Left Join Table

Jul 18, 2006

Now I have a table with the table design as following :

table cst_EmpProfile
intEmpId nvcEmpName nvcEmpAddress intEmployeeType bitActiv
1 Peter Null Null true
2 Juli 1, xxxx 2 true
3 Sam Null Null False

table cst_EmpType
intEmpType nvcEmployeeType
1 Free Enginner
2 Manager
3 Operator

To join the table but MUST follow the condition as bitActiv = TRUE:
select emp.nvcEmpName, emp.nvcEmpAddress, ety. nvcEmployeeType from cst_EmpProfile emp left join cst_EmpType on emp.intEmployeeTypee = ety.intEmpType and emp.bitActiv = 1.

But, the sql statement doesnt output the my expected result.
Because the data row return must be 1st and 2nd row as it bitActiv = true.
So, how's I going achieve what i want. tq.

Format / Alignment

Feb 20, 2007

Does anyone else have this issue?

When making a report with VS2005, things get spaced out wierd and dropped down when deployed to the web?

I can't get things like images to position properly. Does it have anything to do with the fact that I am using a Matrix?

For example, I create an image and embed it, I have it all the way to the left of the form and when deployed it is more towards the middle of the page?

Very frustrating, just wondering if anyone has any tips/solutions.

Return All Results From Left Table

I have a table that lists states that I need to see order info from. I am attempting to create a SQL query that displays the production data for those states. So if the state is in my saleState table I want it to show in my query result even if there were 0 sales to that state. Below is the syntax I am trying, but if the count is 0, it is not returning the sales state it is omitting it.

Code:
Select a.state, COUNT(b.recordID)
From saleState a left outer join tblSales b
On a.state = b.state
And b.orderDate between '01/01/2012' AND '12/31/2012'

Need to point out the error in my query syntax?

Data Alignment In Textbox

Feb 26, 2007

Hi All,
I am working on a report, in this report a textbox is present, which is expected to show string. This string length is larger than what textbox can accommodate in single line. I want this textbox to show only right part of the string in case it can accommodate full string.
After using the right alignment I assumed it would do show, however it does not work like that. It always shows the left part of string in case, string is bigger than width of textbox.
Restriction from design:
1. Cannot increase the width of textbox.
2. Cannot use the Can Grow = true to show string in multiple lines.

Below is the example of my issue:
Say there is a string: "Microsoft SQL Server Reporting Services".
because the textbox width is not sufficient to see full string, I want to "Reporting Service". Which is of same size which column can accommodate. So I used Right alignment in textbox. however text box shows "Microsoft SQL Server". So, is there a solution to see required text in the textbox.

In Outter Joins, What Makes A Table Either Right Or Left?

Dec 16, 2002

Until today, I was always under the impression that left vs. right was determined by which side of the comparison operator the table was located.

In other words:
LEFT JOIN LeftTable.ID = RightTable.ID

would pull all the records from LeftTable and those that matched from from RightTable and that:

RIGHT JOIN RightTable.ID = LeftTable.ID

would pull exactly the same result set but I was wrong. So, if it is not the table position in relation to the comparison operator, is it simply that the tables listed first in the FROM clause aren the ones "Left" of those subsequently entered?

SQL Server 2008 :: Index Alignment In Partitioning?

Apr 1, 2015

I've yet to use partitioning in a production environment, and pretty much last ran any partitioning related code a few years back when looking at certification; so I'm definitely not an expert on the matter and only loosely clued up on the concepts.

I've recently started with a new employer, and they have just implemented a new system for sms messaging. The database tables tracking the sms messages being sent are going to get big and so they have created decided to implement partitioning on some of the tables using a partition scheme on the CreatedDate column; the DBA involved in designing the partitioning has left and I'm picking this up.

The relevant DDL for the table is below:-

CREATE TABLE [Message].[Sms](
[SmsId] [bigint] IDENTITY(250000001,1) NOT NULL,
[CreatedDate] [datetime] NOT NULL CONSTRAINT [DF_Sms:CreatedDate] DEFAULT (getdate()),
CONSTRAINT [PK_Sms:SmsId] PRIMARY KEY NONCLUSTERED

[code]....

There are some issues with the above that I will be addressing seperately (e.g. the clustered index should be unique as it contians the unique key, and the fillfactors are daft), but my concerns for this post are below.

1) How to define the Primary Key and enforce it's uniqueness whilst trying to ensure it's aligned with the partition in order to be able to switch out old data once an as yet undefined retention period has passed. In books online it states:- "If it is not possible for the partitioning column to be included in the unique key, you must use a DML trigger instead to enforce uniqueness. " Books online - Special Guidelines for Partitioned Indexes. However, I'm not sure what this means, nor how I create the primary key to use the partition function seeing as it doesn't have the CreatedDate in the unique key?

2) The original partition function was envisaged as the following:-

CREATE PARTITION FUNCTION [DateFunction](datetime) AS RANGE
LEFT FOR VALUES (N'2014-01-01T00:00:00.000'
, N'2014-04-01T00:00:00.000'
, N'2014-07-01T00:00:00.000'
, N'2014-10-01T00:00:00.000'
, N'2015-01-01T00:00:00.000'
, N'2015-04-01T00:00:00.000'
, N'2015-04-02T00:00:00.000'
, N'2015-04-03T00:00:00.000'
, N'2015-04-04T00:00:00.000'
, N'2015-04-05T00:00:00.000')
GO

There is a procedure that has been created and scheduled daily that will create a new partition for each day, and then merge these together at the end of the quarter. My understanding of partitioning is that this is a bad idea, as it will result in merging several populated partitions together. Is my understanding correct? If so, I'm planning on removing the day partitions at the end of the function, and simply adding quarterly partitions, maintaining a spare empty partition at the end of the table. Would this make more sense?

Reporting Services Parameters - Alignment. Here's The Problem :

Jan 31, 2007

Can we have more than 2 parameters displayed in a single row on report (when browsed using web browser). The parameters BY DEFAULT - seems to be lined up in an array of 2 columns, and N rows - which gets frustrating because so much of space is left blank (gray space just left of <View Report> button and to the right of parameters line-up).

How can we have more than 2 parameters displayed in one single row ? As this will help the actual report content to take up more space on the screen than the parametes taking up almost 1/2 of the screen.

Thanks a bunch for ideas.

SQL Server 2014 :: Left Join With A Large Partitioned Table?

Aug 3, 2015

I have a query that has a left join with a large partitioned table. The partitioned table has 10s of millions of records, and each partition has about 100,000 records.

The left join is part of an insert that gets a column from the partitioned table, if the column exists. The query contains the partition ID and all other joined columns are part of a non-clustered index.

Through the profiler, I found that there were millions of reads and the execution plan was giving me a table scan on the partitioned table.

I changed the query to do the insert followed by an update with inner join. That did the trick, but it worries me that SQL Server 2014 behaves differently from 2012 or 2008R2, which can make upgrading very time consuming.

Transact SQL :: Left Join To Get Info From A Table With Foreign Keys

Sep 13, 2015

I am still new to SQL and I am having trouble obtaining the results I need from a query. I have worked on this command for some time and searched the internet but cannot seem to still get it correct.

I have a table called Patient. It's primary key is pat_id.

I have a second table called Coverage. It has no primary key. The foreign keys are pat_id, coverage_plan_id, and hosp_status.

I have a third table called Coverage_History.   It has a primary key consisting of pat_id, hosp_status, copay_priority, and effective_from.

I want to get the pat_id and all the coverage information that is current.   The coverage table contains specific insurance policy information.   The coverage_history table will indicate the effective dates for the coverage. So the tables could contain something like this:

Patient (pat_id and lname)
P123  Monto
P124  Minto
P125  Dento
P126  Donto

Coverage (pat_id, coverage_plan_id, hosp_status, policy_num)
P123     MED1   OP   A1499
P123     ACT4   OP   H39B
P124     MED1   OP   C90009
P124     RAC    OP   99KKKK
P124     RAC    OP   99KKKK
P124     MED1   OP   C90009
P125     ARP    OP   G190
P126     BCB    OP   H88

Coverage_History (pat_id, hosp_status, copay_priority, effective_from, coverage_plan_id, effective_to)
P123   OP   1   20150102  MED1    NULL
P123   OP   2   20150102  ACT4    NULL
P124   OP   1   20150203  RAC     20150430
P124   OP   2   20150203  MED1    20150430
P124   OP   1   20150501  MED1    NULL
P124   OP   2   20150501  RAC     NULL
P125   OP   1   20150801  ARP     NULL
P126   OP   1   20150801  BCB     20160101

select p.pat_id, p.lname, ch.coverage_plan_id, ch.hosp_status, ch.effective_from, ch.effective_to, ch.copay_priority,
       from patient p
     left join
  ( coverage_history ch left join coverage c on ch.coverage_plan_id = c.coverage_plan_id and ch.patient_id = c.patient_id and
                                   (ch.effective_to is NULL or ch.effective_to >= getdate()
)
         ) on ch.patient_id = p.patient_id

    where ( ch.effective_to is NULL or ch.effective_to >= getdate() )

So I want to see:

P123  Monto  MED1  OP   20150102    NULL       1
P123  Monto  ACT4  OP   20150102    NULL       2
P124  Minto  MED1  OP   20150501    NULL       1
P124  Minto  RAC   OP   20150501    NULL       2
P125  Dento  ARP   OP   20150801    NULL       1
P126  Donto  BCB   OP   20150801    20160101    1

All columns are covered by index's but the queries at the end take quite a long time. I would hope for index scan to just point out the missing rows especially on the final query.

Left Join Vs Left Outer Join Syntax Generates Different Execution Plans

Apr 16, 2008

Anyone know why using

SELECT *
FROM a LEFT OUTER JOIN b
ON a.id = b.id
instead of

SELECT *
FROM a LEFT JOIN b
ON a.id = b.id

generates a different execution plan?

My query is more complex, but when I change "LEFT OUTER JOIN" to "LEFT JOIN" I get a different execution plan, which is absolutely baffling me! Especially considering everything I know and was able to research essentially said the "OUTER" is implied in "LEFT JOIN".

Any enlightenment is very appreciated.

Absolutely Page-bottom Alignment On Report Footer: Impossible?

Mar 21, 2007

Relative newb to SSRS here, but the answer to this question evades me; answers and insight are appreciated.

Report in question is an invoice form. It requires an absolutely bottom-of-page aligned footer that has databound elements.

This is so that whatever page that footer finally appears on will print in such a way that the address will align in a windowed envelope.

Ironically, Books Online gives this exact scenario in explaining headers and footers in SSRS, but they cleverly don't explain how an absolutely bottom-of-page-aligned and data-bound footer can be made to happen. Headers at absolute page top is obviously no problem. Footers at page bottom, not so much.

So, this is not a "page footer"--page footers are employed in the body. Also this footer is databound, so a page footer as it's known in SSRS is out the window anyway.

Most of the time this will print on a single page, but if it breaks to multiple pages, that footer needs to go all the way to the absolute bottom.

I grasp that the "report footer" for SSRS is just what appears at the end of any repeating controls that you've implemented in your body. Because SSRS uses this kind of repeating-control based idiom rather than a section-based idiom as Crystal does, this kind of (what I would consider very basic) positioning control is looking fairly impossible right now.

Among what I've tried:

--Page footer (can't; databound)

--Specifying a page break after the pre-footer controls, and/or a page break before the controls that make up the footer in their properties. This leads to unpredictable results with blank printed pages (as many as 8 for what previews as a 2-page report, how silly is that?).

--Putting in a page-height rectangle as part of the footer (with and without the page breaks mentioned above), with the idea of forcing a basically blank page at the end of the report so that the footer will go to the bottom. SSRS will go ahead and break the page anyway on long elements like that, which again leads to the "footer" being printed in the middle or top of the final page, or whereever it happens to fall.

I may be having to explain to my client that you can't get there from here, and they may have to redesign their report. Does anyone have any insight?

Thank you for your time in reading this.

Three Table Join - Display Newest Comments Left On Photos Created By Members

Jul 6, 2014

I am trying to tweak some code which is used to display the newest comments left on photos created by my members.

The existing code is this:

SELECT top 15 pnumber, pcomment, puser FROM photocomments order by pdate DESC

So the latest comment left was for photo #210879 from user "Cla" (redacted user names). The 2nd newest comment would be for photo #211072 from a member named "mo". pdate is a date field

However for the script I have coded I don't want all of the photo comments to show up. This is because I use access levels based on the type of location (higher levels mean more restricted galleries). I check the access levels as I go through the recordsets.

I use this method to get the top 15 comments:

SELECT top 15 pnumber, pcomment, puser FROM photocomments order by pdate DESC

Now I have to use two other tables to determine the access level. Since PHOTOCOMMENTS is just a list of photo #'s and the people who left comments for those photos, I need to:

a) determine what location the photo is from and
b) determine the access level of that location

I use: select creator, access from locations where id=(select dir from photos where id="&pnumber&")"

This is a two step process as you can see. The first part is:

select dir from photos where id=(pnumber)

ID is the same value as pnumber seen in PHOTOCOMMENTS. That is to say PHOTOS.ID = PHOTOCOMMENTS.PNUMBER

If I haven't confused you yet, the executed code for the first example would be:

select dir from photos where id=210879

which would get me a value for DIR. DIR is the location number which would be:

select creator, access from locations where id=(dir value)

Just to simplify it a bit....

There are three tables (shown below)

PHOTOCOMMENTS
PHOTOS
LOCATIONS

I need to: SELECT top 15 pnumber, pcomment, puser FROM photocomments order by pdate DESC (first table shown)

but then also

select creator, access from locations (The last table shown)
where id=(select dir from photos where id="&pnumber&")"

So the first table PHOTOCOMMENTS has to also join PHOTOS table where PHOTOS.DIR = PHOTOCOMMENTS.PNUMBER in order to get the value of "DIR" and then DIR is joined to the LOCATIONS tables where PHOTOS.DIR = LOCATIONS.ID

Here is the actual code, which I am trying to make into a single SQL command

strSQL = "SELECT top 15 pnumber, pcomment, puser FROM photocomments order by pdate DESC"
set ors = oconn.Execute(strSQL)
tl = 0
do until ors.eof or tl > 15
' until we have 15 results because not every recordset will be of the proper security level

[Code] ....

Bonus points if you can also get it to select from LOCATIONS only WHERE userlevel >= 2

If I Had Any Hair Left I'd Pull It Out. How Do I Create A SSIS Package Which Creates A Table That Never Expires?

Mar 6, 2007

Hello everyone,

I'm not at all comfortable with SSIS so please forgive me if I overload you all with information here:

I need to create a data table using SSIS which does not delete the previous days data. So far all the data tables we use to write reports in Visual Studio are constructed in SSIS as follows.

1 - Excecute SQL Task - DELETE FROM STOCK
2 - Data Flow Task
3 - Data Reader Source - SELECT * FROM ODBCDATASOURCE
4 - OLE DB Destination (Creates table STOCK)

The data tables which are created this way are stored in a data warehouse and scheduled to refresh once a day, which means that any data from yesterday is lost when the updates run. So, I tried to create a table which never has its previous days' data deleted by using just the last three steps above - and it worked great in Visual Studio, no problem at all. However, when I added this SSIS Package to the Update Job in SQL Server Management Studio, the job totally rejected the packed with the message: "The command line parameters are invalid. The step failed".

I thought I could work around this problem by asking the job step to excecute a simple SQL query to insert the data from table1 into table2 (and would thus negate the need for a SSIS Packege at all), but it threw me a curve ball with some message about not being able to use proxy accounts to run T-SQL Scripts.

If anyone knows how to create a SSIS package in which the data never expires please could you impart some wisdom my way. I only need to do this once for a specific report.

Please, when answering, bear in mind that I'm a simple fellow with little understanding of the inner workings of SQL Server and its various components, so please use short sentences and simple words.

Thanks in advance,

Chris

Reporting Services :: Absolutely Page-bottom Alignment On Report Footer

Mar 21, 2007

Most of the time this will print on a single page, but if it breaks to multiple pages, that footer needs to go all the way to the absolute bottom.I grasp that the "report footer" for SSRS is just what appears at the end of any repeating controls that you've implemented in your body. Because SSRS uses this kind of repeating-control based idiom rather than a section-based idiom as Crystal does, this kind of (what I would consider very basic) positioning control is looking fairly impossible right now.Among what I've tried:

SSMS Express: Creating Parent-Child Table Via LEFT OUTER JOIN - Error Message 156

May 22, 2006

Hi all,

I got an error message 156, when I executed the following code:

////--SQLQueryParent&Child.sql---////////

Use newDB

GO

INSERT dbo.Person (PersonID, FirstName, LastName, City, State, Phone)

SELECT 1, "George", "Washington", "Washington", "DC", "1-000-1234567"

UNION ALL

UNION ALL

SELECT 12, "Doing the Right Thing is Hard", 2

GO

---Try to obtain the LEFT OUTER JOIN Results for the Parent-Child Table

SELECT * FROM Person AS I LEFT OUTER JOIN Book ON I.ID=P.ID

GO

////---Results---//////

Msg 156, Level 15, State 1, Line 5

Incorrect syntax near the keyword 'NOT'.

////////////////////////////////////////////////////

(1) Where did I do wrong and cause the Error Message 156?

(2) I try to get a Parent-Child table by using the LEFT OUTER JOIN via the following code statement:

Msg 156, Level 15, State 1, Line 5

Incorrect syntax near the keyword 'NOT'.

Can I get a Parent-Child table after the error 156 is resolved?

Please help and advise.

Thanks,

Scott Chang
