VERY Slow Generate Scripts On SQL 2005 Compared To SQL 2000
Aug 1, 2007i was using sql 2000, the database contains 500+ tables, 3000+ sp.
i moved to sql 2005 and found problem on generating script (right click database -> tasks -> generate scripts).
i need to generate the table relations.... it is very very slow compared to sql 2000 which is done in about 30 seconds to few minutes.
i already tried many ways including set options to false which in my thought could speed up a lot...but still very slow.
average generate script time with sql 2005 (sp 2): 70-90 minutes.
average generate script time with sql 2000 (sp 4): 2-3 minutes.
can anyone tell why ? thx in advance.

Add an ADO.Net Connection Manager.
Edit the Connection Manager editor and select the ODBC Data Provider
Configure the Connection Manager to use your DSN or connection string
Add a Data Flow Task to your package.
Add a Data Reader Source adapter to your data flow
Edit the Data Reader source adapter to use the ADO.Net connection manager that you added.
Edit the Data Reader source to query for the data you wish to extract.

Using the steps outlined above as described by Donald Farmer in another post on this forum, I have created an SSIS package which retrieves data from Lotus Notes 6.55. The DSN referenced by the ADO.Net Connection Manager connects to Lotus Notes via the NotesSQL ODBC driver 3.02g.
When I execute the dataflow, data is transferred from Lotus Notes, but the data transfer rate is extremely slow compared to SQL 2000 DTS. In SQL 2000 DTS, we can retrieve just under half a million records from Lotus Notes in about 13 minutes. Utilizing the same DSN on the same machine, SQL 2005 SSIS completes the transfer in about 57 minutes.
Is there anything that can be done to improve the performance in SSIS to retrieve data from Lotus Notes via ADO.Net ODBC?

Adding Logins Via SSEUtil Compared To SQL Server Management Studio

I am currently in the process of setting up an SQL Server Express installation that comes packaged with an application I have written. My problem is that I want to use SQL Server user management (not just windows users) which work fine if I set them up manually. Now if I run this script from within SQL Server Management Studio it executes perfectly. The logins add, the role is added, each user is added to the database logins and assigned to the role, the schema is set correctly on each user.
Then when I try to run the exact same script from the SSEUtil application (SSEUTIL -s PCNAMEInstance -run USERS.SQL), it processes everything, except the Logins.
This is frustrating as it means to install for a client I would need to either get them to open the management console and run the script from there, or I have to go to site just to setup users.
Am I on the right track? Or is there another way to automate the adding of Logins?

Memory Configurations For SQL Server 2005 EE X64 With SQL Server 2000 EE X32 On Windows Server EE X64 Server
Apr 20, 2007My server is a dual AMD x64 2.19 GHz with 8 GB RAM running under Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition with service pack 1 installed. We have SQL 2000 32-bit Enterprise installed in the default instance. AWE is enabled using Dynamically configured SQL Server memory with 6215 MB minimum memory and 6656 maximum memory settings.
I have now installed, side-by-side, SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edition in a separate named instance. Everything is running fine but I believe SQL Server2005 could run faster and need to ensure I am giving it plenty of resources. I realize AWE is not needed with SQL Server 2005 and I have seen suggestions to grant the SQL Server account the 'lock pages in memory' rights. This box only runs the SQL 2000 and SQL 2005 server databases and I would like to ensure, if possible, that each is splitting the available memory equally, at least until we can retire SQL Server 2000 next year. Any suggestions?

Because some time i am giving the date in dd/mm/yyyy and sometime mm/dd/yyyy.
while give the date in mm/dd/yyyy works fine but not in the another case. and also while i execute a query on query analyser it shows the datetime in
yyyy/mm/dd format.
So anyone can please tell me how the dates will be stored in the datetime column of sqlserver database?

Can't Connect .Net Application From Windows Server 2003 To Database Server (SQL Server 2000)

I am having a problem connecting my .net applications from the application server to the database server. When I run the application from my windows xp (sp2) box it works fine. When I try to connect via SQL Management Studio to the database server from the application server I get the same error.
Here is the error:
System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server)
Here is the Environment:
App Server:
Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition
Inside Company's Firewall/ Network
Database Server:
Windows Server 2000 Advanced Edition
SQL Server 2000 SP4
Remote Connections to the Server is checked
Enable Protocols: Named Pipes & TCP/IP
TCP/IP Port: 1402 (I don't know why it isn't the default of 1433)
The db server is sitting out side the Company's firewall (don't ask me why). I can access it fine from inside the firewall on my XP box but not from windows server 2003. There is a web server outside the our network that also connects to the db server with no problem and that is running Windows Server 2003 Web Edition.
I can ping the db server from the app server using the IP address.
I tried using the IP address and the port 1402 in my connection string but that didn't work from any machine (XP and Server).
I imagine the issue is somehow related to the company's firewall but why would it only block Windows Server 2003 and not XP?
What do I tell the network admin to change?
Any help would be appreciated.

- Start SQL Server Agent Job (Success)
- Execute SQL Server Agent Job (Error)

When I take a look at 'Event viewer' on the SQL 2005 server, the following error is displayed;

SQL Server 2005 Installation Problems With SQL Server Express && SQL Server 2000

I have had SQL Server Express and Sql Server Management Studio Express installed on my machine for some time and recently tried to install a trial of SQL Server 2005 as well. (Yes, I'm migrating from Visual Studio Express to Visual Studio Professional, just as in tended!)
Everything went fine except that nothing seemed to be installed. I searched in all the obvious places - both on the Start/Programs menu and on the hard-drive: nothing.
A check under Add/Remove Programs showed that Sql Server 2005 Express was installed, but called SQL Server 2005.
So after a number of retries in which the install program kept saying that there was nothing to install, I selected every option under Advanced in the intall process. This resulted in stuff being installed and I now have SQL Server 2005 running on my machine, but no SQL Server Manager icon.
My questions are:
Where can I find the SQL Server Manager executeable?
Has anyone installed SQL Server Express, SQL Server Mangement Studio Express, SQL Server 2005 and SQL Server Management Studio on a single machine successfully? If so, what order did you install them in? (I'm planning on uninstalling everything SXQL Server related and starting again.)

I have created a linked server from SQL Server 2005 (SP 1) to SQL Service 2000 (SP 4) with a sql server login that is available on both servers but with different passwords and permissions.
I am getting the following error while accessing the linked server in management studio based on the scenario given below ;

1. I have tried impersonating login from SQL Server 2005 to SQL Server 2000 .
2. I have also tried specifying remote login / password option.
Anyone having any idea, would be of great help.

SQL Server 2000 Vs. SQL Server 2000 Development Version
Jan 17, 2005I am a freelance programmer and just picked up a client that has an instance of SQL Server. I just need to know if the Developer edition (I've seen it as low as $49) will function adequately for me to test the application I'm writing.
The test environment will be 2 PC's, 'A' running the server and 'B' the one I'm writing the software on. I need to configure comp 'A' to mirror the client's WAN and how various client's comps will access the database with the application I'm writing on comp 'B'. I don't need a full-blown liscense for the database, as I won't be keeping it after production is finished. I just need one I can connect to and configure for development testing without having to develope the software on-site.

Sql Server 2000 Installing Database On New Sql Server 2000

Problem description
There are two sql servers with the same database in different locations with replication running on them. Users in the two locations insert or update date on there own database through an ms access application . The data are replicated to both servers.
Someone wanted a copy of the database and they dropped replication, but users continue to modify and add data on both servers and so replication could not be back again without merging the two databases as one again and restarting replication.
My job was to merge the databases and make replication work and after allot of work all is fine.
I copy and attached the database on my pc that I set up as a server and did the job. Then I went back on both servers that had replication running before I attached the database and set the subscriber and publisher and all was fine to that point.
The database has six groups with permissions on them and many database users on each location. Both the groups and the users show on the database.
I create a new login and user and I add him to the groups to get the permissions.
Now back on a user pc I login with the new user name run the ms access application and try to add some new records, but I get errors that I cannot insert null values to two of the fields in several tables in the database.
This was not happening before and the database was recording the values in those fields namely the user name and the date that the new record was created.
After some reading I found out that I might need to set the groups and permissions on the views and tables from the beging but Im not an expert.
Any ideas?

Disaster Recovery: SQL Server 2000 On Win 2000 Server.
Sep 13, 2007This past Monday, our Raid 5 array failed on our SQL 2000 server (standard edition). Long story short, we were able to get the data back, mostly. In SQL server Ent. Mgr., I had to restore 4 databases that were 'Suspect' and "greyed out". No problems there... I was able to restore them.
What was interesting was that the SQL Server Agent would not start. As it turned out, a few files were either corrupt or missing after we got the machine back up. We had to restore a few files from tape backup and now the SQL Server Agent starts... but now I have a new problem.
For some reason, my default SQL Server Agent "Job" that is scheduled to run once per day fails. It appears that all of the databases get backed up, but for some reason, the msdbdata.mdf database is NOT being backed up.
I have a few questions. Could my msdbdata.mdf be corrupt? I have a successful backup of the msdbdata.mdf table from 9/10/2007. Can I just restore from that? Will there be any repercussions to any of the other database tables if I do?
Furthermore, should I just restore the msdbdata.mdf, master.mdf and the model.mdf? I really have no idea what these tables do and the repercussions of modifying them. I am not a DBA (obviously) and I just don't want to make an mistakes.

"SQL Server CE Tool is compatible only with SQL Server 2000 Service pack 1 and higher.When you install SQL Server CE Server Tools on a computer running both IIS and SQL Server 2000 , ensure the installer for SQL Server CE Server Tools corresponds To the version of SQL Server 2000."
I am sure that i have running SQL Server 2000 SP 4 (MSDE also SP 4) , IIS (Version 5.1) is also working fine , and one more thing i am trying to install SQL Server CE Server Tool setup is "sqlce20sql2ksp4.exe" (Which i downloaded from microsoft site.).Here all the requirement is fulfill but i dont know what is going to wrong.
I wasted my 2 days behind solving this issue , now i am tiered ,So please any one have solution for this issue.
Help me please.

Unable To Install SQL Server CE Server Tool On SQL Server 2000 SP 4

I have installed "SQL Server 2000 SP 4" to SQL server and it is running fine.
But when i install the "SQL Server CE version 2.0 Update for use with IIS and SQL Server 2000 SP4", i get below error:
"SQL Server CE Tool is compatible only with SQL Server 2000 Service pack 1 and higher.
When you install SQL Server CE Server Tools on a computer running both IIS and SQL Server 2000 , ensure the installer for SQL Server CE Server Tools corresponds To the version of SQL Server 2000."
I have go thougth few articles in the forum, try to open the sqlce20sql2ksp4.exe file and then run only the MSI, but still fail.
By the way, i found that the sqlce20sql2ksp4.exe does not include any MSI, it is a direct executable file.
Appreciate if anyone tell me the solution.

I am facing problem with installing SQL Server CE Server Tool,
I have installed SQL Server 2000 SP 4 which is working fine.
While i am running Setup of "SQL Server 2000 Windows CE Edition version 2.0" ,Developer tools installed successfully but incase of SQL Server CE Server Tool i am getting following Error
"SQL Server CE Tool is compatible only with SQL Server 2000 Service pack 1 and higher.When you install SQL Server CE Server Tools on a computer running both IIS and SQL Server 2000 , ensure the installer for SQL Server CE Server Tools corresponds To the version of SQL Server 2000."

SSIS Compared To DTS?
Dec 7, 2007There is no doubt that SSIS has been designed to build on the lessons learned from DTS but in one respect I think that there may have been a backward step and that is ease of use. A big attraction (a hallmark even) of DTS was that you could configure a package to move data between data sources and destinations in minutes.
When you first start using SSIS this is far from being true. I tended to get a lot of errors (many of them not very helpful) relating to stored procedure parameters, truncation of data etc. Looking around this Forum I think that I am not alone. This is partly a learning curve issue but I think that the learning curve is much steeper for SSIS.

This is not a plea to go back to DTS, we must move on, but I would like to think that there will be an emphasis on improving ease of use for SSIS going forward.
For the record two general improvements that I can see in SSIS (over DTS) are:-
1. A more logical structure.
2. The ability to easily set any Package Property, not just Variables at run time.
