I got on my developer computer one instance of msde 2000. I want to test sql server express 2005, can I install it without "scrap" my other instance of 2000?

I need SQL Server 2000 on the server, where SQL Server 2005 has been already installed. So I install SQL Server 2000 Instance as Named one. And everything is ok now when I connect locally from that server (SQL Server 2000 Instance is accessable both in SQL Server 2000 Enterprise Manager and SQL Server 2005 management Studio) and Default (SQL Server 2005 Instance) also works. But when I try to connect from SQL Server 2005 Management Studio (located on the other server) - only default instance is successfully connected, the named one - give an error:

For SQL Server 2005 Remote Connections are allowed both for TCP/IP and Named Pipes.
Default TCP Port: 1433
In SQL Server 2000 I didn't find where to allow remote connections.
After insallation in Server Network Utility - default TCP port - 0, in Client Network Utility - 1433.
I have already tried to replace 0 with 1433 - nothing changes,
and use 1434 both in Server and Client Network Utility - nothing changes.
I need a remote connect to SQL Server 2000 Instance.
I hope the answer exists. Thanks to any ideas.

I have 2 MSDE 2000 Instances installed on Windows 2003 Server STd w/ SP1.
The application relating to the default instance is being upgraded and will require SQL 2005 Express.
What is the best approach? So the named instance of MSDE 2000 still functions correctly.
Upgrade default instance of MSDE to SQL 2005, or install SQL 2005 Express to own path and restore the DB accross? Then remove the Default Instance of MSDE 2000.
Both MSDE 2000 Instances are listed in Add/Remove Programs.

Hi I would like to ask If its possible to have installed MSDE 2000 and SQL 2005 Express on the same machine. My computer uses MSDE 2000 for one application and I would like to install SQL 2005 Express for my own application. I would like to ask it will be a problem before I install it.

I have seen information on the web about running two versions of SQL at the same time on the same server but was wondering any tricks of the trade regarding it. The main recommendation that I have seen is to have SQL 2000 SP4 running first as the default instance (which is my current situation on a development server) and then install SQL 2005 as a named instance on it. Should the SQL 2005 installation place its files in a dedicated directory (ie, C:SQL2005) as opposed to the default directory that the installation would normally write to, thus not overwriting any SQL 2000 system files? Any other recommendations?

Ok I upgraded an xp machine running to sql express 2005 by doing the inplace upgrade. The upgrade process went great, after the upgrade I could connect to the databases that had been upgraded using the management studio.
BUT.
When I try to connect to the databases using the third party software which had always worked in the past I get the error when trying to access from both the client and server machines.
[DBNETLIB][Connection open()).]SQL Server does not exist or access denied.
I then tried setting up SQL express 2005 on another xp station just to test how things worked if it wasn't an upgrade. I installed, attached the databases (which I copied to that local machine) and I was able to connect to them through the third party software from the server machine, but not client machines. The client machines gave me the same error as above.
Does anyone have any ideas, I have been talking to the third party support but haven't gotten any where yet... does anyone have any suggestions?

I have a Windows XP and 2003 server; we have installed SQL 2005 Express on it but have an application that installs MSDE 2000 to connect to an application. After the MSDE 2000 is installed we can no longer see the instance across the network. If we uninstall the SQL 2005 express version we can see the Instance in MSDE 2000.
Is there any compatibility issue with install MSDE 2000 after SQL 2005 has been installed.

I am having issues trying to do an in place upgrade of msde 2000 to sql express 2005. When I try to upgrade it bombs when it reaches "Running action to shutdown instance(Run As Normal User)" with the following error:
Service 'computername' could not be stopped. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to stop system services. The error code is (16386).
I've tried an upgrade on a clean test machine, and it goes through without any problems. I am logged into an account with local admin permissions. If any one has any ideas, they would be appreciated.

Is it possible to have both servers installed and not having issues?
I am really new to this.
At my company we have both installed. At home I created a backup of a database in SQL Server 2005 but can not restore it here were we have both.
The message I got is: System.Data.SqlClient.SqlError: The backed-up database has on-disk structure version 611. The server supports version 539 and cannot restore or upgrade this database.
So I think it seems that even though I'm trying to restore it in 2005 this version still uses the old server or something.
I hope I made it clear enough.

I'm trying to upgrade the Default Instance of MSDE 2000 Release A which is installed with Mixed Mode and strong password to SQL Server 2005 Express in a Windows 2000 Server with SP4. On the Upgrade Logon Information screen, if I select SQL Server Authentication Mode, it will give me this message:
SQL Server Setup Cannot Upgrade the specified instance by using SQL Server Credential. You must use Windows Authentication credential for the upgrade.

Apparently you cannot go backwards. Once 2005 Express is installed, even removing it does not allow you to setup MSDE 2000 again. So there is no "trying it out" option.
Unfortunately, our software does not use 2005 Express. I tried it out, and now have a useless testing workstation that can't have MSDE 2000 installed again.
Any ideas on how to break the chain here are welcome.

Recently we have migrated our application from MSDE 2000 to SQL Server Express 2005(SP 1). This has significantly reduced the performance of our Windows.NET application which is developed using C#.
For example : While logging in to the application two databases are being attached.
Time taken in MSDE: 16 secs
Time taken in SQL Server Express 2005 : 58 secs
Also note performance is degraded for normal screens where data is retrived from database using inline queries.
Questions:
1) Is there any special(optimum) configuration(installation parameters) while installing the SQL Server Express 2005 setup?
2) Is there any query optimization to be done w.r.t SQL Server Express 2005 ?
We highly appreciate any help towards resolving the above problem.

i am working on upgrading the clients and server computers from 2000 MSDE to 2005 SQL Express Adv. Plan to upgrade using the template.ini.
i can find the version of sql server running on th server by @@version but how do i find the version of client connctivity components the computer has installed in order to ugrade?
1. somehow i need to know whether to upgrade a client computer CONNECTIVITY COMPONENTS from 2000 to 2005?

I installed SQL 2000 Client Portion in my local computer: No server functionality. I selected my computer name as an instance name. Installation went OK.
Now, I am trying to install MSDE in my computer. Error comes in early part of installation: It says, "The instance name specified is not valid"
Please, any advise and suggestion.

We would like to install Sql 2005 Enterprise Edition (including database engine, reporting service, integration service and analysis service) as a sepearte instance on a server which already has Sql 2000 with reporting services and analysis services. We do not want to disturb the existing sql 2000 setup.
If we do that then what will happen to my earlier sql 2000 reporting service? Will it be upgraded to sql 2005 reporting service? I heard that reporting services are instance unaware application. Where will be the default reporting service database available?

For the first time, I want to set up the configuration of my SQL Server Management Studio Express (SSMSE) to allow me in doing the non-User-Instance/ADO.NET 2.0 programming from my VB 2005 Express. The SSMSE and VB 2005 Express are in my Windows XP Pro PC that is part of our NT 4 LAN System in our office. I read the article "How to configure SQL Server 2005 to allow remotre connections" in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/914277/ about (i) "Enable remote connections for SQL Server 2005 Express", (ii) Enable the SQL Server Browser service", (iii) Create exception in Windows Firewall, and (iv) Create an exception for the SQL Server Browser service in Windows Firewall. I entered the SQL Server Surface Area Configuration and I could not decide what options I should take for doing the non-User-Instance/ADO.NET 2.0 programming from my VB 2005 Express. I have the following questions on the page of "Minimize SQL Server 2005 Surface Area":
(1) I saw "Configure Surface Area for localhost [change computer]". I clicked on [change computer] and I saw the

Should I choose the "Local computer" or the "Remote computer" option?

I hope someone can pointmein the right direction, please. TIA.Basically, I got a Vista OS machine to test my VB6 app on it as someof my clients will be switching over in the coming months. I went toa local Circuit City during early business hours in the middle of theweek and I installed my application on each of 5 PC's on the newVistaOS (Tuesday, when it was released). I had read that MSDE 2000, whichI normally use as my DB is not supported on Vista so I had downloadedand was using SQL Express 2005. Each system had at least a 1.9 GHzdual core processor and 1 GB of RAM. One process in my program findsrecords in one table that do not match records in another table andthen reports those un-matched entries. On my development machine(laptop with 1 GB of RAM, XP Pro SP2, MSDE 2000 (current SP), 2 GHzCentrino (IIRC)) the process takes less than 30 seconds consistently.On each of those 5 systems at Circuit City the process took 5 minutes(on each of 3 HP machines, a1700n, a1720n, a1730n, and 11 minutes oneach of two Gateway systems (the model numbers of which I forget atthe moment). Each of these computers should be much faster than mylaptop, and some had twice the RAM, and all had SATA or SATA IIdrivesinstead of my piddly 5400 laptop drive, I would have thought they'dall be faster but were abysmally slow.So, seeing a huge difference in the time, and to try to keep thisshort and sweet, I fired up another computer I have, running XP SP2,on 512 MB RAM, AMD Athlon 2300+. First I loaded MSDE 2000 and myapplication and ran the process. < 30 seconds on each of multipleruns. Second, I unloaded MSDE 2000 and installed SQL Express 2005andmoved the DB to it (sp_attach_db) which caused some upgrading(messages reported in OSQL about update/upgrade). When it was done Irebooted, to be sure, and the ran the program and the process again.On the same data, on the same computer, the process took 7-9 minutesconsistently on each of several runs. This makes this part of theapplication unusable, and even the simple stuff like grabbing asinglerecord from the DB (maybe 5 columns of no more than 500 bytes total)is noticeably slower on the SQL Express 2005 than on MSDE 2000.So, the problem seems to be with my interaction with the DB. I amusing ADO 2.8 in VB 6 (SP 6). I have another application that wants to use MSDE 2000 (already tried using SQL Express 2005, but it won't install). My question is, can both of these be installed on the same server and running at the same time without any problems? Thanks!

The box I am trying to connect to is running two instances of SQL Server.
There is a SQL Server 2005 instance which is the default. There is a SQL Server 2000 instance which is named 'SQLSERVER'.
I can connect to the SQL Server 2000 instance no problem:<add key="ConnectionString" value="server=MYPCSQLSERVER;database=mydatabase;user id=****;password=****" />
However, I am having trouble connecting to the Default SQL Server 2005 instance. I have tried:
<add key="ConnectionString" value="server=MYPC;database=mydatabase;user id=****;password=****" />
but it doesn't work. I have tried explicitly setting SQL Server 2005 to use port 1434 (as SQL Server 2000 is running on port 1433), and then used:
<add key="ConnectionString" value="server=MYPC,1434;database=mydatabase;user id=****;password=****" />
but this doesn't work either.
Am I mssing something here? Any help much appreciated

I have a query that worked fine on MSDE 2000. The query evaluates a date using which is written between ''. Ex '1-1-1970'
Now I detached and attached the database to a SQL Express instance and ran the query but it fails with the error:
The conversion of a char data type to a datetime data type resulted in an out-of-range datetime value.
When I remove '' around the dates in the query, all works fine. Is this because of a diffrence between MSDE 2000 and SQL Express?
By the way. I am using the sql.net library which 'creates the query for me'.

Hello everybody, on my first post on this forum
I just installed SQL Server Express 2005 (server) and created default instance SQLEXPRESS, so that, when I want to access in remote mode, the server conn string is: <servername>SQLEXPRESS
But I have been told there is one way to configure SQL Server so that only one instance is allowed, so you dont need to specify any. If this was true, I would only need to give 'servername' to access remotely.
Is this true? How can I achieve this? Will it be possible to doing it after having installed software, or do I have to uninstall and install it again?
Sorry if this is too basic, I am just having first contact with SQL Server

HiWe have just migrated to SQL 2005 database.We backup up our SQL database to disk, then backup files to tape usingBckupExec 10.1.The only snag is that BackupExec uses MSDE2000 to manage jobs etc soit will want to install a MSDE2000 on the server that has SQL 2005 onit !!Backupexec Support tell me that it will be fine to have two version ofSQL install on the server, is that the case?Naturally, I am concerned about DLL conflicts and breaking my SQL 2005serverCan any one shed any light on this?ThanksRC

While I've received no responses I'm beginning to assume that an .mdf file created by mssql 2005 cannot be attached to mssql 2000. So I have a few questions...How do I set Visual Studio to create the aspnetdb file using an instance of msde instead of sql server express 2005? I've already tried changing the Instance name under Tools...Options...Database Tools...Data Connections to my msde instance but when I create a new site and use the the website configuration tool a sql 2005 db is still created in the App_Data folder.Do I need to uninstall 2005 express? Manually create and place a new .mdf file in the App_Data folder?

i have both server instances installed on same machine, 1st is sql 2k enterprise and 2nd is sqlExpress 2005.
all was working fine till today, i renamed a catalog in the express2005 instance. the reason for this renaming was a duplicate catalog name in the 2k and in the 2005 so when i backup my dbs one is overwriting the other because of the same file name.
after this rename i started to get some errors in the application so i decided to rename it back to its original name and relocate the backup destination to other folder.
now the situation in that i cant login any more to the 2005 server, when i login to servsqlexpress2005 (via manager or via odbc) i see always the 2k server.
i tried to login to any server name like .sqlexpress2005 or whatever i always get to see the 2k catalogs only.
in proccess list i see both sqlserv.exe proccesses, also in services all is working fine, i only cant access to this server in any way.
PLEASE HELP!!!

I am attempting to install SQL Express 2005 on a laptop that already has MS Sql Server installed.
I downloaded the SQLEXPR_TOOLKIT.EXE from Microsoft's website and let it go through its installation routine accepting all the default answers.
When I open SQL Server Management Studio Express, I can only connect to the SQL 2000 instance. I have issued the 'SELECT @@VERSION' command, and When I try to connect to the instance COMPUTERNAMESQLEXPRESS, the following error message is displayed:

When I go to remove SQL Express 2005 using the add/remove programs, there is a check box that says
"Remove SQL Server 2005 instance components"
and in the box underneath where it lists all the instances it says: "No instances have been installed"

I have just started to create a new web project using the new VS 2005, but just discovered that my ISP has not yet converted to SQL Server 2005 and uses 2000 MSDE.
My first question is, assuming I don't use any new SQL Server 2005 features will there be any problems in using SQL 2000? Can I create/ reports and use the reporting services, or will I have to make 2 versions of my application?
2nd question is: I have to use their database name and userid. To me, this means changing every form that connects to SQL Server from my local information. Is there a way to make this dynamic so that I can change the DB name, userid, pw, etc. without creating 2 or more versions of this Web application?

Or will Express only work with ASP.Net 2.0?My MSDE database has simple SPs (no functions), and straight forward tables - can I just use DTS from Enterprise Manager to transfer this from MSDE to SQL Express, or create a backup, and import that into SQL Express 2005?Also, there was a sort of Enterprise Manager available for SQL Server 2005 Express at one point - does anyone know where to find that?Thanks for any pointers/help.Mark
