Rsreportserver.config Smtp Password Settings
Dec 22, 2005
Hi,
I wanted to know if there was any way of setting the SMTPAuthenticate in the RSReportServer.config file, so i could connect to a remote SMTP with username and password ?
I am using window 2003 system where smtp is not installed and i don't want to installed it.
If there is another way to change only in Rsreportserver.config file except pick up directory.
thanks in advance

I am just wondering if anyone knows which options are available to you in the RSReportServer.config file for the <Render> tag. I am trying to hide some of the options for certain reports when they are exported.
Thanks in advance.

Hi,
I've just installed the new SQLSRV 2005 Express Adv Ed (ASP.NET 2.0.50727) and also installed the reporting services. Trying to browse the ReportServer website (via inetmgr or //localhost/ReportServer/) returns the following error (using Windows Credentials):
>>The report server has encountered a configuration error. See the report server log files for more information. (rsServerConfigurationError)
Access to the path 'c:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.2Reporting ServicesReportServerRSReportServer.config' is denied.
<<
How can this be fixed? All hints appreciated. Thanks

I am trying to work through the SSRS 2005 Forms Authentication sample and have the form up and running on a W2K3 server. I am able to connect to my SQL Server and enter a username and password for the admin user, but when I return to the form to login, I receive an error on my report server.
When I check my server's event log, I see the following alert:
The Forms extension failed to read its configuration settings from the RSReportServer.config configuration file. The extension is not available to users.
My question is: do I have a permissions problem where some user cannot read the RSReportServer.config? If so, what user do I grant read access?

I cannot determine why only PDF and EXCEL show as export formats from IE, while all of them (XML, CVS, TIFF, etc) show from Visula Studio.
Using Format=IMAGE on the URL launches Tiff, so I know the machine supports it.
I have tried adding Visible="true" with no change.
I tried changing the order of the Extension elements with no change.
All I really want is to get IMAGE (Tif) to show, since PDF strips leading spaces (unacceptable) and whatever the default is (HTML?) doesn't handle overlapping lines and rectangles with the data. TIFF seems to be the only useful view choice!
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Is there a way to modify the RSReportServer.config file with a Web Service call. We want to install an app and have it modify the Renders. We want to remove the Tiff export for example. We also want to add simple headers to Excel. Right now we have to open the file and then make our edits.

How do I specify the SMTP username and password for reporting services? It seems like I can specify one for SQLmail, but not reporting services? How the heck is anyone going to use the email feature of reporting services without being able to specify smtp credentials or making their mail server an open relay for spam??

We have SSRS 2005. The install put virtual directories under the website we wanted. We upgraded from Standard to Enterprise, and I put in virtual directories under the default web site so that the upgrade would work just fine. It did.
So, now I have 2 web addresses accessing the same database backend and the same files/folders on the same web server.
Someone added a mapping for .jsx extension and chose select all in the next dialog box and Reporting Services (under that web site) has not worked since. However, the one under the default web site works perfectly well. That leads me to believe that the files are fine, and the connection to the database is fine. I have tried deploying a report and it works.
The error I get from the http://server/reports interface is: Unable to connect to remote server
The error I get from the log files (ReportServerWebApp_) is:

Since it works with the same files and database on the default web site, and not on the website I want it to, I figure its an IIS setting or config problem/issue. I have looked at all the settings in the Properties for both Reports and ReportServer for both websites, but dont see a difference. I have also looked at the settings in the Properties for both web sites and while I know there are a few differences, there should be. (I did try to set them the same just to know, and it still didnt work). I have also deleted and recreated my Virtual Directories under the website I want it to work, with no success.
Anyone have any other suggestions, or links, or anything?
Thanks!

I wanted to know if there is a way to enforce security settings on SQL 8 Server. Specifically password lengths, expiration,e tc. These servers run on a Windows Platform, so if it is not possible to enforce passwords at the database level can the windows passwords parameters be enforced for the server.
Also, how would I be able to find the last changes made to the tables within the database.

We would like to use the SQL Server 2005 Express at our customers.
But now we have to meet the local security settings of the PC.
What is happening with the database users password (e.g. sa) when the "Maximum password age" in the "local security settings" for the password policy is to >0 (e.g. 30 days)?
Because this cause a frequently change of the passwords at the customers!!!!!!

Just downloaded and installed the VS 2008 Express and created/tested some websites. I have done several aspx websites using VS 2005 during the last 2 years. Still I don't quite understand the details of coding the database connection and DataBing. For example, what does 'providerName',and Integrated Security really mean? Why in the Web.config file these are providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" and Integrated Security=True? Why in Default.aspxthere are both ntegrated Security=True;and USER ID=WEB; Password=webwebweb1". I know these may deal with the authentication mode of my SQL Serverdatabase. For the VS 2008 Express and SQL Server 2005 Express, I installed in my XP home PC, I used the file system websites, If I upgrade to XP Pro and install IIS web server, and use SQL Server 2005, what might be different? Jeffrey Web.config <connectionStrings> <add name="NorthwindConnectionString" connectionString="Data Source=D5MRY6G1SQLExpress;Initial Catalog=Northwind;Integrated Security=True" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" /> </connectionStrings>Default.aspx <asp:SqlDataSource ID="SqlDataSource1" runat="server" ConnectionString="Data Source=D5MRY6G1SQLExpress;Initial Catalog=Northwind;Integrated Security=True; USER ID=WEB; Password=webwebweb1" ProviderName="<%$ ConnectionStrings:NorthwindConnectionString.ProviderName %>"MasterDetail.aspx <asp:SqlDataSource ID="SqlDataSource2" runat="server" ConnectionString="<%$ ConnectionStrings:NorthwindConnectionString %>"

I got a problem when developing SSIS packages.
For security reason, the sensitive information must be encrypted, and they should be configurable dynamically (by an ASP.NET application).
so I tried several ways to achieve this,
1. use SSIS Package Configurations to generate an XML config file
It's a convenient way to generate config file. but the passwords are not encrypted (or I don't know how).
2. use Variables and Property Expressions
I can set variables by reading from an external custom xml config file which was content encrypted (read and decrypt the custom config file in a script task). but in a FTP Connection Manager entity, the Password property can not be set via Property Expressions.
Is any way to store password encrypted to an external file?

Currently have a single hard coded file path to the SSRS config file which parses the file and provides the reporting services web service url. My question is how would i run this same query against 100s of servers that may or may not share the same file path as the one hard coded ?
Is there a way to query the registry to find the location of the config file of any server ? which could be on D, E, F, H, etc.
I know I can string together the address followed by "reports" and named instance if needed, but some instances may not have used the default virtual directory name (Reports).
Am I going about this the hard way ? Is there a location where the web service url exists in a table ? I could not locate anything in the Reporting service database. Basically need to inventory all of my reporting services url's.

Hi
I'm trying to send email from my rss script. It seems that the script cannot create an SmtpClient instance because of SmtpPermission problems, but I just can't find where I need to enable the SmtpPermission. I've tried many things, including web.config and rssrvpolicy.config.
Here's a code sample:
Public Sub Main
Dim smtpClient As New System.Net.Mail.SmtpClient
End Sub
and here's the output when I execute the above script under rs.exe against my local report server
Unhandled exception:
Request for the permission of type 'System.Net.Mail.SmtpPermission, System, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral,PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089' failed.
Any ideas?
Many thanks

Has anyone ever set up sql mail through smtp. I am trying to automate my server and not having to much success as i cannot use exchange for company reasons. I understand that i am able to set this up through outlook and not outlook express.
this is what i have tried to do:
1. Remove any MAPI application (Full Outlook or Microsoft Messaging from control panel). It is important that there are no mapi profiles on the server.
2. Logon to the SQL server using the SQLService account
3. Check that Outlook Express is the default Mail client (done from IE/tools/Internet Options/Programs)
4. Check that there is a mail account configured, pointing to an SMTP server, say aklexch1 (just put bogus stuff in for the POP server)
5. test that you can send a message (ignoring the receive errors) from Outlook Express to your @advantagegroup.co.nz address
Only after step 5 is working should you start testing from SQL
6. In SQL Mail config you will not see any profiles in the list but just type 'Default'
7. Create an SQL Operator with an @advantagegroup.co.nz address and click the test button
nb:i am setting this up on an win2000 server.

I have a package protected by a password - I am already unhappy that to get it to use the configuration file to change connection strings for the production servers I have had to hardcode the password into the config file - very insecure!
However, the package now deploys correctly to the production server and will run from there OK, but NOT if scheduled as a SQL Server Agent Job. Thus is because however often I edit the command line to include the password after the DECRYPT switch (which it has prompted me for when I click on the command line tab), the Job Step will not retain it.
If I open it up after I have edited it and closed it, the password has disappeared.
I know that if I run dtexec plus the code in the Command Line tab (with the password), the package runs OK.
This is driving me insane!
I have read all the other posts and so I tried replacing the SSIS package step with a CmdExec step and pasting that code into there - then I get an OLEDB error..
The code I use is:
DTEXEC /SQL "ImportRateMonitoringTables" /SERVER servername /DECRYPT password /CONFIGFILE "D:Microsoft SQL ServerSSISDeploymentsRateMonitoringImportTasksDeploymentImportRateMonitoringTables_Production.dtsConfig" /MAXCONCURRENT " -1 " /CHECKPOINTING OFF /REPORTING E
and I get
SSIS Error Code DTS_E_OLEDBERROR. An OLE DB error has occurred. Error code: 0x8000FFFF
although the same code executes perfectly from a command prompt.
Please does anyone have any experience with a similar problem and if so, how did you get round it?
Thank you

I am receiving the following error message when attempting to create a new SQL Authenticated login id.
Password validation failed. The password does not meet the requirements of the password filter DLL. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 15119)
I have four servers all running SQL Server 2005 SP2 on Windows 2003 Ent. SP1. Of the four servers, only one received the above error message using the same TSQL below.
CREATE LOGIN TEST_LOGIN WITH PASSWORD = 'pvif9dal' MUST_CHANGE, CHECK_EXPIRATION = ON
All four servers are in the same domain, which if I understand correctly, the password policies are therefore inherited at the OS level by the domain. The password being used is within the password policies of the domain.
Any ideas as to a root cause?
