SQL 2000 TLog Restores In 2005

Jun 3, 2007

With Migrating from SQL 2000 to SQL 2005 I realise that there are a few options available.

A SQL 2000 backup is able to be restored into 2005 and is workable however there are some issues with internals that have changed. I have identified some DDL which would need to be modified to work correctly.

If the Backup is restored and left in a recoverable state does 2005 allow for 2000 TLog backups to be restored as well ? I am assuming that as you can restore a full db backup that this is allowed.

I am asking the question as i have a very short and fixed deadline of moving from 2000 to 2005. A new datacentre is being moved to and the old DC is being turned off. all new hardware is being placed in the new DC so i need to move from the old to the new with very little downtime to the DB or app.

My approach is as follows

1. Full DB Backup (2000) copied across to 2005 server and loaded being left in a recoverable state.
2. Tlog backups copied across on scheduled basis and loaded to a point in time.
3. Test new 2005 DB with app/web frontend
4. Bring both in sync again and then perform 1 final Tlog backup, copy and load bringing app online again with very little downtime.

Has anybody tried this approach ? does anybody see any issues with my approach ? all comments welcome on this.

Thx

SQL 2005 Thinks A SQL 2000 Backup Is Corrupt, But SQL 2000 Restores Just Fine

Jul 19, 2007

I am attempting to move some SQL 2000 databases to SQL 2005. My main production database does not seem to want to move. When I use the SQL 2005 GUI the .bak backup file is marked 'Incomplete'. When I attempt to restore the backup file I get a 'RESTORE detected an error on page (0:0) in database' message. I saw a thread in the SQL Express forum suggesting trying to restore from the T-SQL level to get the GUI out of the picture and I get the same 'error on page (0:0)' message. However when I take the same file and use SQL 2000 Enterprise Manager it restores with no problems.

Any ideas?

Slow Transaction Log-Shipping Restores (SS 2005)

Sep 21, 2007

Hello,

We have log-shipping set up between a source and 3 destination SS 2000 databases. Two of the destination servers actually perform their log restores across the network from the other secondary server. This allows us to only copy the files once from a remote location. All three servers stay caught up within 15 minutes of each other.

Recently, I added a fourth server to this that has SS 2005 SP2 (X64). I wrote a stored procedure that restores log backups from the same single location as the maintenance plan jobs. The problem that I'm experiencing is that this fourth server is not keeping up with the other three. It seems to take longer to restore the same log backups. The destination servers are all on the same domain. This fourth server was previously part of the same maintenance plan configuration as the others prior to rebuilding it for SS 2005 SP2 (X64). During that time, it stayed caught up with the other servers. There is another database on the new server that I am log-shipping to in the same manner and it stays caught up, though, for the most part, the log backups are smaller. There is a file on the fourth server with a ckp extension for the database in question that doesn't seem to exist for the other databases on this server and the other servers.

Any information on this behavior would be appreciated.

There were 20G, 16G and 200MB

i ran it through EM but waited for like 20 minutes for the 20G and 16G but nothing happen. Went to Profiler -- there was no activity log for backup/restore events.

went to QA and tried to restore the backup -- with the stats option but still nothing happenned. The 200MB restore worked though. i have restored a databases over 20G but haven't really encountered this problem. Can anyone assist me ? or have come across this problem ?

TLog Full

Dec 15, 2000

Hi,

My Transaction log has 0% Log Space available. I have performed a dump transaction with no_log but to no effect. I have also extended the log size from
100MB to 200MB and this has not made any inmpression either after several dump database statements also.
The Data Device was 500MB and I extended it to 800MB and again performed a backup. Has anyone any idea how to recover from this situation ?
I can make queries on the data fine but the several backups(and Truncate log) I have made are still not creating any space for my Transaction log.

Please help !

Thanks in advance,
Alan

Slow Backups And Restores

Aug 30, 2006

Hi all,

A few weeks back I had a problem with setting up Maintenance Plans on my SQL Server, the only fix in the end was re-install the SQL along with SP1. Since then backing up or restoring our developers database takes around 15-20 minutes whereas before it would take 1-2 minutes.

The server doesn't seem to be the problem as I have restored it to a 2nd server and get exactly the same problem there. Other databases on the same server of around the same size backup as expected.

The database is approximately 150MB's with the log file being 800MB's.

The server in question is a Dual Core Opteron 2.2Ghz with 4GB's of RAM, running Windows 2003 x64, fully patched and up to date. The SQL version is 2005 Standard Edition x64 also including SP1.

Plenty of disk space and no CPU activity even at the time of backups taking place.

Any help is much appreciated.

Can I TLog Backup From LDF File?

Mar 21, 2007

I am considering some disaster recovery scenarios.

Lets assume my MDF is gone - the disks are dead.

The LDF is on a different disk channel. Lets assume its fine.

Can I make a "final" TLog backup from the "good" LDF file?

Maybe copy some-earlier-MDF file into place, would that enable a TLog backup from the LDF file?

'Coz if I can then I could use that as a route to getting a zero-loss recovery - make a final TLog backup, and then restore the whole lot from last FULL + All TLog backups thereafter.

Using Filegroups To Mimic Table Restores

Sep 28, 2000

Recently, we had some tables inadvertantly dropped from a 20+ GB data warehouse in the middle of one of our load cycles. In order to avoid restarting the load, we had to make restore a copy of the database from a full database backup and then manually move in the dropped tables using DTS.

This ended up being a painful process, and I am looking to avoid it by restructuring the database into filegroups so I can mimic the table restore function from 6.5.

I am looking for pros, cons, gotchas, and best practices regarding splitting a MSSQL 7 database into multiple filegroups. We would be including 1 or more tables and all of thier indexes in each filegroup. Specifically, I have the following questions:

1. All the literature I read mentions the need for doing transaction log backups and restores if I utilize filegroup backups. Is this really necessary? We have turned off transaction logging for performance reasons, and since we completely control the addition of new data into the db.

2. Are there implications for disk read performance involved with filegroups? Our data resides on an EMC disk array. I feel that we'll most likely have between 20 and 30 filegroups.

3. If we decide to move a table (and its indexes) between filegroups, is the process as simple a dropping the clustered index and recreating it on the new filegroup (then dropping and recreating the n-c indexes)?

Any information y'all can post would be greatly appreciated.

TLog Backup Then Start Log Shipping

Apr 9, 2008

Hello,

I have an SQL 2005 maintenance plan that backups up the t-logs of my production db every 15 minutes. I want to begin log shipping over to a warm-standby secondary server. The network share, log shipping folder is not the same folder location as my maintenance plan folder. My question is, do I need to disable the maintenance plan for tlog backups in order for log shipping to be sucessful? Or will the dual backups to seperate backup folder locations cause a failure in the secondary server restore process?

I suspect the latter but wanted a second opinion.

Thanks.

Restore To New Db Restores Less Data Than What Is In The Source Backup File

Jan 25, 2006

I am trying to create sql code that restores a backup of a master database to a new database on the same server. It “seems” to run correctly as no errors are produced. However, the most recent updates to the master database are not present in the new databases. All databases are using the Full recovery model. What is really strange is that if I do (what I think is) the same function in Enterprise Administrator, the restore works fine! For both methods I used the same backup file!

Any and all help is sincerely appreciated.

The master databases from which the backups are made start with “MODTRNMaster”

The databases which are created from the restores start with “M1_” and “M2_”. (We call them training room databases.)

My script for backing up the master databases:

-- Backup the master training database

backup database MODTRNMaster
to disk = 'f:kupMODTRNMaster.bak'

backup database MODTRNMaster_IMG
to disk = 'f:kupMODTRNMaster_IMG.bak'

backup database MODTRNMaster_MNC
to disk = 'f:kupMODTRNMaster_MNC.bak'

backup database MODTRNMaster_VM
to disk = 'f:kupMODTRNMaster_VM.bak'

go

This is the restore script for restoring the first training room databases. I’m hoping that there is just something simple that I’m overlooking in these restore statements! J

-- Restore the backup of the master training database into the

-- training room #1 database.

use master
go

drop database M1_MSLH
go

restore database M1_MSLH
from disk = 'f:kupMODTRNMaster.bak'
with move 'DEV5_Data' to 'f:mssqldataM1_MLSH.mdf',
move 'MM' to 'f:mssqldataM1_MLSH_1.mdf',
move 'AMB' to 'f:mssqldataM1_MLSH_2.mdf',
move 'DM' to 'f:mssqldataM1_MLSH_3.mdf',
move 'IMM' to 'f:mssqldataM1_MLSH_4.mdf',
move 'ED' to 'f:mssqldataM1_MLSH_5.mdf',
move 'DEV5_Log' to 'f:mssqllogM1_MLSH_log.ldf',
recovery

go

Thanks in advance

SQL 2012 :: TempDB - Tlog Sizing / Capacity Planning?

Nov 18, 2014

I am in the process of formulating recommendations with respect to the purchase of additional storage for our current SQL 2012 SharePoint (2013) instance. My recommendation is to purchase separate storage (i.e, 15k disks) for the TempDB and Tlogs respectively (two sets of raid 10 disks). Currently, this server is hosting several instances, including SP, using two arrays (one for database and the other for Tlogs).

I am attempting to find information/recommendations on how to go about projecting the amount of storage for each of these while factoring in for growth.

Additional Details:

how to best formulate a reasonable estimate. Our largest content database belongs to IT and is currently ~80GB. That said, this is currently an outlier. The remaining content databases are less than 10GB (most are less than 2-3 GB). However, SharePoint will be used for digital document imaging in addition to, eventually, replacing file shares as our primary document storage medium once we roll it out.

Our current tempDB is ~400MB, but the instance was recently started a few days ago, as we had to failover to our backup server for hardware maintenance. I do not have any historical data on TempDB growth at this time. Also, I don't know how useful this would be given we have not fully deployed yet.

Cannot Shrink Tlog File And DB Not Replicating But DBCC OPENTRAN Shows HA Process

Nov 21, 2014

I've already shrunk the tlog from 350 GB to 313.My DB Server (2008 R2 Sp2) cannot be restarted and the db cannot go offline or detach due to company policy. My DB after changing from full to simple mode still has 313GB tlog file and when I run DBCC OPENTRAN I get Transaction information for database 'DB'.

Replicated Transaction Information:

Oldest distributed LSN : (0:0:0)
Oldest non-distributed LSN : (2882:26:1)
DBCC execution completed. If DBCC printed error messages, contact your system administrator.

Which means this DB is participating in a High Availability process like replication, mirroring or log shipping.

So I run EXEC sp_repldone @xactid = NULL, @xact_segno = NULL, @numtrans = 0, @time = 0, @reset = 1.

This is useful when there are replicated transactions in the transaction log that are no longer valid and you want to truncate the log.

But I get an error:

Msg 18757, Level 16, State 1, Procedure sp_repldone, Line 1

Unable to execute procedure. The database is not published. Execute the procedure in a database that is published for replication.

There are currently 9 connections and all are sleeping. What else can i try in order to shrink the tlog file?

Would A TLOG File Size Change When Inserts/updates/deletes Are Not Involved?

Jan 3, 2008

I have a 14GB database whose data content is legacy and is described as static. The log file is significantly large and continues to change size mostly increasing by 2-5GB a day (~60GB now) I have observed over the past two days; it shrank once unexpectly by a few GB. The instance is hosting other databases such as: EnterpriseVaultDirectory, EnterpriseVaultMonitoring, EnterpriseVaultStore, and NetPerfMon - might these seemingly unrelated data sources be involved?

I am trying to a trace to find traffic against the tables, no such luck.

Web applications are playing against it for queries but there should be no UPDATEs beign applied. I can only suspect that other unknown applications are performing operations but have yet to find unexplained connections.

Are there any other reasons why this type of log file activity would happen merely due to queries or stored procedure calls?

Lets also state, "mirroring, indexing, replication" are not at play. I know logging "Full" is not necessary as "Simple" should suffice but I am still hunting down why UPDATEs might be getting through. I realize I might adjust the migrated SQL 2000 security model to deny updates to find what breaks but would rather not take that iniative yet.

The installation is a fresh SQL 2005 Standard setup with SP2 applied; the databases were upgraded.

SQL Server Admin 2014 :: Point In Time Restores Referencing Copy-only Backups?

Nov 25, 2014

On one of our SQL Server 2014 boxes each database has a copy-only full backup made every night, in addition to the maintenance plan schedule of a full backup weekly, daily differential backups and log backups.

When performing a PIT restore in SSMS the restore file list lists the most recent copy-only backup as the full backup to use, not the most recent plan full backup. I noticed that using SSMS 2008 to start a PIT restore on the 2014 box does not have this problem, and lists the correct restore file sequence (ignores the copy-only backups).

SQL Server 2008 :: Test Backup Restores (full And Log) - Restore Databases Automatically?

Apr 4, 2015

I am working towards automating the process of testing our backups. For the meantime, I do it all manually - I copy the backup files (full + transaction logs) to our test server and then run the restore script. Once database restored I run the DBCC CheckDB. The results of checkdb I manually upload to our Sharepoint portal as proof that the backup file is intact with no errors.

here are some ideas I have but have not yet tested:

Create a maintenance plan with each 3 jobs:

--> Powershell script to copy the files from Prod server to Test server - add this scrip to Job1
--> Powershell script to restore databases files - add this script to Job2
--> Run the DBCC in powershell (yet to find if possible in PS) - add this script to Job3

I would like to use seperate jobs as to get a report on the duration and status of each job

Would also like to get the results of the DBCC Checkdb as proof that no errors were found for upload to our Sharepoint portal. Dont know if possible via the job.

Bit-data From SQL Server 2000 (2005 Working, 2000 Doesn't)

May 19, 2008

Hi, I am trying to edit some data from a SQL2000-datasource in ASP.NET 2.0 and have a problem with a column that has bit-data and is used for selection. SQL2005 works fine when declaring             <SelectParameters>                <asp:Parameter DefaultValue="TRUE" Name="APL" Type="boolean" />            </SelectParameters>When running this code with SQL2000, there are no error-msgs, but after editing a record the "APL"-column looses its value of 1 and is set to 0. Looks like an issue with type-conversion, we've hit incompatibilities between SQL200 and 2005 with bit/boolean several times before. So, how is this done correctly with SQL2000?  (I've tried setting the Type to "int16" -> err. Also setting Defval="1" gave an err) ThanksMichael

SQL 2000 To SQL 2005 Works For One 2000 Server But Not The Next

Jun 15, 2006

I have several SQL 2000 servers I need to setup transactional (non updatable) replication with. The structure is:

SQL Server 2000 as Publisher/Distributor

SQL Server 2005 Standard as Subscriber

The connection is via the Internet with snapshots using FTP.

I setup the first set (2 databases at location A). They work wonderfully. I created the publication and then subscribed using MGMT Studio for 2K5.

II am setting up the same scenario for location B. Here is my problem:

In MGMT Studio I connect to the publisher (SANDRA). I right-click a publication and choose New Subscriptions..., the publication is already selected. I click next - Run each agent at its Subscriber is selected and the only option (this is desired), I click Next

HERE IS THE PROBLEM:

On the Subscriber's screen there are no Subscribers listed. When setting up location A the subscribing server was listed and I could choose a database. The Next button is greyed out and there is no way to create/add one.

I tried setting up the subscription by right-clicking the subcribing server's Replication folder in MGMT Studio but I get the same result (except that I have to authenticate with the publishing server which works fine).

WHAT'S DIFFERENT:

Location A is SQL Server Standard (SP3) running on SBS2K3. It is obviously on a domain and so SQL Server and the SQL Agent are running under domain accounts. Location B is a Windows XP SP2 machine running SQL Server Personal Edition (it actually says Development Edition in the properties window).

The databases are the same strucutre, different data. At location A the firewall is set to allow 1433->*any* and *any*->1433 where *any* is 1024 or higher. On the XP machine the firewall is set to allow port 1433. I don't think this is the issue because I've turned the firewall off on the XP machine and I get the same result.

ANY IDEAS?
