SELECT Statement To Display Combined Fields

Dear All
I am trying to populate an OledbDatareader for binding to a ASP datagrid.
For this I use select statement to display combined fields in a datagrid cell.
Eg. Select (Field1+ '<br/>' + Field2 + '<br/>' + Field 3) As Address .. and so on.
But the problem is if any of the three field is null the combined field 'Address' returns as Null.
Please help me to overcome this problem.

I am building a file repository page. For data source I use SQLDataSource and Repeater to display the categories. I am trying to achieve the result of displaying the following data: List of all "Main Categories" and all "Sub Categories" under each main category name. Also, "Total Number of files" and "Category Description" under each "Main Category".
Sample:
Human Resources
All documents related to new hire process.
New Hire Request forms, New Hire forms, Termination Forms
Total Files: 25
Programs & Utilities
Windows utilities and other tools to keep you safe on the net.
Antivirus, Spyware Removal Tools, Other programs
Total Files: 37
My SQL2005 DB has 2 tables.
1) FileCategories. Fields(CategoryID, ParentCategoryID, CategoryName, CategoryDescription)
2) Files. (CategoryID, ParentCAtegoryID, FileTitle)
My "Main Categories" are the ones that has a NULL in ParentCategoryID field. Because they are the Parents.
My each "Sub Category" has it's own ID as well as parentCategoryID. This insures that each Sub Category corresponding to it's parent only.
Sample:
Human Resources. CategoryID=4, ParentCategoryID=NULL
New Hire Request forms. CategoryID=13, Parent CategoryID=4
New Hire Forms. CategoryID=17, Parent CategoryID=4
Termination Forms. CategoryID=22, Parent CategoryID=4
Programs & Utilities. CategoryID=6, ParentCategoryID=NULL
Antivirus. CategoryID=8, Parent CategoryID=6
SpyWare Removal Tools. CategoryID=26, Parent CategoryID=6
Other Programs. CategoryID=31, Parent CategoryID=6
When I am creating a sql Select statement first I need to choose All "CategoryIDs" where "Parent category" is NULL. Then All "CategoryIDs" where "Parent categories" are not NULL and corresponding to Main Categories.
Is it something accomplishable with SQLdataSource or I have to use ObjectDataSource or something else.

I am trying to figure out a way to toggle the visibility of attribute data based on a parameter. Specifically, I have a report that has many columns that an end-user may not want to see, depending on what they are using the report for. I know you can toggle visibilities on individual columns easily enough, however I want the user to be able to select which fields (at the attribute level) they want visible on the report up in the parameters, via a multi-value prompt.
Is this possible with reporting services 2005?

I have built an Advanced Search page which allows users to select which columns to return (via checkbox) and to enter search criteria for any of the selected columns (into textboxes). I build the SQL statement from the properties of the controls. Works great.
My problem is getting my gridview control to play nicely. At first I used a SqlDataReader and bound the gridview to it, thus giving me the ability to run new SQL statements through it (with different columns each time). Worked nicely. But, per Microsoft, sorting can only be done if the gridview is bound to a datasource control like the SqlDataSource. So I wrote the code to handle sorting. No big deal; worked nicely. But I could not adjust the column widths programmatically unless bound to a datasource control like the SqlDataSource. And could not figure out a work around.
So, I decided to use the SqlDataSource. Works great. Except, I cannot figure out how to run a new SELECT statement through the SQLDataSource and have the gridview respond accordingly. If I try to return anything other than the exact same columns defined declaratively in the html, it pukes. But I need to be able to return a new selection of columns each time. For example, first time through the user selects columns 1,2,3,4 – the gridview should show those 4 columns. The second time the user selects columns 2,5,7 – the gridview should those 3 columns (and ONLY those 3 columns). Plus support selection and sorting.
I am desperate on this. I've burned 2.5 days researching and testing. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Select statement. In my database i am using the employee table. I need my first column to display your full name is 99 characters. so like if the employee is john smith it would display Your Full Name Is 9 characters (including the space).

The data I have has a 1 in for each Yes answer and a 2 for each no answer. I just want the select statement to show the word yes when there's a 1 and the word no when there's a 2. I don't need to update or change the database. Could anyone lead me in the right direction here? Thanks

I thought this was working, but apparently it was not. I was wondering how I would create a SELECT Statement for values that are blank (Equal to ""). I really could have swore that this was working, but I guess it wasn't.

I need t do some date converts on some varchar fields which
might have trailing spaces.
I tried this below but still

received a conversion error message
Server: Msg 242, Level 16, State 3, Line 4
The conversion of a char data type to a datetime data type resulted in an out-of-range datetime value.
Any ideas?

Is it possible to combine fields and text in a select statement?
In a dropDownList I want to show a combination of two different fields, and have the value of the selected item come from a third field. So, I thought I could maybe do something like this:
SELECT DISTINCT GRP AS GroupName, "Year: " + YEAR + "Grade: " + GRD AS ShowMe
FROM GE_Data
WHERE (DIST = @DIST)
I hoped that would take the values in YEAR and GRD and concatenate them with the other text. Then my dropDownList could show the ShowMe value and have the GroupName as the value it passes on. However, when I test this in the VS Query Builder, it says that Year and Grade are unknown column names and changes the double-quotes to square brackets.
If this is possible, or there's a better way to do it, I'd love some more info.

I've been busy all night searching and reading trying to figure out how I can do the following.
I have a table that tracks user IDs in multiple fields. When I select records from this table I need a way to resolve those ID fields back into user names by referencing the users table. SQL statement thus far...
SELECT A.Username as NameA, B.Username As NameB, FROM theTable, Users As A, Users As B WHERE theTable.UserIDA ???
How do I resolve theTable.UserIDA and theTable.UserIDB back to Users.Username so that the records returned fill the fields NameA and NameB?

I am doing a report which needs to display a field like
totals/percentages...
the actual data values is something like this
=(Sum(Fields!B.Value))& " / " &
(Sum(Fields!B.Value))/(sum(Fields!A.Value) + sum(Fields!B.Value)+sum(Fields!C.Value)+sum(Fields!D.Value)+sum(Fields!E.Value)+sum(Fields!F.Value))
*100
the problem is sum (fields!B.value) is an integer (sum of students) like 32
and the aggregate value in the denominator is a percentage value (0.014343443%)
I need to approximate the value to 0.014
something like this
totals/percentages... .......32/0,014 instead of 32 / 0.014343443 in the front end of the report properties

So should i specify each textbox that i want to have in page footer or is possible for me to just call the rectangle that its sitting on.

I have one table where i want to use aggregate function for duplicate rows and also be able to select all fields to display. How would i do that?
Here is my query:
select Z, count(*)as num from Table
group by Z
having count(Z) > 1 ----- this returns 213 rows
Select Z, A,B,C,D From Table
Group By Z, A,B,C,D
Having Count(Z)>1 ----This gives me nothing

I have a requirement to display the elapsed time between two datetime fields. What i have been able to do is datediff the dates and get the elapsed time in minutes and then i am trying to format it as HH:MM.
For example, an activity started on Nov 1 2007 08:00 and finished Nov 1 23:59, the elapsed time should be displayed as 15:59.
The other example is if the activity spans over a couple of days, it should be say 49:03.
I put the following code in the format of the textbox, but it only seems to work when the length of the minutes is greater than 1.

I have a report parameter named "Schools" which display a list of schools. For example, Alo elementary school, Balo middle school and Calo high school.
When "Alo elementary" is selected the report only display students from that school along with other assessments data fields. same goes for other schools too. But I want to display different data fields for "Calo high school" when it is selected. It is not currently possilbe becasue I am using the same template for all types of schools. There some fields only should be displayed for "Calo high school" but not for any other type of schools.
I can accomplish this by creating two separate report, one for "Calo high school" and the other for other schools. But I want to accomplish this just by creating one report. So when "Alo elementary school" is selected it displays report with certain fields and when "Calo high school" is selected then it displays same fields as "Alo elementary school" but as well as some other fields too in the report. Is this possible? Need help.

Hi, Im trying to pull data from 2 fields in the same table into a SqlDataSource that feeds into a GridView, and display them as 1 field in GridView? I have a database table that has entries of users and their friends. so
this tblFriendUser has a column called UserName and another column
called FriendUserName.
I am trying to get a list of friends for that particular user. Note
that if User1 initiated the friend request, he will be listed as
UserName and his friend as FriendUserName, but if his friend initiated
the friend request, it will be vice versa: him being the FriendUserName
and his friend the UserName. So I want the following 2 queries run and merged into
one query in order to return 2 columns only: UserFriendID & UserName, is that
possible? Is my design bad? Any suggestions/advice would help! Thanks a lot!

I have a page that is displaying different movie covers. They each have their respective genres stored in several keys (genre0, genre1, genre2). Now I can search within the movies by changing the url variable movies.aspx?genre=action but if I simply go to movies.aspx, I'm wanting all genres to appear. But for me, the page is blank if I don't specify the genre. So I've had to start filling in the genre All for all movies so I can go to movies.aspx?genre=all but I know this can't be necessary. Is it my SQL statement for the datasource causing the problem? I am currently having this problem with gridview and detailview. When I drag either onto the page and set my select statement to pick from one table and then update that data through the gridview (lets say), the update works perfectly. My problem is that the table I am pulling data from is mainly foreign keys. So in order to hide the number values of the foreign keys, I select the string value columns from the tables that contain the primary keys. I then use INNER JOIN in my SELECT so that I only get the data that pertains to the user I am looking to list and edit. I run the "test query" and everything I need shows up as I want it. I then go back to the gridview and change the fields which are foreign keys to templates. When I edit the templates I bind the field that contains the string value of the given foreign key to the template. This works great, because now the user will see string representation instead of the ID numbers that coinside with the string value. So I run my webpage and everything show up as I want it to, all the data is correct and I get no errors. I then click edit (as I have checked the "enable editing" box) and the gridview changes to edit mode. I make my changes and then select "update." When the page refreshes, and the gridview returns, the data is not updated and the original data is shown. I am sorry for so much typing, but I want to be as clear as possible with what I am doing. The only thing I can see being the issue is that when I setup my SELECT and FROM to contain fields from multiple tables, the UPDATE then does not work. When I remove all of my JOIN's and go back to foreign keys and one table the update works again. It is when I try to make the update from the gridview that the data is not changed. If anything is not clear please let me know and I will clarify as much as I can. This is my first project using ASP and working with databases so I am completely learning as I go. I took some database courses in college but I have never interacted with them with a web based front end. Ok I have a query "SELECT ColumnNames FROM tbl1" let's say the values returned are "age,sex,race".
Now I want to be able to create an "update" statement like "UPATE tbl2 SET Col2 = age + sex + race" dynamically and execute this UPDATE statement. So, if the next select statement returns "age, sex, race, gender" then the script should create "UPDATE tbl2 SET Col2 = age + sex + race + gender" and execute it.

Which works fine, but what I need to do is reference the "OrigPr" field and mark it as "valid" or "Invalid", the "OrigPr" the field contains alpha numeric data e.g. A000, A001, A002 - ZZ99 and so on, amongst all of the potential different types of codes we have codes that end in treble Zero (0) e.g. A000 which are valid, but if they end in double 00 e.g. AA00 then this is invalid, the problem I have is I can't just add

Is thistype of thing even possible? Or even efficent? Is it wise to subqueryfor totals (not like I have a choice based on the applicationrequirements)? help.

Hi guys,
I have the query below (running okay):

SELECT DISTINCT Field01 AS 'Field01', Field02 AS 'Field02'
FROM myTables
WHERE Conditions are true
ORDER BY Field01
The results are just as I need:
Field01 Field02
------------- ----------------------
192473 8461760
192474 22810
Because other reasons. I need to modify that query to:

INTO AuxiliaryTable
FROM myTables
WHERE Conditions are true
ORDER BY Field01
SELECT DISTINCT [Field02] FROM AuxTable
The the results are:

8461760
And what I need is (without showing any other field):
Field02
----------------------
8461760
22810
Is there any good suggestion?

The following is a simplified version of my SQL statement. I am attempting to do a simple count(*) with two groupings and a where clause. This is Select command for a GridView. However, I am unable to display zeros. The rows are completely missing and I would greatly appreciate someone's help. I have already tried Group By All, but that, unfortunately, does not work. Here is my SQL statement:
"SELECT [GENDER], [RACE], COUNT(*) FROM [TABLE] WHERE ([COLUMNNAME] ='SOMETHING') GROUP BY [GENDER], [RACE]"
