Row Length Error With View

Nov 2, 2004

I'm having this problem with SQL Server 2000...

Sample query in view definition:

SELECT somecol1 FROM sometable1
UNION
SELECT somecol2 FROM sometable2

I'm returning more columns in the SELECT than I've put in the sample and all the datatypes match for each column. But...

I get the row error when the view is run. If I run the first part in it's own results are returned. If I run the second on it's own I get results. I only get the error when they are UNIONed. There's no ordering or grouping.

Why would each of them run individually but not UNIONed together?

Also, if I remove ('' instead of table.column) one of the larger nvarchar columns from the first or second query, the UNIONed statement returns results just fine.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Mike

T-SQL (SS2K8) :: Procedure Parameter Length Declaration Less Than Column Length?

Jun 30, 2014

is there any way or a tool to identify if in procedure the Parameter length was declarated less than table Column length ..

I have a table

CREATE TABLE TEST001 (KeyName Varchar(100) ) a procedure
CREATE PROCEDURE SpFindNames ( @KeyName VARCHAR(40) )
AS
BEGIN
SELECT KeyName FROM TEST001
WHERE KeyName = @KeyName
END
KeyName = @KeyName

Here table Column with 100 char length "KeyName" was compared with SP parameter "@KeyName" with length 40 char ..

IS there any way to find out all such usage on the ALL Procedures in the Database ?

BlobColumn.GetBlobData() With Data Length &&> Integer Length (32767)

Mar 27, 2008

For those of you who would like to reference my exact issue, I'm dealing with the RSExecution SSIS package at the "Update Parameters" data flow task, at the Script Component.

The script tries to split parameter data into name and value. Unfortunately, I have several reports that are passing parameters that are very large. One example has over 65,000 characters all in the normal "&paramname=value&parm2=value..." format.

The code in the script works fine until it gets to one of these very large parameter sets. I have figured out what is causing the issue. Here's some code:

Dim paramBlob as Byte()
paramBlob = Row.BlobColumn.GetBlobData(0, Row.BlobColumn.Length)

The second parameter of the .GetBlobData function takes an INTEGER as its count! Therefore, no matter what kind of datatype I pass to the string that the script will later split, it will be limited to 32767 characters.

THIS IS A PROBLEM!!!

Does anyone know a workaround for this issue? I need all of the parameter data to be reported, and I would hate to have to skip over rows like this. Also, if I'm missing something, please fill me in!

Thanks for your help in advance,
LOSTlover

CommandParameters.length Don't Match Parametervalues.length

Feb 24, 2008

I am trying to narrow down this problem.  Basically, I added 3 columns to my article table.  It holds the article id, article text, author and so on.  I tested my program before adding the additional field to the program.  The program works fine and I can add an article, and edit the same article even though it skips over the 3 new fields in the database.  It just puts nulls into those columns. So, now I have added one of the column names I added in the database to the code. I changed my businesslogic article.vb code and the addarticle.aspx, as well as the New article area in the addartivle.aspx.vb  page. The form now has an additional textbox field for the ShortDesc which is a short description of the article. This is the problem now:  The command parameters.length is 9 and there are 10 parameter values.  Right in the middle of the 10 values is the #4 value which I inserted into the code.  It says Nothing when I hover my mouse over the code after my program throws the exception in 17 below.  Why is  command parameters.length set to 9 instead of 10?  Why isn't it reading the information for value 4 like all the other values and placing it's value there and calculating 10 instead of 9? Where are these set in the program?  Sounds to me like they are hard coded in someplace and I need to change them to match everything else.  1 ' This method assigns an array of values to an array of SqlParameters.2 ' Parameters:3 ' -commandParameters - array of SqlParameters to be assigned values4 ' -array of objects holding the values to be assigned5 Private Overloads Shared Sub AssignParameterValues(ByVal commandParameters() As SqlParameter, ByVal parameterValues() As Object)6 7 Dim i As Integer8 Dim j As Integer9 10 If (commandParameters Is Nothing) AndAlso (parameterValues Is Nothing) Then11 ' Do nothing if we get no data12 Return13 End If14 15 ' We must have the same number of values as we pave parameters to put them in16 If commandParameters.Length <> parameterValues.Length Then17 Throw New ArgumentException("Parameter count does not match Parameter Value count.") 18 End If19 20 ' Value array21 j = commandParameters.Length - 122 For i = 0 To j23 ' If the current array value derives from IDbDataParameter, then assign its Value property24 If TypeOf parameterValues(i) Is IDbDataParameter Then25 Dim paramInstance As IDbDataParameter = CType(parameterValues(i), IDbDataParameter)26 If (paramInstance.Value Is Nothing) Then27 commandParameters(i).Value = DBNull.Value28 Else29 commandParameters(i).Value = paramInstance.Value30 End If31 ElseIf (parameterValues(i) Is Nothing) Then32 commandParameters(i).Value = DBNull.Value33 Else34 commandParameters(i).Value = parameterValues(i)35 End If36 Next37 End Sub ' AssignParameterValues38 39 40 41

Error Of Max Length Of String Using Sql DTC To Import DATA

Mar 8, 2004

Hi,

I am trying to use DTC to import about 500 records from an Excelsheet to an SQL database.

Some fields contain strings with a length of about 1700 characters.

When i'm trying to execute the DTC generated code it is giving an error and saying that the maximum string length of 255 has been reached. Althoug the column in the database is defined as nchar(1750).

Does anybody know an answer to this problem ?

Thanks in advance,

Goofy

Error When Changing The Length On DataReader Source

Nov 3, 2006

Hi,
I am trying to import data from Oracle RDB into SQL Server 2005 using SSIS. Created a ODBC data source to connect to Oracle and used DataReader Source component and ADO.net to connect to the ODBC data source.

Under the Component properties tab, the SQL Command looks something like this.

Select ID, ADDRESS, REVISED from ADDRESS

The data type for the source columns are Integer, Varchar(30) and DATE VMS.

Now when I look at the Input and Output properties window,

The External columns has the following data types.

ID - four-byte signed integer [DT_I4]
ADDRESS - Unicode string [DT_WSTR], length = 0
REVISED - database timestamp [DT_DBTIMESTAMP]

The Output columns has the following data types

ID - four-byte signed integer [DT_I4]
ADDRESS - Unicode string [DT_WSTR], length = 0
REVISED - database timestamp [DT_DBTIMESTAMP]

When I tried to change the length of the ADDRESS on the output column, I get the following error.

Error at Data Flow Task [DataReader Source [1]]: The data type of output columns on the component "DataReader Source" (1) cannot be changed.

Error at Data Flow Task [DataReader Source [1]]: System.Runtime.InteropServices.COMException (0xC020837D)

Is this the default length for the Unicode string type. I was not able to load the ADDRESS column as it gets truncated before I load it into destination. Even if I use Derived or Data Conversion transformation, the ADDRESS is getting truncated before it reaches this transformation.

Any thoughts.

Thanks,
SK

Error: Invalid Length Parameter Passed To The SUBSTRING Function.

Sep 28, 2007

Hi,

I am using a simple procedure to pivot results (found in another forum and adapted it). It is done on SQL Server 2005 server with all service packs. Procedure:
**************
ALTER Procedure [dbo].[EthnicityPivot] @StDate as Datetime, @EndDate as Datetime
as
begin
DECLARE @Teams varchar(2000)

truncate table ForEthnicPivot

INSERT INTO ForEthnicPivot
SELECT DISTINCT COUNT(ID), Team, Ethnicity
FROM dbo._EthnicityByTeamEpisode
where Startdate between @StDate and @EndDate
GROUP BY Ethnicity, Team

SET @Teams = ''
--// Get a list of the pivot columns that are important to you.

SELECT @Teams = @Teams + '[' + Team + '],'
FROM (SELECT Distinct Team FROM ForEthnicPivot) Team
--// Remove the trailing comma

SET @Teams = LEFT(@Teams, LEN(@Teams)-1)
--// Now execute the Select with the PIVOT and dynamically add the list
--// of dates for the columns
EXEC( 'SELECT * FROM ForEthnicPivot PIVOT (SUM(countID) FOR Team IN (' + @Teams + ')) AS X' )
end
************

I can call the function:
exec EthnicityPivot '01/01/2007','09/09/2007'

and it works fine in SQL analyzer, but when I want to use it in Visual Studio in a new report I am getting this error
message:

There is an error in the query. Invalid length parameter passed to the SUBSTRING function. Incorrect syntax near ')'.

Anyone had similar error and sorted it?

Cheers

Odd Error Upon SqlDataReader.Read() Invalid Length Parameter Passed To The Substring Function.

Nov 12, 2003

An application I developed normally works great, but it seems that when processing a certian record (and none of the others so far), SQL Server throws this error:
"Invalid length parameter passed to the substring function."

Here's the code in question:

orderConnection.Open()
orderReader = orderCommand.ExecuteReader()
setControls(orderReader)

...

Private Sub setControls(ByVal dr As SqlDataReader)
If (dr.Read()) Then '<--*******problem line*******

The SqlDataReader (orderReader) doesn't blow up or anything until I call .Read() (and, as mentioned, this problem only occurs for one order). What could be happening here?

Reporting Services :: Error On Deploying SSRS Map Report - Maximum Request Length Exceeded

Jul 19, 2015

I am trying to deploy a shape file map of the world with 100 random data points from my dataset but get this error: "exception running the extensions specified in the config file. ---> Maximum request length exceeded". I can preview this fine in SSDT. I have read various solutions which involve editing the config file but I don't have permissions to get to these files. Is there any way to amend the maximum length either through SSMS or SSDT? If not how can I make my map size small enough to deploy? It is a very simple shape file with no colours etc and I am passing random 100 data points to it from my dataset.

Me thinking I was clever decided to go to the copied database and copy the "syntax" for creating the view and then run it on the database I deleted the view but I get the following message I can't for the life of me work out what the problem is.

CASE is not supported Error in a View

In SQL 7, when a view parses the below code, it generates a 'CASE is not Supported' error'; however, it will still generate and show the field with the CASE statements correctly; What might cause this error?

(Other useful info: this code is from a converted SQL 6.5 DB and the SQL 7 is running in compatibility mode, i inserted '' to remove concantenation of NULL problems;)

Example of display:

THEN ', ' + State ELSE '' END + ': ' ELSE ''

from dbo.encounters e

join dbo.CD_Procedure CP on CP.Procedure_CD = e.procedure_cd
where cp.procedure > 0

group by e.episode_key

)ee on e.object_key = ee.object_key

join dbo.cd_procedure cp on cp.procedure_cd = e.procedure_cd

CREATE UNIQUE CLUSTERED INDEX IDX_V1

ON vwLookAdmissionRecord (episode_key)

but i keep getting an error:

annot create index on view "dbo.vwLookAdmissionRecord" because it references derived table "ee" (defined by SELECT statement in FROM clause). Consider removing the reference to the derived table or not indexing the view.

How can I fix this?

Nested Trigger Error When Doing A Select On View?

Jan 9, 2013

In a SQL db we have we get the following error when just doing a simple select query against the view. Msg 217, Level 16, State 1...Maximum stored procedure, function, trigger, or view nesting level exceeded (limit 32).

No changes have been made to triggers or stored procedures recently and all was good prior to that.I understand that if my triggers loop this error will occur. But the select query does not fire any triggers functions or any other items. and the select worked with no issues last week.

Code:
SELECT TOP (100) PERCENT O.EID, O.OStart, O.OEnd, O.OID, T.Title, P.PStatus AS PS, dbo.CalcAge(O.OStart, ISNULL(O.OEnd, CURRENT_TIMESTAMP)) AS ODuration, O.PID,
O.Residence, O.b55, O.SplitItem, O.PeakStaff, O.ResidenceSub, O.Negotiator, O.Supervisor, O.TimeType, O.BreakPM, O.WorkEnd, O.Lunch, O.BreakAM, O.WorkBegin,

[code]....

SQL Server 2012 :: Error In PIVOT Using CTE In VIEW?

Oct 23, 2014

I would like to have rows presented as columns. That's why I use the PIVOT function at the end.The resultset will be presented in Excel using an external connection to the view.

When I try to save the view I get the error

Msg 4104, Level 16, State 1, Procedure _TEST, Line 47

The multi-part identifier "vk.OppCode" could not be bound.

Code (restricting the columns that I actually have to the relevant columns only):

USE [DBTest]
GO
/****** Object: View [dbo].[_TEST] Script Date: 23-10-2014 17:24:10 ******/
SET ANSI_NULLS ON
GO
SET QUOTED_IDENTIFIER ON

Error Creating And Inserting Data Into VIEW

Feb 27, 2008

I have written following SQL query, this creates temporary table, inserts rows into it. I need to create VIEW "vw_NumberOfAttachments" in the database. I initially created table using "CREATE TABLE" but then i got error as VIEW can not be filled by temporary table. Hence I am using DECLARE TABLE
--------------------------------
SET ANSI_NULLS ON
GO
SET QUOTED_IDENTIFIER ON
GO
CREATE PROCEDURE sp_GetViewNumberOfAttachments
-- Add the parameters for the stored procedure here

AS
BEGIN
-- SET NOCOUNT ON added to prevent extra result sets from
-- interfering with SELECT statements.
SET NOCOUNT ON;

DECLARE @emailMessageID bigint
DECLARE @metaDataStorageID bigint
DECLARE @numberOfAttachments int

DECLARE @AttachmentDetails TABLE
(
emailMessageID bigint,
metaDataStorageID bigint,
numberOfAttachments int
)

DECLARE ATTACHMENT_CURSOR CURSOR
FOR
SELECT emailMessageID, metaDataStorageID
FROM ppaEmailMessage
WHERE hasAttachments='true'

OPEN ATTACHMENT_CURSOR
FETCH NEXT FROM ATTACHMENT_CURSOR INTO @emailMessageID, @metaDataStorageID

WHILE @@FETCH_STATUS = 0
BEGIN
-- here the table name need to get dynamically the name of the attachment table
-- for a moment it is written as ppaMsOfficeDoc, but that should change dynamically
set @numberOfAttachments = (SELECT count(*) FROM ppaMsOfficeDoc WHERE metaDataStorageID = @metaDataStorageID)

INSERT INTO @AttachmentDetails(emailMessageID, metaDataStorageID, numberOfAttachments)
VALUES (@emailMessageID, @metaDataStorageID, @numberOfAttachments)

FETCH NEXT FROM ATTACHMENT_CURSOR INTO @emailMessageID, @metaDataStorageID
END

CLOSE ATTACHMENT_CURSOR
DEALLOCATE ATTACHMENT_CURSOR

IF EXISTS (SELECT TABLE_NAME FROM INFORMATION_SCHEMA.VIEWS
WHERE TABLE_NAME = 'vw_NumberOfAttachments')
DROP VIEW vw_NumberOfAttachments
GO
CREATE VIEW vw_NumberOfAttachments
AS
SELECT @AttachmentDetails.emailMessageID, @AttachmentDetails.metaDataStorageID, @AttachmentDetails.numberOfAttachments
FROM @AttachmentDetails
GO
END
GO

----------------------

I am getting following errors:
-----------
Msg 102, Level 15, State 1, Procedure sp_GetViewNumberOfAttachments, Line 57
Incorrect syntax near 'vw_NumberOfAttachments'.
Msg 137, Level 15, State 2, Procedure vw_NumberOfAttachments, Line 3
Must declare the scalar variable "@AttachmentDetails".
Msg 102, Level 15, State 1, Line 2
Incorrect syntax near 'END'.
-----------
Can anyone please suggest whats wrong in there? Many thanks

SQL Express Timeout Error When Executing A View

Apr 17, 2007

I get the following error message:

SQL Exectution error,

Exectuted SQL statement: SELECT...

Source: .Net SqlClient data provider

Message: Timeout expired, timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation...

The view is operating on a table of ~250,000 records. The timeout occurs after 45 seconds, and none of the changes I make to the various timeout settings in the server or database seem to affect this.

When I execute the same sql statement in a query window it does complete, requiring about 7 minutes to execute.

How can I configure the view not to timeout when executing this query?

Error Creating View Which Uses Linked Server

Jan 24, 2008

Hellow,

This is the siuation:
I have on server A SQL 2005
on server B i have SQL 2000

I want to create in a database on server A a view which uses a linked server to get data from server B.
The linked server works fine.
But when I want to execute the creation of that view i get this error:

OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI" for linked server "BI_AX_LINK" returned message "Unspecified error".
OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI" for linked server "BI_AX_LINK" returned message "The stored procedure required to complete this operation could not be found on the server. Please contact your system administrator.".
Msg 7311, Level 16, State 2, Procedure VW_ASSETTABLE, Line 1
Cannot obtain the schema rowset "DBSCHEMA_TABLES_INFO" for OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI" for linked server "BI_AX_LINK". The provider supports the interface, but returns a failure code when it is used.

I have checked and the collations between the to databases are the same.
Anyone an idea on who to do such thing?
The rights that i have an server B or not that much.

Thanx for the info
