Row Count Validation Between Source Flat File To Target Database Table
Aug 8, 2006
Hi all,
I am new in SSIS. Anyone know how to valify number of record that I load from csv file to SQL database table?
For example, the source file call product.csv and target table in database named DSS table name PRODUCT. I load data from flat file to table then I need verification if count between source and target not match send e-mail to me.
Thanks.

We have project in SSIS:
Control Flow
Load Data Flow Task to Copy Data Flow Task to Scrip Task
Data Flow under
Load Data Flow Task has
Flat File Source to Row Count1 to OLE DB Destination (ODS database)
Variable name for Row Count1 is RowCount
Data Flow under

Variable name for Row Count2 is RowNumber
Data Flow under Script Task is code:

We want to verify flat file count should be same as the data load to WIMS database.
Now if I run this job I get the error message:
Error: Failed to lock variable "RowCount" for read access with error 0xC0010001 "The variable cannot be found. This occurs when an attempt is made to retrieve a variable from the Variables collection on a container during execution of the package, and the variable is not there. The variable name may have changed or the variable is not being created.".
My co-work said even I get balance from RowCount1 and Rowcount2 still need to have query from table in Wims database because for SQL server sometimes process counts not same as the data results load in table so need select count(*) from table. How and where I can put at the job.
My design is row count from flat file put one variable then row count from final table put the other variable then send e-mail to me show both variable for testing.
For real job I need if both variables same ok else send me an e-mail.
Any one has any idea? I will very appreciate.
Thanks.

What could be simpler: map a flat file record structure, extract the data, and populate essentially the same flat file record struc in an Oracle table. Let the fun begin.
Specifically: the flat file record struc is fixed length 196 bytes. A particular field consists of 4 bytes of Integer data; IS deals very nicely with the definition, does not appear to be any issue with that. The issue is trying to get the 4 bytes of integer to map and load into the Oracle table. The data type in the flat file def is DT_UI4. The data type in the Oracle target is DT_NUMERIC. One would think that perhaps a simple transform and Viola?! I've defined the transform but does not seem to matter - whatever I try yeilds the same results.
I 've tried many different src/trg data type defs., but all yeild the same results.
Execution Results from debug:
Everything validates and then...
[kcd [8671]] Error: Data conversion failed. The data conversion for column "load_time_min" returned status value 2 and status text "The value could not be converted because of a potential loss of data.".
[kcd [8671]] Error: The "output column "load_time_min" (11050)" failed because error code 0xC0209084 occurred, and the error row disposition on "output column "load_time_min" (11050)" specifies failure on error. An error occurred on the specified object of the specified component.
Any ideas appreciated!
Thanks.

Hi,
I am trying to impliment a SSIS package where data source is a Flat file(.csv) file and destination is a sql server database.
The problem is my data source a flat file which consists of thousands of rows which are manually entered, so there is always a chance that in some rows they may miss a column value while entering data which results in an error.
Example: My flat file has headers like Sln, Name, Age, Designation. While entering data they may miss age and type it as 1,aaa,Consultant,,
Using SSIS package i want to track all row number in the flat file where data is entered wrongly so that i can correct only that row instead of checking all rows each time when my SSIS package throughs an error. I want to get all the row numbers in a sql server database which are wrongly entered.
Any suggestions are sincerly apriciated.
Thanks in advance
Regards,
gcs.

Hi all,
I'm trying to work out how to update a table from a flat file source.
I could use the simple way of using OLE DB Command with
UPDATE <tblName> SET Column1 = ?, Column2 = ?, <etc> WHERE ID = ?
then using the mapping to join the parameter fields.
However, this (maybe!) a slow process when you have potential 500k+ records in the source file (and approx 150 files to process!)
What I would like to do is the following statement but I'm not sure if this is possible?
UPDATE <tblName> SET Column1 = sourceColumn1, Column2 = sourceColumn1, <etc> FROM <sourcefile> WHERE ID = sourceID
I've also thought about importing the sourcefile into a Recordset Destination and trying to use the variable in the SQLCommand but I'm not sure how to do this...
Does anybody have any ideas on how this could work or an alternative solution?
Thanks in advance....

Hello Guys,
I am working in one company and currently I am assigned to new project for Data Migration from company X to our company Y using SSIS. I am totally new and i just completed 5 tutorial which was gien on MSDN website.
Basically client is going to send us first flat file with 1 million records with Header, Detail and Trailer records.
I want to create a Package in such a way that it dumps all this first load into 7 to 8 different tables at a time.
we also have to include functionlity for validation and error check.
On successfull load error file should only return Header and Trailer but no detail records.
If there are any errors then error file should contain Header, Detail records which were unable to load plus trailer which we have to sent back to client.
When 2nd file comes that time we have to check whether this is new records or change (update) one depending on Flag which tells it.
This is basically high level idea of my Package what i need to create. If u guys have any question then let me know.
I know you guys are very experienced one. Anyone of you please give me some detail idea on it I would really appricate it.
I have very limited time line for it.
Thanks

I have a package set up basically with two consecutive data flows. The first flow takes data from an OLE DB Source and stores it into a Flat File Destination. The second flow uses this same flat file as a source, alters the data, and stores the data in the same flat file, overwriting the old file. I set DelayValidation to True on the flat file. Still, here are the error messages I am receiving:
Error: 0xC020200E at DO, Flat File Destination [7676]: Cannot open the datafile "C:Temp.txt".
Error: 0xC004701A at DO, DTS.Pipeline: component "Flat File Destination" (7676) failed the pre-execute phase and returned error code 0xC020200E.
I am new to SSIS, so I'm sure I have a setting wrong or something. Is the problem that SSIS is trying to write to a file from which it is simultaneously reading data?
Thank you.

I’ve got a situation where the columns in a table we’re grabbing from a source database keep changing as we need more information from that database. As new columns are added to the source table, I would like to dynamically look for those new columns and add them to our local database’s schema if new ones exist. We’re dropping and creating our target db table each time right now based on a pre-defined known schema, but what we really want is to drop and recreate it based on a dynamic schema, and then import all of the records from the source table to ours.It looks like a starting point might be EXEC sp_columns_rowset 'tablename' and then creating some kind of dynamic SQL statement based on that. However, I'm hoping someone might have a resource that already handles this that they might be able to steer me towards.Sincerely,
Bryan Ax

I'd like to figure out how to use the @FieldDescription table below as an intermediate table between the @SourceData and @Stops data.
declare @Stop table (StopId int, UserField varchar(20))
declare @FieldDescription table (Label varchar(10), ColumnName varchar(10))
declare @UpdateSource table (HasPathway varchar(10))
insert into @Stop (StopId, UserField)
values (1, 'Yes')
[code]...
I want to update @Stop.UserField with thevalue from @UpdateSource where @UpdateSource.HasPathway=@Stop.UserField...but I need to use the @FieldDescription table to determine how to map the columns.

Hi,
I am trying to create a program that transfers tables to flat files.
At this point in time, I have suceeded in created one that creates delimited files.
However, I am now trying to create fixed-width files as you can do with the SSIS designer, but programatically.
Is there a way to programatically determine the width of a column from the source table? I can not seem to find any kind of function or member that stores this information or allows me to retrieve it.
I know what I need to change in order to set a width for a column, but I just don't know how to find the width without just asking the user to provide one.

Hi,
we have one requirement to run the package daily basis.
The package should run at specific time on that day.
we are using windows schedular for that.
we will have one new flatfile everyday.
Is there any process to attach this file to flat file source dynamically?
The requirement is,
The flat file should be able to read the new flatfile everyday.
we have no option change it manually, the flatfile source should have to take the file automatically at that time.
So that it can take that flatfile and load it into database table.

I am wondering how easy is to check for file locks and have our SSIS Package to wait until file has been release by the process which is using it.
Also, same question when we're writing to a Flat File (or Flat File Destination).

I have some problems with the "Flat File Source" ...

First, a couple of important bits of information. Until last week, I had never touched SISS, and therefore, I know very little about it. I just never had the need to use it...until now. I was able to convert my first 3 flat files to SQL2005 tables by right clicking on "SISS Package" and choosing "SISS Import and Export Wizard". That is the extent of my knowledge! So please, please, please be patient with me and be as descriptive as possible.
I thought I could attach some sample files to this post, but it doesn't look like I can. I'll just paste the information below in two separate code boxes. The first code box is the flat file specifications and the second one is a sample single line flat file similar to what I'm dealing with (the real flat file is over 2 gigs).
My questions are below the sample files.
Code Snippet
Record Length 400
Positions Length FieldName
Record Type 01
1,2 L=2 Record Type (Always "01")
3,12 L=10 Site Name
13,19 L=7 Account Number
20,29 L=10 Sub Account
30,35 L=6 Balance
36,37 L=1 Active
37,41 L=5 Filler
Record Type 02
1,2 L=2 Record Type (Always "02")
3,4 L=2 State
5,30 L=26 Address
31,41 L=11 Filler
Record Type 03
1,2 L=2 Record Type (Always "03")
3,6 L=4 Coder
7,20 L=14 Locator ID
21,22 L=2 Age
23,41 L=19 Filler
Record Type 04
1,2 L=2 Record Type (Always "04")
3,9 L=7 Process
10,19 L=10 Client
20,26 L=6 DOB
26,41 L=16 Filler
Record Type 05
1,2 L=2 Record Type (Always "05")
3,16 L=14 Guarantor
17,22 L=6 Guar Account
23,23 L=1 Active Guar
**There can be multiple 05 records, one for each Guarantor on the account**
and the single line flat file...
Code Snippet
01Site1 12345 0000098765 Y 02NY1155 12th Street 03ELL 0522071678 29 04TestingSmith,Paul071678 05Smith, Jane 445978N 05Smith, Julie 445989N 05Smith, Jenny 445915N 01Site2 12346 0000098766 N 02MN615 Woodland Ct 04InfoJones,Chris 012001 01Site3 12347 0000098767 Y 02IN89 Jade Street 03OWB 6429051282 25 04Screen New,Katie 879500
As you can see, each entry could have any number of records and multiples of some of the record types, with one exception, every entry must have a "01" record and can only have one "01" record. Oh, and each record has a length of 400.
I need to get this information into a SQL 2005 database so I can create a front end for accessing the data. Originally, I wanted one line for each account and have null values listed for entries that don't have a specific record. Now that I've looked at the data again, that doesn't look like a good idea. I think a better way to do it would be to create 5 different tables, one for each record type. However, records 2 through 5 don't have anything I can make a primary key. So here are my questions...
Is it possible to make 5 tables from this one file, one table for each of the record types?
If so, can I copy the Account number in record 01, position 13-19 in each of the subsequent record types (that way I could link the tables as needed)?
Can this be done using the SISS Import and Export Wizard to create the package? If not, I'm going to need some very basic step by step instructions on how to create the package.
Is SISS the best way to do this conversion or is there another program that would be better to use?
I know this is a huge question and I appreciate the help of anyone who boldly decides to help me! Thank you in advance and I welcome anyone's suggestions!

Hi,
I'm new to SQL Server 2005 SSIS. I'm trying to do something very simple, but I cannot figure it out, PLEASE HELP!
I have a flat file, which I read and then insert the data in a database table, that works fine. The problem is that I don't want to insert duplicate records. For example; if I run the package again, it will appent to the table. What I need to do is that if the package runs again, check if the record already exist, based one two columns, date and hour, and do not insert the record.
Thank you,
Aldo

Hi,
I have a simple enough task to complete that I can€™t seem to find the answer to.
The task is this €“
Select table x from the database and write it to a flat file complete with that tables column headings.
Now I€™ve managed to set up an ole db datasource and selected the table and I€™ve also linked it to the flat file output. So now I can generate a flat file from the database. However no column headings appear in the flat file.
I can€™t seem to find anywhere (like a checkbox) that will also output the column headings to the flat file.
Now I can add in Headings manually in the properties of the Flat File Destination object but the columns that appear in the flat file don€™t appear to be in the order that I requested them in the SQL.
So the question is how do I automatically have the column headings appear for flat file output (ideally without me having to manually add them in).
If it can€™t be done and I have to use a vb.net script instead then would anyone have an example script of how to do it?
Thanks in advance for anyone who manages to answer this.
Matt.

I've been working 4 days non stop on this project, lost a complete weekend on it and I totally had it.
Please have a look at this "simple" question:
I have a for each loop that checks for csv files in a folder. The path of the file(s) is stored in a variable varFileName.
So far so good. But then I start with a data flow task and inside that data flow task I need to access one of those csv files at the time whenever it loops.
So my best guess is use a flat file source because that's the only task I see in the list that fits my question.
But the thing is, you set up a connection to a....yes right, a flat source connection and there you have to select a flat file.
But no, I don't want to select ONE file, I need to access them all as the loop goes through all files.
I'm sure this is something easy but I don't see it anymore.
I'm off taking a nap, need sleep
Could someone please point me to a direction?
Many thanks!

I have a SSIS package loading a lot of CSV file, which first line is the column head. Some file are ordered differently. However, package still try to load the file use predefined column order (it seems it doesn't check the head of each file see if it matchs the predefined column order).
Any way to force the package the check each file's head? or I had to manually check it using VB.Net script?

hi all
I have a table which has the paths where the source files need to be collected.
So I have a set of files which I need to collect. So I need to iterate through the result set which retrieves the paths
where the files can be found and set this dynamically to connection string of flat file connection manager.
Can anyone please let me know how to do this.
Can you be a little elaborate as to how we can do this because I am really new to SSIS.
Please help me as I am new to SSIS.

I can do this with Raw File Sources since they allow me to use a variable name as the file path, but I cant seem to do the same with Flat File Sources. Is there a way to change the connection to a Flat File Source on each iteration of a loop? Actually, if this is possible with all types of file sources (like excel files) I would love to know about it too.
I was thinking about renaming the file through a script task but that does not seem like the most elegant solution so decided to see if some one here knows of a more proper way before I go that direction.

I want to read the following file using the Flat File Source flow:
10000 Router
20000 Hub
10000 Switch
30000 Server
40000 Harddisk
Spaces are used between the numbers (e.g. 10000) and the following text (e.g. Router). Each line is temrinated by a {CR}{LF} pair. I would normally think of this as a "fixed width" file.
But in the Flat File connection manager, if I use format "Fixed width", the preview shows a row width of 1 character wide (the first row contains the number "1"; the next row contains "0", and so on for the remaining 3 rows.in the first line) Not what I had in mind. How do I setup SSIS to handle this file in intended maner?
TIA,
Barker
P.S. I never had any trouble with this type of file under Sql 2000 DTS. Also, have you noticed the crappy-looking "bitmap" displayed when one wants to click and define columns for a fixed-width file?

Hi,
I'm using an OLEDBSource to select some data and then putting to in a Flat File destination.
However, when I look at the data in the OLEDBSource, they´re like this:
1. id
2. name
3. address
...but in the flatfile it comes out in the wrong order.
How can I fix this?
Thank you so much.

I have a weird thing happening.
I have an .csv file. When I try to load it into a table, I can do it easily in DTS 2000. But when I am trying to do it in SSIS 2005 with exactly the same settings (like Text qualifier, row delimiter etc.), I am getting an error: "The last row in the sampled data is incomplete. The column or the row delimiter may be missing or the text is qualified incorrectly." I looked at the file and it looks complete to me.
What could be the problem ?
P.S. DTS 2000 is on 32-bit Windows, and SSIS 2005 is on 64-bit Windows 2003. Could that we a problem ?

i am importing a file using the Flat File Data Flow Source, it works fine but seems to miss data records every so often (not entire rows, just records inside the rows). The file has 149 columns and usually has around 15,000 to 20,000 rows.
For example, this is a sample of the input:
AccountNum, CancelDate, CancelReason
123~2/2/08~ADC
345~2/1/08~CCC
789~2/5/08~CRC
After the Flat File Source imports the file I get back:
AccountNum, CancelDate, CancelReason
123~2/2/08~ADC
345~2/1/08~
789~2/5/08~CRC
has anyone ever seen this or heard of this happening. It is usually the same column that misses records and this only happens when it runs from a job (in debug mode it always works fine).

I have a simple SSIS package -> It reads a local text file which has 10 rows of data ( id, name, telephone # ) and puts it into a table.
It uses the "SSIS Flat File source" to read and a "SQL Command" to insert into the table. I can see that it reads line by line and puts each line into one row in my table.
Now, my production data is over 5 GiG of mainframe data and it seems their data is arranged in some hierarchical form.. so the position or arrangement of data in that file is important.
I pulled the data using my package and as far as I can see , my SSIS package pulled one line at a time ( from the flat file) and pushed it into my table. For each row, I also created an identity column in my table to be able to identify the positional arrangement of the hierarchical data and then use relational mappings to suit our business needs.
In all of this, my assumption is -
"SSIS reads one line at a time, inserts to my table and goes down to the next line .
It does NOT read a snapshot of rows from the flat file so as to write them into the table using internal ordering methods based on that particular snapshot "
My question is .. is my assumption correct ?

Hi, all,
I have this SSIS data flow ( Flat file to sql server) that I want to add a step to redirect any "bad" data instead of fail out.
I had the red arrow hocked up to a sql new table to dump the bad data, but the flow still failed.
Here is the first error, and I knew what was wrong. A description field in that line has pipe(|) character in it, which also happen to be the column delimiter in this case.
[Flat File Source [1]] Error: Data conversion failed. The data conversion for column "Column 22" returned status value 4 and status text "Text was truncated or one or more characters had no match in the target code page.".
I knew if I fixed the data, every thing will be fine, but I just want to use this redirect feature of SSIS. Is there a place where I can turn off validation, or do something to make it work?
Thanks!

I am attempting to pull in data from a flat file data source that contains dates in the following format "01012007 10:22" which translates to Month Day Year and Military Time. I want to turn this into a DateTime format so that I can insert it into the proper column. I have a SQL statement which will do this (see bellow), but I can't figgure out how to run the statement on the data before it reaches its destination.
Can anyone help?
The code is:
Code Block
cast(convert(varchar(16),(substring( REPORT_RUN_DATE,1,2 ) + '/' + substring( REPORT_RUN_DATE,3,2 ) + '/' + substring( REPORT_RUN_DATE,5,10 )),1) as datetime) AS REPORT_RUN_DATE

For some reason, when I try to use the Flat File Source and set the record type to Ragged Right it does not seem to recognize 'short' records. It seems to be confused by the CRLF set delimiters and not recognize these in 'some' records. The input does not seem consistent. What am I missing?
