Return Number Of Rows In Select Statement As Value

Sep 3, 2007

Can anyone just point me in the right direction.  All I want to do is add some T-SQL to an existing stored procedure to return the number of rows selected into a return value.

Does anyone know how to do this?

Sql Help With Number Of Rows Return Value

May 14, 2008

hi,i have a stored procedure like this in SQL server ,it returns proper value if data is there for a given id.But if there is no data,it returns row/rows of NULL value and that is counted towards "number of row returned"..Shouldn't it be like,if there are null values in a row, that row should not be counted towards rows returned value .?Rightnow if no value returned from either of the select,it still returns as 2 rows instead of 0 rows. How do handle this situation in SQL? thanks for your help
SELECT     SUM(col1) AS SUM_COL1, SUM(col2) AS SUM_COL2, SUM(col3) AS SUM_COL3, SUM(col4) AS SUM_COL4FROM         TABLE1WHERE     (ID = nn)     UNION all

Return Certain Number Of Rows

Apr 17, 2008

I have a Dataset that I am populating from a SQL Query. I am then using the dataset to populate a report in Reporting Services. What I want to do is return a standard number of rows in my dataset. (Let's say 10.) Even if my query does not have any rows in it, I want 10 empty rows returned to the dataset. If my query has 7 rows in it then I want to add on 3 empty rows and return it. I will not have more than the standard number of rows.
I cannot get the table in the report to show up if the dataset is empty, but still want the table to display with 10 empty rows. I have searched how to do this online but am getting nowhere. (I know how to add one empty row but not a set number.

SQL Server 2012 :: Create Dynamic Update Statement Based On Return Values In Select Statement

Jan 9, 2015

Ok I have a query "SELECT ColumnNames FROM tbl1" let's say the values returned are "age, sex, race".

Now I want to be able to create an "update" statement like "UPATE tbl2 SET Col2 = age + sex + race" dynamically and execute this UPDATE statement. So, if the next select statement returns "age, sex, race, gender" then the script should create "UPDATE tbl2 SET Col2 = age + sex + race + gender" and execute it.

How To Return Number Of Selected Rows From All Queries Performed On DB

Feb 20, 2013

Recently I had an application developer approach me and asked if I could provided him with a list of sprocs by returned row count. We had an issue where the application passed in a number of parameters which attempted to return 200k plus rows of data and the application was timing out. He changed the required parameters in the application and a reasonable number of rows were returned as expected. Short term solution to this one problem.

However there are always timeout issues with this particular application and we got to thinking that maybe other sprocs that were called using parameters would also fail at some point in time because too much data was being returned.

Select A Specific Number Of Rows

Aug 25, 2005

I am working on a multi-page datagrid that pulls data from a database. The issue I am running into is the SQL select query. What I have is a table to 55 items. What I need to do is grab the first 35 of those items and bind the resulting DataReader to the grid, print the page, then grab the remaining 20 items, bind to the grid and print the page.

I can use "SELECT TOP 35 FROM Table" to get the first 35 items, but I don't know how to get the remaining 20 items. Is there a way to say something like "SELECT TOP 20 FROM Table" but specify only the rows that begin after row 35?

I tried doing this with an ArrayList but couldn't bind it to the DataGrid.

Any suggestions?

Need To Return X Rows But Select Top Doesn't Work With Variable

Jan 26, 2006

I am writing some functions that work on a time series database of prices, ie volatility, correlation. I need to use the SELECT TOP syntax, but cannot do this with a variable, ie 'SELECT @x TOP * from prices'. My solution is to simply have a function for each potential period that will be looked at - 30day_volatility, 60day_volatility, etc. I looked at setting the ROWCOUNT variable but this is not allowed in functions. I haven't posted any DDL because I think the question is general enough - How do I return n ordered rows from a function without using SELECT TOP, or is there a way to use SELECT TOP with a variable that I am not aware of.

Thanks!

Return Variable Name As Part Of Select Statement.

ALTER PROCEDURE [dbo].[sp_SelectMostRecentArticle]

DECLARE @article_id INT
SELECT @article_id = (
SELECT TOP 1 article_id
FROM article
ORDER BY article_id DESC

DECLARE @comment_count INT
SELECT @comment_count = (
SELECT COUNT(comment_id)
FROM comment
JOIN article ON article_id = comment_article_id
GROUP BY article_id
HAVING article_id = @article_id
)

SELECT TOP 1 article_id, article_author_id,
article_title, article_body, article_post_date,
article_edit_date, article_status, article_author_id
article_author_ip, author_display_name,
category_id, category_name--, comment_count AS @comment_count

FROM article

JOIN author ON author_id = article_author_id
JOIN category ON category_id = article_category_id

GROUP BY article_id, article_title, article_body, article_post_date,
article_edit_date, article_status, article_author_ip,article_author_id,
author_display_name, category_id, category_name

HAVING article_id = @article_id

END
GO

as you can see, im trying to return a comment_count value, but the only way I can do this is by defining the variable.

I have had to do it this way, because I cannot say COUNT(comment.comment_id) AS comment_count or it returns an error that it cant reference the comment.comment_id.

But when change it to FROM article, comment; I get errors about the article_author_id and article_comment_id.

And i cant add a join, because it would return the amount of rows of the comment...

unless someone could help with what i Just decribed (as i would prefer to do it this way), how would i return the variable value as part of the select statement?

Cheers

Overloading Select Statement Return Values

Nov 14, 2007

Hey guys,

This is what I think and hope is a fairly straight forward SQL question

Essentially, I have a table which has the following columns that are relevent to my question:

PROJID
ACTIVITY_NAME
COMPLETION_DATE

Rows in this table are, for example:

PROJID ACTIVITY_NAME COMPLETION_DATE
1 Prepro 10/12/2007 3:42:30
2 Prepro 10/13/2007 9:16:27
2 QA 10/13/2007 10:00:01
2 Delivery 10/14/2007 09:31:12
etc.

So, really the key is the PROJID & the ACTIVITY_NAME (really, there's a unique column ID, but for this question, I'll leave it at that).

(Though this should be much easier to accomplish in code, the system is not built that way so) Is there a good way that I could return a status for a given PROJID based on whether a row exists for a given PROJID). In other words, ultimately, I would like to return something like this:

PROJID LAST_ACTIVITY
----------------------------------------------
1 Prepro
2 Delivery

where the activity order (in this case) is Prepro, QA, Delivery. So because a Delivery row exists for PROJID 2, then the LAST_ACTIVITY would return "Delivery" and because only Prepro exists for PROJID 1, the LAST_ACTIVITY returned would be Prepro

I really appreciate the help

Thanks,
Steve

Transact SQL :: Select From View In SSMS Doesn't Return All Rows

Jun 8, 2015

I am using SQL 2014 RTM (may be it's time to upgrade).

I have the following view:

create view [dbo].[SiriusV_Max4SaleList]
as
select m.id as Max4SaleId,
mt.[Description] as [TypeDescription],
CAST(m.[type] as tinyint) as [Type],
m.start_time as [StartTime],
m.end_time as [EndTime],

[Code] ....

I am thinking I may want to remove CAST for department, category, item later on as I don't really care if these columns would be defined as key for my EF model, but I do want to search by these columns. Anyway, this is my current view.

I executed the following select statement once

select * FROM dbo.siriusv_max4saleList where department like 's%' or category like 's%' or item like 's%'

And I believe I got 29 rows initially. However, when I execute this statement now I'm getting just 13 rows. If I execute just the department like 's%' I am getting 0 rows although I can see in the first result a row where department has s in in.

I guess I keep it here since I've created the message already but now I figured out why I am not getting the expected result. I used the condition like 's%' and not like '%s%' which application is doing.

T-SQL (SS2K8) :: Stored Procedure And SELECT Statement Return Different Results

I have a stored procedure on a SQL Server 2008 database. The stored procedure is very simple, just a SELECT statement. When I run it, it returns 422 rows. However, when I run the SELECT statement from the stored procedure, it returns 467 rows. I've tried this by running both the stored procedure and the SELECT statement in the same SSMS window at the same time, and the behavior is the same. The stored procedure is:

SET ANSI_NULLS ON
GO
SET QUOTED_IDENTIFIER ON

[Code] ....

When I do this in the same SSMS window:

exec mobile.GetAllMobileDeviceUsers

SELECT
ee.EmployeeID,
EmployeeName = LastName + ', ' + FirstName
FROM EmployeeInvData ee
--UNION

[Code] ....

I get two result sets. The first is 422 rows; the second is 467 rows. Why?

Select Statement To Return Most Current Syscreated Date On Duplicates

I have a db that has duplicate customer records.

If I run the following select statment against the appropriate table it returns the duplilcate records in the result set. However, from this list I want to add an additional select statement embedded into the query that will actually return only those records with the most current syscreated date.

Example of script I'm using---

select cmp_fadd1, syscreated, cmp_name, cmp_code
from cicmpy
where cmp_fadd1 in (select cmp_fadd1
from cicmpy
group by cmp_fadd1
having count(1) = 2)
order by cmp_fadd1,syscreated desc

The results is:

Address Syscreated date Customer
1622 ONTARIO AVENUE 2005-06-15 22:19:45.000 RELIABLE PARTSLTD
1622 ONTARIO AVENUE 2004-01-22 18:10:05.000 RELIABLE PARTS LTD
PEI CENTER 2006-01-05 22:03:50.000 P.G. ENERGY
PEI CENTER 2004-01-22 17:57:56.000 P.G. ENERGY

From this I want to be able to select ONLY those records with the most current syscreated date or those records with 2005-06-15 and 2006-01-05

Can anyone help me with creating this?

Thanks

Cyndie
