SQL 2000 Licensing With CALs
Dec 20, 2006
Hi,
I didn't find any other forum to ask this and I didn't find any matching post for my question, so I post it here:
We have an application that is running on 2 web servers connected to a sql2000 server with a 2-processor license ... so I think there we have no problem no matter how many users are using our web application.
But the web application is producing a huge amount of logs that we want to analyze on a distinct multi-proc sql2000 server with a huge amount of harddisk space that's running with CAL licensing (not really sure how many we have for that server).
In a perfect solution we will provide access to the logs via our 2 web servers using the same application, but only for a given number of users (the number of users we hav CALs for). I think using that approach we get into licensing trouble.
Would it be ok to start a second web site on the same servers with an IP restriction allowing only "n" predefined IP endpoints so that only these machines can access the sql-Server that is running in CAL mode?
I'm not really sure what the CAL model really wants to allow - "n" physical users (persons), "n" end user computers, "n" database connections, max "n" of all together and is it concurrent, in a time of one day, the lifetime of the server? Maybe there's a document with some real world examples that I didn't find.
CU,
Sven

Hi All,
My company has Windows Small Business Server 2003 Premium Edition installed. I am wondering if we need additional SQL CALs (besides the SBS CALs) for the SQL 2000 that is installed with SBS 2003 Premium Edition.
Thanks in advance for all your feedbacks.

We're going to move the database servers from 2000 to 2005, and would like to know if we need to buy new CALs too.

We have a server running Win 2000 Server with SQL 2000 Server.
1) How can I tell which of the 20 network users have SQL 2000 Cals?
2) How can I tell wether a Win 2000 Server client has a Device or User Cal.
Thanks

There seem to be a slew of options.
Finally figuring out that I can't use Express, I need to temporarily have my own SQL Server 2000 db server running. Hopefully just a couple of months, but who knows how long it'll take to convert over to MySQL.
Anyway, I need this db server to be on one machine. One web server will be accessing it (for one db).
What type of license do I need? Is it really the massively-priced per processor type? Or can I use another?

Currently we have SQL 7 standard server with 100 user CALs. We are planning to upgrade to SQL 2000. What happens to the CALs we have already purchased for SQL 7?
Do we need to pay again for user CALs on SQL 2000? Or can we pay just for upgrade the server software?
I am thankful for any clarifications.

We have a SQL Server 2000 Enterprise Edition box that contains roughly 100 Databases which does NOT have RS installed. Can we legally install RS on another (non-SQL) server without buying a SQL license, if it connects only to this SQL Server box?
If not, can we use a Standard Edition license for the RS box, and use it to connect to the EE box?

Hi,
I have a client that has a licensed SQL 2005 environment running on a commercial site. I need to install SQL 2000 as well to support a piece of software that does not run on SQL 2005. The client believes that their license covers them to run both versions of the software - is this correct?
If so, they no longer have the install set for SQL 2000 so is there somewhere I can get this from? I work for a Microsoft partner so we have our MSDN version of SQL 2000 but I suspect that would not work with the clients key?
Unfortunately the client is in a different country so it's not easy to just try it and see.
Any help would be gratefully received.

SQL 200 introduce changes to licensing. There are two licensing modes, Per Seat and Per Processor.
Is there a way to change the licensing mode from Per Seat to Per Processor for a current SQL Installation

Hello,
I have two question with respect to the developer edition licensing in SQL Server 2000 and 2005:
Question 1
I wanted to install a developer edition on a Development/Test Server. The server needs to be accessed by our development and Testing team of a team of 20 from their workstations. Is that possible?
Question 2
And if so what are the different licensing options that I can choose from considering that I don't want to install a developer edition of sql server on each workstation? The developer edition will be installed on the Dev/Test Server and the workstations will connect to the server using NT or Standard authentication.
Looking forward for any advice and suggestions.
Thanks!

Hello everyone,
I have live application in Greece with 300 users. VB5 with SQL Server 6.5
SP5a. The system is being totally upgrade to use SQL Server 7, the
application has also been upgraded.
The client therefore has 300 CALs for SQL Server 6.5.
If SQL Server 7 is being installed, do the clients need to purchase another
300 CALs for SQL Server 7, or do the existing CALs allow for access to SQL
Server 7. (i.e are they transferable). In what blocks can these be purchased
in, can you provide a website URL for reference.
An urgent response to this would be appreciated as I have technical people
(not DBAs, nor am I a DBA !) on site.
regards

Hi,I am slightly confused about the meaning of a 'device cal'(specifically for sql server but I guess the same applies to other mslicences)In the examples about device cals, there is a picture of a number ofwindows desktops connected to a database server. each desktop canpotentially be used by a number of users and requires one device cal.All well and good. Now, say I have a web application hosted hosted on a different machineand connecting to SQL server. the SQL server licencing FAQ says"A device CAL covers multiple users' access to server software from asingle, shared device."is my web server a shared device? so does the web server require asingle device CAL no matter how many users use it?Andy

Hello all,
This seems like a simple question but I still haven't been able to get an answer from Microsoft Canada. We're looking at buying 75 device cals to connect to a single instance of SQL Server Standard Edition. Our question is on how those licenses are assigned and/or activated.
Do we need to manually do something for each station or is it an automated process done the first time a station connects to the server? We also wat to understand what happens when a workstation dies and is replaced by another one. Do you have to do something on the server to transfer the license to the new station ?
In other words, when using device cals (and/or user cals), do you have to do any type of license management or is it all transparent ?

Help me please!!!
I'm going crazy trying to find out the license deal for SQL Server 2000 Developer Edition. It seems that here (in the UK) the Developer edition exists and you can buy it but, Micrisoft (UK) and various resellers etc don't know the licensing deal!!!
Now, i've read a snippet somewhere about the developer edition that for a fixed price of around $499 you get a server license limited to 8 connections and you don't have to buy any CALs! However my reseller thinks that you still have to buy CALs up to maximum of 8? Well, i don't think so!!
Has anyone got this edition and know the deal?
Many thanks...

We are about to deploy an application that uses SQL Server 7.0. Enterprise edition running on a dual processor machine. We expect a maximum concurrent usage of about 500 users, normally about 150/200. Could anyone advise me what the cheapest license arrangement would be, I've had conflicting views from Microsoft and two third party software suppliers? We intend to use the machine in future for other applications but as yet have very little idea of usage.

Hi SQL TEAM
I'm in a bit of a situation.
Please bare with me as i explain.
We would like to host a web server
Web Server = Windows 2003 Server Standard Edition running IIS
All the website hosted on this server will be available to the public.
Question 1.How do i licenses Windows 2003 Server Standard Edition?
Question 2.Do i need a CAL for every single person browsing to any of the websites hosted on the above server.
As far as i know you can not get a PER CPU license for Windows 2003 Server, is this true.
Question 3. Where would a CAL be required.
Question 4. How about remote desktop to the above server? that requires a CAL.
Thanks in advance for any replies

Obviously I'm missing something here (Like a brain??), but from the documentation I'm somewhat confused as to the licensing aspect of the everywhere edition.
Scenario: I have a client (small business for example) and I'm updeating their MS Access application, currently having the front and back ends seperate. May I substitute SQL Everywhere edition in place of the data back-end without further licensing, or will a CAL be required?
Thanks,

Hi,
I need to know if I have to buy an extra license for my subscriber server in the following two scenarios. I have checked similar threads in the forum but could not find an exact answer.
Scenario 1 :
Server A : Publisher - SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition.
Server B : Subscriber - SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition
Server B has ONLY the replica of one or more DBs of Server A
I have already purchased SQL Server processor license for Server A
Replication Type : Transaction Replication
Scenario 2 :
Server A : Publisher - SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition.
Server B : Subscriber - SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition
Server B has the replica of one or more DBs of Server A plus one or more operational (mostly reporting) DBs
I have already purchased SQL Server processor license for Server A
Replication Type : Transaction Replication
Thanks
Hamed

I wonder that if i install it to my customer's pc, do they need to pay for SQL express's licensing since it is free now.. Thanks in advance.Regards, Anson

The MSDE licence says that it can be used for up to 5 concurrent users. My app is an ASP.NET app, so won't I just be using one user - the ASP.NET account? I'm wondering whether we can get away with just buying a new server and sticking MSDE on it rather than shelling out for another £5000 SQL server licence...

I expected to find loads of posts regarding licensing but surprising not.
I have SQL Server Developer Edition, which I believe gives me the right to build and distribute applications which use MSDE (http://www.microsoft.com/sql/msde/howtobuy/msdeuse.asp).
Is there any requirement for the end user to purchase any microsoft product or license?

Quick licensing question...If I am developing an asp.net application using sql server 2005...what is the licensing situation? Do I need just the one CAL for the server with IIS that is hosting the application? or is it one CAL per database connection? One CAL for every person using my application? I'm not sure and I want to make sure that I comply with the licensing for my application. Thanks in advance!Phil
