SQL 2000/Terminal Services Compatability

Oct 11, 2001

I need to know if Microsoft supports SQL Server 2000 running on the same server that functions as a Terminal Server (both NT and Windows 2000).

I checked out Microsoft.com and found that SQL Server 7 is supported with NT Terminal Services but can't locate any compatability information SQL 2000.

PS: I know this configuration doesn't make sense from a performance perspective but my customers will want to do this anyway.

Thanks!

Hanging Or Lockup Issue With SQL Server And Terminal Services 2000 On NT 4 Domain Server

Jul 20, 2005

Hi all,Have a situation that my company has never run across before. Clientis running NT4 for the domain server, using terminal services 2000 andrunning an application with a SQL Server backend and they areexperiencing locking problems. Once one person gets locked out theneveryone trying to access that tables is also locked out as a result. It is not specific to a certain User, or module within theapplication. It's not a specific time of the day (like when a backupwould be running) and sometimes it's in the middle of the night whenthere are actually less Users on the system. We have 500 customers using this application. Most are using SQLServer backend, alot of the newer customers are using TerminalServices, and the number of Users is not accessive as compared to ourother customers. THe only difference is that I do not specificallyknow of another client with an NT4 Domain server in the mix.We actually switched to SQL Server as the recommended back end due tolocking issues using SQLBase because SQL Server is row locking andSQLBase is page locking. Since making this change we have stoppedseeing the locking for years until now. Is this a SQLServer issue orissue with the NT Domain server?Anyone have any ideas???ThanksA

ReportViewer Not Printing Under Terminal Services

Aug 16, 2007

I have written an application with VB.Net. It display a report written using Reporting Rervices (rdl) in the ReportViewer Contol. When I run the application locally under windows, I can print the report just fine. When I run it under Terminal Services, sometimes it takes 2 or 3 times to print. Sometimes it never does. It looks like it prints the pages because the popup displays and it shows it is printing but it never does.

If I bring up the queue for the printer to watch when I print, then click the Print button on the the ReportView contol, I see the print enter the queue on the printer and then it is deleted but nothing prints. If I do it all again, the same thing happens but it may or may not print.

The applicatoin is written in VB.Net under Visual Studio Professional SP1.

Any and all assistance is greatly appreciated!!

SQL Server And Terminal Services Application Mode

Aug 11, 2006

Hello!

I am specifically looking for a KB article, best practice, white paper etc, that states it is not recommended that SQL Server (either 2000 or 2005) is installed on a WIndows 2003 Server that is also running Terminal Services in application mode.

Is there such a document or reference?

Thanks,

Restoring 2005 Backup With 8.0 Compatability Mode On 2000 - Help

Feb 26, 2007

Hi,

I have a database that is in the SQL Server 2000 compatability mode on my SQL 2005 server. I am trying to restore a backup of this database on my SQL Server 2000 database on another server and keep getting strange messages. First trying Red-Gate and then plain SQL Server with no luck.

It seems as I remember that the 7.0 and 2000 compatibility issue between backups did not arise when the compatibility mode was set to 7.0.

Is this "planned" behavior or an "undocumented feature"??? Anyone else have success doing this?

Thanks,

John Campbell

SQL 7.0 SP 3 And Terminal Server

Feb 27, 2001

Has anyone else found problems with their Terminal server after installing SP 3 for SQL 7.0?
Our users permissions changed for their printers and ODBC was giving all kinds of cryptic
error messages. When the users rights were changed from Domain User to Domain Admin
everything works fine. We have been able to reproduce this on numerous servers.and always
after we applied the SP did the problems start.

Top N And Compatability Level

Aug 16, 2000

How do I check the compatability level of a database?
The db in question was originally created in SQL 6.5 and converted to 7.0. Would this have reset the compatability level to 7 or left it at 6.5?
If it is at 6.5 what are the implications of changing it to 7?

Ray, if you answer this can you please forward me your email address. Thanks.

Changing Compatability From 65 To 80

Apr 21, 2008

Finally, I may have a good enough excuse to justify changing the compatabilty level of one of the biggies I look after!

Before I go ahead with the change I just wanted to run a couple of questions passed the community.
I know this is very vague, but what sort of problems should I expect? I know there are a few syntax changes, but I don't imagine I will have a problem going up in compatability level!
What is the best method to perform this?
A very simple

EXEC sp_dbcmptlevel 'playdb', 80

Or

ALTER DATABASE SET SINGLE_USER
EXEC sp_dbcmptlevel 'playdb', 80
ALTER DATABASE SET MULTI_USER

How long does this process take; are we talking seconds, minutes, hours? I imagine it's seconds, but I pose this question because a colleague reckons it will take longer because of the database size. I argue that because it's a db configuration setting, it will make no difference...

Thanks a bunch,
George

SQL 2005 Compatability Mode

Feb 23, 2007

Hi,We currently have a fairly old product, which was originally onlycompatible with SQL 2000.When we upgraded our server to SQL 2005, the client product gave us a"This product is not compatible with this version of SQL server"error. We put the server into SQL 2000 compatability mode, and things worked. Then I tested a Windows Vista workstation client. The error returned.I realise that if we are simply dealing with a client incompatabilitywith Vista, then I'm in the wrong forum, but what I'm hoping is thatsomeone knows anything server side, perhaps where SQL 2000compatability mode becomes ignored for some reason, when the client isrunning Vista. The vendor pretty much no longer exists, and nothing I've been able todo with Vista's compatability modes has been helpful so far.

Font Dependencies Over Terminal Sessions?

Feb 15, 2008

I just have a simple question on font dependencies in reference to deployed reports. In my company, we run citrix presentation servers feeding terminal sessions out to users in remote areas.

My question is, in a terminal session, do the fonts used in the reports need to be installed on the users' local machine (who is connecting via terminal session) or is it enough to just have it on the servers feeding out the terminal session?

For example, we create a report with Arial Narrow font. Our servers hosting citrix presentation server did not have this font installed, so we installed this font on the servers (thus they're displaying correctly). Obviously the server hosting our reporting services has the font. Now a user connects to the server, is granted a terminal session, launches reporting services, report is generated with the correct font displayed, and finally prints the report.

Will the report print in Arial Narrow if the users' local machine doesn't have this font install? I remember reading somewhere that the fonts do not embed, hence the reason for installing the font on our citrix servers.

I realize this is kinda out of the scope of this forum, but perhaps someone on here uses terminal services and can answer this for me. I do plan to test this out when I get home tonight. I'd test it right now, but my computer at home isn't on therefore I can't remote home (plus wake-on-lan isn't configured) to do an actual test. Just thought I'd get some insights from other people.

Thanks in advance!

SQL Server 2005 Backwards Compatability

Jan 18, 2006

I'm sure this question has already been asked, I made an attempt to search the forums, but was unsuccessful.
Our production servers are currently running SQL Server 2000 3a.  I just got a new development system and have no intentions of installing SQL Server 2000 dev, but SQL Server 2005 Dev Edition.
I was wondering if I will still be able to install SQL2005 and still be able to administer/modify 2000 mdfs with SQL 2005 Enterprise Manager.  I wanted to be able to still make development on SQL 2k5 and update the production server (SQL2k).  This is on my dev system not the production, the production will still be running SQL 2k, until the client decides on purchasing SQL 2k5.
Of course I will not be able to use the new db features and types on a SQL2000 server, I just want to maintain the legacy with 05 Enterprise Manager (i.e.: SP, UDF and DTO).
Thanks a gig.
Larry

Migrate From 32bit 2000 Reporting Services To 2005 64bit Reporting Services

Mar 22, 2008

Hello,

I am trying to migrate my reports from SQL server 2000 reporting services 32bit to 2005 64bit. I am following the migration steps that MS specified.
Restored my Reportserver and ReportserverTempDB databases
Then I was using the configure Report services to upgrade these databases but I always end up getting the follwoing exception when I run the upgrade on the "Database Setup" configuration for 'ReportServerTempDB' database
System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Could not locate entry in sysdatabases for database 'ReportServerTempDBTempDB'. No entry found with that name. Make sure that the name is entered correctly.
at System.Data.SqlClient.SqlConnection.OnError(SqlException exception, Boolean breakConnection)
at System.Data.SqlClient.SqlInternalConnection.OnError(SqlException exception, Boolean breakConnection)
at System.Data.SqlClient.TdsParser.ThrowExceptionAndWarning(TdsParserStateObject stateObj)
at System.Data.SqlClient.TdsParser.Run(RunBehavior runBehavior, SqlCommand cmdHandler, SqlDataReader dataStream, BulkCopySimpleResultSet bulkCopyHandler, TdsParserStateObject stateObj)
at System.Data.SqlClient.SqlCommand.RunExecuteNonQueryTds(String methodName, Boolean async)
at System.Data.SqlClient.SqlCommand.InternalExecuteNonQuery(DbAsyncResult result, String methodName, Boolean sendToPipe)
at System.Data.SqlClient.SqlCommand.ExecuteNonQuery()
at Microsoft.ReportingServices.Common.DBUtils.ApplyScript(String connectionString, String script)
at ReportServicesConfigUI.SqlClientTools.SqlTools.ApplyScript(String connectionString, String script)

It's driving me crazy, why is it looking for 'ReportServerTempDBTempDB' in the catalog instead of 'ReportServerTempDB'?
Is it possible to migrate from 32bit to 64bit?

Any help is appreciated

Compatibility Of SQL Express Reporting Services With SQL 2000 Reporting Services

Dec 6, 2006

I'm attempting to obtain a cost effective solution for my existing customers to develop reports on their SQL 2000 Server installations using their Reporting Services 2000. With products like Visual Basic.NET 2003 becoming almost impossible to obtain, I have at least one customer who is running into a dead end.

One option possibly is the SQL Express with Advanced Services download, which has Reporting Services. My questions are as follows:

Can the report designer component of SQL Express Reporting Services be configured to connect to an external database (which would happen to be a SQL 2000 database) to establish its datasets?
Does the resultant designed report end up in an RDL file? If the customer published this report via the Reporting Services 2000 Report Manager, would the report be able to run?

Sorry for asking a question like this that I could probably answer on my own, but my customer needed this answer yesterday. I have scoured the web and microsoft sites - and posted a question on the official SQL Reporting Services cateogy ... in an attempt to answer the basic question of how to design reports for Reporting Services 2000 in the absence of Visual Basic.NET 2003 (or other .NET 2003 tools) with no success.

Thanks to anyone who can help.

-- Mark
