SKUUPGRADE Of Reporting Services Fails With Could Not Write Rssrvpolicy.config
Aug 10, 2007
Hi,
I'm using the System Center Essential 2007 VHD (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=91061). It has an SQL Server Express Edition with Advanced Services installed as a named instance, SCEVHDSCE. I tried to upgrade the SQL Server to Enterprise Edition, because some of the reports are not working in Express. I started the setup with the SKUUPGRADE=1 switch, it found the SQL Engine and Reporting Services components and offered to upgrade them. Upgrading the SQL Engine was successful, however the Reporting Services failed with the following error:
SQL Server Setup did not have the administrator permissions required to copy a file: C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.4Reporting ServicesReportServer
ssrvpolicy.config. To continue, verify that the file exists, and either grant administrator permissions to the account currently running Setup or log in with an administrator account. Then run SQL Server Setup again.
I checked the file, it exists and the current account (which is a domain administrator) has permissions. I stopped all services which could use the reporting services, rerun the setup now only for reporting services, but the same error occured. For the third try I started Filemon also, and it captured the following trace.
http://mit.bme.hu/~micskeiz/files/sql-rs-install-error.jpg
From this I guess the following: until row 442 it checks the existense of the target folder and creates the folder for the upgraded instance in C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.4. In step 443 probably it wants to copy the old config, but it searches them in the C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.2 folder, which should be the location of a default reporting services install. However, the setup of System Center Essentials installs its SQL Server Express Reporting Services in C:Program FilesSystem Center Essentials 2007Microsoft SQL ServerMSSQL.2, thus the setup fails because it is looking for rssrvpolicy.config in the wrong folder.
Do I see the problem correctly?
The setup log can be found here: http://mit.bme.hu/~micskeiz/files/SQLSetup0005_SCEVHD_RS.log
I tried to do a command line install, but I did not found a switch to tell the old location of Reporting Services. Neverthless I tried the following command:
D:>start /wait setup.exe ADDLOCAL=RS_Server INSTANCENAME=SCEVHDSCE UPGRADE=RS_
Server SKUUPGRADE=1 /qb
But the setup said that the requested component could not be found.
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Zoltan

Currently have a single hard coded file path to the SSRS config file which parses the file and provides the reporting services web service url. Â My question is how would i run this same query against 100s of servers that may or may not share the same file path as the one hard coded ?
Is there a way to query the registry to find the location of the config file of any server ? which could be on D, E, F, H, etc.Â
I know I can string together the address followed by "reports" and named instance if needed, but some instances may not have used the default virtual directory name (Reports).
Am I going about this the hard way ? Is there a location where the web service url exists in a table ? I could not locate anything in the Reporting service database. Basically need to inventory all of my reporting services url's.
Hi, I have just install SQL 2005 SP2 and trying to get Window SharePoint Services V3 integrated with SQL 2005 SP2 reporting services. In SharePoint Central Administration, I select the Reporting Services Integration page and have setup the Report Server Web Service URL and Authentication Mode. I then goto Grant database access, specify the SQL server name, get promted for a username and password that has access SQL Reportserver and get the following error "The group name could not be found" Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks
in order to use an SSIS package as a data source in a report, I need to enable the SSIS extension in the RSReprotDesigner.config and RSReportServer.config files. That extension is in neither of these files. I have SSIS running on my machine with Reporting Services.
The path to RSReportServer.config: C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSRS10_50.MSSQLSERVERReporting ServicesReportServer
The path to RSReportDesigner.config: C:Program Files (x86)Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0Common7IDEPrivateAssemblies
Why is this extension not in either of these files?
The following is an abbreviated list of what's present in the RSReportServer.config file:

I'm running SQL Server 2008 R2
ProductVersion  ProductLevel  Edition 10.50.1600.1 RTM   Enterprise Edition (64-bit)
The operating system is Windows 7 Professional 64 bit.
We've just rolled out Reporting services at our organisation, and the users love it. However, it's giving me a headache because, as the only developer in the company and as I have VS.NET, I'm the only one who can author the reports.
Does anyone know of a third party provider that has written a report writing tool with a straight forward UI ( a bit like the access report writer for example) that I can deploy to some users and let them run riot? It's the kind of thing that I expect someone will have done as a pet project, if anyone knows of a freeware version that would be even better.
1) SSRS export to Excel functionallity has an important limitation... is terribly slow when exporting huge amount of data to Excel. 2) Subreport are not supported to export in excel. This is some known issue and limitations of SSRS.
I have got question because time is running but I still don't know how to do it.
So I have 1 group with 3 rows and I would like to put for each row not only group individual number like 1,2,3,4,5 ... etc until end of report. Â Generally using fuction RowNumber I got 1,2,3 and then 1,2,3 again. Â
I was trying to write a custom legend text for a chart that I have in SSRS. In the chart I have a Bar chart and a Line chart. I have two values coming from a dataset. One is a running value. All the series values are from year dataset.
I need to get a custom legend text for the three data series looking like this. "2013- Mth", "2014-Mth". Year should be dynamic and coming from the dataset.
I tried writing an expression in the series legend option as shown below.
But I don't get the required text for the chart. I only get the default series text for the legend. If I only write a text without the dynamic year taken from the dataset columns I get the custom text. But not when I concatenate the dynamic year series with the static text. Any property to enable/disable?
I have installed SP2 successfully a number of times before, but always where the Report Server and the Report Server databases were on the same box. This is the first time trying to install the Service Pack where the Report Server is on server X and the databases are on server Y.
When I try to run the SP (on server X), I get the following message:
Login failed for user '(null)'. Reason: Not associated with a trusted SQL Server connection.
I am logged in using a domain account that is a local admin on both servers (and also the SQL Server startup account on server Y). It is also the account used by the Report Server to connect to the RS databases. The startup account for the Report Server service is 'NT AUTHORITYNETWORK SERVICE'.
Hi, This may be a trivial question but neither SQL Server 2000 Reporting Services SP1 or SP2 wil install against our SQL Server 2005 Developer edition installation.
Our Version: Microsoft SQL Server Reporting Services Version 9.00.3027.00
Does anyone know whether the Services Packs are for SQL Server 2000 only? if so, whether the new functionality in SP2 will be made available to SQL Server 2005?
I have a particular report that fails to run. In the browser, the following is shown when the report is run:The attempt to connect to the report server failed. Check your connection information and that the report server is a compatible version. There is an error in XML document (1, 84459).'', hexa decimal value 0x01, is an invalid character. Line 1, position 84459.
When I look into the SSRS logs, I find the following:

There are no other system logs at the corresponding time of this failure.Other reports that use the same data source run fine. This problem is confined to a few reports within a larger report set. The reports are provided by a third-party so I don't have a lot of insight to what the report is actually doing. This is running on SSRS 2008 R2.
Hi all, i am tring to install and configure reporting services in Windows 2003 SP2- 64 bit machine as part of installing SCE 2007, and i followed the procedure for confiurng all the options in reportingservices config tool,
all the options show green flag and still could not proceed further as the following error is coming
"The Selected Sql server reportin service instance is not configured , please configure to continue" which halts the further process,
I have installed SQL Server 2005 edition and installed Sql server 2005 SP2 also,

What I am trying to accomplish is the ability for users to select which time zone they want the data in the report to display in. To do this, I created a timezone parameter that has the offset from Central Time (which is how all data is stored in our database).
I've been reading a lot of posts on this subject. I understand that the issue is due to the fact that the subreport is only rendered once. So after the main report is sorted on another column, the cell with the subreport produces an error.
What I want to know is whether or not this is considered a defect. And if it is a defect, is it fixed in another version?

When the dialog box appeared indicating file couldn't found, there was no option to look elsewhere for it the only option was retry or cancel which after 5 or 6 retries I cancelled. Everything else appears to have installed correctly for this instance.
Also earlier attempts to install have left services for named instances that I cannot install to such as SQLEXPRESS , SQLEXPRESS1 and CURRIEREXPRESS, I long ago had a beta version installed and have attempted numerous methods to completely wipe these out using the uninstallbetas tool from Microsoft as well as a number of suggestions from some posts.
Please help - The most significant reason I'm installing this is to practice creating SQL Reporting Service reports
Is there any way to get more information for when IAuthorizationExtension::CheckAccess fails to grant access to a report item for the current user? Specifically, it would be useful to know:
1. URL of attempted report 2. IP address of user agent 3. Identity of current user 4. Date/Time of the failed attempt

i am using Sqlexpress instance and want to upgrade it to standrad edition so i did the installation and installer told me that use this SKUUPGRADE=1
in command prompt to upgrade the sqlexpress instance but whenever i am running the command its giving me an message that "Please go to control panel for installing the components"
what i am doing wrong, i have tried using every command but it always gives me this message
And several others. Nothing will actually work. Sometimes it complains that the option selected aren't valis for the version of SQL Server that I have installed. (SQL_Engine isn't a valid option?) I even tried listing every component (except, analysis services and notification services) in the ADDLOCAL option...
If it doesn't complain that the options are invalid, then shows me an install box with Client Components and Documentation options all with red X's. Doesn't show me the main components.
I am trying to migrate my reports from SQL server 2000 reporting services 32bit to 2005 64bit. I am following the migration steps that MS specified. Restored my Reportserver and ReportserverTempDB databases Then I was using the configure Report services to upgrade these databases but I always end up getting the follwoing exception when I run the upgrade on the "Database Setup" configuration for 'ReportServerTempDB' database System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Could not locate entry in sysdatabases for database 'ReportServerTempDBTempDB'. No entry found with that name. Make sure that the name is entered correctly. at System.Data.SqlClient.SqlConnection.OnError(SqlException exception, Boolean breakConnection) at System.Data.SqlClient.SqlInternalConnection.OnError(SqlException exception, Boolean breakConnection) at System.Data.SqlClient.TdsParser.ThrowExceptionAndWarning(TdsParserStateObject stateObj) at System.Data.SqlClient.TdsParser.Run(RunBehavior runBehavior, SqlCommand cmdHandler, SqlDataReader dataStream, BulkCopySimpleResultSet bulkCopyHandler, TdsParserStateObject stateObj) at System.Data.SqlClient.SqlCommand.RunExecuteNonQueryTds(String methodName, Boolean async) at System.Data.SqlClient.SqlCommand.InternalExecuteNonQuery(DbAsyncResult result, String methodName, Boolean sendToPipe) at System.Data.SqlClient.SqlCommand.ExecuteNonQuery() at Microsoft.ReportingServices.Common.DBUtils.ApplyScript(String connectionString, String script) at ReportServicesConfigUI.SqlClientTools.SqlTools.ApplyScript(String connectionString, String script)
It's driving me crazy, why is it looking for 'ReportServerTempDBTempDB' in the catalog instead of 'ReportServerTempDB'? Is it possible to migrate from 32bit to 64bit?
I am trying to upgrade from SQL 2005 Standard to Enterprise in our Production environment. I am testing this currently on a VM to document and script the steps necessary what we would need to do during a maintenance window when I can have this server offline.
I am getting the following error: 'SQL Server Setup has encountered the following problem: [Microsoft][SQL Native Client][SQL Server] The certificate cannot be dropped because one or more entities are either signed or encrypted using it.. To continue, correct the problem, and the run SQL Server Setup again.'
How can I find the entries, or remove them. We do not typically do this, and I explicitly didn't do this on the test server. I have tried this with 2 different VM builds and I'm getting the same error.
When going in to Control Panel, AddRemove Programs, SQL 2005 x64, Change, I can rerun the Suspended setup and it errors with the same Problem.
How can I get around this short of uninstalling and reinstalling the product? Is there another part of the SKUupgrade switch I need to append? I'm saving this as a batch file and running it from the command line.
Here is my command line entry:
Net use Z: /delete Net use Z: "\<Fileserver>SoftwareMicrosoftSQL2005Enterprise Edition x64" start /wait Z:serverssetup.exe ADDLOCAL=SQL_Engine INSTANCENAME=MSSQLSERVER UPGRADE=SQL_Engine SKUUPGRADE=1 /qb

After developing SSIS Package (.dtsx file) if I need to deploy to all environments dynamically, then how can I create .dts config file and mention properties in it ?Â
Hello, I have a problem when trying to fully process an SSAS database using Integration Services "Analysis Services Processing Task" task. I have 2 of these tasks which are responsible for processing the Dimensions then the Cubes. When I run the package either via the BIDS environment or on the local server from the Integration Services engine, I will get an error after about 20 minutes stating:
"Error: Memory Error: Allocation failure. Not enough storage is available to process this command""Error: Errors in the metadata manager. An error occurred when loading the <cube name> cube from the file \?D:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.2OLAPDataMyWarehouse<cube file>.xml"
The cube name is not specific, it will fail and any of my cubes could be in the error log
If I fully process the AS database using the AS engine (logon to local AS server, right-click AS database and click Process), I get no errors at all, it processes and completes fine. The processing options are identical when I run in AS or via the SSIS "Analysis Services Processing Task" task.
I've searched quite a lot online but no joy, the information I have gleaned from various sites does not directly link SSIS with SSAS processing problems.
When either the AS processing starts via SSAS or SSIS the memory usage of MSMDSRV.exe increases to around 1.4 / 1.5 GB but never goes to 2GB ever, even when the error appears.
I've done the following with no effect.
" Have run via AS and works fine " No specific cube it fails on " Have created a Dimension only package, same problem " Changed the maxmemorylimit " Changed the connections to localhost " Memory DOES NOT max out on server

I'm attempting to obtain a cost effective solution for my existing customers to develop reports on their SQL 2000 Server installations using their Reporting Services 2000. With products like Visual Basic.NET 2003 becoming almost impossible to obtain, I have at least one customer who is running into a dead end.
One option possibly is the SQL Express with Advanced Services download, which has Reporting Services. My questions are as follows:
Can the report designer component of SQL Express Reporting Services be configured to connect to an external database (which would happen to be a SQL 2000 database) to establish its datasets? Does the resultant designed report end up in an RDL file? If the customer published this report via the Reporting Services 2000 Report Manager, would the report be able to run?
Sorry for asking a question like this that I could probably answer on my own, but my customer needed this answer yesterday. I have scoured the web and microsoft sites - and posted a question on the official SQL Reporting Services cateogy ... in an attempt to answer the basic question of how to design reports for Reporting Services 2000 in the absence of Visual Basic.NET 2003 (or other .NET 2003 tools) with no success.
We have a sharepoint <\cescesgypdav> that is a WebDAV connection, not an actual fileshare. A SSRS Subscription fails on file write ... "Failure writing file <name here > : The network path was not found" ... to this path.
I am applying hourly differential backup to the backup server from production with the following command. This command makes the database on standby server into read only mode.
RESTORE DATABASE ARSYSTEM FROM DISK = 'E:SQL backup from productionsql_full_backup' WITH MOVE 'arsystem' TO 'd:ardataarsystem.mdf' , MOVE 'arsystem_log' TO 'D:ARLOGARsystem' , STANDBY = 'E:SQL backup from productionSQL daily diff back up'
Now I want to run a command which will put the database in write mode. I have created a job which would make the datbase Write mode. This job runs successfully sometimes and fails sometimes. I need to ensure that the job always succeeds. When it fails, how do I troubleshoot and what is the possible fix?
Thanks in advance.
The error message is
Cannot apply the backup on device 'E:SQL backup from productionSQL daily diff back up' to database 'ARSYSTEM'. [SQLSTATE 42000] (Error 3136) RESTORE DATABASE is terminating abnormally. [SQLSTATE 42000] (Error 3013). The step failed.

I work in a big project and we will begin in using reporting services as the base technique for reports and I will be responsible for this part. but I have a problem I will discuss in the following:
Currently: We use currently devexpress reports and we have 2 languages(Arabic and English). the data in tables saved in two ways (Arabic and English). when the end user change the language of the web site the report data language changed when run it.
Example:
we have table with (ID, NAME_AR, NAME_EN, JobTitle_AR, JobTitle_EN). designed report will display(ID, NAME_EN, JobTitle_EN) . but the end user change the language of the system the report will
