Rmote Database Inserts Blocking Local Queries.

Jan 26, 2008

I am running MS SQL 2000 server. The table involved is only about
10,000 records. But this is the behavior I am seeing.

The local machine is querying the table looking for a particular
record. Everything works fine.
The remote amchine goes to clear the table and then insert all 10,000
records, into the table the following happens.

1) the local machines queries do not compilete until the remote
machine is done.
2) the remote machine can take up to 6 minutes to do these 10,000
insert operations. So nothing on the local machine works right for
these 6 minutes.

I do not have access to the remote machines source to see what is
running but I am told it is simply a for loop with a insert query in
it. Nothing of a locking natture.

Any idea the types of things I should look for to track this down? I
found this by doing SQL profiler profiling and finding the remote
operations. Turn these operatiiosn off and the local machine works
fine again, with no other action.

Thanks,
David

SQL 2012 :: Blocking During Bulk Inserts?

Dec 9, 2014

We are noticing a lot of blocking when performing bulk inserts.

Sometimes the lead blocker(s) are blocking inserts into the same tables, but most of the time, it's insert to other tables. So, while bulk insert into table X is running, bulk insert into table Y is blocked from the insert into X.

- We turned off transactions from the application performing the bulk inserts - no change.

- We enabled table locking from the application - no change

- We enabled lock_on_bulk_load on the tables - this seems to have worked; however still see some blocking.

According to the lock_on_bulk article - When you specify table locking for a bulk import operation, a bulk update (BU) lock is taken on the table for the duration of the bulk-import operation, shouldn't we be seeing this BU lock? Instead, we see nothing but LCK_M_X (exclusive table locks).

Just found out that in order get a BU lock, no indexing can exist on the table ... sure be nice if that was in the article!

Also, we saw the exclusive locks happening before we made these changes, meaning it wasn't using the row locks that it should be by default. Assuming we're missing something here with lock escalation. I am profiling just for lock escalation, and it never happens ...

So I guess my pending question at this time is that why when inserting into table X do inserts into table Y get blocked?

Slow SELECT Blocking Critical INSERTs

May 20, 2008

Our company records live sales into an SQL Server database. The same tables that store the sale information are also used by a reporting interface to query sales figures, but occasionally a SELECT generated by the reports is so slow that it causes the INSERT operations to time out and fail.

We've tried increasing the CommandTimeout property in .NET of the application performing the inserts, but despite it being set to 90 seconds, it's still not enough to prevent the occasional sale from failing to record which is a big no-no for us. We've run the Database Tuning Advisor on the stored procedure that generates the SELECT for the reports, and it is now fully optimized but still this isn't enough. The tables are quite massive (millions of rows) and the SELECT requires JOINs to other tables, some of which are in a separate database on the same server.

Is there a solution to this problem, aside from increasing the CommandTimeout property to the point where no timeout errors occur? My concern is that doing this could increase the number of concurrent connections and we'd hit another limit, so it's not really solving the problem. Is there a way to configure SQL Server to always favour INSERTs over SELECTs? The reporting users won't really care if the reports are slower but it's critical to get these INSERTs up to 100% reliability.

I'm not a DBA (just a developer) so I don't have an intricate knowledge of databases and this problem is a bit beyond my level of expertise. Obviously we don't want to re-design our entire system, but we'll do whatever necessary to ensure we aren't failing to record sales.

One idea I had, which may be awful I don't know, is to submit these sales to an MSMQ and write some software that will read from the queue and insert the records from there instead. We could then deal with the timeout issue by just re-submitting the sale until it is accepted, then removing it from the queue.

HELP: Strange Blocking Performance Problem With Simultaneous Queries

Dec 1, 2005

Hello everyone, I am hoping someone can help me with this problem. Iwill say up front that I am not a SQL Server DBA, I am a developer. Ihave an application that sends about 25 simultaneous queries to a SQLServer 2000 Standard Edition SP4 running on Windows 2000 Server with2.5 GB of memory. About 11 of these queries are over views (all overthe same table) and these queries are all done from JDBC but I am notsure that matters. Anyway, initially I had no problem with thesequeries on the tables and the views with about 4 years of information(I don't know how many rows off hand). Then we changed the tables toreplicated tables from another server and that increased the amount ofdata to 15 years worth and also required a simple inner join on 2columns to another table for those views. Now here is the issue. After times of inactivity or other times duringthe day with enough time between my test query run I get what lookslike blocking behavior on the queries to the views (remember these allgo to the same tables). I run my 25 queries and the 11 view queriesall take about 120 seconds each to return (they all are withinmilliseconds of each other like they all sat there and then werereleased for processing at the same time). The rest of the queries arefine. Now if I turn around and immediately run the 25 queries again, they all come back in a few seconds which is the normal amount of time. Also, if I run a query on one of views first (just one) and then runthe 25 queries they all come back in a few seconds as well. This tells me that some caching must be involved since the times are sodifferent between identical queries but I would expect that one of thequeries would cache and thus take longer but the other 10 would befast, not all block for 2 minutes. What is more puzzling is that thisbehavior didn't occur before where now the only differences are:1) 3 times more data (but that shouldn't cause a difference from 3seconds to 120 and all tables have been through the index wizard with aSQL trace file to recommend indexes)2) There is now a join between 2 tables where there wasn't before3) The tables are replicated throughout the day.I would appreciate any insight into this problem as 120 seconds is waytoo long to wait. Thanks in Advance.Chris

Need Help - Local Synchronization Between SQL Mobile And Local SQL Database

Dec 21, 2005

Hi Everyone

I am at the stage of architecting my solution

My goal is to develop the system on a windows application and pda

There is a central server which will create a publication called inventory

The laptops which host the windows application will be subscribers to the central server using merge replication

The client now wants the PDA using SQL Mobile to synchronize with the local subscirber database on the laptop using active sync. They dont want to do it via WIFI to the IIS Server at the central server

I have been reading for days and I am still unsure whether this is possible to do.

I know Appforge provide a conduit for palm to access synchronization but not local sql databases

Port Blocking Preventing Deployment Of SSE Database

Jan 27, 2007

I am trying to deploy a SQL Server Express database to a remote SQL Server 2005 host. I was planning to copy and paste the data from my local tables to the remote tables using Management Studio Express but my ISP (NTL) appears to be blocking port 1433 and preventing me from getting a connection to the remote database.
Will an upgrade to SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition help me? I understand that it has a Backup & Restore Wizard but how does this work? Does it rely on a remote connection and will it fall foul of the NTL port blocking? Or, can the file that the Backup stage produces be copied into the web-based MSSQL Manager, that my web host provides, to restore to the remote database?
Any help would be much appreciated.

NETWORK IO Causing Database Hang And Blocking

Aug 12, 2015

I've been put in charge of a SQL server recently and I'm completely new to maintaining SQL. For some reason several clients when they are doing their database processing I get network_io hangs and everything comes to a halt. I have to go in there and manually kill the SPID and everything continues where it left off.

SQL Setup

Server 2012 R2
SQL 2014 SP1
Dell 850
VM running in Hyper-V
50GB RAM
FusionIO Card
10GB Ethernet between clients and server

All workstations are pretty much

Windows 7/8.1
10GB
64+GB of RAM
Several CPUs
SSD and SATA hard drives

It's very hit or miss when this occurs as well, however, it's always the same NETWORK_IO cause.

I've read on the Internet about how the client keep up with what SQL is sending. Could this be poor programming or do I need to investigate my network setup?

Slow Inserts/updates As The Database Size Grows

Oct 23, 2007

Hi all,

This managed application was written to run on a Symbol 3090 Win CE 5.0 scanning device. We are using the symbol provided classes to access the scanning interface, and SQL Compact database on the device to collect the scanned data, and then using merge replication to synchronize scanned data when the device is docked. The problem we have experienced seems to be releated to the performance when inserting and updating records in the database.

We have tested some randomly generated 1000 records and inserting/updatating into a database. At first the time to commit a record increases when the database is flushing into the memory (The flush interval in the connection string property is 10 seconds by default). and then as the database size grows increasing the time to commit every single record which is causing the application to perform slowly as they scan items into the database. However, the device program memory remains consistant as they are scan items. From our tests, I found the time to execute either a update/insert command on 2MB sqlMobile database (upto 10000 records, depending on the size of the columns) is taking nearly 2 to 2 and half seconds to complete. Below is the only code I am executing,

If Not sqlObj.UpdateItem(1061022, itemNo, 1) Then

sqlObj.InsertResultSet(1061022, itemNo, itemObj.Style, itemObj.Color, itemObj.Size, itemObj.Description, 0, 1)

End If

For the notes, I am using prepared updated command and resultset.insert methods to perform update and insert commands into the database.

Any help on this issue is highly appreciated.

Thanks
Ravi.

Multiple Tables, Inserts, Identity Columns And Database Integrity

Apr 30, 2008

Hi all,
I am writing a portion of an app that is of intensely high online eCommerce usage. I have a question about identity columns and locking or not.
What I am doing is, I have two tables (normalized), one is OrderDemographics(firstname, lastname, ccum, etc) the other is OrderItems. I have the primary key of OrderDemographics as a column called 'ID' (an Identity Integer that is incrementing). In the OrderItems table, the 'OrderID' column is a foreign key to the OrderDemographics Primary Key column 'ID'.
What I have previously done is to insert the demographics into OrderDemographics, then do a 'select top 1 ID from OrderDemographics order by ID DESC' to get that last ID, since you can't tell what it is until you add another row....
The problem is, there's up to 20,000 users/sessions at once and there is a possiblity that in the fraction of a second it takes to select back that ID integer and use it for the initial OrderItems row, some other user might have clicked 'order' a fraction of a second after the first user and created another row in OrderDemographics, thus incrementing the ID column and throwing all the items that Customer #1 orders into Customer #2's order....
How do I lock a SQL table or lock the Application in .NET to handle this problem and keep it from occurring?
Thanks, appreciate it.

Import Wizard - Using Query For Remote Database To Compare Local Database

Apr 10, 2008

I am trying to use the Import Wizard to setup a daily job to import new records based on an ID field (PK). The source database is remote and a replica. I am inserting new records to update my table called the same thing. Both are SQL Native Client

Code Snippet
select *
from [CommWireless].[dbo].[iQclerk_SaleInvoicesAndProducts] as S1
join [IQ_REPLICA].[dbo].[iQclerk_SaleInvoicesAndProducts] as S2
on S1.SaleInvoiceID = S2.SaleInvoiceID
where S1.SaleInvoiceID > S2.SaleInvoiceID

When I parse the query, I keep getting an error message.

Deferred prepare could not be completed.
Statement(s) could not be prepared.
Invalid object name 'IQ_REPLICA.dbo.iQ_SaleInvoicesAndProducts'. (Microsoft SQL Native Client)

Anyone know an easy why to get this to work? Or should I add a create table to verify new records?

Updating Online SQL 2005 Database From Local Database

Jan 30, 2007

I have my first small SQl Server 2005 database developed on my localserver and I have also its equivalent as an online database.I wish to update the local database (using and asp.net interface) andthen to upload the data (at least the amended data, but given thesmall size all data should be no trouble) to the online database.I think replication is the straight answer but I have no experience ofthis and I am wondering what else I might use which might be lesscomplicated. One solution is DTS (using SQL 2000 terms) but i am notsure if I can set this up (1) to overwrite existing tables and (2) notto seemingly remove identity attributes from fields set as identities.I know there are other possibilities but I would be glad of advice asto the likely best method for a small database updated perhaps onceweekly or at less frequent intervals,Best wishes, John Morgan

Updating A Table On My Hosted Database From A Local Database

Aug 1, 2007

Hi,

How do I insert data that I have collected in a local database onto a table on my online ie hosted database which is on a different server?

At the moment I am just uploading all the data to the hosted DB but this is wasting bandwith as only a small percentage of data is actually selected and used.

I thought that if i used a local DB and then update the table on my hosted DB this would be much more efficient, but I am not sure how to write the SQL code to do this!

Do I do some kind of

INSERT INTO sample_table

SELECT xxx

FROM origanal_table

Or is it more complicated than this?

New Database On Other Local Network Drive

Jan 15, 2007

Hello,
I need help with the setup of my sql server express 2005 and more specifically, with the location of the database files.  Normally, database files are located on the c: drive.  In my situation, being in a high school environnement, I need to have the database files on the network drive ... lets call it g:drive.  The reason why it cannot be on c:drive is because this drive is protected using DeepFreeze.  Now, I was able to change the location of the new drive as I went into the properties window of the sql server instance but when I try to create this new database, sql gives me grief  ;-|
I am from the group of people that thinks that to anything, there is a solution and am hoping that to this problem, there is hope of a solution.
 Can anyone help?
 Thank you
