SQL 2000 Management With VS.NET Pro
Feb 4, 2004VS.NET Professional doesn't let you manage/edit database objects in SQL Server 2000 like Enterprise, but it does in MSDE2000.
Is there a tweak that will let me do this?

Remote Management Of Sql Server 2000
Apr 16, 2001One of my clients is upgrading to Sql 2000. I currently administer her server using a SQL 7 interface but I will need to upgrade that interface to sql 8 now to be able to give her the same level of support. How do I go about installing the required clients on my desktop in such a way as to not interfere with my own installation of MSDE?
I use Windows NT workstation 4. If I have a choice do I install developer's edition of SQL2000 or personal edition?
We also have pcanywhere access but this is too slow and unsure for my money.

This is a bit of a beginner questions... I need to start managing an SQL server 2000 using SQL server management studio (2005). I've heard there may be an issue with backwards compatibility, which might cause error when creating new tables or stored procedures... could someone please list the pros and cons on this?

Aug 9, 2006Hello,I had SQL2000 server running fine on the windows 2003 box. I then installedSQL 2005 Express. They both worked together fine. I then uninstalled SQL2005 Express and installed SQL 2005 Server. But when I open SQL ServerManagement Studio, I can only connect to the SQL 2000 engine. In the Objectexplorer, it says v8.0.2039 (which I think is SQL 2000 Server, because I cansee the existing SQL 2000 databases).How can I get SQL Server Management Studio to 'see' the SQL 2005 databaseengine so I can create tables? I *think* its running because there is the'sqlservr.exe' process running, and during installation there is no issues.When I open SQL Server Management Studio, I choose 'Database Engine', thenmy local Servername with Windows Authentication. I have upgraded my local to sql server 2005, but still need to access the remote instance which is still at version 2008/8.0.
Enterprise Manager has been removed (by the SQL server 2005 installation)
Does anyone know how I can restart older version of SQL server instance (ie 2000/8.0) using SQL server Management Studio?
I don't have admin access on the server which the sql remote instance is hosted. Can get around it by asking the sys admin guy to do it for now but would prefer to continue to be able to do it myself.
SQL Server Configuration Manager can only manage SQL server 2005 versions - a nice little caveat!
Is there a way to stop/start remote services using 'net stop/start'? - without having to write code....
I'll continue to search for a solution, but if someon can point me in the right direction, I'd be most greatful.

Jul 5, 2006I never noticed it before, but I am now using Management Studio to administer our sql databases and the issue became apparent. One of the databases located on a sql 2000 server, says "6.5 compatible", when viewed from Management Studio (but not from Enterprise Manager).
What are the step needed to upgrade the database? (I think I need to run the Sql 2005 Upgrade Advisor first, fix any errors found, then manually change compatibility mode (to 80) from the sql 2000 server where the database is located. )

Things that were easy in Enterprise Manager with Client Network Utility and Query Analyzer seem impossible, difficult, or maybe just hidden in Management Studio. If it is there, the documentation sure doesnt tell you how to find it.

However, when I try to import my .bak files created in SQL Server Management Studio Express I get the following error:"The backed-up database has on-disk structure version 611. The server
supports version 539 and cannot restore or upgrade this database.
RESTORE FILELIST is terminating abnormally."I have Googled this error and learnt that 2005 .bak files are not compatible with 2000 .bak files. I have recently installed the SQL Server Management Studio Express but I do not find Management Tools in order to create scheduled backups and shrinking of the databases. I was under the impression that this should be included in the Management Studio. I use the SQL 2005 Express for smaller customers who run the SQL on a desktop unit. I need a way to backup the data to a server machine for backup purposes. I have uninstalled and reinstalled to no avail.

we will update the old SQL Server 2000 databases to SQL Server 2005 when we are ready to use 2005 SQL Server.
Questions:
1. Any expected problems to upgrade old 2000 databases to new 2005 SQL Server?
2. I have installed both 2005/Management Studio Express and 2000/Enterprise Manager in my PC. Any expected
problems when running both 2000 and 2005 SQL Server at the same database server?
3. What is the best configuration for running SQL Server 2005 when we have old 2000 databases? Upgade or not upgrade?

Feb 17, 2004My objective is to use Enterprise Manager to move (copy) my SQL db from the server to my windows desktop computer.
I downloaded MSDE and am having trouble installing it, no doubt because I do not understand the documentaion (ReadMeMSDE2000A.htm).
When I try to run setup, I get that message that says:
"A strong SA password is required for security reasons. Please use SAPWD switch to supply the same."
Considering my purpose, do I need a "strong" SA password? If not, how do I get around it? If yes, how do I set it up?
I am a Mac user so I have poor windows skills, please make it as painless as possible for me, thanks!

SQL 2005 Thinks A SQL 2000 Backup Is Corrupt, But SQL 2000 Restores Just Fine
Jul 19, 2007I am attempting to move some SQL 2000 databases to SQL 2005. My main production database does not seem to want to move. When I use the SQL 2005 GUI the .bak backup file is marked 'Incomplete'. When I attempt to restore the backup file I get a 'RESTORE detected an error on page (0:0) in database' message. I saw a thread in the SQL Express forum suggesting trying to restore from the T-SQL level to get the GUI out of the picture and I get the same 'error on page (0:0)' message. However when I take the same file and use SQL 2000 Enterprise Manager it restores with no problems.
Any ideas?

May 19, 2008Hi, I am trying to edit some data from a SQL2000-datasource in ASP.NET 2.0 and have a problem with a column that has bit-data and is used for selection. SQL2005 works fine when declaring <SelectParameters> <asp:Parameter DefaultValue="TRUE" Name="APL" Type="boolean" /> </SelectParameters>When running this code with SQL2000, there are no error-msgs, but after editing a record the "APL"-column looses its value of 1 and is set to 0. Looks like an issue with type-conversion, we've hit incompatibilities between SQL200 and 2005 with bit/boolean several times before. So, how is this done correctly with SQL2000? (I've tried setting the Type to "int16" -> err. Also setting Defval="1" gave an err) ThanksMichael

Reconnecting Access 2000 Front End To New Instance Of SQLServer 2000
Jul 27, 2004I recently had to reinstall a new instance of SQLServer 2000, but was unable to use the previous server name. As a result, my Access2000 front end is not happy with it's linked tables. I can't seem to find anyplace within Access to universally change the address of the SQLServer used as the back-end for all linked tables.
When I do try to access the linked tables through Access, I get an error, and the option to change the server location. When I try to type-in the new SQLServer location, there is an attempt to reconnect to SQLServer, but a whole lot of errors are generated, and none of the data is transferred into the Access table.
I really don't want to have to re-do my Access front end, so it seems it would be easiest to somehow reinstall SQLServer to have the same server location it used to. Is there a good way to completely erase all traces of SQLServer so that I can have better luck reinstalling it to the same location it used to be in? Just using the uninstall program from SQLServer doesn't seem to be cutting it.
