SELECT Only The Newest, But Based On Revised Letters

Feb 11, 2004

Ok here's a big one.

First I'm a big NEWBIE, so it'd be great if you can provide a little explanation as to how this should be done...

Here's what I want to do, but have no idea how to approach it.

I have a table with Quotes (table Quote) in them (for a Sale's Team). Each has a quote number (qtQN) and this number is sequencial but sometimes revised where a letter is added at the end. Like so:

qtQN__________Date
---------------------------
111q0001--------02/01/04
111q0002--------02/02/04
111q0002A------02/03/04
111q0002B -----02/04/04
222q0005--------01/15/04
etc... ------------- etc...

The first 3 digit are company codes and pretty unimportant to this problem. As you can see, 111q0002 has three versions. A, B, and no letter. The most up to date is B. So in this list I want to list only the most up to date quotes. So the resulting list would be:

111q0001
111q0002B
222q0005

Get it? Good, cuz I have no idea how to query that... any help at all is appreciated!

I'm using MS SQL Server 2k and scripting with ASP 3.0

Trying To Select Newest Row For Each Category...

Feb 6, 2004

Hi everyone -

I am building from the Time Tracker Start Kit, trying to get a better feel for how MS thinks we should do things.

In my editing, I have built a new Stored Procedure, trying to pull the newest entries for a specified person.

I have the following that will return all entries for a specific person, sorted by date, newest first:

SELECT
EntryLogID, TT_EntryLog.Description, Duration, EntryDate, TT_EntryLog.ProjectID AS ProjectID,
TT_EntryLog.CategoryID AS CategoryID, TT_Categories.Abbreviation AS CategoryName, TT_Projects.Name AS ProjectName,
ManagerUserID, TT_Categories.Abbreviation AS CatShortName
FROM
TT_EntryLog
INNER JOIN
TT_Categories
ON
TT_EntryLog.CategoryID = TT_Categories.CategoryID
INNER JOIN
TT_Projects
ON
TT_EntryLog.ProjectID = TT_Projects.ProjectID
WHERE
UserID = @UserID
ORDER BY
EntryDate Desc

This will return something like:

What I would like to accomplish is to return only the newest entry for each ProjectID (so in the above example, there would only be 2 entries, EntryID 14 and 6)

Any ideas?

Inner/Outer Join Help Revised

May 16, 2008

I need to compare our late sales orders to our late purchase orders. The query for the sales orders would be this:

SELECT S1.*,
S2.*,
S3.*
FROM somast S1
INNER JOIN soitem S2
ON S1.fsono = S2.fsono
INNER JOIN sorels S3
ON S2.fsono + S2.finumber = S3.fsono + S3.finumber

The PO table query is like this:

SELECT P1.*,
P2.*
FROM pomast P1
INNER JOIN poitem P2
ON P1.fpono = P2.fpono
WHERE NOT(P2.fmultirls = 'Y')
AND P2.frelsno = 0

somast is the sales order master table, soitem is the items table, and sorels is the release. pomast is the Purchase Order Master and poitem is the purchase order items table. I don't intend to leave the *'s and will clean up the query afterwards with the specific fields I need.

The poitem table as a field called fsokey which contains the sales order number if the PO and the SO are related.

So, here is my question. I want all the sales orders and only the purchase order information pulled for which the fsokey corresponds. Would I do this with a subquery or is there some very complex (for me) inner and outer join query that I would use.

I greatly appreciate some help with this.

Controlling SQL Access In .net - Revised

Apr 14, 2007

I have windows application (Basically a accounting system). I want to use either SQL authenticaion, or Windows authentication for my users of the application (Basically each db user will have their own account in Users for that db, so I can have sql control the access).

All access to the db is via stored procedures, but I want to have a set schema for each user type:

Supervisor
Manager
Data Entry
etc.

All with a predefined access to the proper stored procedures(So far fairly simple).

In addition to this I want to be able to set the specifics of that user in my .net application via a interface (so a user by default will have the pre-defined schema, when a supervisor opens this interface, they can add/remove access to other stored procedures)

Here's the issue. Is this the proper methodology to achieve this, because it's quite of bit of programming work. I don't want to do it then need to re-due everything.

Also should I use Windows Authentication, or SQL, or have a completly seperate table in the DB where I do manual authentication then have the .net application restrict the access?

Any help or comments on this approach will be helpful. Also ifanyone has found any articles or information similiar to what I am trying to accomplish, please point me in the correct direction.

Thanks.

Only Need One Record Per Newest Date.

Feb 7, 2008

Hey all,

I just discovered this cool forum. I am fairly new to T-SQL, so please bear with me.

Here is my problem. I am trying to return 1 record for each distinct MachineName, based on the most current CreateTime.

I have tried a bunch of different things, but the follwing query seems to get me close, except for all of the records, per MachineName, that aren't the newest CreateTime. Can anyone offer a suggestion I may be missing?

Here is my query:

SELECT
rcv.Name AS MachineName, r.CreateTime, rpv.Path + rpv.Name AS ResourcePool

FROM
dbo.Result_View AS r WITH (NOLOCK) INNER JOIN
dbo.ResourceConfiguration_View AS rcv WITH (NOLOCK) ON r.ResourceConfigurationId = rcv.Id INNER JOIN
dbo.Resource_View AS rv WITH (NOLOCK) ON rcv.ResourceId = rv.Id INNER JOIN
dbo.ResourcePool_View AS rpv WITH (NOLOCK) ON rv.ResourcePoolId = rpv.Id

WHERE
(rpv.Name NOT LIKE 'Archive')
AND
(r.CreateTime > '2/1/2008')
AND
(r.CreateTime = (SELECT TOP (1) r.CreateTime FROM dbo.Result_View))

ORDER BY MachineName

I have added the '2/1/2008' filter, so as not to hammer the DB too hard. It goes back for some time.

Thanks in advance,

Allen

Select Based On Nonexistant Value

Jan 21, 2004

Hey all, I'm having an interesting problem, but also keep in mind I am certainly a newbie with DB's and SQL but here's what I got:

I'm making an application that creates quotes for our customers. I want to create a Quote Number that is based on the largest of the last number in the DB but only based on that company. For example:

CoID QuoteNum
123 1
123 2
666 1
123 3
666 2
666 3

so if I created a new quote for CoID: 666, the QuoteNum would be 4. Easy enough. But the problem arises when I create a new quote for a NEW COMPANY, one who's CoID is not already present in the DB. So what I have so far is this:

SELECT QuoteNum FROM Quote
WHERE QuoteNum = (SELECT MAX(QuoteNum) FROM Quote
WHERE CoID='222')

but since 222 does not yet exist I get an error: "Either BOF or EOF is True, or the current record has been deleted. Requested operation requires a current record."

So how do I tell the DB to ignore that error and perform another task should it arise? Any help would greatly be appreciated. THANKS!

WHERE Includes All Letters

Apr 18, 2006

Hi

I would like to perform a procedure
which takes a string of numbers and searches for strings in a table which include all the
given numbers in any particular order. problem is i can only return strings
which include 'any' of the letters in the search string and not
'all'.

this is how i perform it so far:

@IncludeNumbers
VARCHAR(50)

AS
BEGIN

SELECT Phone AS [Telephone
Number]

FROM tbl_Person AS p

WHERE (p.Phone LIKE '%[' +
@IncludeNumbers + ']%')

END

(ive removed some unecessary bits but
this shows the basics)

As you can see currently it will return any phone numbers which contain any numbers given in the includeNumbers string, I would only like it to return phone numbers which contain all the numbers given in the includeNumbers string. is there any way to make it search for strings
which include 'all' numbers given?

thanks

Updating Based On A Select Iteration

Jan 8, 2001

Okay I'm going nuts.

I have a table with a max key value in it, and another table with a few rows in it. I'm trying to update the two new rows with key values that are iterative from the MAX value in the first table. Could anyone point me to some good LOOP...UPDATE, etc resources or pointers before I go postal?

::grins::

Example: first table has a key field, last value in it is say 1000. The second table has two records. They need keys too, and those keys need to start at the last value in the first table + 1, so 1001, and end on the last row of the second table, or, say 1002. I cannot figure out how to read the last value of the first table, and create an update loop to iteratively update the key value in the second table based on the max value of the first, and looping based on the number of records in the second, in this case 2.

Arrrg!

Select Record Based On Max Date

Sep 12, 2012

I have the following table:

Occ_Num Feature_Num Trans_Date Peril_Desc
123 1 1-2-2012 Water
123 1 1-11-2012 Ice
123 2 1-2-2012 Other
123 2 1-13-2012 Other
123 2 1-19-2012 Wind

I want to select each Occ_Num, Feature_NUM, Trans_Date, and PERIL_Desc but with only the Peril that was part of the max trans_date.

So i would want the following from above:

Occ_Num Feature_Num Trans_Date Peril_Desc
123 1 1-11-2012 Ice
123 2 1-19-2012 Wind

I'm having trouble with the syntax need to accomplish this.

How To Create Set Of Records Based On SELECT

Oct 10, 2014

I have a set of records that will always be the same. A template if you wanna call it that.

"SELECT ID, Field1, Field2, Field3, Field4, Field5, Field6, Field7 FROM TABLE WHERE Field2 = 000"

This returns a 20 record set. The user will click a button and create another set of 20 records, where they can make changes accordingly.
