Role Manager Feature? What Is It? --- Error In Connecting To Db
Apr 24, 2006
I keep getting this error. I am using Visual Web Developer Express 2005 (Visual Basic) and SQL Server 2005 Express.
"There is a problem with your selected data store. This can be caused by an invalid server name or credentials, or by insufficient permission. It can also be caused by the role manager feature not being enabled."
This is in the ASP.NET Configuration.
How do I enable role manager?

I know how to create an Application role in SQL server 7. Now how do I connect to the database from VB using that Application Role? I can't find anything about this topic anywhere. Is this the purpose of an Application role or am I way off?

Hi All,
when I open the http://serverName/Reports/Pages/Folder.aspx, I dont see Contents and Properties tab underneath Home.
When I click Site Settings, I see that I belong to System Administrator and System User Role.
Do I have to be under Content Manager Role to see Contents and Properties tab? With System Adminstration role, shouldn't I be able to do everything( add myself under ContentManager role)? Isn't System Admin superset of all role?
Where do I add myself under ContentManager Role?
Thanks for your help

Can you please explain why it is NOT woking on (x64) ?

Hello,
I'm trying to connect to an Oracle Database because I want to make a connection for my datasource in Analysis Manager. I have a servername, an user-id and a password. When I try the connection in SQL+, it works but when try it in Analysis Manager I get an error: "Test connection failed because of an error in initializing provider. Oracle error occured, but error message could not be retrieved from Oracle."
My provider is an "MS OLE DB provider for Oracle" because it is an oracle database I have to connect to.
Does somebody know what I'm doing wrong?
The server is imported in the tnsnames.ora file.
Kind regards,
Birgit

In Visual Studio, I am able to create a report( rdl file) and shared datsource ( rds file) connecting to Oracle using Oracle Client 9i. I can run the queries from within the visual studio but when I deploy to Report Manager and try running it, I am getting the error shown below. I opened the datasource associated with the rdl in RM and verified that the connection String is same as the one in Visual Studio.
Where could I possible go wrong? Any pointers will be highly appreciated.

Hi All,
Recently had to rebuild our SQLServer installation from scratch! major pain!! We had a remote server running a replicated version of the internal database system for the website. We also have a SQL DB hosted with a new ISP which is in test mode. All managed via EM.
Re-installed software, upgaded tp SP3, new MDAC. Set up the references for the two external DB's with the Client Network Utility. In EM set up a connection to DB on the new ISP, works perfectly, tried on the old DB and get 'SQL Server is not running or access denied' error message.
I confirmed the server is running, as its our live site. Cant connect using Query Analyser. I can ping the adress successfully. I've created new user logings that mach on both machines/servers, still no luck!
Can anyone suggest what the problem is/might be or how to fix... I'm flat out of ideas!
Major THANKS! for any gems...

I have Enterprise Manager on my local machine. For the last twelvemonths it has been connecting without problem to my online SQL Serverdatabase provided by my ISP.Three weeks ago the ISP applied some sort of extra securityarrangements to their SQL Server to allow access only through port1433. they have told me to configure an alias using Network Client andto register this alias in the usual way using my Enterprise Manager. My problem is that despite creating the alias in exactly the wayinstructed I just cannot connect to online database. I keep gettingthe SQL Server does not exist or access denied when I try to connect. As a result of advice obtained I have tried using the lite version ofthe 'littleADmin' tool available fromhttp://www.mylittletools.net/scripts/en/mla_sql/Using this useful looking software I find I cannot connect to theonline SQL database when it is installed on my own local machine butif I install it on my website it does connect without problem to myonline SQL. Server databaseHowever I need to use my more powerful Enterprise Manager to connect,my question (at last!) is:1. Is there likely to be a problem trying to connect to my onlinedatabase from Enterprise Manager on my local machine as a result ofthe new security arrangements. In other words, is there somethinganalagous to what is happening with the 'littleAdmin tool' wherebyusing Enterprise Manager I cannot connect from my local machine forsome reason obvious to everyone except myself??or2. Is it possible that there is some problem arising from Net Client?(the aliases appear in Enterprise Manager OK)I know my ISP should be answering this sort of question but they justdon't seem to know. I need to connect even if only to download mydatabase and take it to another ISP,Best wishes, John Morgan

Hi,
I'm using Integration Service between Firebird and MS SQL 2005. I can able to move data from Firebird db tables to MS SQL db tables using DataReader source (Firebird Connection Manager) and SQL Server Destination (SQL Server Connection Manager) component.
Now I want to execute parametrized SQL statement to fetch data from Firebird DB using Execute SQL Task Component. In this process while trying to set Connection property to this component I can able to view only MS SQL Connection Manager and it is not listing Firebird Connection Manager.
Now I need a help to get connect this Execute SQL Task component with Firebird connection Manager. Help me to find out where I'm making mistake.
FYI. I'm using Firebird .Net Provieder 2.0.1
Thanks in advance.

I've successfully installed SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition on an Enterprise edition of Windows Server 2003 x64. I'm now (and also tried & failed during the install of the database engine) attempting to install the "Management Tools" component on the same server. However, in all my attempts to do so, I receive the following error:
---
The feature(s) specified are not valid for this edition of SQL Server
---
The message box does not list the features that are not valid but since the only item I've selected to install is the "Management Tools" option under "Client Components" it obviously points to something with that.
Am I missing something or are the Management Tools not supported in my config - most notably SQL Server 2005 Standard edition running on Windows Server 2003 x64?
Thanks.

I have deployed my packages into Sql Server and I am using Configuration File. As my Data Source is Excel, I have changed the connection string during deployment with Server Path. But I am getting the following errors. Actually the File Exist in Path. May I know What is cause of the issue? Do I need to give any permission to execute the package.

I get the following errors associated with trying to create an SP.
Server: Msg 170, Level 15, State 1, Procedure AddFortuneUser, Line 8
Line 8: Incorrect syntax near '@newuser'.
Server: Msg 137, Level 15, State 2, Line 1
Must declare the variable '@newuser'.
Can anyone explain why I have to do a declare.
I suspect I have to issue "declare @newuser sysname" somewhere but I'm not sure why.
The following is the code I'm trying to run.
My intent would be to create a form for the Admin Clerk that would call this SP. That way they can create a generic login. They have an application that allows them to change the password after the fact.
/*
Created for Admin person to allow them to add a basic SQL Login Account
forcing the user to be a member of a specific role 'helmsman'
in a specific database 'Fortune'
*/
CREATE PROCEDURE AddFortuneUser
@newuser char(128)
AS
EXEC master..sp_addlogin @loginame=@newuser, @passwd =substring(@newuser,1,8), @defdb =Fortune
GO
if not exists (select * from dbo.sysusers where name = @newuser and uid < 16382)
EXEC sp_grantdbaccess @loginame=@newuser, @name_in_db=@newuser
GO
exec master..sp_addrolemember @rolename ='helmsman', @membername =@newuser
GO

Hi,
I removed a role in the datasourceview of a datamodel. Later I removed the role in the reportmodel. There are always two roles for one relation. Now I only have one role left and I can't delete it anymore.
This is the error I get when building the project.
Error 2 The RelatedRoleID property of the Role 'invoicelineid' refers to the Role 'Gd1b03590-f98b-46aa-945d-c90ccd5d6028', which is not in the same SemanticModel as the Role 'invoicelineid'. Max generiek.smdl 0 0
When I try to remove the role I'll get an error : object reference not set to an instance of an object.
If I look at the properties of the role I see that when I open 'related role' there is nothing in it, except an ID: Gd1b03590-f98b-46aa-945d-c90ccd5d6028 and as name: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.
I also tried to remove the whole entity but that resulted in the same error. It's not an option for mee to remove the whole model and autogenerate it again, but there is too much work in it already.
If I try to remove this thing in the xml itself it gives other errors and the model won't load anymore.
I hope somebody has a solution for this.
thanks in advance,
Julian Kooiker

I used a backup copy of our production DB (residing in our prod machine) to do a database RESTORE to our test DB (residing in our test machine). This step was successful.
However when I tried to access the test DB via Peoplesoft application, I am unable to logon. Only then did I notice that all the users, with the exception of "sa", were gone.
When I attempted to add a user via Enterprise Manager's Action - Add Database User, I get the message, "Error 15023: User or role '%' already exists in the current database.
What's the best way to fix this without resorting to copying the source server's master database (If i do this, I risk clobbering some other DB's that are present in the target server but not in source server)?
Any help you can provide will be greatly appreciated!!!

Hi there. I work in a support department and on great occasion (such as this morning), I am RASd in to a client and try running a SQL trace, only to receive an error when setting it up, 'In order to run a trace against SQL Server you have to be amember of sysadmin fixed server role.'
Today, I even called their DBA and asked him if he could set our userid up with the proper permissions to all us to run traces (I'm debugging a RTE). He stated that he was unfamiliar with the error and didn't know where to assign us to resolve this problem.
Does anyone know how to resolve this?
Many thx.

Question to those who may have had this same error- it seems that I am not able to delete some of the reports that I have created. This just started happening recently and according to our system admin nothing has changed as far as permissions are concernced. We installed SP2 the other day and I was wondering if this could have anything to do with the error message below
by the way I am a member of the sysadmin group
thanks in advance

I am very frustrated. Everything works on the local host but when I upload to server I can login to the admin role I created, but when I try to access pages that have role priveleges I get the following error:
The SSE Provider did not find the database file specified in the connection string. At the configured trust level (below High trust level), the SSE provider can not automatically create the database file.
The ASPNETDB.MDF database was uploaded using the Database Publishing Wizard.
Please help!

Can't get over this error, and net searches reveal other postings similiar, but no answers.
SSIS database transfer task (with overwrite) from SQL 2k source to SQL 2k5 destination fails with:
Error: The Execute method on the task returned error code 0x80131500 (ERROR : errorCode=-1073548784 description=Executing the query "CREATE ROLE [RFRSH_USER] " failed with the following error: "User, group, or role 'RFRSH_USER' already exists in the current database.". Possible failure reasons: Problems with the query, "ResultSet" property not set correctly, parameters not set correctly, or connection not established correctly. helpFile= helpContext=0 idofInterfaceWithError={8BDFE893-E9D8-4D23-9739-DA807BCDC2AC}). The Execute method must succeed, and indicate the result using an "out" parameter.
The error seems the same regardless if the destination DB exists or not!
Anyone have a solution?

Hello,
I recently joined a company that is having an issue connecting to SQL Server Integration Services on one of their production servers. When trying to connect via management studio, both locally and remotely, they receive the error below. The server is a 64 bit server and is using third party replication (Veritas).
It sort of sounds like the issue described in this knowledge base article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/919224. However, we do not have a problem creating maintenance plans. I'd just give it a shot but its a production server and getting approval to do anything that modifies the registry with the registry replication setup is a pain, so I'd like to determine if there could be another cause first.

When my production server processing some queries suddenly the SQL Server service crashed and following error was in the error log:
SQL Server Internal Error. Text manager cannot continue with current statement.
The server is running SQL Server 2000 with SP4.
I am really concerned because this is a production sever and there are over 300 users access concurrently.
Please help me to find a solution.

In sql server 2000, I created some custom database roles called ProjectLeader and Developer. I would make these roles a member in the fixed database roles so that I would only have to add the user to the ProjectLeader or Developer role once and they would presto-magico have the security I wanted them to have with no unecessary mouse clicking. I'm not sure how to repeat this process in 2005? Management Studio doesn't seem to allow you to add a role as a member in another role. Is there a work around or solution for this?
