Hello all,
This is the best suited forum I found that fits my problem. If there's a better one, please direct me to it.
I have an Access database that contains (for the purpose of my application) a lot of information (15,000+ records in one of the tables).
My application suffers from slow performance because of the size of the tables (this is because the data has to be compared to data on a Palm device).
I have done a lot of optimizations to the code, but I haven't found a way to implement the best optimization for my case: Getting row- and field-level modification dates.
That way I can only compare relevant data and not the whole database.
For example, I wish there was a way to filter out rows from a table that were modified before January 1st, 2007.
Another example: Filter out rows that their Address column was modified in the last two weeks.
I know that a partial solution will be to implement this on my own: adding a Modified column to all my tables.
But, as I said, this is only a partial solution because it saves only the row's modification date, and not for each of the fields. Plus, this is a really ugly solution, having this column standing out everywhere.
Is there a chance this is implemented inside Access (or SQL server, for that matter)?
The closest I came was finding out that there's a field in msysobjects that specifies when a table was last modified. But not a row or a field in a row.
Any help will be greatly appreciated!

P.S. The weird thing is that this "modified" bit that I'm looking for is implemented on Palm devices and is very easy to use... Seems ironic that there won't be a simple way to do this on a PC.

I use C++ non-.NET ADO in order to access that database (msado15.dll).

Hi,I'm writing an application that involves data that has a set of usersthat are allowed to perform certain operations on it.i.e. Only the row owner can modify a row, but there is a set of userswho can view it.At the moment, I've started to implement this by calling a UDF at thebeginning of each stored procedure that validates that the user isallowed to call the procedure on that particular row (trusting a higherteir to verify the user), and throws an error if they are not.I don't particularly like this solution, as I need a UDF for eachprocedure, and will have to re-write the udf's if the access ruleschange (which they might).Can anyone suggest a method of implementing a more generic rowpermissions system?Cheers,Ben

Hi All,
I need to create a new field on a table and have that field default to another field value in that same table. Is there a way to do this w/ a default constraint rather than adding a trigger to the table? If i can't use a default constraint does anyone have a template trigger i could use? Below is an example of what i'm trying to do (Field_C is the new field and i want it to use Field_A value if no other value is specified on insert). Any help would be greatly appreciated.
alter table FOO add Field_C varchar(50) not null constraint FOO_default DEFAULT Field_A

Where can I get some information on field-level encryption in SQL Server? My users will be installing my ASP.NET app on a laptop and taking it out "into the field". If it gets stolen they want some safeguards.I've suggested that they encrypt the hard drive and things, but they want field-level encryption for the data. I know how to do things like hash a password, but that doesn't help with retrieval. I have to be able to search on and decode the data. For example, I have SSN as a field. I need to be able to search on SSN, display it to the user, and allow them to change it.The other problem is partial searches. If I encrypt SSN in the database then I can probably just search on the hashed value, but if I want to search on "smith" and get all of the smiths, smithes, etc., then I can't search on the encrypted value. I have about 1 million records, so decrypting each name to do the search would be prohibitive.Anyway, I'm sure this has been done, so if there is a thread or a site that discusses this I'd be willing to read up on it.

I'm just getting into using sql server 2008 and the report builder 3.0 addon after a long time away from sql and I was wondering if the following was possible.I have a number of records with a start and end date along with a volume i.e.
Delivery Start; Delivery End; Volume
01/06/12; 05/06/12; 25,000
01/06/12; 02/06/12; 50,000
24/05/12; 26/10/12; 5,000
Essentially this means for each day between the two delivery dates the stated volume is delivered, what i need to try and do is to find the volume for each day between two user entered dates, giving a result along the lines of
Start Date Entered = 01/06/12
End Date Entered = 03/06/12
Date; Total Volume
01/06/12; 80,000
02/06/12; 80,000
03/06/12; 30,000
Is this actually doable?

I have a form that's filtering search results and porting to a gridview. The drop down is selecting from the date column of SQL, but i want it the default value to show all dates in the gridview. In a normal string field, you can just use "%", but a datetime field won't take this. What can i use to show all dates?

I have a table with several million rows of data. There is a date field defined as a char(8) with some bad rows. i tried to locate them with below
select date_stopped from patient_medication
where isdate(convert(datetime,date_stopped)) = 1
This won't work, I get the
Server: Msg 242, Level 16, State 3, Line 1
The conversion of a char data type to a datetime data type resulted in an out-of-range datetime value
Any way around this?

I am doing a search on a column of type varchar, the columns all contain dates in the future. When i perform a query
SELECT [CIFPan]
,[CIFMemNum]
,[CIFLName]
,[CIFFName]
,[CIFExpDate]
FROM [FutureSoft].[dbo].[zCIFRecord]
WHERE CAST([CIFExpDate] AS smalldatetime) between '12/01/2000' and '01/30/2015'
I get error:
Msg 295, Level 16, State 3, Line 1
Conversion failed when converting character string to smalldatetime data type.
I can use this same query on an exactly same other field that contains dates in the past. Is there some kind of limitation on the dates as far as them being in the future or past?

I am using Sql Server 2012. I have a table which has a field as Datetime (it is a table in Dynamics CRM 2011 so I have no control of the data type). Say this field is called BisStartDate. If I run this query in management studio.
select
BisStartDate, BisStartDateutc
from myTable
where _bisnumber=10375
I will get:
BisStartDate BisStartDateutc
2014-07-29 00:00:00.000 2014-07-29 05:00:00.000
*in CRM, datetime is saved in 2 fields, one is the current time, the other one is the utc time.
You can see the offset between the datetime and utc is 5 hours.
However when the same statement was running inside a SSIS package on the server, the result returned is:
BisStartDate BisStartDateutc
2014-07-28 23:00:00.0000000 2014-07-29 05:00:00.000
And if I do
datediff(MINUTE,CRMAF_BisSection.ttc_section_startdatetimeutc,CRMAF_BisSection.ttc_section_startdatetime)
I will get -5 if I run it in ManagementStudio and -6 is running on server package(running inside VisualStudio will be -5, same as running a query in ManagementStudio).
I think when the record was saved, “date” is 5 hours offset to UTC time but now the system use the current utc offset which is 6 hours. I just want to use the BisStartDate as it is. How do I let the SSIS turn off the conversion.
The same datatime is saved in another system then we compare them to check the data entry. Now because of this one hour difference, sometime the Day will be different.

I am trying to migrate a system across and need some help tidying data and merging info.
Firstly if I have some companies with the suffix 'Limited' and some with 'Ltd' ie BBC Ltd and BBC Limited. How do I change all these to read the company name and then Ltd??
Secondly I am pulling info from a table which has company name duplicates into a table that also may have company details relating to that company name. I wish to add the details if the company name doesn't exist in the table and also only input the once from the source table. I am using cursors for this. My scripts see below is adding every record. Any ideas why??

Is there a way to change the servername without editing each query in each DTS package.

Im trying to basically take an email address user@domain.com that is in a row and basically split it up or get 1 side.
Im trying to find the command if it exists or a way to do this in tran sql to basically give me everything left or right of the '@' symbol, is there an easy way of doing this? Thanks!

I have converted Access database to sql express. Access Database had AutoNumber FIelds for which trigger was generated by Upsizing wizard.
Now when I import data from client the autonumber field value changes because trigger is fired which distroys all links
I want to modify trigger so that it generates new number only when it is not supplied in a insert command.
Please help. Code is given below. Also suggest how to save because when I use save, it asks for a new .sql file name and a new file is generated instead of modifying the same trigger

My problem is related to database and data.

I have listed a view below and a portion of the result set that is returned when I run the code in Query Analyzer. This is part of a timesheet application that logs hours per SCHLSTUID per SECTIONID per week. This returns the SCHLSTUID(user's ID), SECTIONID, Date that the week starts, the first date that time was logged. The user could be in several SECTIONID's for the same week. I want for users to be able to add/remove, rename, and change the datatype of certain fields in a database table. Is there a way to find out when the last modification or change to data in a table occured ? How about the last change of a view ?
We'd like to be able to extract data to another table based on a view. Then, at a later date, check to see if the first table or view has changed since the last extract. If not, then we don't need to re-extract the data, we know it hasn't changed.

I'm wondering about datetimes modification while debugging. I've a backup of a db debugging searching for some answeres. Problem is I have to asume it's one month back in time, so when I get the value from some date functions, if I after that modify the date value displayed for the parameters (debugging with vs pro 2005) will it be my modified values that it uses when those variables are used? It seams like it, but I'd like to be 100% sure.

Is there a way to force the modification of a User Defined Function upon which depend other objects.
This is the message:
Msg 3729, Level 16, State 3, Procedure FunctionName, Line 22
Cannot ALTER 'FunctionName' because it is being referenced by object 'OtherObject'.
I have 48 objects related to the function and each time I need modify the function is a big pain.
Any help will be much appreciated.
