I'm sure this is an obvious question but much of SQL is new to me.I have a stored procedure and I want to use the results of a selectstatement elsewhere in the stored prcedure. Can anyone tell me how to access the results from a select statement within the stored procedure?
This is to implement auditting functionality, before updating a record i want select the original record and compare the contents of each field with the varibles that are passed in, if the fields contents has changed i want to write an audit entry.
So i'd like to store the results of the select statement in a variable and access it like a dataset. e.g

I ran my SP in QA and it brought back some data from my live database but I had my test DB selected from the DDL at the top of the screen. So i ran a Select statement on the whole table in a different query window (with the same parameters)and it gave me the correct info. Any idea y? They both should be bringing back information from the same table not one from my live DB and one from my TEST DB. I have a script with a number of different Left Joins. When I run it in Query Analyzer the Left Join works as a normal join and suppresses some rows. However when the same code is used in a stored procedure the correct results are produced when the stored procedure is executed.
Can anyone tell me what is causing this?

I have an sql query that runs fairly well and I'd like to make it a stored procedure.
The only hickup here is that I need to be able to send a field name in the select statement as a variable.
SQL Server does not allow this and I'm at a loss for the best way to handle it.

I have a stored procedure on a SQL Server 2008 database. The stored procedure is very simple, just a SELECT statement. When I run it, it returns 422 rows. However, when I run the SELECT statement from the stored procedure, it returns 467 rows. I've tried this by running both the stored procedure and the SELECT statement in the same SSMS window at the same time, and the behavior is the same. The stored procedure is:

Is it possible to have an entire sql select statement as the input variable to a stored procedure? I want the stored procedure to execute the select statement.
ie.

It may sound weird, but I have my reason for wanting to do it this way. Is this possible? if so, how do I implement this inside the stored procedure?

I have concatenated a long Select Statement and assigned it to a variable. (i.e.)
@a = Select * from foo ---Obviously mine is much more robust

I am attempting to sort the results of a query executed against a table variable in descending order. The data is being inserted into the table variable as expected, however when I attempt to order the results in descending order, the results are incorrect. I'm new to SSIS, but have been programming in SQL and ASP.Net for several years. In Visual Studio 2005 Team Edition I've created an SSIS that imports data from a flat file into the database. The original process worked, but did not check the creation date of the import file. I've been asked to add logic that will check that date and verify that it's more recent than a value stored in the database before the import process executes.
Here are the task steps.
[Execute SQL Task] - Run a stored procedure that checks to see if the import is running. If so, stop execution. Otherwise, proceed to the next step.
[Execute SQL Task] - Log an entry to a table indicating that the import has started.
[Script Task] - Get the create date for the current flat file via the reference provided in the file connection manager. Assign that date to a global value (FileCreateDate) and pass it to the next step. This works.
[Execute SQL Task] - Compare this file date with the last file create date in the database. This is where the process breaks. This step depends on 2 variables defined at a global level. The first is FileCreateDate, which gets set in step 3. The second is a global variable named IsNewFile. That variable needs to be set in this step based on what the stored procedure this step calls finds out on the database. Precedence constraints direct behavior to the next proper node according to the TRUE/FALSE setting of IsNewFile.
If IsNewFile is FALSE, direct the process to a step that enters a log entry to a table and conclude execution of the SSIS.
If IsNewFile is TRUE, proceed with the import. There are 5 other subsequent steps that follow this decision, but since those work they are not relevant to this post.
Here is the stored procedure that Step 4 is calling. You can see that I experimented with using and not using the OUTPUT option. I really don't care if it returns the value as an OUTPUT or as a field in a recordset. All I care about is getting that value back from the stored procedure so this node in the decision tree can point the flow in the correct direction.

Setting the properties in the "Execute SQL Task Editor" has been the difficult part of this. Here are the settings.

I tried several SQL statements, suspecting it's a syntax issue. All of these failed, but with different error messages. These are the 2 most recent attempts based on posts I was able to locate.

Error: 0xC002F210 at Compare Last File Create Date, Execute SQL Task: Executing the query "exec ? = dbo.p_CheckImportFileCreateDate 'GL Account Import', ?, ? output" failed with the following error: "No value given for one or more required parameters.". Possible failure reasons: Problems with the query, "ResultSet" property not set correctly, parameters not set correctly, or connection not established correctly.
Task failed: Compare Last File Create Date
Warning: 0x80019002 at GLImport: SSIS Warning Code DTS_W_MAXIMUMERRORCOUNTREACHED. The Execution method succeeded, but the number of errors raised (1) reached the maximum allowed (1); resulting in failure. This occurs when the number of errors reaches the number specified in MaximumErrorCount. Change the MaximumErrorCount or fix the errors.
SSIS package "MyPackage.dtsx" finished: Failure.
When the above is run tbl_ImportFileCreateDate does not get updated, so it's failing at some point when calling the procedure.

The IsNewFile global variable is scoped at the package level and has a Boolean data type, and the Output parameter in the stored procedure is defined as a Bit. So what gives?
The "Possible Failure Reasons" message is so generic that it's been useless to me. And I've been unable to find any examples online that explain how to do what I'm attempting. This would seem to be a very common task. My suspicion is that one or more of the settings in that Execute SQL Task node is bad. Or that there is some cryptic, undocumented reason that this is failing.

Error #1: Type 'SqlConnection' is not defined (in Form1.vb)
Error #2: Type 'SqlDataAdapter' is not defined (in Form1.vb)
Error #3: Array bounds cannot appear in type specifiers (in Form1.vb)
Error #4: 'DataSet' is not a type and cannot be used as an expression (in Form1)
Please help and advise.

I have the "ssmsExpressDB" database in the Database Expolorer of VB 2005 Express. But I do not know how to get the SqlConnection and the SqlDataAdapter into the Form1. I do not know how to get the Fill Method implemented properly.
I try to learn "Working with SELECT Statement in a Stored Procedure" for printing the 6 rows that are selected - they are not parameterized.
Seems like I'm stealing all the threads here, : But I need to learn :) I have a StoredProcedure that needs to return values that other StoredProcedures return.Rather than have my DataAccess layer access the DB multiple times, I would like to call One stored Procedure, and have that stored procedure call the others to get the information I need. I think this way would be more efficient than accessing the DB multiple times. I need to keep track of the number of hits on a particular page. Im using a stored Procedure
What I want to do is get the number of hits and increment it by one :)
ie: Sub Procedure should be like below
SELECT noOfHits WHERE pageName = 'bla bla'
noOfHits = noOfHits + 1 etc.
Also, some of the pages will be added and deleted all the time, so before I increment the noOfHits variable I need to check that the pageName 'bla bla' exists. AND if it doesnt I need to create a pageName called 'bla bla'
What I need to do in essence is:
1. Check that a particular row exists. if it doesnt create it.
2. Increment a value (by one) to a column in this particular row.
Phew. Hope you got that. Any ideas much appreciated,

I have a table name stored in a scalar variable (input parameter of my stored procedure). I need to run SQL statement: SELECT COUNT (*) FROM MyTable and store the result of my query in a scalar variable:
For example:
declare @countRows int
set @countRows = (select count(*) from MyTable)
The problem is that the name of MyTable is stored in the input variable of my stored procedure and of corse this does not work:
declare @countRows int
set @countRows = (select count(*) from @myTableName)
I also tried this:
declare @sqlQuery varchar(100)
set @sqlQuery = 'select count(*) from ' + @myTableName
set @countRows = exec(@sqlQuery)
But it looks like function exec() does not return any value...
Any idea how to solve this problem?

In my SPs, I commonly have a situation, where a SELECT statement gets a single scalar value (e.g. SELECT Name FROM Employee WHERE id=@id) from a table.
Because the result is still a relation, I cannot process it directly or assign the result to a variable
(like set @name = SELECT Name FROM Employee WHERE id=@id)
So, how can I process the results of the statement in this case.
In some other cases, the result is actually a relation. And I want to iterate over all rows, processing each row's columns.
(I know this smells of ADO.NET, but how can I help it if I am coming from that background)...
The point is I want to do all this in T-Sql on server side!!!

I am having trouble getting data back from my stored procedure insert commands. Here is what I currently have set up.

2 - A Table adapter called tadUsers

Is there a way I can display the data returned from more than one stored procedure in a report using reporting services. Or can I use more than one dataset in the report????

1) How do I write a stored procedure in MS SQL so that it returns a results set?
2) How do I get this into ASP.NET so that I can put the values into controls?

I wrote a stored procedure with three variables to be passed as input parameters. The stored procedure runs a select into statement into a temp table. The resulting temp table with another table was queried using right outer join to produce the desired results.
The stored procedure compiles error free.However when I ran the stored procedure with the parameters(3) in ISQL/W (SQL Server 6.5) the headers(column-names) were displayed but no records.
When runned as a query with the same parameter values, records were produced.
Help please urgent.

I'm testing some code to look up values from my database and update a specific field when certain conditions are met. I'm having trouble with some code that is giving me the results I expect when I submit one set of parameters, but is not finding anything in the database for another set, when I know the data exists.
