Is anyone out there using Unix/Java/Sun app server to connect to SQL Server via JDBC? If so, what drivers are you using? We are currently testing with WebLogic's BEA JDBC driver. Does anyone have any feedback on it?

We see an unusual case where a query seems to be taking a long time (more than 30 minutes) as shown by the Java thread dump (below) - however the SQL server DB does'nt show any corresponding Connection for the query at the lower layer.
The JDBC layer seems to be "in progress" as far as processing the results of the query are concerned. If the Connection was dropped or had a failure we should have seen a corresponding SQLException in the JDBC layer - which is also not the case.
Any tips on how to debug this? Is there a timeout set on the JDBC Connection which causes it to wait before it detects any failures?
thanks

I have a SSIS package that I have scheduled to run (under SQL Server Agent jobs) and when I check its history, it shows it being invoked regularly, and with no errors. The problem is, nothing is actually happening. I can load up the job in MS Visual Studio, and run it, and it runs fine, and takes care of the data transfer. The data is not getting transferred when it runs as a job under SQL Server Agent though the logs show that job was run, and completed with no errors.
I have another package that is similarly configured and does run correctly, and I have been checking the two packages to see what the difference in configuration is, but I don't see anything. All the package in question is, is a single foreach container that gets all the files in a directory, adds them as flatfiles to a database, and then moves them to an archiving directory.

Hi everybody,
I have a very strange problem. I have installed MS WS2003 SP2 and MS SQL 9.0.3054 SP2.
I have database dbTraceIT with data file on D drive and log file on E drive. If I run T-SQL command:
use dbTraceIT
go
dbcc checkdb
or Integration Services Package (task: Check Database Integrity Task, developed with MS VS)
this comand/or task has generated the hard disk errors on D drive. The chkdsk tool reports errors when hdd index verification has been completed. After hdd errors€™ repairing, if I run checkdb T-sql command the situation is repeated again.
Question: is it a bug or something different? Do you have similar disk error if you use e.g. Integration Service Packages (for instance index rebuild or whatever)?
Regards,
Dariusz
PS
Steps to reproduce
Find any DB on your MS SQL. Run chkdsk command on hard drive where DB€™s data file is stored. Verify that everything is OK.
Run t-sql command
use dbTraceIT
go
dbcc checkdb
3. Run chkdsk again. It should show hdd errors.

I'm experiencing some frustration with my active/passive SQL cluster not running my .DTSX packages. I am hoping someone can shed some light on what I need to do.
I've created some .DTSX packages with the SQL Server Business Intel Dev Studio. I initially built & tested these packages in a non-SQL cluster environment without any problems. I'm now re-creating them to work on our SQL cluster. If I run the package through the Dev Studio it works great.
The packages basically grab .txt files from one of the shared drives (which is a resource of the sql cluster group) and imports the data into the one of the databases. The database does not have any special settings (right-click -> new database... -> enter name -> click ok).
I've setup a SQL Server Agent Job with 1 step with the following properties.
Step name: I Offices
Type: SQL Server Integration Services Package
Run as: SQL Agent Service Account
Package source: File system
Package: G:ImportRAGFLOffices.dtsx
When I run the SQL Server Agent Job through MSSQL Server Management Studio (right-click -> start job) I get an error on "Execute job 'RAGFL TestJob'".
These are the 2 messages that show up when I view the history of the SQL Server Agent job.

When I execute a long running procedure, I get timeout errors when other users try to execute other procedures with UPDATE or INSERT statements.
I suspect that the other procedures are trying to execute DML statements on tables that are locked by the long running procedure.
I have a sharred trigger on all my tables that creates and updates records in tables AuditLogDetails and AuditLogParent for keeping a log of modifications. I suspect that tables AuditoLogDetails and AuditLogParent are locked by the long running procedure.
How can I change the LOCKING behavior of the long running procedure to fix the time out errors that I get?
The long running procedure is displayed below.

Hi,
I have stumbled on a problem with running a large number of SSIS packages in parallel, using the €œdtexec€? command from inside an SQL Server job.
I€™ve described the environment, the goal and the problem below. Sorry if it€™s a bit too long, but I tried to be as clear as possible.
The environment:
Windows Server 2003 Enterprise x64 Edition, SQL Server 2005 32bit Enterprise Edition SP2.
The goal:
We have a large number of text files that we€™re loading into a staging area of a data warehouse (based on SQL Server 2k5, as said above).
We have one €œmain€? SSIS package that takes a list of files to load from an XML file, loops through that list and for each file in the list starts an SSIS package by using €œdtexec€? command. The command is started asynchronously by using system.diagnostics.process.start() method. This means that a large number of SSIS packages are started in parallel. These packages perform the actual loading (with BULK insert).
I have successfully run the loading process from the command prompt (using the dtexec command to start the main package) a number of times.
In order to move the loading to a production environment and schedule it, we have set up an SQL Server Agent job. We€™ve created a proxy user with the necessary rights (the same user that runs the job from command prompt), created an the SQL Agent job (there is one step of type €œcmdexec€? that runs the €œmain€? SSIS package with the €œdtexec€? command).
If the input XML file for the main package contains a small number of files (for example 10), the SQL Server Agent job works fine €“ the SSIS packages are started in parallel and they finish work successfully.
The problem:
When the number of the concurrently started SSIS packages gets too big, the packages start to fail. When a large number of SSIS package executions are already taking place, the new dtexec commands fail after 0 seconds of work with an empty error message.
Please bear in mind that the same loading still works perfectly from command prompt on the same server with the same user. It only fails when run from the SQL Agent Job.
I€™ve tried to understand the limit, when do the packages start to fail, and I believe that the threshold is 80 parallel executions (I understand that it might not be desirable to start so many SSIS packages at once, but I€™d like to do it despite this).
Additional information:
The dtexec utility provides an error message where the package variables are shown and the fact that the package ran 0 seconds, but the €œMessage€? is empty (€œMessage: €œ).
Turning the logging on in all the packages does not provide an error message either, just a lot of run-time information.
The try-catch block around the process.start() script in the main package€™s script task also does not reveal any errors.
I€™ve increased the €œmax worker threads€? number for the cmdexec subsystem in the msdb.dbo.syssubsystems table to a safely high number and restarted the SQL Server, but this had no effect either.
The request:
Can anyone give ideas what could be the cause of the problem?
If you have any ideas about how to further debug the problem, they are also very welcome.
Thanks in advance!

Hi all,
We've just stumbled on a 1.0 version incompatibility with the JDBC specs.
Problem: A table with SMALLINT column. According to JDBC specs version 3.0
(p.B-179) and 4.0 (p.221)), the value should be converted to Integer type.
Unfortunatelly we get a Short object :(
Now, I remember, this case was also affecting old JSQLConnect driver from
DataDirect. Could that problem sneak to new MS driver too?
Please let me know any resolution to this problem if exists.
The issue has not been fixed in CTP 1.1 version. Any ideas if it can be fixed??
Cheers,
Piotr

I've got an import app written in Java. One table I'm importing from contains 22 million records. When I run the app in a 2000 environment, I have my max heap set at 512, and the table gets imported. When I run in a 2005 environment, I have to change the max heap to 1152 or it will error out with a similiar error:
com.microsoft.sqlserver.jdbc.SQLServerException: The system is out of memory. Use server side cursors for large result sets:Java heap space. Result set size:854,269,999. JVM total memory size:1,065,484,288. (<--this is with max heap at 1024)
what is the difference between the 2000 and 2005 JDBC that I have to set max heap in one and not the other?

Hi All,
I am in the process of moving from a 32-bit SQL Server 2005 Enterprise (9.0.3054) to a 64-bit SQL Server 2005 Enterprise (9.0.3054 with 4 CPUs and 8GB of memory on Win 2003 SP2) and the process has been very frustrating to say the least. I am having a problem with packages that I created on my 64-bit SQL Server. I am importing a few tables from the 32-SQL Server into the 64-bit SQL Server using the Task --> Import to create the package.
Sometimes when I am creating a package I get the following error in a message box:
SQL Server Import and Export Wizard
The SSIS Runtime object could not be created. Verify that DTS.dll is available and registered. The wizard cannot continue and it will terminate.
Additional information: Attempted to read or write protected memory. This is often an indication that other memory is corrupt. (System.Windows.Forms)
Other times when I run a package that has run successfully before I get the following error:
Faulting application dtexecui.exe, version 9.0.3042.0, stamp 45cd726d, faulting module unknown, version 0.0.0.0, stamp 00000000, debug? 0, fault address 0x025d23f0.
Other times I get this error message:
.NET Runtime version 2.0.50727.1433 - Fatal Execution Engine Error (79FFEE24) (80131506)
And still other times
The package appears to hang when running. By this I mean that the Package Execution Progress shows progress up to a point then it just stops. (The package takes about 17 seconds to run normally) CPU usage is at 1% and the package cannot be stopped.
I have deleted and re-created the package several times and I have also re-installed the service pack on the SQL Server (9.0.3054) but that did not help.
Does anyone have any other suggestions to try?
Thanks.

Hey guys .. I am trying to run SSIS on the WIn2k3 .. The server is a 64 bit machine. I could not find Db2 drivers for a 64 bit one .. any clues as to how , I can find it. By the way .. I have been running the package in 32 bit mode for now .. which I dont think is a very good idea.
Any suggestions are most welcome ..

Hi,
I have an ODBC question. They say that to use SQL server 7.0 'tools', one must use ODBC 3.70 drivers. Is there anywhere where I can find a list of these 'tools' that will need these drivers?
Thanks

Can someone tell me what to do. I can't get analysis services to let me access my database, which are *mdf files a friend sent me.

Okay, this is a weird question/problem. I have a 64 bit database server running on 64 bit Windows. This is just fine until I moved a 32 bit database over to it. My DB is trying to get some reporting to work and discovered that there are no ODBC drivers for Excel on this new 64 bit box. Are there 64 bit drivers for MS Excel? And access for that matter? If so, where are they?
Thanks.

I am trying to load a Fox Pro file which I used to be able to load before I installed 64 bit Vista. I'm using ver 9 of the fox pro driver. I don't know if it's a driver problem or something else I am doing wrong.
Here's the error msg:
SSIS Error Code DTS_E_OLEDBERROR. An OLE DB error has occurred. Error code: 0x80040154.
An OLE DB record is available. Source: "Microsoft OLE DB Service Components" Hresult: 0x80040154 Description: "Class not registered".
Error: 0xC020801C at Load Country, OLE DB Source [1]: SSIS Error Code DTS_E_CANNOTACQUIRECONNECTIONFROMCONNECTIONMANAGER. The AcquireConnection method call to the connection manager "C:Usersjohn.church.LLCDesktopMaxMinAccountingSystem DatabaseAccountingSystem DatabaseAccountingSystem.DBC" failed with error code 0xC0202009. There may be error messages posted before this with more information on why the AcquireConnection method call failed.
But then it also says something about registering a class. I'm a .net moron so I'm not sure what that means.
Any thoughts?
Thanks.

I have a lot of client machines that do not have the SQL Server ODBC driver installed. Without having to install SQL Server client on their computers, I'd much prefer to just install the driver itself. Where on earth do I get it? The microsoft website is about the most confusing site when it comes to looking for driver downloads.

Hello,
We're upgrading to SQL Server 7.0 and need to update all our clients with the latest version of the ODBC and SQL Server Drivers. Can someone tell
how to update just these drivers? We tried to use the latest MDAC executable, but it broke applications on at least one client, so we were hoping
to narrow it down to just ODBC and SQL Server.
Thanks,
Dan Holland

Hi all,This should be easy, but it has me pulling my hair out.I have a SQL 7 server running on NT server 4 with all the patches andupdates for both. I cannot seem to get the openrowset to run againstan oracle server, try as I might to install the drivers from oracle. The first error I got said to install the drivers, so I did; now itsays 'msdaora' bla bla TNS: could not resolve service name. I havetried the sql statement on another server and it works there. Does ithave anything to do with the different 'Homes' that oracle wants toinstall it's drivers into? I have installed and uninstalled thedrivers, different versions, different configurations at least 300times. What am I missing? Thanks for your help.Pachydermitis

Hi all
For some reason, my Excel / Access drivers have disappeared from the list of available data sources when running the Import wizard or when trying to create a dts package. They are installed on the machine as I can see them through the ODBC Administrator. I have googled extensively, found some posts relating to TimeSlips (not relevant as not installed), re-installing MDAC.
Having done all the relevant stuff (updating to latest MDAC), still not coming up. Installed SQL 2005 Management Studio thinking that may help. Still nothing. Can someone please give me some advice, APART FROM RE-INSTALLING OS.
How does Import wizard pickup the available drivers, any registry settings...? Currently running XP SP2 with all the latest updates.
Need to get data uploaded to customer site from Excel spreadsheet. So any help / advice would be greatly appreciated!
TIA
Regan

Hello everyone,
I'm running into an unusual situation with 64 bit SSRS and Sybase drivers and I'm hoping someone has a similar scenario. This isn't the usual OLE DB/ODBC parameter problem.
Our first issue was that we had 32 bit sybase (12.5) drivers installed on our 64 bit machine and SSRS Report Server could not utilize drivers. We resolved this by installing the 15.0 64 bit drivers (the only Sybase 64 bit drivers we know of).
The real problem is as follows:
In SSRS, we can design reports with parameters. BIDS prevents utilizing named parameters while connecting to a database via ODBC or OLE DB (I'm not sure if this is an ODBC standard or if it was just coded this way to avoid problems). Prior to our new server (and new 64 bit drivers) we were always able to use unnamed parameters. We were able to get all of our reports to work with the question mark syntax.
The new 15.0 drivers apparently do not support this same implementation of unnamed parameters (using ? used to work with 12.5 drivers but now we get an error).
[---> System.Data.Odbc.OdbcException: ERROR [ZZZZZ] [Sybase][ODBC Driver][Adaptive Server Enterprise]There is no host variable corresponding to the one specified by the PARAM datastream. This means that this variable '@dr_t_a0' was not used in the preceding DECLARE CURSOR or SQL command.]
If I open the RDL file and change the ? to @VariableName and upload to server, it appears that the 15.0 drivers do support named parameters.
1) Is there a specific reason BIDS prevents the named parameters from being used?
2) Has anyone seen this behavior change with Reporting Services and the upgraded Sybase drivers?
3) Does anyone have any advice on things I can try?
I realize that this may be a question better directed towards sybase, and I am currently working on having our DBAs open up a support case to see if they have any history of someone working with SSRS and Sybase 15.0 drivers.
Thank you!
Regards,
Dan

I recently updated the datatype of a sproc parameter from bit to tinyint. When I executed the sproc with the updated parameters the sproc appeared to succeed and returned "1 row(s) affected" in the console. However, the update triggered by the sproc did not actually work.
The table column was a bit which only allows 0 or 1 and the sproc was passing a value of 2 so the table was rejecting this value. However, the sproc did not return an error and appeared to return success. So is there a way to configure the database or sproc to return an error message when this type of error occurs?

SO I installed the MyOdbc drivers 5.0 and 3.51 and then went into my Data Sources(ODBC) drivers in my Administrative Control Panel
I then proceeded to add the DSN Under System DSN and I also tried User DSN
When I try to use the import/export tool in my SQL Server 2005 Management studio I don't get presented with the MySql drivers at all for a source
why is this?

What are the Latest ODBC and SQL Server Drivers for SQL 6.5? How can I upgrade them?
By the way, IS IT ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY to reboot the machine after application of a SQL Server service pack? (There is this dispute going on at my co.)

Hello,
When I go to import/export wizard, first I SOMETIMES get this error: DTS Import/Export Wizard Error: Co Create Instance: Specified Module could not be found.
That doesn't sound good and if someone knows what I should do about it, that'd be great, but then the imp/exp wizard does open and I have another problem:
My list of available ... drivers? the popup box where you choose to export from a text file, or excel, or whatever .. anyway that list is TOO short and has NOTHING that works in it. It has some things that look like they're in portuguese or something and a bunch of Merant options, none of which seem to work.
If I could JUST save out and import TEXT I'd be happy. Which means I also need, I think the OLE one for SQL Server. (for the export part).
Help.
PLEASE.
I don't know how to get more options to show up in that list.
Thanks so much!
TajMaya
