similar to the one available in MySql database where in i can specify the starting row and number of rows of records i want,
something like,
select * from emp LIMIT 10,20
I want all the records from the 10th row to the 20th row.
This would be helpful for me to do paging in the front end , where is i can navigate to the next previous buttons and fetch the corresponding records.
I want to do something like in google, previous next screens.
So I am trying to limit the number of rows fetched from a query.
somethin like,
select * from emp where startRowNum=10 and NoOfRecords = 20
so that i can get rows from 10 to 30.
Has any1 done this, plz let me know.
Cheers,
Prashant.

So if i have table with 9 rows i will get rows 5-8,
the first page is rows 1-4 the second page is 5-8 and the 3 page is row 9.
i have to assume that rows can be deleted form that table.

The Above is my database, I need help in retrieving the X_Co and the Y_Co using values of rcv_A, rcv_B and rcv_C to compare with the Mean_A, Mean_B, Mean_C. The values of rcv_A, rcv_B and rcv_C are instances of values that are not exact of the mean columns , and we want is to compare it against our database and retrieve the row that is the closest to the rcv_A, rcv_B and rcv_C.
Here is an example of what i need. Let's say my rcv_A = 71, rcv_B = 73 and rcv_C = 70.8, so the row with mean value closest would be row 1, followed by row 2, then row 3.
So the result i hope to retrieve is in order of the closest value and i only need the X_Co and Y_Co.
This is what i want
X_Co Y_Co

Is it possible to use the DISTINCT clause on just one field in the SELECT statement?
The following SQL statement causes an error:
SELECT DISTINCT appt.ref, appt.notes FROM Appointments appt
...because DISTINCT can't be used on the notes field as it of type 'text'.
How can I focus the DISTINCT keyword on just the ref field?
(I know ref is the primary key, so this example wouldn't need the DISTINCT keyword, but I've simplified a much more complex statement)

I want BetId 500 and 502 to be returned as result if i give select

Pls.Note: It should not return BetId 501 in the result, since it belongs to different combination(108,109,110).
Similarly if i give, select criteria where game id =(108,109,110) it should return
BetId 501.not the 500 and 502..which is different combination..

Hi,
I am trying to do a join which involves more than 3 tables. One is a parent table and the other two table have 1:n relationship with that parent table.
But duplicate records are being returned in the resultset. How do I eliminate duplicate records?
This is my query.
SELECT table1.* from table1 left outer join table2 on table1.id=table2.id
left outer join table3 on table1.id=table3.id
I tried doing DISTINCT here but with no success.
SQL with distinct clause.
SELECT distinct table1.id, table1.* from table1 left outer join table2 on table1.id=table2.id
left outer join table3 on table1.id=table3.id
This is the error I get:
The text data type cannot be selected as DISTINCT because it is not comparable
Please help.

Select DISTINCT a4 From Y ---> " 85 rows

I have a table in Access 2007 that has about 30 field names and I want to have a count of how many unique rows there are in each field. I want to have these results put into another table that will just have the field name and then the count of how many unique rows there are.
I have code in VBA that will loop through my SQL and change out the field name, but I can't seem to get the SQL right before I can start looping it. For just one field name this would be what I have to count the unique names...
So far I have this:
INSERT INTO newtable
COUNT(*) FROM (SELECT Raw_Table.FieldName, COUNT(Raw_Table.FieldName) AS CountOfFieldName
FROM Raw_Table
GROUP BY Raw_Table.FieldName);
And its not going too well.

IN THE PRODUCTION SYSTEM, THEREFORE, ANY SQL ASREQUESTED ABOVE WILL CONTAIN IN ITS WHERE CLAUSE (fldRuleAppliedID IsNULL)if exists (select * from dbo.sysobjects where id =object_id(N'[dbo].[tblTSCollected]') and OBJECTPROPERTY(id,N'IsUserTable') = 1)drop table [dbo].[tblTSCollected]GOCREATE TABLE [dbo].[tblTSCollected] ([fldCollectedID] [int] IDENTITY (1, 1) NOT NULL ,[fldEmployeeID] [int] NULL ,[fldLocationCode] [varchar] (50) COLLATE SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_ASNULL ,[fldTimeStamp] [datetime] NULL ,[fldRuleAppliedID] [int] NULL ,[fldBarCode] [varchar] (50) COLLATE SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS NULL) ON [PRIMARY]GOINSERT INTO dbo.tblTSCollected(fldEmployeeID,fldLocationCode,fldTimeStamp,fldBarCode)VALUES (963, 'VB001', '2005-10-18 11:59:27.383', 45480)INSERT INTO dbo.tblTSCollected(fldEmployeeID,fldLocationCode,fldTimeStamp,fldBarCode)VALUES (963, 'VB002', '2005-10-18 12:06:17.833', 45480)INSERT INTO dbo.tblTSCollected(fldEmployeeID,fldLocationCode,fldTimeStamp,fldBarCode)VALUES (964, 'VB001', '2005-10-18 12:56:20.690', 45481)INSERT INTO dbo.tblTSCollected(fldEmployeeID,fldLocationCode,fldTimeStamp,fldBarCode)VALUES (964, 'VB002', '2005-10-18 15:30:35.117', 45481)INSERT INTO dbo.tblTSCollected(fldEmployeeID,fldLocationCode,fldTimeStamp,fldBarCode)VALUES (964, 'VB003', '2005-10-18 16:05:05.880', 45481)INSERT INTO dbo.tblTSCollected(fldEmployeeID,fldLocationCode,fldTimeStamp,fldBarCode)VALUES (966, 'VB001', '2005-10-18 11:52:28.307', 97678)INSERT INTO dbo.tblTSCollected(fldEmployeeID,fldLocationCode,fldTimeStamp,fldBarCode)VALUES (966, 'VB002', '2005-10-18 13:59:34.807', 97678)INSERT INTO dbo.tblTSCollected(fldEmployeeID,fldLocationCode,fldTimeStamp,fldBarCode)VALUES (966, 'VB001', '2005-10-18 14:04:55.820', 97678)INSERT INTO dbo.tblTSCollected(fldEmployeeID,fldLocationCode,fldTimeStamp,fldBarCode)VALUES (966, 'VB003', '2005-10-18 16:10:01.943', 97678)INSERT INTO dbo.tblTSCollected(fldEmployeeID,fldLocationCode,fldTimeStamp,fldBarCode)VALUES (968, 'VB001', '2005-10-18 11:59:34.307', 98374)INSERT INTO dbo.tblTSCollected(fldEmployeeID,fldLocationCode,fldTimeStamp,fldBarCode)VALUES (968, 'VB002', '2005-10-18 12:04:56.037', 98374)INSERT INTO dbo.tblTSCollected(fldEmployeeID,fldLocationCode,fldTimeStamp,fldBarCode)VALUES (968, 'VB004', '2005-10-18 12:10:02.723', 98374)INSERT INTO dbo.tblTSCollected(fldEmployeeID,fldLocationCode,fldTimeStamp,fldBarCode)VALUES (977, 'VB001', '2005-10-18 12:05:06.630', 96879)INSERT INTO dbo.tblTSCollected(fldEmployeeID,fldLocationCode,fldTimeStamp,fldBarCode)VALUES (982, 'VB001', '2005-10-18 12:06:13.787', 96697)

SSIS 2005
Ok, I have a task in SSIS that does the following and works:
1) Brings in a txt file
2) Using a conditional component, checks for a value in the row.
3) Based on the value, splits the row into one of 3 tables (Header, Maintenance, or Payment)
Here is a print screen of what I have so far which splits Header rows into it's own table, Maintenance rows into its own table, and Payment Rows into its own table:
http://www.webfound.net/qst_how_to_add_header_PK_and_FKs.JPG
Here is a print screen of the conditional split:
http://www.webfound.net/conditional_split.jpg
Please take a look at the txt file here before it's processed:
http://www.webfound.net/split.txt
http://www.webfound.net/rows.jpg
Notice that the pattern is a header row, followed by it's corresponding detail rows. The detail rows are either Maintenance or Payment rows.
I need to somehow during the Script component or some other way, to assign a unique HeaderID (PK) to each of the header rows and add that ID to it's corresponding Maintenance and Payment detail rows in their corresponding tables as a PK. The problem is
1) I don't know how to do this in the flow of the components as I have it now
2) How do I tell it to create a new Header ID and Header FKs for the detail rows based off of each new Header row?
In the end (much later on in my entire package), the goal is to be able to run a stored proc to join and select the Header and Details rows back into a final table so I can then do more processing such as split each header and detail rows into their own txt files, etc....I don't need to go into details why but just know that this is the goal, therefore I need to relate each header row with their corresponding detail rows that are split off into a MaintenanceRow and PaymentRowTable
