Unable To Access Install Windows Components

Feb 26, 2007

I didn´t know where to put this so sorry if this is not the appropriate place.

I am running Windows XP pro sp2 with visual studio 2005, ms sql server 2005, and a number of other applications.

My problem is that I am not allowed to install new windows components(I want to install IIS). When I try to access from either control panel, add/remove programs, Install new windows components or directly from the winXP cd I get the following error in a pop-up form and I can only press "OK":

"Another copy of Setup is already running. Complete the other Setup or restart Windows."

I am not running the instance more than once. I do this as the first thing after a restart with the same result. When looking at the processes in the task manager I cant see anything unusual.

It is a pretty slow computer so that may have something to do with it - some timeout or similar.

It is getting pretty frustrating so any suggestions are more than welcomed! thanks.

EDIT: I used process explorer to locate some stalled windows update process which I killed. Then msmqocm.inf was missing, but that seems to be a FAQ.

Setup Issue: Unable To Install SQL Server 2005 Express On Windows 2003 Server SP2

Aug 17, 2006

Hello Experts,

I have been unable to install SQL Express 2005 Server on my Windows 2003 Server (with SP2 installed). I keep getting an error message saying that Microsoft Windows Installer 3.1 is not installed.

So, I downloaded Microsoft Windows Installer 3.1 v2 (WindowsInstaller-KB893803-v2-x86.exe) but whenever I try to install it I get an error message saying that "the Service Pack version of this system is newer than the update you are applying" and that there is no need to install the update and it stops there.

Is there a workaround to this? How can I get Microsoft Windows Installer 3.1 installed? I tried going to the Windows Update site, I already have everything installed and I even started the Windows Installer service manually. Has anyone else experienced this?

How can I get SQL Server 2005 Express installed if not how can I install SQL Server 2000 on tihs machine? The only reason I am trying to install SQL Server 2005 is because wanted to try it so I uninstalled SQL Server 2000 now I can no longer install SQL Server 2000 again because it won't let me because of the SP2 patch.

Help! :(

SQL Server 2005 Express Install---Win 3.1 Installer

Jul 25, 2006

Okay, this must be the silliest question of the day. I downloaded SSE, but when it ran, it noted that I needed Win 3.1 Installer. Went and got that, installed it, and restarted. But where is my SSE download? I tried to go back to the SSE download, but it won't download the file again. Nothing happens when I click on the download link.

TIA,

MaryMary

SQLX05 SP1 Upgrade To SP2 Acted Like A Failure, But Seems To Work?

Dec 20, 2007

Hi guys, got an interesting scenario: I have a new Dell server with an "empty" Windows Server 2003 SE SP2 installation (all latest updates), joined to a 2003-native domain, ~60 GB/free space, 2 GB ram, P4, etc etc. I loaded up BackupExec 11d 7170, which installs SQL Server 2005 Express Edition SP1.

Before I even used Backup Exec, I knew I wanted to get SQLX05 SP2 installed. First, I followed the preliminary steps listed in the SQL Server 2005 Express Edtion SP2 readme file (backup master/model/msde and bedb/be_dlo databases, verify DB space, verify enabled services/accounts, stop dependant services).

By now it was after-hours and I was away from the office, so I logged into the server with my 2k3 Enterprise Admin account via Remote Desktop. I changed the server from Windows Update to Microsoft Update, and it found/downloaded/installed SQLX05 SP2 for me.

But about 7 minutes later, Microsoft Update told me it failed with code 0x3B30- and the Help & Support had no help for that code.

I started to look around the 'net for the error- I found that some people went into Add/Remove programs, clicked Change on SQLX05, selected the instance, and wound up clicking on "complete the suspended install"- unfortunately, it wanted the source for sqlrun_sql.msi, which I didn't have anywhere, so I clicked Cancel.

I looked at the server, and finally found the summary.txt file buried in C:program filesmicrosoft sql server90setup bootstraploghotfix. It showed passing the prereq check, product detection (2047/express), no disqual'd prods, no locked files, and then had this section:

Product Installation Status
Product : Express Database Services (BKUPEXEC)
Product Version (Previous): 2047

SQL Express Features : SQL_Data_Files,SQL_Engine,SQL_Replication,SQL_SharedTools
Error Number : 15152
Error Description : Unable to install Windows Installer MSI file

Then I saw the hotfix.txt file in the same directory, which had at the end:

Now here's the strange part- I saw something on the 'net that suggested rebooting and applying it again. So I rebooted the server, went to Microsoft Update- and it didn't show that I needed the SQLX05 SP2 update. I checked the Application event log, and it showed that during the SQLX05 startup SQLX05 reported version number 9.00.3042.00! I ran a TSQL command (with sqlcmd) and systemproperty('productlevel') came back as SP2.

I finished my TSQL command, and got a popup from Microsoft Error reporting saying some errors happened recently for hotfix.exe. I clicked showdetails, and the p-vals with information were P2=0x3b30, P4=0x3b30, P5=copyengine.cpp@1653 , P7=sql9express. So I sent the report up.

Out of curiousity, I went back to Add/Remove programs, clicked on SQLX05 and "change", selected the instance, next, next, and wound up at the SQL Server Install Wizard. It STILL had a box for me to click on saying "Complete the Suspended Installation"- so I cancelled it.

But everything "looks" fine! Is it? Can I trust it?? Could Sql Server Express have automatically ran the failed sql files after the reboot?

Thanks!

SQL Server 2005 Upgrade Failure - Password Requirements

Oct 20, 2006

I am trying to do an upgrade in place from SQL Server 2000 SP3a to SQL Server 2005. I am encountering the following error. SQL Server Setup has encountered the following problem:[Microsoft][SQL Native Client][SQL Server] Password validation failed. The password does not meet Windows policy requirements because it is too short...To continue, correct the problem and then SQL Server setup again. I read the other posting and it mentioned that the sa account needs to be changed. I have changed the sa account to meet the passowrd requirements for our system and have changed the following services I could find over to my domain account which I know meets the password restrictions. If I do a new install, everything seems to load correctly. What options do I have to do this upgrade in place?

Thanks for your help,

Bill

Recovery From Windows Failure

Sep 13, 2006

Hi all,

We've got a problem with our server in that Windows has totally died - a routine upgrade appears to have gone wrong and the repair function of the Windows installer keeps getting stuck in a loop so I've given up on that front. What I was wondering is:

1. If I install a fresh copy of Windows 2003 R2 over the top of the existing install will that kill MSSQL Sever 2005 and/or Windows Sharepoint Services?
2. If so, is there a simple way to get them back?
3. If I install another copy of Windows on the D: drive is there a recommended way to move the MSSQL databases & Sharepoint to the newer install or a way of pointing the new install at the old databases?

I'm not an admin person (i'm a developer normally) so I haven't got a lot of background in this stuff so any tips, pointers or ideas are welcome. If this is covered somewhere on the MS site I'm happy to read but I'm just getting lost at the moment.

And, yes, I realise that backups are a good thing but the latest backups are not new enough for some items. The backup process has been adjusted accordingly.

Thanks
Michael.

Failure On SP2 Install

Jan 29, 2008

I have a fresh install of MS SQL 2005 Developer Edition on my local box. I have just tried to install SP2 and the status reads "failure" for the product "Database Services", instance "MSSQLSERVER".

What could cause this? Do I need to turn of the service before applying the service pack? I supplied it the proper credentials which tested ok during the beginning of install...

Should I just try to install the patch again? How can I verify that the patch has been successfully applied?

Thanks for any help.

SharePointRS.msi Install Failure

When I run SharePointRS.msi it ends and rolls back with a failure. Looking at the log i get the following:

Any ideas on how to fix this? I would have thought that the FeaturesReportServerfeature.xml file would be created by the installer.

I have tried redownloading and re running the installer.

This is running on SQL 2005 with SP2 and MOSS 2007 on the same box.

SQL 2005 SP1 Install Failure

Oct 26, 2006

I have attempted to install SP1 on to my SQL 2005 Server numerous times and cannot get it to be successful. It failes on database services everytime and the log and event log report that my account cannot change permissions on the Data directory. My system is running Server 2003 R2 Ent x64. I have a Cluster setup with no second node at this time (future additon). I am also using a mount point inside the Data directory for logs. I have monitored the install using FileMon and do not see any file access issues during the installation process. I have also looked at the files and directories within the Data directory and all security ACLs seem fine. I am running the install with an account that has admin permission on the box. The service account I am using to run the sql service does not have admin permission but it is in the groups that SQL sets up at install time and those groups are assigned to the Data directory and other directories that the install configures. Any and all help us greatly appriciated!!

Sql Server Install Failure II

May 1, 2008

I've been bulldozing thru a SQL Dev Ed Install. Now I am at the point that many services have been installed but overall the install failed. I do install from cmd prompt (command line). This is how I ran it:

Z:SQLSER~6Servers>start /wait setup.exe /qn USERNAME="Alex BB" COMPANYNAME="Alex BB" INSTALLSQLDIR="C:Program FilesMicrosoft Sql Server" INSTALLSQLDATADIR=INSTALLSQLDIRData ADDLOCAL=ALL INSTANCENAME=MSSQLSERVER SQLACCOUNT="DDMNVT61Alex BB" SQLPASSWORD="***somePW***" SQLACCOUNT="DDMNVT61Alex BB" SQLPASSWORD="***somePW***" AGTACCOUNT="DDMNVT61Alex BB" AGTPASSWORD="***somePW***" ASACCOUNT="DDMNVT61Alex BB" ASPASSWORD="***somePW***" RSACCOUNT="DDMNVT61Alex BB" RSPASSWORD="***somePW***" SQLBROWSERAUTOSTART=0 SQLAUTOSTART=0 AGTAUTOSTART=0 ASAUTOSTART=0 RSAUTOSTART=0 SECURITYMODE=SQL SAPWD="***somePW***"

This cmd line is actually a one after a small correction. The clause highlighed was put before ADDLOCAL=ALL. I assumed that cause the problem and changed the position of the clause but now when I tried to run the same command again I got an error that access was denied. This is the first time I got this error.

These are error messages from summary.txt of the run that I consider to be partially successful:

When I checked the Program FilesMicrosoft Sql Server folder I saw no Sql instance MSSQLMSSQL.1 as I used to see in SqlExpress. therefore no DATA folder was created. Was it because I messed up the order of the clauses? If this is the case, then how shall I go about correcting the mishap? Now it seems the access is denied.

I can delete the registry keys and delete the folders again. I did it before while trying to get rid of SQL Express. The Browser (Management Studio) was corrupted and caused many problems.. Is this the way to go, to delete the registry keys?

Any comments will be appreciated.

Thanks.

The Sql 2000 machine was just now installed and applied with SP4 and has only system databases I want to try configuring Log Shipping in sql 2000 and then perform some testing by upgrading it to sql 2005.........so thats why i went for sql 2000.The OS is Windows 2003 server with SP1 and has sufficient hard disk space. I knew that it is possible to perform Upgrade from Sql 2000 SP3 or later (Enterprise edition) to Sql 2005 Enterprise edition. But when I run the sql 2005 Enterprise edition Setup, I provide the instance name in the dialog box! and beneath it there is "Installed instances" box is present if i click it, it shows the version and edition of my sql 2000 instance as 8.00.194 which is nothing but Sql 2000 RTM version. Hence I am unable to proceed with the installation as it says to refer the version and edition upgrades are not matching as per the requirements........But if i open the query analyser for that instance and type

Code Block

Select @@Version or Select Serverproperty('Productlevel') it displays the o/p as SP4Also in the error log it shows as 8.02039 which is Sql 2000 SP4 I am a bit confused even though sp4 is installed i am unable to perform the upgrade ? Unable To Upgrade SRS 2000 To 2005

Apr 18, 2008

Hello all,

My name is Elizabeth. I'm currently trying to upgrade our Reporting Server to version 2005. The SRS that's currently installed on our CRM server is version 2000, and we want to upgrade that to 2005 so that we can use VS 2005 to write new reports (since SRS 2000 is not compatible with VS 2005).

So I followed the steps as on this link http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms144267.aspx

However, I'm stuck at step# 11. As it says on the link: "If a component has a check box that is unavailable, the component does not qualify for upgrade to SQL Server 2005." I did get something like below; the check box is unavailable.

When I click on the "Detail" button on that menu, I get a message like below:

If I click on "Next" anyway from the menu, I get this error message:

I'm just wondering why it doesn't let me upgrade to 2005. The current version of SRS that's installed in our CRM server is Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Reporting Service Standard Edition. According to Microsoft link http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143393.aspx that edition should be upgradable.

It just crossed my mind actually; could it be because our Window Server is only using Service Pack 2, while according to that link the server has to use SP3 version or later. Please clarify me if this is the case.

Could you please help me on this one? I really appreciate it!! Thanks in advanced!!

Failure To Install SQL Agent For SQL Express

Nov 4, 2006

I just tried to install the file:

D:WINDOWSMicrosoft.NETFrameworkv2.0.50727InstallUtil.exe SQLAgent.exe by running it from a command prompt.

and got an error that the system could not find the file or one of its components. It is a farily new install. I do not think I've lost any files any time.

What is the problem?

Thanks.

SQL Server Installation Failure And Can't Un-install

Nov 15, 2007

I seem to have gotten myself between a rock and a hard place. I have tried everything I know and am sending this post as a last resort before wiping my computer drive and re-installing everything. This would not be the end of the world. All the software on my computer is registered and legal and all that, but getting things set up again is not something I look forward to. Here's the situation .....
I have been trying out SQL Server 2005 Express on a test server and have worked out all kinds of good things, including working remotely, over our network, from my computer. We decided to get the full version (SQL Server 2005 Standard) before going any further so that I could have all the cool tools and stuff. We got the full version installed on a new server

and I have been working on it using SQL Server Management Studio Express to get things started. Yesterday I decided I was ready to start going thru the tutorials for SSIS and SSAS, so I uninstalled the Express version of Management Studio and all other segments of Express that were on my local computer, got out the Standard version CDs and installed the workgroups segment on my computer. After several false-starts (re having to load things like IIS and reload .NET framework and then restart the SQL Server installation) I thought I finally made it all the way thru. During this last time thru a message popped up about not enough virtual memory, but the installation continued - so I left it going. When the "finish" screen came up and I clicked "finish", I first went to Surface Config and set things up as I had them before, then tried going to Managment Studio, but it was not in the programs list. I went back to Config. Manager and tried to see if something just needed to be turned on, or whatever, and started getting application failure errors, with a message to look at the install log. In that log there is a message about installation failure due to memory shortage. I should not be getting this problem, as far as I can tell. My hard drive has 24 gigs free and I have 1 gig of ram. In any case, I tried un-installing (thru add/remove programs) and when I do I get a failure error there too. Finally, I tried running the install again, figuring - as I have experienced on other software - that sometimes the second time thru straightens things out. No such luck, and another try at un-install gave the same results. I realize I am being somewhat vague about the error messages. I can get them if I need to, but I thought I would just toss this situation out to you all first, since it may not matter exactly what the failure messages are! Any suggestions?

Thanks a billion!

SQL Service Pack 2 Failure To Install

Feb 24, 2007

I am a member of the Administrators group, and there is plenty of space in all hard drives, plus the temp directory is open for "everybody" to full-control it. Yet the Service Pack 2 database engine fails, all other components upgrade fine.

SQL Server 2005 Install Failure.

Dec 22, 2007

SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edition X64 keeps failing during the install. Every single compnent installes EXCEPT the actual database engine. The only error message I get is that the server failed to install because of a fatal error. This happens when the installer is trying to set "internal parameters" on the database engine install phase.

I have tried uninstaling everything and even used the Windows Install Clean up tool to clean out bogus references after my 1st attempt to install the DB server, but nothing has helped. I hope someone has some ideas on how to proceed.

The server is a brand new Dell PowerEdge 1900 SC running 2 Quad Core Xeon 2.0 GHz processors, 8 GB of RAM and Windows Server 20003 RC2 X64 factory installed from Dell.

I attempted to post the verbose setup log in this post, but it was to long. I can email the text file or upload it to our web server and link it in here if some one wants to see it. It wasn't a whole lot of help to me.

SQL Failover Cluster Install Failure

Sep 19, 2007

When trying to install SQL 2005 as a failover cluster in a Windows 2003 64 bit SP 2 cluster, I receive the following error when trying to select the installation path after choosing to install as a failover cluster.

_________________________
TITLE: Microsoft SQL Server Setup
------------------------------
The drive specified cannot be used for program location. Program files must be installed on a valid local disk available on all cluster nodes. The valid values are
__________________________

There is a knowledge base artical that says this can be from not installing the software with an account with admin permissions on all the servers in the cluster with the 64 bit install, but the account I used is an admin on both servers.

The only thing that I can think is causing the problem is that it is setup to boot from our SAN and it is using one fabric. By default Microsoft Clustering doesnt like this, but we use the newest storeport driver and applied the registry key supplied in KB article 886569 to resolve this. I could not find any documentation showing that this would limit a SQL 2005 Failover Cluster from seeing the shared storage.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
