SP Skips Execution Of Child SP When Called From C#

Sep 14, 2005

Hello all. I have a stored procedure that seems to skip the execution of an entire line of code (which happens to be a call to execute another stored procedure), but ONLY if it is being used from C# (using the System.Data.SqlClient namespace... object: SqlCommand, etc).

Basic structure:

Event SP: top-most parent
-->Calls UpdateXs SP: This is the SP that will not call his child SP
----->Calls UpdateX: This is the SP that is being ignored when called from .NET (In a loop, each iteration, max iterations 10).

(1) I can call the top-most stored procedure (Event SP) with the same arguments in Query Analyzer and all SP's will execute.
(2) I can call UpdateXs SP with the same arguments that are being passed to it from Event SP in the Query Analyzer, and again, it's child sp executes (UpdateX).
(3) I can also call the last child (UpdateX) directly in Query Analyzer with the same arguments that are passed in production (from executing the top-most parent in C#), and it executes correctly.

I'm positive that at no point the last child (UpdateX) is being passed NULL values. I made debug tables and before execution of an SP from within another SP, I store all the arguments in a debug table--none are null. Also, to figure out what was wrong with the last child (UpdateX) , the first statement in inserts into another debug table, just to show that that execution has made it into the sp--when the top parent is called from C#, it doesn't insert into my table (doesn't execute).

There are statements inside Event SP that execute after the sp call to UpdateXs SP. These statement always execute. Also, there are statements inside UpdateXs SP that execute after the sp call to the last child. These statement always execute too.

I am now clueless. I had developed & debugged all sp's in Query Analyzer before trying to use it live (with the C#). It's always fine in Query Analyzer, but ALWAYS skips the last sp in production.

Is there some fundamental principle I am missing here in MS SQL stored procedures? I am only 3 levels deep in SP calls, so I didn't think that would be an issue (I have made SP's that went a LOT deeper in calls than that in the past with no issues).

Any insight much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

SSIS Called From Agent Job Not Calling New Child SSIS Package Addition

Oct 29, 2007

I have an SSIS package (TransAgentMaster) that I recently modified to include a call to a child package via the file system. The child package creates a text file. When I run the package in dev studio then the child package/text file is produced.

I then imported the TransAgentMaster as a stored packagesfilesystem package into SQL SSIS and executed the package. The child package produced the text file.

I then ran the SQL Server Agent to see if the child package would work and it did not generate the text file. Thus after updating a SSIS package importing the package into SSIS the job that calls the package will not call the child package. Please not that the TransAgentMaster package calls 7 children packages €¦ just not my new one.

Any thoughts why the agent will not run the child newly crated childe package?

Breakpoint In Child-package Triggered On First Execution Only.

Sep 23, 2007

I have a child package which is executed several times within the same SSIS ETL. I have placed a break point on one of the child package's tasks, set to trigger on a PreExecute() event. The first time the child package is invoked, the breakpoint is triggered. However, on each successive invocation the breakpoint is ignored. Does anybody know if this behaviour is normal? Thanks in advance!

Parent - Multiple Child Package Execution

Aug 24, 2007

I have a parent package "A", I also have 4 child packages "B","B1","B2",B3"
In BIDS, I created a file connection in the package "A" to connect to the child packages. So whenever I want to run B1 or B2, I change the path in the file connection to point to B1 or B2 and so on. Since the developement environment is File system this works perfectly fine.

But in the Test / Production environment all packages are stored in the Sql server. How can I paramaterize the child package connection so that I can use configuration / variables to select which child package to execute.

Thanks

Execution Of Child Package From Parent Package In Sql Server 2005 Integration Services

May 21, 2007

Hi,

I created a package which passes some infornmations( through parameters) to its child package.

I need to do some processing in parent package based on execution status of child package.i.e.

if child fails then some operation and if child succeeds then other operation.

To determine the status of execution of child package I am using two differnt constraint ..one constraint is having value "Success" and other having value "Failure".

My problem is that when child packge is executed successfully the constraint with value = "Success" works properly but when child fails the constraint with value "Failure" does not work.

Upsizing Wizard Skips Tables

Sep 1, 2006

I am in the process of porting all of my Access 2003 databases to SQL Server. I started with my smallest database, which has only two tables. I have run the wizard five times, with different settings, but every time it only imports the table structure without the data.

Can anyone tell me what I'm missing here? Also, I have created several databases which I can't use, named InstructorsSQL, InstructorsSQL1, InstructorsSQL2, etc. I deleted the database files, but the names are apparently still in the system, since SQL Server won't allow me to use the same name again. How can I get rid of these old names.

Thanks,

Mike

Trying To Return A Single Record For Each Client From Child Table Based Upon A Field Of Date Type In Child Table

Nov 1, 2007

I have table "Clients" who have associated records in table "Mailings"
I want to populate a gridview using a single query that grabs all the info I need so that I may utilize the gridview's built in sorting.
I'm trying to return records containing the next upcoming mailing for each client.

The closest I can get is below:
I'm using GROUP BY because it allows me to return a single record for each client and the MIN part allows me to return the associated record in the mailings table for each client that contains the next upcoming 'send_date'

SELECT MIN(dbo.tbl_clients.client_last_name) AS exp_last_name, MIN(dbo.tbl_mailings.send_date) AS exp_send_date, MIN(dbo.tbl_mailings.user_id) AS exp_user_id, dbo.tbl_clients.client_id, MIN(dbo.tbl_mailings.mailing_id) AS exp_mailing_idFROM dbo.tbl_clients INNER JOIN
dbo.tbl_mailings ON dbo.tbl_clients.client_id = dbo.tbl_mailings.client_idWHERE (dbo.tbl_mailings.user_id = 1000)GROUP BY dbo.tbl_clients.client_id
The user_id set at 1000 part is what makes it rightly pull in all clients for a particular user. Problem is, by using the GROUP BY statement I'm just getting the lowest 'mailing_id' number and NOT the actual entry associated with mailing item I want to return.  Same goes for the last_name field.   Perhaps I need to have a subquery within my WHERE clause?Or am I barking up the wrong tree entirely..

Static Variables In A SQLCLR Stored Proc Seem To Get Reused From Execution To Execution Of The Sp

Aug 23, 2007

after moving off VS debugger and into management studio to exercise our SQLCLR sp, we notice that the 2nd execution gets an error suggesting that our static SqlCommand object is getting reused from the 1st execution (of the sp under mgt studio). If this is expected behavior, we have no problem limiting our statics to only completely reusable objects but would first like to know if this is expected? Is the fact that debugger doesnt show this behavior also expected?

Execution Plans &<&> Proportionate Execution Times

Dec 7, 2005

Hi I am slowly getting to grips with SQL Server. As a part of this, I have been attempting to work on producing more efficient queries. This post is regarding what appears to be a discrepancy between the SQL Server execution plan and the actual time taken by a query to run. My brief is to produce an attendance system for an education establishment (I presume you know I'm not an A-Level student completing a project :p ). Circa 1.5m rows per annum, testing with ~3m rows currently. College_Year could strictly be inferred from the AttDateTime however it is included as a field because it a part of just about every PK this table is ever likely to be linked to. Indexes are not fully optimised yet. Table:CREATE TABLE [dbo].[AttendanceDets] ([College_Year] [smallint] NOT NULL ,[Group_Code] [char] (12) COLLATE SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS NOT NULL ,[Student_ID] [char] (8) COLLATE SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS NOT NULL ,[Session_Date] [datetime] NOT NULL ,[Start_Time] [datetime] NOT NULL ,[Att_Code] [char] (1) COLLATE SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS NOT NULL ) ON [PRIMARY]GO CREATE CLUSTERED INDEX [IX_AltPK_Clust_AttendanceDets] ON [dbo].[AttendanceDets]([College_Year], [Group_Code], [Student_ID], [Session_Date], [Att_Code]) ON [PRIMARY]GO CREATE INDEX [All] ON [dbo].[AttendanceDets]([College_Year], [Group_Code], [Student_ID], [Session_Date], [Start_Time], [Att_Code]) ON [PRIMARY]GO CREATE INDEX [IX_AttendanceDets] ON [dbo].[AttendanceDets]([Att_Code]) ON [PRIMARY]GOALL inserts are via an overnight sproc - data comes from a third party system. Group_Code is 12 chars (no more no less), student_ID 8 chars (no more no less). I have created a simple sproc. I am using this as a benchmark against which I am testing my options. I appreciate that this sproc is an inefficient jack of all trades - it has been designed as such so I can compare its performance to more specific sprocs and possibly some dynamic SQL. Sproc:CREATE PROCEDURE [dbo].[CAMsp_Att] @College_Year AS SmallInt,@Student_ID AS VarChar(8) = '________', @Group_Code AS VarChar(12) = '____________', @Start_Date AS DateTime = '1950/01/01', @End_Date as DateTime = '2020/01/01', @Att_Code AS VarChar(1) = '_' AS IF @Start_Date = '1950/01/01'SET @Start_Date = CAST(CAST(@College_Year AS Char(4)) + '/08/31' AS DateTime) IF @End_Date = '2020/01/01'SET @End_Date = CAST(CAST(@College_Year +1 AS Char(4)) + '/07/31' AS DateTime) SELECT College_Year, Group_Code, Student_ID, Session_Date, Start_Time, Att_Code FROM dbo.AttendanceDets WHERE College_Year = @College_YearAND Group_Code LIKE @Group_CodeAND Student_ID LIKE @Student_IDAND Session_Date <= @End_DateAND Session_Date >=@Start_DateAND Att_Code LIKE @Att_CodeGOMy confusion lies with running the below script with Show Execution Plan:--SET SHOWPLAN_TEXT ON--Go DECLARE @Time as DateTime Set @Time = GetDate() select College_Year, group_code, Student_ID, Session_Date, Start_Time, Att_Code from attendanceDetswhere College_Year = 2005 AND group_code LIKE '____________' AND Student_ID LIKE '________'AND Session_Date <= '2005-11-16' AND Session_Date >= '2005-11-16' AND Att_Code LIKE '_' Print 'First query took: ' + CAST(DATEDIFF(ms, @Time, GETDATE()) AS VarCHar(5)) + ' milli-Seconds' Set @Time = GetDate() EXEC CAMsp_Att @College_Year = 2005, @Start_Date = '2005-11-16', @End_Date = '2005-11-16' Print 'Second query took: ' + CAST(DATEDIFF(ms, @Time, GETDATE()) AS VarCHar(5)) + ' milli-Seconds'GO --SET SHOWPLAN_TEXT OFF--GOThe execution plan for the first query appears miles more costly than the sproc yet it is effectively the same query with no parameters. However, my understanding is the cached plan substitutes literals for parameters anyway. In any case - the first query cost is listed as 99.52% of the batch, the sproc 0.48% (comparing the IO, cpu costs etc support this). BUT the text output is:(10639 row(s) affected) First query took: 596 milli-Seconds (10639 row(s) affected) Second query took: 2856 milli-SecondsI appreciate that logical and physical performance are not one and the same but can why is there such a huge discrepancy between the two? They are tested on a dedicated test server, and repeated running and switching the order of the queries elicits the same results. Sample data can be provided if requested but I assumed it would not shed much light. BTW - I know that additional indexes can bring the plans and execution time closer together - my question is more about the concept. If you've made it this far - many thanks. If you can enlighten me - infinite thanks.

Execution In Scheduled Job Vs Direct Execution

Here's my case, I have written a stored procedure which will perform the following:
1. Grab data from a table using cursor,
2. Process data,
3. Write the result into another table

If I execute the stored procedure directly (thru VS.NET, or Query Analyser), it will run, but when I tried to execute it via a scheduled job, it fails.

I used the same record, same parameters, and the same statements to call the stored procedure.

Any idea?

I have 2 tables in SQL server 2000 that hold orders. These need to be posted into another table at a predefined time (ie: 4:30pm) and at the same time, access a remote address (a web service) and post certain elements of the order back.

Basically, can anyone help me out on how to execute a web page from a DTS.

I do NOT want to access a DTS from a webpage, which is all I'm finding at the moment.

What Is This Methodology Called

Jul 31, 2007

Hi everyone -

I'm stumped on what to cal this, there might even be
a method or pattern named for what i am trying to accomplish...

In the database, a number field is included on each table

When the DAL reads the record from the database, it is passed to
the client - work is possibly done to the record and is sent
back to the DAL for update.

A query is done against the table to retrieve the record again,
the numbers are compared - if they don't match, it is assumed the record
been modified by another user/thread/activity. An error is returned to the client stating the data has been changed.

if the numbers match, the record is updated with the number field being incremented by one.

what is this methodology called (beside crap :-) )

thanks

Need A So-Called SSN Encryption

Hello, perhaps you guys have heard this before in the past, but here iswhat I'm looking for.I have a SQL 2000 table with Social security numbers. We need tocreate a Member ID using the Member's real SSN but since we are notallowed to use the exact SSN, we need to add 1 to each number in theSSN. That way, the new SSN would be the new Member ID.For example:if the real SSN is: 340-53-7098 the MemberID would be 451-64-8109.Sounds simply enough, but I can't seem to get it straight.I need this number to be created using a query, as this query is areport's record source.Again, any help would be appreciated it.

How Triggers Are Called

Apr 22, 2008

This seems like a basic question but I have not been able to find the answer in the help files or by searching this forum.

Is a trigger called for each row updated or is it called once for all rows updated?

for example if I have:

Code Snippet
CREATE TRIGGER mytrigger

ON mytable
AFTER UPDATE
AS
BEGIN

EXEC e-mail-me inserted, N'mytrigger', getdate()
END

and I do this

Code Snippet
UPDATE mytable
SET mycolumn = N'whatever'
WHERE ID > 5 AND ID <= 10

Assuming there is a record for each nteger value of ID, than will mytrigger run 5 times (once for each row updated) or one time (with inserted containing all 5 rows)?

UDF Used In SubQuery: Is It Called At EACH Row?

May 6, 2008

Hi,

When a column is evaluated against an UDF in a SELECT ... or WHERE ... It makes sense that the UDF is called for every row of the SELECT. But is it still true if the UDF is called in a subquery as below?

Code Snippet

SELECT LineID, AnyText FROM dbo.UdfTest WHERE LineID IN (SELECT LineID FROM dbo.F_Bogus())
I've made a test and the SQL Profiler Trace shows that the UDF is called only once.

Can anyone confirm if my test is valid and most importantly that the UDF is called only once? FYI, I never use sub queries. This is to clarify a technical detail for our performance investigation.

Thank in advance for any help.

Here is the code to setup the test:
USE NorthWind
GO

CREATE TABLE dbo.UdfTest (
LineID int Identity(1,1) NOT NULL,
AnyText varchar(200) COLLATE database_default NOT NULL
)
GO

INSERT dbo.UdfTest (AnyText) VALUES ('Test1')
INSERT dbo.UdfTest (AnyText) VALUES ('Test2')
INSERT dbo.UdfTest (AnyText) VALUES ('Test3')
GO

CREATE FUNCTION dbo.F_Bogus (
)
RETURNS @tab TABLE (
LineID int NOT NULL,
AnyText varchar(100) COLLATE database_default NOT NULL)
AS
BEGIN
INSERT @tab (LineID, AnyText) VALUES (1, 'UDF1')
INSERT @tab (LineID, AnyText) VALUES (2, 'UDF2')

INSERT @tab (LineID, AnyText) VALUES (4, 'UDF4')
INSERT @tab (LineID, AnyText) VALUES (5, 'UDF4')

RETURN
END
GO

Here is the capture of SQL Profiler when executing the statement:

Procedure Sp_sqlagent_log_jobhistory Not Being Called

Oct 13, 2007

I am encountering an issue which is effecting our production environment, none of our sql jobs are now saving any kind of job history, nor are the status of the jobs being saved.
I have run a profiler trace and it seems as if procedure : sp_sqlagent_log_jobhistory is not being called during the execution of any of our jobs
Has anyone else encountered anything similar?

SP Not Working Correctly? When Called From App

May 3, 2006

Hi

In a stored procedure the following code snippet 1 checks against duplicate data being inserted. I've tested it with snippet 2 and it works as expected. However, when the procedure is called from ASP.NET the check seems ineffective. I still get the error msg. The application uses a SqlDataSource with the following parameters.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Bakis.

PS I want to ask a question on the ASP.NET forum .The login/pwd for this forum "get me in" to the .net forum in the sense that when I log in I see a logout link. I don't get an "ask a question" button though. Is there a separate screening for each forum?

return 0
END

snippet 2:

Need To Find Out The Name Of My Stored Proce Being Called. How Can I Do This?

Oct 12, 2006

I am maintaining some C# and ASP.NET code with SQL server 2000. My code calls a stored procedure. The code is a little confusing as to the name of the SQL Server stored procedure that is calling. At this point I don't know how to trace into or debug the stored procedure. Kind of hard to do in the first place when you are not absolutely certain as to the stored proc to be called.I can take an educated guess as to which stored procedure is being called. I figure if I can deliberately make a certain stored procedure fail then this might be able to somehow give me the name of the stored proc that I am calling. So is there a way to do this. Namely make a stored procedure fail, or to return the name of the stored Proc?I would sincerely appreciate some help with this problem.
