SP To Check For Existing Indexes Before Dropping.

I need to add syntax to a stored procedure to check for the existence of a specific indexes on a table before dropping it. If they do not exist I need it to NOT through an error message. Performing this on a table is relatively simple:
if exists (select * from sysobjects where id = object_id(N'[dbo].[TABLENAME]') and OBJECTPROPERTY(id, N'IsUserTable') = 1)
drop table [dbo].[TABLENAME]
Since indexes are not represented in sysobjects how can I do this?

Looking for suggestions.
I have a database that is giving me a bad Index error. When I go to drop the necessary Index it is telling me that it either does not exist or cannot be dropped. However when I try to build that index, it tells me one already exists.
Is there any way to drop all of the indexes or at the very least see what the indexes are? This particular database is using 2005 Express.
Any help would be great!

SQL 7 created by default a clustered index on my primary key field. I would like to drop this index and recreate it on another field, but it is not allowing me. Error message states: "An explicit DROP INDEX is not allowed... It is being used for PRIMARY KEY CONSTRAINT enforcement." Can anybody advise how I can solve this? TIA

I would like to know if there is a way to drop/ disenable all the indexes in a maintenance plan?
Or is it better to write scripts for dropping indexes and recreatig the same?
Purpose: Need to drop indexes(not the Primary key) before loading data and recreate the same after loading

Dear All,
i'm planning to drop all the non clustered indexes (as they are not congigured well) on production database, and run the latest script to create fresh non clustered indexes on specific columns.
now my doubts are
1)will the replication affect with dropping and recreating of indexes?
2)query to drop all the non clustered indexes on that database....
can i use the query delete from sysindexes where indid>1
will the query works for me to drop all the non clustered indexes?
3)is it necessary to generate a snapshot again after creating the new indexes? or can i drop and run at subscriber also?
please guide me in this regard

This is for SQL 2005 and I know how to right click an index and do a "script index as create to new query window"
Basically, the one of the Microsoft scripts or views will tell us that we have 100+ indexes that exist for a database but that they are not being used by SQL server.
I will probably take them "offline" for a while and then drop them later on.
Before dropping them, I would like to be able to recreate them within minutes if system performance is degraded after this happens.
I was working on a script to pull this info out of the sys. tables like below but was wondering if anyone already has a script or an easier way to do this. (...and I don't want to right click 100 indexes within 137 tables and script to a new window and then compile a big script)

Hi all,
I have a huge table 170 Gb of size. On that table we have 10 indexes
of around 12 GB in size.
The application is designed such that it bulk inserts the file in to
sql server. But , often we are getting time outs and some latching
isssues ( as can be seen in activity monitor).
So, will this be a good idea of dropping those indexes and then
recreating them again for better performance.
1) Its SQL 2005 Standard Edition SP1
2) Databases are in SIMPLE Recovery mode.
3) Database is not OLTP.

How do i drop/remove the identity property for an existing column in all Tables where the Identity column is a primary key.
The Script below was used to find all the tables that have an Identity Column as a primary key in a database. Now i want to remove the identity property from the Identity Columns that have a primary key in the database.

Apologies if this has been answered before, but the "Search" function doesn't seem to be working on these forums the last couple of days.
I'd just like to check if a table already exists before dropping it so that I can avoid an error if it doesn't exist. Doing a web search, I've tried along the lines of
"If (object_id(sensor_stream) is not null) drop table sensor_stream"
and
"If exists (select * from sensor_stream) drop table sensor_stream"
In both of these cases I get the error: "There was an error parsing the query. [ Token line number = 1,Token line offset = 1,Token in error = if ]"
Sooooo... what is the standard way to check for existence of a table before dropping it? Someone help? This seems like it should be simple, but I can't figure it out.

Is there any utility to migrate the existing indexes on default filegroup to a new user defined file group? The only way that I know is to delete the index and recreate with new filegroup.
How about for table? Is there any utility for migrating the existing tables to a different filegroup? The only way that I know is to create a clustered index on the new filegroup which will move the table to the new filegroup. If a clustered index exists then drop the clustered index and recreate it with the new filegroup
I am looking for an existing utility which would do the above?

I have an SSIS package in VS 2010 that uses flat files to load database tables. I would like to check for the flat files existing before continuing to run the package. The flat files each have their own connection manager. I was wondering if I could use the connection managers to determine the file names instead of creating a Script Task and hard-coding each of the file names to check.

Using SSIS 2012 (within Visual Studio) on Windows 7.
Before allowing my Data Flow task to fire, I'd like to check the target table (OLE DB Destination) for a specific date value in a specific field. I've seen how the Lookup Task is commonly used to check for dupes before inserting, but I'm not able to use that method because the data value I want to search the table for is contained in a Global Variable (let's say "MyVariableDate").
Is there any way to check for any records in a target table where Date1 = MyVariableDate (i.e. scanning the entire table for any occurrence of MyVariableDate in the Date1 field)?

I know a WMI event watcher can be used to watch for a new file being added to a folder. However, I need to check for new folders being added to an existing folder. I haven't been able to find a post on doing this. Is there a way in WQL to check for a new folder being added instead of a new file? I've used SQL for years, but am new to SSIS.

But I get this error :

I'm working to improve performance on a database I've inherited, and there are several thousand indexes. I've got a list of ones which should definitely exist within the database, and I'm looking to strip out all the others and start fresh, though this list is still quite large (1000 or so).
Is there a way I can remove all the indexes that are not in my list without too much trouble? I.e. without having to manually go through them all individually. The list is currently in a csv file.
I'm looking to either automate the removal of indexes not in the list, or possibly to generate the Create statements for the indexes on the list and simply remove all indexes and then run these statements.
As an aside, when trying to list all indexes in the database, I've found various scripts to do this, but found they all seem to produce differing results. What is the best script to list all indexes?

I went to look at the connection string previously entered for a dataset created in a new report, and am not seeing anything intuitive for bringing up the associated datasource dialog box that was used to enter name, type and connection string. I'm also noticing nothing intuitive for deleting an existing dataset. How do you do these two very simple things in an existing project? I dont see the dataset in solution explorer, I see it only in the text box on the data tab and in a limited kind of way on the dataset view where the columns show and maint is allowed mostly on the columns only. I tried hilighting the dataset here and hitting the delete key to no avail.

Hi All,
I would like to restore database using RESTORE DATABASE ... REPLACE command.
If database exists already and has any open connections this command will fail.
I would like to close all existing connections to specific database before running RESTORE DATABASE ... REPLACE command.
I can do closing from Management Studio using checkbox "Close Existing Connection" when deleting database. Actually I need to do the same but from script.
Please advice me how to do it.

So I'm reading http://www.sql-server-performance.com/tips/clustered_indexes_p2.aspx and I come across this:
When selecting a column to base your clustered index on, try to avoid columns that are frequently updated. Every time that a column used for a clustered index is modified, all of the non-clustered indexes must also be updated, creating additional overhead. [6.5, 7.0, 2000, 2005] Updated 3-5-2004
Does this mean if I have say a table called Item with a clustered index on a column in it called itemaddeddate, and several non-clustered indexes associated with that table, that if a record gets modified and it's itemaddeddate value changes, that ALL my indexes on that table will get rebuilt? Or is it referring to the table structure changing?
If so does this "pseudocode" example also cause this to occur:
sqlstring="select * from item where itemid=12345"
rs.open sqlstring, etc, etc, etc
rs.Fields("ItemName")="My New Item Name"
rs.Fields("ItemPrice")=1.00
rs.Update
Note I didn't explicitly change the value of rs.fields("ItemAddedDate")...does rs.Fields("ItemAddedDate")=rs.Fields("ItemAddedDate") occur implicitly, which would force the rebuild of all the non-clustered indexes?

I have a requirement to only rebuild the Clustered Indexes in the table ignoring the non clustered indexes as those are taken care of by the Clustered indexes.
In order to do that, I have taken the records based on the fragmentation %.
But unable to come up with a logic to only consider rebuilding the clustered indexes in the table.

Is there a way we can prevent a object owner from dropping his tables. Example:
There is a user called 'tom' who is given create table permissions, 'tom' creates the table completes his dev and then the table is moved into production where 'tom' is still the owner. However, in production, 'tom' does not have the create table privs. Because 'tom' is the owner of the table, he is still able to drop the table in production. This is what I am trying to avoid. I would like to retain 'tom' as the owner and want to take away his create/drop privs.
